Hua Hin takes ‘long term’ measures to improve water supply

Hua Hin is making strides to address the region’s water supply challenges amid a severe drought by enhancing its infrastructure. On Tuesday, Siraphan Kamonpramot, adviser to the mayor of Hua Hin, led the 12th Coordination, Monitoring, and Inspection Committee meeting to discuss the water supply crisis.

During the meeting, Deputy Mayor Atichat Chaisri detailed plans to install a new raw water pipeline to bolster the production of tap water. This 1,000mm-diameter raw water pipeline will connect to the existing HDPE pipe system in Bo Fai, linking to the Phetchaburi irrigation project’s end point. Continued …

Heatwave Spurs High Power Demand in Thailand

Thailand is in the grip of a record-breaking heatwave, driving the nation’s power demand to enormous levels. The Thai Meteorological Department reported that over three dozen districts across the country’s 77 provinces experienced their highest ever temperatures for April, the traditionally hottest month, with some records breaking those set in 1958.

Extreme heat bends railway tracks

Extremely hot weather warped rails in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, and it took railway workers about an hour to cool them down to make the tracks usable again, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said on Wednesday.

Investment pledges jump 31%

Investment pledges to Thailand were up 31% in the first quarter of 2024 when compared to the same period a year earlier, the Board of Investment (BOI) said today.

Exports down but manufacturers told not to worry

Thailand’s export value in March dropped to $24.96 billion, a decline of 10.9% year on year and the lowest in eight months. The contraction was also the largest in the region, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday.

China’s exports in March contracted by 7.5%, Malaysia’s were down by 6.1%, Indonesia’s by 4.2%, and Singapore’s by 3.4%, TNSC President Chaicharn Charoensuk reported. Taiwan and Vietnam, however, saw increased exports in March at 18.9% and 13%, respectively. Continued …

I wish I were this good when it comes to picking winning lottery tickets. Just a few days ago, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) lowered its 2024 GDP growth projection from 2.8% to 2.4%, citing blah, blah, blah.

Bangkok Metropolitan Police arrested a 20-year-old woman for allegedly creating fake accommodation booking pages to scam and defraud victims. Despite her denial of any wrongdoing, the Thai authorities affirm that the evidence against the woman, Kanyawee Prompichai, is substantial.

A study recently published in the eBioMedicine journal shows that human-induced climate change could increase the mortality rate in patients with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), especially among vulnerable groups, based on a survey in China.

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

The hope is, in spite of El Nino, that the current dry season will give way to rainfall from the middle of May. The IEAT governor, Veeris Ammarapala, said there was no immediate crisis as the region’s 6,000 factories had additional water supplies from reservoir transfers, the purchase of raw water from companies and the facility of wastewater treatment to reuse the resource. The Livestock Development Department has warned that eggs will become more expensive because hens and ducks are laying fewer eggs due to the heatwave.

The department said on Tuesday that the sweltering heat has prompted many poultry farms to report a significant drop in egg production and seek permission to raise prices. Foreigners and their overseas income: what next?

More than three months after “assessable” foreign income became taxable, many of Thailand’s expats are still swimming in a sea of uncertainty. Lots of advice online, but few definite answers. Senior officers from the Revenue (Department) have said little of late, although there has been a half-promise to the Swiss ambassador in a televised interview to print the tax identification forms in English as well as in Thai.

There is a view among some Thai lawyers that we must wait until July for clarification on nitty-gritty issues such as double taxation treaties and the tax status of pensions. By that time, some expats will have passed 180 days of minimum residence necessary for tax liability in this category. Continued …

Central bank calls for review of digital wallet scheme

The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has suggested that the government restrict the digital wallet cash benefit scheme to around 15 million financially vulnerable individuals, instead of the planned 50 million in its proposal. Japanese account for more than half of total foreign investments in Q1

Thailand received nearly 36 billion baht in investments from foreigners during the first quarter of the year, the Department of Business Development said.

Japanese investors topped the list, accounting for 19.006 billion of the 35.902 billion baht invested by foreigners, or more than half, Oramon Sapthaweetham, director-general of the department, said. A total of 178 foreign nationals had been permitted to invest in businesses during January-March under the Foreign Business Act BE 2542 (1999). Thailand’s home building market is showing signs of growth this year, even though rising costs, a labor shortage, and buyer sentiment remain major challenges, Worawut Kanchanakul, president of the Home Builders Assn., said on Tuesday. Car production in Thailand dropped 23.08% in March from a year earlier to 138,331 units, the Federation of Thai Industries said today.

Temperatures could rise to 43 °C today

Much of Thailand will experience extreme heat today, the Thai Meteorological Department warns, with temperatures in some areas likely to peak at 43°C. Scattered thunderstorms are possible, particularly in the southern region, with rainfall covering around 30% of the area.

