Red alert issued in Nong Khai as Mekong River breaches embankment

Nong Khai’s municipal administration issued a red alert on Sunday morning to warn residents in the area to brace for flooding, as the swollen Mekong River has breached a sandbag embankment, causing water to flood a temple community.

Rotary Club 14th Amateur Charity Golf Nov 29

The Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin will hold its 14th Amateur Charity Golf Classic Friday, Nov. 29 at the Pineapple Valley Golf Club – formerly known as Banyan Golf Club.

The Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin has been helping local and regional causes since the club was founded in 2010 and has raised millions of Thai baht to improve the quality of life for underprivileged communities in Thailand, as well as education projects in other developing countries.

The group’s flagship project is the Children’s Water Safety & Drowning Prevention program that has been running for the last three years, and has taught over 600 children from 10 schools in Hua Hin not only to swim, but also to recognize the dangers of water and how to rescue others who may need life-saving assistance. Another key project was the purchase of a much-needed ambulance for Hua Hin Hospital costing 2.5 million Thai baht.

Elderly Man Killed in Encounter with Wild Elephant in Kanchanaburi

In a tragic incident yesteday, a 71-year-old man lost his life after a sudden encounter with a wild elephant while riding his motorcycle in Kanchanaburi. The incident occurred on Highway 3199, in the Sri Sawat District.

Phaitoon Intraboot, head of the Salak Phra Wildlife Sanctuary, reported that the incident took place in the early morning. Local residents alerted wildlife officials stationed at the Mae Lamun Protection Unit that a villager had been severely injured by a wild elephant. State hospitals ‘facing financial troubles’

A top Public Health Ministry official has admitted that state-owned hospitals nationwide are facing financial problems, and cooperation is urgently needed from their directors to help fix the issue.

Heavy rain and potential flash floods have been forecast across Thailand until Tuesday, Sept. 17, warns the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). The announcement cautioned that several regions would experience increased rainfall and strong winds in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand.

Northern Mekong River provinces battling the most severe flooding in 40–50 years

Northern Thailand is on high alert after heavy flooding mid-week hit Chiang Rai province, particularly the Mae Sai district. However, as water recedes there after closing Chiang Rai Airport, the Mekong River will continue to rise from Friday until next Tuesday.

For instance, elevated water levels were measured as rising 1.23 meters in Nong Khai on Thursday as rescue services and officials prepare for the threatened overflow of the river. This is due to 2-3 times the normal rainfall in the region over the last few days, caused by an acute depression. 36,000+ families in north, central Thailand still flooded in

As many as 36,199 households in 24 districts of seven provinces in the north and central regions are still overwhelmed by heavy flooding, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said. In its last update on Thursday, the department said 545 villages in 24 districts in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Ang Thong and Ayutthaya were still inundated.

From Aug. 16, a total of 106,467 families in 2,975 villages in 125 districts in 27 provinces were affected by floods, the department said. Since then, some 33 people have died from drowning or landslides, and 24 have sustained injuries. Continued …

Famous Tham Luang cave faces worst flooding in 13 years

Mae Sai district’s most famous cave, Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non, is currently facing its worst flooding in 13 years, after the mountain range was lashed by torrential rain, measured at 263mm yesterday alone.

British cave explorer Vernon Unsworth, who has been living in Mae Sai district with his Thai wife for more than a decade, inspected the cave and said that the water rushing out of the cave’s entrance is stronger than a waterfall, indicating that all the chambers in the cave are now flooded. Massive amounts of support reaches flood victims in Chiang Rai

Manpower, equipment and relief supplies from various sources have been arriving in Chiang Rai province to help flood victims, many of whom remain stranded in their homes by the worst flooding for three decades.

Runoff water from a mountain range in Myanmar’ Shan state and from watershed areas is yet to reach the Sai and Ruak rivers. Satellite images, provided by the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), show 767 hectares on the Myanmar border under water, while nearly a thousand hectares in Mae Sai district are flooded. Thailand is seeing increasing cases of diseases caused by flooding, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) said on Wednesday, urging the public to avoid wading through floodwater and mud.

New expat tax regime may link visas and tax returns

The Revenue Department is preparing draft legislation to further its global tax initiative, including plans to tax all foreign residents on their worldwide income, irrespective of whether the money is remitted to Thailand. However, for most expats and those considering Thailand as a place to live, the discussion is only just beginning.

In the meantime, the key consideration is that for those who stay over 180 days in Thailand this year, a tax return is due by March 31, 2025. Certainly, at the very least, foreigners should have obtained and studied their country’s tax treaty with Thailand. Afterward, how the Revenue Department moves to impose its new powers remains to be seen. For instance, it may choose to link tax reporting with the issuance of long-term visas very shortly. Why is Thai healthcare so good?

Thai healthcare is among the most effective in the world. The average Thai can expect to live to 80, much longer than their regional counterpart (the Southeast Asian figure is 73) and even slightly longer than the average American and European (each roughly 79), according to the latest data from the United Nations.

