WFFT Sanctuary Welcomes New Arrival: the World’s Rarest Otter

Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) has welcomed a new arrival, a species of otter so rare that it was once believed to be extinct.

Electricity tariffs: Potential 6 baht/unit increase expected next year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed three options for determining electricity tariffs for the first quarter of next year. The electricity tariffs could potentially increase to a peak of 6 baht per unit. The ERC disclosed that if there are proposals lower than these three options, it would have to reconvene for further discussions today.

Komkrit Tantravanich, secretary-general of the Energy Regulatory Commission, stated that the ERC approved the calculation of the estimated automatic tariff adjustment (FTA) for the quarter of January to April. Continued …

AIS-3BB internet merger approved

The board of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) voted on Friday evening to approve the takeover of the broadband internet service provider Triple T Broadband (TTTBB) by Advanced Info Service (AIS).

After the acquisition is completed, AIS would become the biggest player in the fixed broadband market with 4.69 million users, exceeding the 3.8 million of the current market leader True. State-owned National Telecom is the only other major provider. Continued … 

Thundershowers forecast for most parts of Thailand

Isolated thundershowers are forecast for the lower northeast, the east, the lower central and south regions of Thailand today, while isolated heavy rains are likely in the south.

The Thailand Meteorological Department said these conditions were brought by the moderate high-pressure system over upper Vietnam and the South China Sea, which is expected to reach the upper northeast of Thailand today, as well as the easterly winds prevailing over the east, the lower central and the south. Air Pollution Soars Across Most Of Bangkok

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said yesterday satellite data appearing on its “Dust Check” application showed that dangerous particles in the air known as PM 2.5 had soared in 48 of 50 Bangkok districts and exceeded the red code, which is 90 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in 34 of them.

According to Thailand’s color-coded air-pollution-warning system, green means moderate or no risk at all; yellow means the air is unhealthy for those suffering from respiratory illnesses, with children and the elderly urged to limit time spent outdoors; orange means it’s unhealthy for all; and red means hazardous. A warning has been issued to fans of barbeque and tabletop grilled pork to limit their consumption to no more than once a month. Additionally, they are advised to always consume organic vegetables.

This caution comes from Associate Professor Dr. Surat Tanprawate, a neurologist, who posted the warning on his page, Brain with Dr Surat, on Friday. Massive Seizure of E-cigarettes in Ayutthaya

Thai Anti-Trafficking In Persons (ATP) officers confiscated E-cigarettes, E-liquids, and other equipment, a total of 60,500 units worth over 10 million Baht, at a private distribution center in Bang Pa-in, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.

A young man was taken aback when he was charged 300 baht for a plate of stir-fried noodles at a restaurant in Don Mueang. The restaurant justified the cost by stating they used three packets of instant noodles, each costing 12 baht.

The customer questioned the hefty price, insisting that each packet of noodles cost only 5 baht. The restaurant replied, stating that each packet costs them 12 baht. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced his government’s intention to promote Thailand as a global festival destination, in the hopes of boosting tourism across the country and attracting more foreign tourists over the New Year period.

Srettha announced that Thailand will host two major events, namely the “Thailand Winter Festival”, which consists of 3,000 festivals and local events across the country, and the “Colorful Bangkok Winter Festival 2023”, which includes 200 festivals and events in the capital. Van Overturns In Chiang Mai, Killing 2 Foreigners, Injuring 10

Yesterday, a tourist van traveling from Chiang Mai to Pai overturned on the Chiang Mai-Pai route, Mae Taeng District, Chiang Mai. Rescue teams rushed to the scene, where they found two foreign tourists dead outside the vehicle.

The Ministry of Public Health has set up an Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to deal with seasonal haze pollution, which is expected to become severe during the coming dry season.

Alcohol Sales Will Be Allowed During Extended Entertainment Hours

Anutin Charnvirakul, the deputy prime minister, clarified about the extension of opening service hours of entertainment districts to 4am in four pilot provinces.

