Bangkok struggles with escalating PM2.5 levels

Bangkok is grappling with a severe rise in PM2.5 levels, necessitating immediate intervention from the government. Nearly 29 of the city’s 50 districts have recorded PM2.5 concentrations surpassing 35 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3), making the air unfit for breathing.

The districts with the highest PM2.5 concentrations include Bangkok Yai (105.1μg/m3), Thonburi (104.8μg/m3), Nong Khaem (103.7μg/m3), Khlong San (100.6μg/m3), and Bang Kho Laem (99.5μg/m3), according to data from the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA). Continued …

Hazardous smog moves to north, west

The levels of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns, known as PM2.5, reached dangerous levels in parts of the north and the western region this morning, while Samut Songkhram was the only province in the red zone, indicating PM2.5 readings exceeded the acceptable standard of 50 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported at 9am today that the central province of Samut Songkhram, located west of Bangkok, recorded 77.1 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Continued …

NEPC plans to cap power tariff for Thai households at current rate

The National Energy Policy Council (NEPC), in its recent meeting, moved to limit the power tariff for households consuming not more than 300 units a month at the existing rate of 3.99 baht per unit, an insider familiar with the meeting discussions revealed.

In the NEPC meeting, led by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, two main points were reviewed, both related to the proposed tariff of 4.68 baht per unit for the period of January to April of the upcoming year. This proposed rate, an increase of 17.3% from the current tariff, was sanctioned by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Nov. 30. Continued …

Thailand has welcomed two new two-star and six additional one-star restaurants in the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand edition, which consists of 447 food establishments: seven with two Michelin Stars, 28 with one Michelin star, 196 Bib Gourmand, and 216 Michelin Selected venues.

The 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand edition adds two Michelin stars listings – Baan Tepa, serving a contemporary Thai tasting menu, and the contemporary Indian restaurant GAA. The new entries have been promoted from their one-star rating in the previous list. Continued …

Thai cuisine ranked 17th in list of 100 best cuisines in the world

Thailand’s cuisine has been ranked 17th in the “100 Best Cuisine in the World” list released by TasteAtlas.com on Tuesday.

Thai cuisine was given a score of 4.48 by the website, which features recipes and food reviews from critics across the world. In top position is Italy with a score of 4.65, followed by Japan, also with 4.65, and Greece with 4.64. Continued …

Fine Arts Dept wants speedy return of Thai artifacts from USA

The Thai government should expedite its efforts to retrieve Thai artifacts stolen from Si Thep historical park in Phetchabun province and currently held in the United States, said Phanombootra Chandrajoti, director general of the Fine Arts Department.

“A major challenge facing Thailand, after Si Thep historical park was recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in September, is to collaborate with the U.S. in reclaiming artifacts, stolen from Si Thep more than 60 years ago, from museums in the U.S.,” he said. Continued …

ADB cuts Thailand’s 2023 economic growth forecast to 2.5%

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has lowered its economic forecast for Thailand in 2023 from 3.5% growth to 2.5%, citing export contraction, reduced government spending, and lower investment from both the public and private sectors.

Wage hike unlikely to push up prices

Increases to the daily minimum wage are unlikely to have a substantial effect on the domestic prices of goods and services, insisted the Commerce Ministry’s planning unit.

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), said the analysis conducted by the office on the impact of the minimum wage adjustment by the tripartite wage committee on inflation showed an average daily minimum wage increase of 2.37% to 345 baht would lead to a modest uptick in inflation, about 0.13–0.25%. German who skipped bail on sexual assault of a minor charge in Pattaya named

Top cop Gen.Surachate Hakparn on Wednesday confirmed disciplinary action and a criminal investigation against two senior police officers in Pattaya in response to the shocking Deutsche Welle TV documentary on the country’s sex industry aired days ago. He also named the 55-year-old German suspect charged with the sexual assault of a minor under 18 years of age, 55-year-old Jens Kirch, as the man at the center of the story who skipped bail after his arrest in September 2022.

The deputy national police chief, who was appointed by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to get to the bottom of the affair, pointed out that while Thailand does not have an extradition treaty with Germany, he plans, in due course, to speak with the German ambassador to Thailand to pursue the matter further. A Thai woman asked a hospital located in the Pak Kret district of Nonthaburi province, near Bangkok, to explain a 250,000 baht bill related to her four-day medical treatment. The hospital later returned 100,000 baht, acknowledging it had mistaken her for a foreigner.

