New tax era in Thailand begins

Thailand is moving toward greater integration with the international tax framework to stamp out tax avoidance and evasion. Significantly, it comes with the Revenue Department reporting a surge in income in the first few months of the fiscal year, which will also see foreign residents more closely scrutinized for tax.

The Excise Department plans to implement four tax measures for the environment and society this year, says Director-general Ekniti Nitithanprapas.

Thai national parks report record revenues and visitors in 2023

The Thai Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation disclosed the rankings of the top 10 highest-earning and most-visited national parks from the pool of 133 parks for the previous year.

Based on revenue from January to December 2023, the top 10 Thai national parks accumulated a total income of 1,651,868,101 baht (US$47 million). Hat Noppharat Thara–Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park in Krabi topped the chart with an income of 377,321,864 baht (US$10 million). The source from the Office of the Council of State said it would not be making public the advice, but it would let the government disclose the legal advisory council’s opinion. The Tha Chatchai Police said that on Saturday they were notified from a tour company in Phuket that a bus driver left tourists for apparently no reason at a shop in Kathu, Phuket. The recent waiver of travel visas for each other’s citizens by Thailand and China has resulted in a sharp increase in search of keywords related to Thailand and China, multinational travel service conglomerate Trip.com Group said. Thousands of noise complaints from 4am bar closing

2024 is a year of the Wood Dragon, starting from Feb. 10 (Chinese New Year) and ending on Jan. 28, 2025 (Chinese New Year’s Eve).

Social security fund faces bankruptcy in a decade

Thailand held groundbreaking elections on Christmas Eve for both employer and employee representatives in the administration of the country’s mammoth Social Security system and a fund valued at the end of 2022 at Bt2.36 trillion. Speedboat Crashes Into Rocks In Phuket, Killing Russian Girl

The Phuket Regional Harbor Office received a report of a marine accident at 3:30 pm on Dec. 31 from the Andaman Marine Traffic and Safety Control Center, stating that a speedboat carrying seven passengers, the captain and one crew member, totaling nine people, had crashed into the rocks on the shore of Mai Thon Island, Chalong subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket Province.

How New Year’s Day changed from April 13 to January 1 in Thailand

Jan. 1 first became New Year’s Day in Thailand in 1941 after the country abandoned its centuries-old custom of starting the new year on April 13, the first day of Songkran.

Free entry to national parks and wildlife sanctuaries on Dec 31 and Jan 1

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation will open all its national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, no-hunting areas and forest parks to the public free of charge this Sunday and Monday.

Holidaymakers hit the roads for the New Year break

The main arterial road to the northeast, known as the Friendship Road, was heavily congested yesterday as hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers head for home or to other holiday destinations in private and public transport, ahead of the official New Year break.

Six tour boats and a fishing vessel have sunk in the Gulf and the Andaman Sea in the past four days. Two passengers, a skipper and five crew are still missing.

Seventy Three Tourists Rescued after Speedboat Capsized in Satun

A tourist speedboat capsized near Bubu Island, about 3 kilometers from Satun’s Lipe Island, Sunday. The boat carried 73 tourists, including three children and four crew members.

The Navy’s 491st Special Warfare Squadron quickly responded to the emergency, rescuing everyone on board. The capsizing was caused by strong waves, leading to a breach in the hull. The passengers, all wearing life jackets, were safely transferred to another speedboat. Continued …

The cool weather in most of Thailand will continue today, with temperatures dropping by 1-2 degrees Celsius in the north, northeast, east and central regions.

Long way to go for Hua Hin Airport international status

Hua Hin’s long journey toward a fully functioning, modern airport has reached yet another juncture with the latest updates on its ongoing upgrades.

The long-standing issue of the airport’s inability to accommodate larger aircraft such as the A320, which seats up to 180 passengers, remains a significant hurdle. Plans to revamp the tunnel entry site, which requires expansion of the tunnel entering Hua Hin, a critical factor in this limitation, are underway with an additional 300 million baht allocated to the project. Thai Birth Rates Hit 71-Year Low

Anukul Peedkaew, the permanent secretary of the Thai Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), has published statistical data on the NationalThailand website on the rate of Thai children being born in the past year, showing the lowest rates in 71 years.

Phitsanulok police are investigating the legality of 87 guns and over 4,500 rounds of ammunition found on Friday at a luxury house in Muang district belonging to a famous YouTuber.

Police raids in response to murder plot linked with Bt1 billion family business concern

Thai police on Friday morning cut the head off a dangerous plot that was already in motion to murder a businessman, his mother and their lawyer. The suspected mastermind behind the diabolical scheme, however, turned out to be the man’s father and the woman’s estranged husband.

Police with the Crime Suppression Division (CSD) were alerted to the plot in November linked to a substantial business dispute. The matter became urgent in recent days when investigators detected three hit men pursuing the target while traveling in Bangkok. One of the three arrested on Friday is a former naval officer jailed for the 2006 murder of a police officer in Mae Sot, Tak province. He was recently released from prison. Continued …

House says yes to marriage equality

The House’s approval of all four bills seeking to amend the Civil and Commercial Code to allow same-sex marriages in the country during their first reading has received positive responses from members of society, according to government spokesman Chai Watcharonke.

The bills aim to amend 68 provisions under the Civil and Commercial Code to redefine terms to ensure gender equality and diversity. All four bills received 369 of 380 votes of approval, with one abstention, on Friday. The bills are expected to still be read for a second time. Continued …

PTT Exploration and Production Public Co. (PTTEP) has received the International Green Apple Awards for Environmental Best Practice 2023 in the environmental improvement category with gold level from the green organization, for the PTTEP reforestation project. The award ceremony was organized in London.

“We don’t want our brothers and sisters in other parts of the country to face the impacts we have been facing,” says Thanawan Kainok, addressing a panel discussion on the “Past, Present and Future of Potash in Isan” in Wanon Niwat district, in northeast Thailand’s Sakon Nakhon province.

In 2015, the China Mingda Potash Corp., a Chinese company registered in Thailand, received a license to survey this rural area for potential sites to mine potash – naturally occurring salts rich in potassium and sodium. Climate-smart rice farming the future

Rice is Thailand’s most important food crop and an integral part of Thai culture and society. At the same time, rice farmers remain among the poorest occupational groups in Thailand and are extremely vulnerable to the impacts of a changing climate — rice farming is a water-intensive and temperature-sensitive activity conducted in a climate that is becoming increasingly characterized by longer dry spells and higher temperatures.

In addition, rice farming is a significant source of greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change, particularly methane: about half of Thailand’s agricultural emissions come from rice farming, according to the Thai Biennial Update Report to the UN. Continued …
