Pranburi Dam’s water level plummets to 29.7%

As part of an urgent response to the escalating drought situation in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Gov. Somkid Chanthamaruk, accompanied by Deputy Gov. Sinathorn Oeam and other provincial leaders, visited Pranburi district to assess the problem first hand.

Huai Yang Waterfall National Park closes April 1 due to drought

Huai Yang Waterfall National Park in Thap Sakae will temporarily close to tourists starting April 1.

This decision, announced on Tuesday by Somjet Chantana, director of the administration office for Conservation Area 3 (Phetchaburi Branch), comes after consultations with Rakpong Boonyoi, the head of Huai Yang Waterfall National Park. Diesel subsidy to end, prices may rise as fuel fund bleeds red

With the Oil Fuel fund in the red about 100 billion baht from subsidizing the diesel price, measures are being drafted by the Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) to propose to the Energy and Finance ministries to help ease the burden on the fund.

Among the measures under consideration are raising the cap on the retail price of diesel from today’s 30 baht per liter, and increasing an excise tax cut on diesel fuel from the current 1 baht per liter, a news source familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. Continued …

A recent revelation has shaken the Thai law enforcement scene, as a lawyer uncovered a gang, allegedly linked to the police, involved in an extensive bribery racket. The racket reportedly amasses over 100 million baht each month through illicit kickbacks.

A Thai police officer dismissed a complaint from a Norwegian man and his Thai girlfriend who lost 30,000 baht in cash and a mobile phone to four pickpockets outside a shopping mall in Bangkok. The Thai cop allegedly told the foreigner it was his fault, a result of bad karma in their past lives.

Car production drops 19.3%

Car production in Thailand fell 19.3% in February from a year earlier to 133,690 units, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on Tuesday, largely due to a decline in production of pickup trucks and more imported electric vehicles (EVs).

‘Selective’ wage hike expected to fill Hua Hin tourism jobs

The Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) on Tuesday estimated that the government’s policy of raising the minimum wage in 10 tourism provinces to 400 baht per day will attract workers from other sectors to shift to tourism, thus further boosting the industry’s capacity. The committee approved a minimum wage increase to 400 baht per day for tourism-related businesses and four-star hotels with at least 50 employees in some areas in 10 provinces, effective April 13.

Northern Thailand’s persistent wildfires exacerbate air pollution

Wildfires persist in northern Thailand, contributing to a surge in air pollution despite recent downpours. As of Monday, Mae Hong Son recorded 6,646 wildfires this year, predominantly in the districts of Mueang Mae Hong Son, Pai, and Mae Sariang. This has led to Mae Hong Son exceeding safe levels of airborne particulates for 38 consecutive days.

Tackling PM2.5 could increase Thai lifespan by nearly 2 years

Thai people’s lifespan has dropped by 1.78 years due to PM2.5 air pollution, according to research published by the Kasikorn Research Center.

On the other hand, Thai people’s lifespan would increase by 1.78 years if the average PM2.5 reading does not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic meter, which is in-line with the World Health Organization standard. PM2.5 refers to particles that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter. Continued …

Thailand’s Zero Waste Practices

Thailand is experiencing a significant increase in waste generation due to factors such as population growth, urbanization, and economic development. In 2021, approximately 24.98 million tons of solid waste was generated, equivalent to about 68,434 tons per day. This means, on average, one person produces about 1.03 kg of waste per day.

Steam train pulls passengers back 128 years to birth of Thailand’s railway

Passengers were whisked back to the romantic age of rail travel on Tuesday when they boarded a steam train for a special trip from Bangkok to Ayutthaya to mark the State Railway of Thailand (SRT)’s 128th birthday.

Hot weather warning issued for Thailand

The Thailand Meteorological Department has warned of hot weather throughout Thailand today, with temperatures rising to 39C in Bangkok and 40C elsewhere in the central region and the north.

It also forecasts a 20% chance of thunderstorms and advises people to take care of their health in hot weather conditions. Thunderstorms may occur in the lower northeast, central region, and east regions due to moisture-laden winds from the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea. Continued …

A national committee to devise a policy on battling the PM2.5 problem, and an agency to manage the smog are needed to address the nation’s air pollution, according to the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI).