The Bangkok metropolitan region will bake under partly cloudy skies with a maximum temperature of 41°C. The public are advised to take care of their health and avoid working outdoors or engaging in outdoor activities for extended periods. Continued … 

How many more lives have to be lost to restless driving?

Over the weekend, social media was buzzing with yet another accident, this time a pedestrian was hit by a motorcycle while he was trying to cross the zebra crossing – and this zebra crossing had traffic signals to stop vehicles for the pedestrian to be able to cross.

The video shows that the pedestrian waited for the zebra crossing’s light to turn green (meaning the pedestrian could cross, while the vehicles had to stop), before he opted to cross. He managed to cross the street on one side but as soon as he stepped on to the second road to cross, an oncoming motorcycle did not stop on the red light and slammed the pedestrian. Continued …

COVID-19 surges during Songkran festival

More than a thousand people were admitted for treatment of COVID-19 infections between April 14-20, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director of the Department of Disease Control. Of those admitted to hospitals, 292 are suffering from lung infections and 101 require ventilators to help with breathing. Three have died and all were either elderly people or had comorbidities.

Thongchai said that the surge in COVID cases during the Songkran festival was not unexpected and most of the cases were found in and around Bangkok and in tourist provinces. Continued …

Younger patients’ neck pain rises, smartphone overuse a key factor

Construction coordinator Jonathan Wu found himself often glued to his mobile devices during the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, and because he was working from home, his lifestyle was sedentary. At the time, he was no longer visiting project sites, and he attended meetings online using his smartphone or computer.

Said Wu, 34: “I developed a bad habit where I cradled my phone on one side of my neck while working, causing my neck to tilt at an odd angle for prolonged periods.” Continued …

Part of Kanchanaburi Motorway open for toll-free travel on weekends

A segment of the Kanchanaburi Motorway, from Nakhon Pathom West to Kanchanaburi, will be temporarily opened for toll-free travel on weekends. The toll-free travel over a 51km distance starts from April 26. Only private four-wheelers are allowed on the motorway. Vehicles should have sufficient fuel/charge for the journey. Eateries push for casinos in 2nd-tier regions

The Thai Restaurant Assn. is asking the government to consider building an integrated entertainment complex, featuring casino, hotel, shopping mall, amusement park and restaurants, in a second-tier area, promoting local dishes to sell in the complex.

“Neighboring countries have their own casinos and many Thais cross the borders to gamble at them,” said Thaniwan Kulmongkol, president of the association, adding Thailand has many entertainment complexes, but no casinos. Continued …

About 3,000 Myanmar nationals flee fighting to Tak

About 3,000 Myanmar people fled Myawaddy to Mae Sot district of Tak to take refuge from escalating battles between Myanmar junta forces and ethnic troops, according to officials.

Foreign Affairs Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara said on Sunday that the number of Myanmar refugees in Mae Sot rose to about 3,000 and they were under supervision of the Interior Ministry. Continued …

Thai government’s OFOS project to create 20 million jobs from June

The Thai government has plans to set in motion the One Family One Soft Power (OFOS) project in June, hoping to generate 20 million employment opportunities with a minimum yearly wage of 200,000 baht, according to Paetongtarn Shinawatra, head of the National Committee on Soft Power Development and leader of the Pheu Thai party.

Paetongtarn shed light on the forthcoming OFOS, disclosing that the scheme will offer free-of-charge up-skilling and re-skilling courses. Citizens can register for these courses beginning in early June via an online platform like an application or website, as well as through local offices of the National Village Fund and the Urban Community Office. The National Statistical Office (NSO) has revealed that over 5 million senior Thais, with the majority lacking formal education, continue to work to sustain their livelihoods.

Canal water? Really? 65 Children Infected With Rotavirus at Songkran Foam Party

A Songkran foam party at Suphanburi led to 65 children being hospitalized for nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and high fever after getting infected with Rotavirus, with the organizers admitting canal water was used because tap water was not enough for the event.

Thailand is grappling with a surge in road accidents, with an alarming tally of 2,044 mishaps leading to 2,060 injuries and a tragic loss of 287 lives. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) released these figures as part of their Seven Days of Road Safety Campaign, which covered the Songkran festival period from April 11 to April 17.

The fishing boats in the distance begin to set out for the day’s first catch, and the silhouettes of Monkey Mountain and the Buddha statue are bathed in golden hues. Hua Hin celebrates legacy of boxing champion Pone Kingpetch

The Hua Hin municipality commemorated the legendary Thai boxer Pone Kingpetch on the 64th anniversary of his historic world title win with a series of events yesterday honoring his contributions to the sport and his enduring legacy in the community.

The celebration took place at Pone Kingpetch Public Park, named after the celebrated athlete who was the first Thai to claim a world boxing championship. Cops up ante on foreign criminals

Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Police Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. 206 Deaths in 5 Days of ‘Songkran 7 Days Road Safety Campaign’

A total of 1,564 road accidents, with 1,593 injuries and 206 deaths, were reported on Tuesday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in five days (April 1115) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 1117).

