New app use mandatory for driving licenses

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) is cracking down on security, rolling out mandatory identity checks with the ThaID app from Nov. 1 for anyone booking driving license and vehicle registration slots.

Seksom Akkharaphan, the deputy director-general and official spokeperson of the DLT, announced the new pre-booking system. Cabinet approves aid package for flood victims in 50 provinces

The cabinet approved a package to help flood victims yesterday, both individuals and businesses in 50 provinces, which includes tax exemptions, soft loans, debt moratoria, interest rate cuts and loan guarantees.

Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap said that the rehabilitation package is on top of the 9,000 baht one-time financial help provided by the government to about 67,000 households impacted by flooding this year. Continued …

Heavy rain sparks landslide warnings in southern Thailand

The Flood, Storm, and Landslide Disaster Relief Operations Center has issued warnings to residents in nine southern provinces, as heavy rains move southward, increasing the risk of landslides. Jirayu Huangsap, the spokesperson for the center, reported that provinces at risk are Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Satun, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala.

Video: Elephant overturns vehicle with the driver inside

An elephant overturned a pickup truck on the side of the road with the driver inside, as it is believed that the latter did not wait for the animal to cross the road. The incident happened about 128 kilometers east of the capital Bangkok in rural Chachoengsao province Saturday evening.

At least 2 dead as flood victims await evacuation in Chiang Mai

Evacuations are underway to help people stranded at numerous locations in Muang and Saraphi districts of Chiang Mai province, which were heavily hit by the overflowing Ping River from late Saturday night.

The level of the Ping River at the Nawarat Bridge in Muang district reached a historic high of 5.30 meters on Saturday night. The level declined to 5.15 meters at 4am and 5 meters at 8am on Sunday. Continued …

Cleanup begins in Chiang Mai as flood recedes

Chiang Mai Municipality started a major cleanup on Monday as the huge flood that paralyzed the northern city began draining off.

Two elephants drown at Chiang Mai’s Elephant Nature Park

A religious ceremony was held to bid farewell to “Fah Sai” and “Ploy Thong”, two female elephants from the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai province, who were washed away by a flash flood on Friday.

More than 100 elephants were safely evacuated over Friday and Saturday from the flooded Elephant and Environment Foundation, in Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai province, according to the Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang province.

The center said that it received a call for help from the foundation on Friday morning and immediately sent a team to assist. It is not lost on some that internet sensation Moo Deng, the baby pygmy hippo, already lives inside a zoo enclosure – the perfect pedestal from which onlookers so possessed by her cuteness can gawk, heckle, and harass her so much that they’ve confessed to wanting to ball her up and swallow her whole. DDC warns against uncooked pork after 12 deaths in Thailand

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) issued a warning yesterday regarding the consumption of uncooked pork, following 12 fatalities linked to Streptococcus suis in four provinces in the lower northeastern region of Thailand.

Dr. Taweechai Wisanuyothin, head of DDC Office 9, reported that from Jan. 7 to Sept. 3 there were 149 cases of hearing loss caused by this bacterium in the surveillance areas of Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, and Chaiyaphum. Continued …

Thailand Tourism in 2024: A year of rebound and reflection

Thailand’s tourism industry is witnessing a robust rebound, with hotel bookings now exceeding pre-Covid levels. According to a recent report from Krungthai Compass, domestic travel has skyrocketed, with over 136 million trips made by Thai travelers in the first half of this year alone, that’s a 21% increase from pre-pandemic figures. The report does acknowledge that international tourist arrivals are on the up but lower than 2019 levels.

Hotel occupancy rates nationwide have jumped to 72.6%, with southern Thailand leading the charge, largely thanks to its luxurious resort offerings. The average daily rate for hotels has also seen an upward trend, with prices forecast to rise even further in the coming years. Thailand faces severe weather conditions today, as the Meteorological Department (TMD) issues warnings of heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flash floods across 51 provinces. The northern and northeastern regions are expected to be particularly affected, with rain predicted to cover 70% of these areas.

Nittorn Intarachuen, 78, a resident of Village 6 in Tha Thong subdistrict in Sukhothai province, is suffering a deep sense of loss after watching her houses being washed away by strong currents in the recent flooding, leaving her just the three sets of clothes that she managed to grab. She saidshe has nothing left, as all her belongings and the two houses were washed away by the swollen Yom River.

Over 300 pigs have died after being submerged for three days due to a sudden flood at a farm in the northern province of Lampang, causing significant damage estimated at 21 million baht.

PEA leads network partners to restore electricity system for flood victims

From the situation of flash floods, forest runoff and landslides from Typhoon Yangi and Typhoon Soulik, more than 100,000 people in the northern and northeastern regions have been affected, causing widespread damage, such as: electrical systems in homes or even Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) distribution systems.

Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has instructed officials at Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT) to take legal action against backhoe operators in flood-hit provinces for increasing mud-removal fees.

Indian move puts more pressure on Thai rice prices

India is preparing to resume exports of non-basmati white rice, as inventories in the world’s biggest exporter of the grain surge and farmers prepare to harvest a new crop. New Delhi set a floor price for non-basmati exports at $490 per ton, a government order said.

THAI to terminate Thai Smile for good, CEO says

Thai Airways International will no longer keep its loss-ridden Thai Smile Airways budget airline, but will terminate it now that it has transferred a fleet of 20 Airbus A320 planes to THAI, the parent airline’s chief executive officer said.

THAI CEO Chai Eamsiri said that after the fleet was transferred to be under operation by THAI, they generated more income than when they were under operation of Thai Smile. Scientists Unveil Countdown To Save Oceans From Plastic Pollution

A report published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin by researchers from Japan’s Kyushu University has, for the first time, established a clear numerical target for addressing global marine plastic pollution. Through their mapping of plastic waste movement and its impacts on the oceans, the team determined that a minimum 32% reduction in plastic littering is required by 2035 to avert further harm to marine environments.

Overflowing Ping River continues to affect downtown Chiang Mai

The flooding triggered by the overflowing of the Ping River in Chiang Mai’s Mueang district is even worse than in 2011, according to a report. The surge in the river flooded residences and commercial zones in the district on Wednesday night, including San Pa Khoi Market and the Charoen Prathet and Night Bazaar neighborhoods.

Korat faces water shortage with all its reservoirs only half full

While several provinces in the north are suffering serious flooding, especially Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima in the northeast is facing a water shortage with all of its 27 reservoirs now less than half full.

For an example, Lamtakong reservoir, which is the main source of water for Mueang, Sung Noen, Si Khio, Kham Thalae So and Chalerm Phra Kiat, now contains 92.26 million cubic meters of water, 30.6% of its capacity. Of that, only 25.2% of the water is usable. Continued … 

Roadside bomb injures eight soldiers in Narathiwat

Eight soldiers sustained injuries in a roadside explosion in Rangae district, Narathiwat, believed to be orchestrated by insurgents. The incident took place when an improvised bomb, tied to a power pole along a local road in Ban Hulu Pare, tambon Tanyongmat, was detonated as a military pickup truck carrying the soldiers drove past.

Mortgage growth forecast to plunge

Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research) expects 1.2% growth in mortgages within the commercial banking sector this year, the lowest level of expansion in 23 years. The low rate is attributed to the diminished purchasing power of home buyers.

Production index projected to decline 1% in 2024

Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) is likely to contract by 1% this year, given the declines recorded during the first eight months of the year, caused by a raft of economic problems and the impact of severe floods, says the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

The best-case scenario for MPI growth is a flat reading, said OIE Director-general Warawan Chitaroon. The office previously downgraded its MPI growth projection for 2024 from a range of 2%-3% to 0-1%. It revised down the range again on Thursday to between -1% and 0. Continued …

Team Mitsubishi To Compete in Asia Cross Country Rally in Hua Hin

Team Mitsubishi Ralliart will be taking on the Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) 2024 scheduled for Aug. 11 to 17. In this competition, which will be held in southern and central Thailand, the team will be driving four Triton1 pickup trucks, aiming to reclaim the title after two years.

A total of 67 vehicles will compete in this year’s AXCR – 46 in the auto category, 19 in the moto category, and 2 in the sidecar category. The rally proper begins with Leg 1 on Aug. 12. Leg 2 is the longest section of the competition, traveling from Surat Thani to Hua Hin, and is expected to be challenging, with large ruts and rock debris on the road surface. Move Forward Party dissolved, leaders banned for 10 years

The Constitutional Court of Thailand has announced a verdict to dissolve the Move Forward Party (MFP) over their efforts to reform the lese majeste law, also known as Section 112 of the Criminal Law, and ban the managing executives of the party for 10 years.

In April, the Election Commission of Thailand (ECT) requested that the Constitutional Court consider dissolving the MFP due to its promotion of the reformation of Section 112 during last year’s general election. The ECT argued that these reforms posed a threat to both the monarchy and the democratic form of government with the king as head of state. Continued …

New Day for Thailand After Court Dissolved Move Forward Party

In the end, the Constitutional Court today acted out of fear, citing eventual concerns that the monarchy institution will be eventually abolished if the main opposition Move Forward was allowed to continue to exist and charismatic former leader Pita Limjaroenrat allowed to hold political office. Thus, the party was dissolved and Pita along with about 10 others, including current party leader Chaithawat Tulathon, were banned from political office for 10 years.