Thais Among Top Target Of Cyber Criminals In Asia

The Bank of Thailand revealed that Thais are among cyber criminals favorite targets in Asia, and as these scammers continuously come up with new tactics it led to a total of 56,746 online fraud cases in January this year, with 3.981 billion baht being stolen.

Pinyo Tripetcharaporn, director of the central bank’s Overall Risk Management Department, said that statistics show of the total cyber fraud cases in January, 46% involved being deceived in making online purchases, followed by 10% being tricked to borrow money and 7% duped into transferring money. Transport ministry investigating 10,600+ complaints about taxis

Thailand’s Transport Ministry says it’s considering new measures to address a raft of complaints about taxis after a huge number of complaints in a 6-month period.

According to a report, the ministry has received over 10,600 complaints from taxi passengers. In response, officials say they plan to introduce measures to improve taxi services to ensure they are “convenient, safe, and reasonably priced”. Continued …

Big Bike Collision in Phuket Claims Three Lives

Yesterday, Chalong police officers received an accident report of a big bike colliding with a motorbike on Wiset Road, Mueang Phuket, claiming three lives and one serious injury.

Phuket emergency services and police officers were dispatched to the accident scene and found a blue big bike and a white motorbike overturned on the road. Nearby, two bodies of foreigners and one Thai body were on the road, whose names were publicly identified only as Mr. Kristofer, 36, Mr. Magnus, 52, and Mrs. Kanokkan, 44, respectively. Continued …

New compensation guidelines after surge in monkey attacks

A government committee has come up with new regulations for compensation to victims of monkey attacks in response to a spate of attacks by rogue monkeys in Lopburi. Under the new regulation, a maximum of 100,000 baht will be paid in case of death or disability.

The committee in charge of managing funds for wildlife protection convened a meeting on Friday and issued new compensation regulations, which went into effect on Saturday. Continued …

Monkey attacks keep Koh Chang park officials at bay

Koh Chang park officials are fed up with a growing number of macaques that pose a danger to local residents and tourists, as well as damaging property.

Neramit Songsagne, chief of Mu Koh Chang National Park, said on Sunday the park is mulling two plans to manage the marauding monkeys, either by sterilizing them to control their reproduction or moving them off the island to new sanctuaries on the mainland. The park is awaiting recommendations from a study by the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation on the impact of the monkeys on the island, the official added. Continued …

First Lopburi monkeys relocating Monday to reduce attacks, injuries

The Parks department will today temporarily move the first group of Lopburi monkeys into a special enclosure at a Wildlife Rescue Center, before later moving them to a “monkey garden”, in order to control a population that has become increasingly aggressive while stealing food and attacking people, causing injury to several individuals.

Suspected insurgents carried out coordinated attacks on at least 39 locations in four southernmost provinces in the early hours of Friday, leaving at least one person dead, local security authorities said.

Groups move ahead in replacing overhead wiring

Four major organizations – the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration – have joined forces to replace overhead cables with underground ones along 116 routes. Scientists have been spooked by the ghoulish discovery of a ghost shark swimming off the Andaman coast of Thailand. Researchers revealed the ghost shark is a new species named Chimaera supapae. It boasts a formidable head, oversized eyes, and delicate, feather-like fins.

Big problems, and big tax income, from legalized casinos

Thailand could receive an income of 50 billion to 100 billion baht per year were casinos legaliszed, money that could be put toward taxes and national development, according to Thanawat Phonwichai, president of the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

Fifty provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 dust this morning and 13 of them, mainly in the north, with seriously harmful levels of pollution.

The worst reading was in Mae Hong Son and the cleanest air was in Phuket. The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported that the highest level of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) was detected in the northern province of Mae Hong Son, at 159.1 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. The Kasikorn Research Center (KResearch) has downgraded its Thai economic projection for 2024 to a growth of 2.8 %, from its previous forecast of 3.1 % issued in December.