Anutin apologized for misleading information from the previous statement that the extended-hour services will not cover alcohol sales until 4 am, which is incorrect. He meant to mention service establishments that are similar to entertainment venues that could provide alcoholic beverages until midnight, such as late-night restaurants, karaoke, and similar businesses. New PM2.5 standard will alarm public

PM2.5 has become a major environmental and health problem in Southeast Asia. To deal with the issue, members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) have put in place PM2.5 standards to measure air quality. These countries usually use the World Health Organization’s guidelines on PM2.5.

Under the WHO’s guidelines, the average annual concentration of PM2.5 particles should not exceed 5 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3), while over a 24-hour period, the concentration should not exceed 15µg/m3. Continued …

Farmers must stop the fires

Last week, the National Environment Board (NEB) approved an environment policy that, if implemented, can tackle PM2.5 at a fundamental level.

The good agricultural practice “GAP PM 2.5” proposes creating farming zones to prevent farmers from conducting “open burning” during harvest time. It is one of the two chief causes, along with forest fires, of PM2.5 pollution, especially in rural areas. Continued … 

Cabinet okays excise tax cuts on all gasohol fuel

Gasohol 91 and 95 will become 1 baht cheaper as of Nov. 7 for three months, according to a Cabinet resolution.

Energy Minister Peeraphan Salirathaviphak said on Tuesday that excise tax for all types of gasohol (petrol combined with ethanol) will be reduced by 1 baht a liter. However, gasohol 91 will take a 2.50 baht cut, as it gets an additional 1.50 baht subsidy from the Oil Fuel Fund, Peeraphan said. – The Nation

Two killed, two injured in violent brawl over a woman

A violent brawl over a woman led to the deaths of two individuals and the injuries of two others in Prachinburi province. The violent brawl incident took place in front of a residential building where the victims were drinking alcohol. The police were able to apprehend one suspect at midnight today.

Baby Deer Found Living Among Street Dogs Rescued by WFFT

When locals in a village in Thailand spotted a baby animal running around and barking near packs of street dogs, they immediately realized something was wrong. Despite the baby’s dog-like cries, he definitely wasn’t a dog — he was a muntjac deer who had wandered away from a nearby forest and was now all alone.

As soon as the villagers realized what was happening, they contacted Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) for help. The baby deer, later named Cha Lao, was only a few days old and clearly needed help. He was being chased by street dogs and would bark to try and keep them away. Continued …

Bangkok was listed among the world’s top 10 most polluted cities on Friday as levels of harmful PM2.5 dust soared to 48 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3). IQAir, a website that collects air quality data worldwide, ranked the Thai capital 10th in its global pollution list as of 7am on Friday.

The Thai government has embarked on an ambitious plan to replace aging government vehicles with electric vehicles (EVs), in line with its carbon neutrality goal set for 2050. Pattaya riding elephant rescued, finds new home at WFFT

Elderly elephant Nam Chok spent decades being used to give rides to tourists at an elephant trekking camp in Pattaya. Now in her sixties, her owner agreed to send her to a sanctuary for her retirement.

The partially blind elephant is suspected to have been caught from the wild, and has been in captivity for decades ever since. She has recently been working at a trekking camp in Pattaya, where elephants are used to entertain and give rides to paying tourists. Continued …

Burmese man shot dead by Thai police in Kui Buri after knife attack

A tragic incident unfolded yesterday in the Kui Buri district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province when a 30-year-old Burmese man was shot dead by local police. The man, reportedly suffering from a mental breakdown, had threatened villagers with a knife, leading to a police intervention that resulted in his death.

Bangkok air pollution back to hazardous as PM2.5 season gets underway

Air pollution in Bangkok rose to the “orange” level (starting to affect health) on Tuesday, signalling the start of the so-called PM2.5 season.

Levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 24.3 to 49.8 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³) across the city, according to the Pollution Control Department (PCD). The UN secretary-general has expressed his condolences over the loss of Thai lives in Israel, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Wednesday, as the Israeli government confirmed the death of another Thai, raising fatalities to 30.

A senior official of the southern office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday called on the government to make a decision on what should be done with an aquarium in Songkhla province left unfinished for 14 years after spending 1.4 billion baht.

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.