This leads to the question as to whether Thailand can still call itself a democracy when disenfranchising 14 million voters, or the biggest winner in the May 2014 general election, means little or nothing as long as voters want to see the monarchy institution reformed instead of being treated like a semi-divine institution from the Middle Ages in Europe. Heavy flooding forces closures in Khao Yai National Park

Heavy flooding has led to the closure of key sites in Khao Yai National Park, impacting popular tourist destinations and local communities. Takhro Falls and the Sai Yai River in Prachinburi were shut down yesterday, while Nang Rong Falls in Nakhon Nayok followed suit today.

Majority of cybercrime victims in Thailand are working-age women

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) revealed that over two-thirds of cybercrime victims are women, with most being of working age. From March 1, 2022, to June 30 this year, there were 575,507 online complaints, totaling 65.715 billion baht in damages, averaging over 80 million baht per day.

RTP deputy spokesperson Sirivat Deephor highlighted that National Police Chief Torsak Sukwimol is deeply concerned about the public’s vulnerability to various forms of crime, especially cybercrime. Thai rice exports soar in June thanks to Indonesian demand boost

Thailand’s rice exports surged in June, driven by Indonesia’s increased demand to maintain food security, Thai Rice Exporters Assn. President Charoen Laothamatas said on Tuesday.

Airports of Thailand (AOT) stands to lose 143.32 million baht per month in rental and other revenues from Aug. 1 after closing all duty-free shops in the arrivals areas of five Thai airports, the agency announced during its board meeting on Tuesday.

The move to close duty-free shops was approved by the Cabinet on July 2 in a bid to boost spending in domestic shops, aiming to generate up to 350 billion baht annually. The measure will take effect from Aug. 1. Continued …

Hua Hin celebrates legacy of boxing champion Pone Kingpetch

The Hua Hin municipality commemorated the legendary Thai boxer Pone Kingpetch on the 64th anniversary of his historic world title win with a series of events yesterday honoring his contributions to the sport and his enduring legacy in the community.

The celebration took place at Pone Kingpetch Public Park, named after the celebrated athlete who was the first Thai to claim a world boxing championship. Cops up ante on foreign criminals

Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Police Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. 206 Deaths in 5 Days of ‘Songkran 7 Days Road Safety Campaign’

A total of 1,564 road accidents, with 1,593 injuries and 206 deaths, were reported on Tuesday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in five days (April 1115) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 1117).

The provinces with the total highest fatalities were Bangkok and Chiang Rai with 13 deaths each. The total highest number of accidents was Chiang Rai with 61 and the highest number of injuries was Nan with 60 injuries. Continued …

Most Thais waiting for 10,000-baht digital handout, opinion poll finds

Nearly 70% of Thais said they are ready to receive the 10,000-baht digital wallet handout that is being launched as an economic stimulus measure, a recent poll shows.

Under the scheme, all Thais aged 16 and above with a monthly income of less than 70,000 baht and bank deposits lower than 500,000 baht will receive 10,000 baht via a digital wallet to spend at local shops. Digital wallet ‘super app’ to link with bank apps

The so-called super app earmarked for the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme will work in sync with existing mobile applications for banks on users’ phones, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

The app, he explained, was developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) and the Digital Government Development Agency (DGA) for use in any digital-based policies. Gargantuan clean up after Songkran festivities

Songkran festivities around Bangkok metropolitan area resulted in 51,000 tons of waste, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday. This year’s waste statistics were collected from April 12 to 15, and are higher than the same period last year by about 1,000 tons, said the BMA.

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt said six water trucks and city officials were deployed to clean up this tourist attraction starting at 4am on Tuesday. Songkran revelers: More than 100 tons of garbage on Silom and Khao San roads

The three-day Songkran water splashing on Khao San Road was over on Monday night and left behind about 116 tons of garbage, mostly drinking water bottles, plastic bags, water guns, plastic buckets and traces of white clay flour, to be collected by city collectors.

Thailand’s foreign tourism boom: 10 million visitors fuel 500 billion windfall

Thailand has welcomed over 10 million foreign tourists this year alone, leading to revenue exceeding 500 billion baht, reported the Tourism and Sports Ministry. The data, up to date as of yesterday, shows 10,723,953 foreign visitors have contributed to an income of 518 billion baht (US$14 billion).

Tour Boat Catches Fire In Ayutthaya, All Aboard Rescued

A tourist boat caught fire as it was bringing 24 Thai tourists for a sight-seeing tour of the Chao Phraya River in Muang district of Ayutthaya province yesterday afternoon. All the tourists were, however, safely evacuated to another passing tourist boat.