Burin Adulwattana, managing director and chief economist of KResearch, said, “The global economy in 2024 is expected to grow at the same level as was seen in 2023. Global trade is likely to resume growth while global interest rates will gradually decline as inflation falls to the target level set by central banks worldwide. Wage committee unlikely to raise Thai minimum wage to 400 baht

An anticipated meeting of the tripartite wage committee later this month is expected to sanction a second increase in the minimum daily wage for this year. However, the Employers’ Confederation of Thai Trade and Industry (EconThai) suggests the approved hike is unlikely to take the wage to the 400 baht mark.

Two women found shot dead at property in Hua Hin

Police are currently investigating the deaths of two women found shot at a property in Hua Hin. The deceased, identified as a 63-year-old businesswoman and her 46-year-old secretary, were discovered on Sunday by the son of the older woman, after he grew concerned over his inability to contact his mother for several days.

Traveling from Bangkok to Hua Hin, he arrived at his mother’s home to find it securely locked, with the air conditioning still running. Upon entering the house through a back window, he was met with a foul smell, prompting him to alert local authorities. Continued …

Anthrax outbreak in Laos prompts raw meat warning in Thailand

Kenika Ounjit, a deputy government spokesperson, yesterday revealed a public health warning from the Department of Livestock Development. The warning urged the public to refrain from consuming raw meat. This follows a report of an anthrax outbreak in Laos.

According to the report, three cases of anthrax were identified on March 4 in the Soukhoumma district of the Lao province of Champasak. This province shares a border with Thailand’s eastern Ubon Ratchathani province, raising concerns for potential cross-border transmission, said Kenika, highlighting raw beef, buffalo, goat, and sheep meat as potential carriers of the bacterium. Hazardous smog in 48 provinces

Forty-eight provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of PM2.5 on Monday morning and 11 provinces, mostly in the north, faced red levels of pollution, with Chiang Mai suffering the most.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency reported at 10am on Monday that the highest level of particulate matter, 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), was detected in the northern province of Chiang Mai, at 125.3 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Boy, 14, arrested for shooting death of teen in Hua Hin

A 14-year-old boy has been arrested following the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old in downtown Hua Hin last Thursday evening. Hua Hin Police Station launched an investigation into the incident, which happened on Naresdamri close to the entrance to Hua Hin Fishing Pier.

The shooting not only claimed the life of the young victim, known as “Nong Din,” but also left his 16-year-old friend seriously injured after being caught in the gunfire. Continued …

Frequent use of mosquito spray urged as dengue death toll rises

In a warning against the spread of dengue fever, the Public Health Ministry has urged people to protect themselves by using anti-mosquito sprays and lotions.

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said on Sunday that at the latest meeting of the National Communicable Disease Control committee, he learned that the number of dengue patients this year has risen to 17,783 cases, more than double the number compared to the same period last year. Someone is poisoning Rayong’s dogs, 36 dead so far

Three dog owners in Rayong’s Nikhom Phatthana district have asked police to take action against those responsible for poisoning their pets in separate incidents, resulting in the deaths of 36 animals. Somjit Palapol, a durian farmer, claims that his 19 dogs were poisoned on March 6, 17 of which died.

Michelin plans to invest 300 million euros in Thailand

The government said on Friday French tire maker Michelin planned to invest 300 million euros (11.63 billion baht) in Thailand over the next three years to increase production capacity.

Michelin has already invested more than €1 billion in Thailand with five plants and 8,000 workers, the government said in a statement issued during Prime Minister and Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin’s visit to France, where he met with company executives. Continued …

When the lights dimmed on the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand awards in Bangkok on Dec. 13, history had been made. Chudaree Debhakam of Baan Tepa had become the first Thai female chef to lead a two-Michelin-star restaurant and Garima Arora the first female Indian chef to clinch two stars for her dining room Gaa.

Both women are very much in the minority, not just within Bangkok’s culinary community but in the international food world. Just over 6% of Michelin-starred establishments globally — one, two and three stars combined — are currently helmed by female chefs.