The provinces with the total highest fatalities were Bangkok and Chiang Rai with 13 deaths each. The total highest number of accidents was Chiang Rai with 61 and the highest number of injuries was Nan with 60 injuries. Continued …

Nearly 70% of Thais said they are ready to receive the 10,000-baht digital wallet handout that is being launched as an economic stimulus measure, a recent poll shows.

Under the scheme, all Thais aged 16 and above with a monthly income of less than 70,000 baht and bank deposits lower than 500,000 baht will receive 10,000 baht via a digital wallet to spend at local shops. Digital wallet ‘super app’ to link with bank apps

The so-called super app earmarked for the 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme will work in sync with existing mobile applications for banks on users’ phones, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

Gargantuan clean up after Songkran festivities

Songkran festivities around Bangkok metropolitan area resulted in 51,000 tons of waste, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday. This year’s waste statistics were collected from April 12 to 15, and are higher than the same period last year by about 1,000 tons, said the BMA.

Songkran revelers: More than 100 tons of garbage on Silom and Khao San roads

The three-day Songkran water splashing on Khao San Road was over on Monday night and left behind about 116 tons of garbage, mostly drinking water bottles, plastic bags, water guns, plastic buckets and traces of white clay flour, to be collected by city collectors.

Thailand’s foreign tourism boom: 10 million visitors fuel 500 billion windfall

Thailand has welcomed over 10 million foreign tourists this year alone, leading to revenue exceeding 500 billion baht, reported the Tourism and Sports Ministry. The data, up to date as of yesterday, shows 10,723,953 foreign visitors have contributed to an income of 518 billion baht (US$14 billion).

Tour Boat Catches Fire In Ayutthaya, All Aboard Rescued

A tourist boat caught fire as it was bringing 24 Thai tourists for a sight-seeing tour of the Chao Phraya River in Muang district of Ayutthaya province yesterday afternoon. All the tourists were, however, safely evacuated to another passing tourist boat.

Relocation of cadmium tailings from Bangkok commences May 7

The logistics of relocating cadmium tailings from Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri back to their original location in Tak is set to start on May 7. Bound & Beyond Plc, the company responsible for the task, has a deadline of 36 days to execute the operation, as stated by Pimphattra Wichaikul, the Industry Minister.

Pimphattra revealed yesterday that the committee in charge of the tailings’ transport has considered a revised plan. This revised plan involves the use of 30 trucks to relocate 450 tons of cadmium tailings per day, starting May 7. Thailand’s incredible nature reserve — where a trip costs just £7

Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. I watch for a while, then return inside, where it takes the nocturnal serenade of an Indian nightjar to lull me back to sleep.

During his visit to Hua Hin yesterday, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, after previously touring Hua Hin’s new railroad station, made his way to the Chat Chai market, where he ordered grilled pork skewers from Anan Thongbutdee, the 67-year-old owner.

He ordered a substantial amount including grilled pork skewers, grilled meatballs, and sticky rice sufficient to feed about a hundred people, all to be delivered to his condo the next evening. Anan, who the PM has ordered food from many times in the past, will personally prepare 500 pork skewers, 200 meatball skewers, and 100 packets of sticky rice for the occasion. – HHT

Hot Songkran weekend ahead

Scorching heat is expected over the Songkran Thai New Year holiday that wraps up on Monday. Surajit Jit-areerat from the Meteorological Department on Friday said hot weather conditions would continue over the weekend after many parts of the country recently experienced summer storms.

25 killed, 248 injured in road accidents on first day of Songkran travel

Twenty-five people were killed and 248 others injured in 234 road accidents across the country on Thursday, Chaiwat Chuntirapong, director-general of the Department of Public Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, told a press conference today.

Forty-four percent of the accidents were caused by speeding, 20.9% by cutting in and 16.7% by drunk driving; 86% of the accidents involved motorcycles and 85.9% took place on straight roads, 47% on main roads and 23.5% on secondary roads. Water disruption daily from 9:30am-3:30pm daily

Hua Hin’s mayor has confirmed that the water supply to large parts of Hua Hin will be suspended from yesterday ahead of the Songkran festival, which will still go ahead and which is due to get underway from today.

Hua Hin’s water management authorities have said there will be a temporary suspension of the water supply from the Khao Laeng water production plant. The suspension, aimed at reallocating water resources to meet the festival’s heightened demand, will affect significant portions of the city from 9:30am to 3:30pm. Continued …

Interior Ministry slashes mortgage, transfer fees to boost property sales

Two directives from the Interior Ministry were published in the Royal Gazette on Wednesday in a bid to boost the sale of property in line with the Cabinet’s resolution on the previous day. The directives go into immediate effect.