Relocation of cadmium tailings from Bangkok commences May 7

The logistics of relocating cadmium tailings from Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri back to their original location in Tak is set to start on May 7. Bound & Beyond Plc, the company responsible for the task, has a deadline of 36 days to execute the operation, as stated by Pimphattra Wichaikul, the Industry Minister.

Pimphattra revealed yesterday that the committee in charge of the tailings’ transport has considered a revised plan. This revised plan involves the use of 30 trucks to relocate 450 tons of cadmium tailings per day, starting May 7. Thailand’s incredible nature reserve — where a trip costs just £7

Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. I watch for a while, then return inside, where it takes the nocturnal serenade of an Indian nightjar to lull me back to sleep.

Here’s the really wild part. My tent is pitched in Kaeng Krachan, Thailand’s largest national park and one of the world’s newest UNESCO heritage sites. It’s in the southwest, a £12 taxi ride from the golden beaches of the ritzy resort of Hua Hin, itself a £1 train ride from Bangkok. 162 killed in Songkran road accidents so far

Songkran’s notorious “seven dangerous days” have, as of Sunday, seen 1,259 traffic accidents, with 162 people killed and 1,279 injured. On Sunday, 317 accidents were reported, with 38 fatalities and 311 injuries.

The assistant national police chief said on Monday that many people have started making their way back to Bangkok and other big cities, opening the door to more accidents and heavy traffic. As part of measures to ensure safety, he said, Traffic Police will coordinate with their provincial counterparts and intensify checks at all roadblocks, especially near event venues and at night. Hua Hin discusses ways to combat drought season water shortage

In response to the looming water shortage during the hot season, officials at Hua Hin Municipality met on Friday to discuss ways to maintain an adequate water supply.

79 confirmed Covid cases at PKK prison

The Covid-19 situation at Prachuap Khiri Khan prison is set to be managed by an imminent emergency operations center (EOC), following the identification of infection clusters. This development comes as the public health permanent secretary, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, reported intensified surveillance in the wake of 79 confirmed Covid cases at the prison.

The first infection was detected on March 27 after a 35-year-old female inmate exhibiting influenza-like symptoms tested positive for Covid upon her admission to Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital. More than 80 tigers that were rescued from a temple in Thailand have died from a viral disease, according to local media reports.

Yesterday, a massive python and a baby monitor lizard were captured in Soi Thepanusorn. World’s worst smog chokes northern Thailand

Most provinces in the north were blanketed with dangerous red-coded levels of PM2.5 this morning, with Chiang Mai rated the city with the worst air pollution in the entire world.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 8am that 14 provinces were facing red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.9 to 173.6 micrograms per cubic metre of air over the past 24 hours. Two women found shot dead at property in Hua Hin

Police are currently investigating the deaths of two women found shot at a property in Hua Hin. The deceased, identified as a 63-year-old businesswoman and her 46-year-old secretary, were discovered on Sunday by the son of the older woman, after he grew concerned over his inability to contact his mother for several days.

Hazardous smog in 48 provinces

Forty-eight provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 on Monday morning and 11 provinces, mostly in the north, faced red levels of pollution, with Chiang Mai suffering the most.

Boy, 14, arrested for shooting death of teen in Hua Hin

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in downtown Hua Hin last Thursday evening. Hua Hin Police Station launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on Naresdamri close to the entrance to Hua Hin Fishing Pier.

Frequent use of mosquito spray urged as dengue death toll rises

In a warning against the spread of dengue fever, the Public Health Ministry has urged people to protect themselves by using anti-mosquito sprays and lotions.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Sunday that at the latest meeting of the National Communicable Disease Control committee, he learned that the number of dengue patients this year has risen to 17,783 cases, more than double the number compared to the same period last year. Three dog owners in Rayong’s Nikhom Phatthana district have asked police to take action against those responsible for poisoning their pets in separate incidents, resulting in the deaths of 36 animals. Somjit Palapol, a durian farmer, claims that his 19 dogs were poisoned on March 6, 17 of which died.

Phuket authorities will revoke the elephant foundation license of the Swiss man who allegedly kicked a Thai woman doctor on a beach, after canceling his gun licenses, according to the Phuket governor.

Majority of 12,000 Thais in Dubai are working illegally

Most of the 12,000 Thais employed in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are illegal workers who were lured with promises of high pay. There are only about 4,500 who are fully and correctly documented.

Nipa Nirannoot, the Thai consul-general in Dubai, said many Thai women have been lured to work in massage parlors, but end up being forced into prostitution.