Thai rice varieties will no longer enter world’s best rice competition

Thailand did not participate in the World’s Best Rice 2023 competition, held during the International World Rice Commission in Cebu, the Philippines, and will not do so in the coming years, Chukiat Opaswongse, honorary president of Thai Rice Exporters Assn. (TREA), said yesterday.

His announcement came one day after Vietnam’s rice variety, ST25, was voted the best rice variety of the 30 varieties submitted for competition. Michelin adds 32 Thai eateries to its 2024 Bib Gourmand selection

Inflation declines in November, lowest in 33 months

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) came in at -0.44% in November from a year earlier, the second consecutive month and lowest in nearly three years, the commerce ministry said today.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has projected a shortfall in its annual tourism revenue target, with this year’s earnings expected to reach 2.07 trillion baht (US$ 58,773,427,200) instead of the projected 2.38 trillion baht (US$ 67,575,244,800).

The Songkran Festival of Thailand has been included in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity list. The official announcement was made during UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Committee meeting for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Botswana.

Electricity and fuel prices are expected to increase next year

Consumers are advised to brace for increases in the prices of electricity and fuel next year, even though the government will try its best to minimize the rises.

After the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed an increase in the price of electricity, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht/unit for January-April, the Ministry of Energy is to hold consultations with the ERC on how to trim the fuel tariff (FT), averaging 89.55 satang/unit, to limit the proposed increase, which is considered by the government to be too large. PM rejects electricity tariff hike proposal

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin rejected the electricity tariff hike approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Saturday, explaining that he was worried the increase would be too burdensome for consumers. Most of the general public are currently facing rising cost of living. Srettha added that the increase could hurt the government’s popularity in the next general election.

Informal debtors owing Bt1.5 billion flood govt mediation service

Over 37,000 people owing a combined 1.5 billion baht applied for the government’s informal-debt resolution program in its first two days, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Permanent Secretary Suttipong Juljarern revealed that 37,579 people had registered for debt mediation as of Saturday at 4pm. Of these, 36,338 registered online, while 1,241 visited Debt Relief Assistance Centers set up around the country. Electricity rise capped at 4.20 baht per unit from January

The new electricity rate will not exceed 4.20 baht per unit when adjusted in January next year, the Energy Ministry said on Friday.

The announcement came after the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Wednesday set the fuel tariff (FT) for January to April at 4.68 baht per unit, a rise of 0.69 baht. However, the ministry said 4.68 baht per unit was just the ERC’s suggested rate. Continued …

The Bank of Thailand (BoT) predicts gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 3.7% in the final quarter this year, attributed to the low-base effect amid a continued recovery driven by private consumption and tourism. The central bank forecasts 2023 GDP growth of 2.4%.

In the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) reported yesterday, Thailand’s grasp of the English language has been categorized as “very low proficiency,” ranking 101st out of 113 non-native English-speaking countries.

Prachuap Khiri Khan recorded the lowest score of the Thai provinces included in the survey. With a score of just 299, Prachuap Khiri Khan’s proficiency level is markedly lower than other provinces, such as Chiang Mai, which top-scored with 464, followed by Bangkok (457), Phuket (456), and Songkhla (437). – HHT

Thai investigators crack down on Makro for shady swine supplies

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) raided Makro, a popular cash-and-carry store warehouse in Thailand after discovering the store ordered illegal pork products from a company previously indicted for illicit imports.

Lantern blamed for burning Chiang Mai market

A fire broke out at nine buildings within Rim Ping Flower Market in the northern province of Chiang Mai at 3am yesterday. A witness claimed the blaze was triggered when a lantern from the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng Lantern Festival fell onto the buildings.

Phuket officials accused of extorting Thai women and their foreign husbands

Multiple Thai women accused officials at district offices in Phuket of extorting money from them and their foreign husbands. The alleged malpractice involves overcharging them between 3,000 to 8,000 baht for marriage certificates, a substantial increase from the standard 200-baht fee.

A halt on issuing gun licenses for a year has been authorized by Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul as part of an effort to reduce gun violence, announced Traisuree Taisaranakul, secretary to the interior minister. Cabinet approves THB3.48-trillion budget for fiscal year 2024

Thailand’s exports expected to contract this year

The Thai National Shippers’ Council has predicted that Thailand’s exports this year would contract 1.5% year-on-year.

Council chief Chaicharn Charoensuk said although Thailand’s exports had started to see a brighter trend, its growth would remain negative because of the contraction earlier in the year. Nearly 130 companies in Thailand that violated labor rights have been blacklisted, while six Myanmar companies sending workers to Thailand have had their licenses revoked temporarily, according to the Ministry of Labor.