Last year, a whopping 99.5% of the population of 72million was covered by health insurance. Remarkably, Thailand has achieved this as a developing country: its income per person was roughly $7,000 in 2023, more than 11 times smaller than America’s. Low measles vaccination in 3 southern border provinces causes 5 deaths

The Disease Control Department plans to rush measle vaccines to young school kids in the three southern border provinces after the disease outbreak killed five people there last month, the department chief said.

Director-general Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn said on Saturday that measles and German measles were communicable diseases of concern in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces because of the low vaccination rate in the Muslim-dominated southern border provinces. Continued …

11 central Thai provinces face floods amid typhoon fallout

The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) warned 11 provinces in the central region about the increasing water discharge rate from the Chao Phraya Dam, a move that aims to mitigate the effects of super typhoon Yagi.

Bangkok hospital director promises ‘gas chambers’ for defiant smokers

The director of Mongkutwattana Hospital in Bangkok has vowed to lock defiant smokers on his premises in “gas chambers” until they inhale 100% of their cigarette smoke.

Fisherman survives four days at sea off Satun

A fisherman miraculously survived after floating in the sea off Satun in southern Thailand for four days. Despite exhausting his strength, he managed to stay alive by drinking from a floating bottle of sugarcane juice. His ordeal concluded when waves carried him to Bulon Mai Phai Island.

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn insists on increasing the daily wage to 400 baht nationwide on Oct. 1 despite concerns that the rise will harm businesses.

Gold price falls as baht strengthens

The domestic gold price has dipped by 2,000 baht per baht weight in just over a month, as the Thai currency appreciated by more than 7% during the period, with the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) noting prices may continue to decline if the value of the baht appreciates.

The Revenue Department aims to propose a draft act on additional tax to the Cabinet soon, which will cover global minimum tax (GMT) on multinational companies.

Hotel Prices Rise as Phuket Sees 42% Increase in Foreign Tourists H1 2024

Carlos Martinez, director of research and advisory at Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co., a Thai real estate advisory firm, commented on the overall tourism industry in Phuket for the first half of 2024, stating that the industry has recovered strongly with a total of 4.3 million tourists, which is only 7% below pre-COVID-19 levels.

Thai police probe Russian mafia link to tourist’s death on Phuket

A Russian tourist found dead in Phuket a few days ago was possibly the victim of a mafia hit, police suggested. The body of 27-year-old Ilia Orlov showed signs of torture and was left in the open in a popular tourist area near Karon Beach.

Which EV markets and models have performed strongest so far in 2024?

In terms of new electric vehicle (EV) volumes, no market was able to pull ahead of China. In the first six months of 2024, the country recorded nearly 4.3 million plug-in deliveries. This meant that battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) made up 43% of the market. BEVs alone made up 25% of sales in this period.

With 41,000 EV registrations, Thailand’s plug-in market recorded growth of 5% in the first half of 2024. Private sector fears worse flooding in September and October

The Thai private sector is expressing concern that the flooding seen in August, which has already caused damage estimated at about 8 billion baht, may get worse this month and into October, due to tropical storms which could hit Thailand, said Payong Srivanich, president of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking.

Compromised servers in Thailand cause nearly 200k malicious incidents in Q2

In a recent report, internet security firm Kaspersky observed a huge increase in malicious incidents caused by servers hosted in Thailand. In the second quarter of 2024 (April-June), Kaspersky detected 196,078 incidents, which is 203.5% higher than the same period last year, when Kaspersky logged 64,609 incidents.

Inflation up slightly in August, below forecast

Thailand’s annual headline inflation rate slowed in August, as food prices rose and energy prices fell, the Commerce Ministry said today, and remained below the Bank of Thailand’s (BoT) target range of 1% to 3%.

Thailand to move ahead with casinos plan, official says

The government will move ahead with plans for a mega entertainment complex that would house casinos in Thailand, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said today. A public hearing has concluded and 80% of those who attended agreed with the plan, Julapun said.

Minister admits digital wallet plan needs adjustment

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat has conceded that the government’s 10,000-baht handout program needs some adjustment, including giving cash instead of digital money to some recipients.

Heavy rain is forecast across nearly all of Thailand, with 42 provinces, including Bangkok and its surrounding areas, expected to face severe weather. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of flash floods, overflowing waterways, and high sea waves over 3 meters.

Thunderstorms are expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Surat Thani provinces. The minimum temperature will be 23 to 25°C, and the maximum temperature will be 30 to 35°C. Severe PM 2.5 pollution is having a dire effect on the environment and way of life in northern Thailand, forcing many businesses to close and leading to increased health problems. Swiss man in Phuket acquitted of assaulting doctor

Due to a lack of evidence, the Phuket Provincial Court acquitted a Swiss man who had been charged with assaulting a female Thai doctor when she had allegedly trespassed on his property.

The incident occurred on Feb. 24 at a pool villa housing project on Yamu Beach in Phuket. The Swiss occupant of the house, identified as David, was accused of kicking the back of Dr. Tharndao after finding her sitting on the steps leading up to his compound. Train Runs Over Man in Phatthalung

In a horrifying incident, a 32-year-old man was killed after being struck by a train in Phatthalung province. The man’s wife was left in shock after discovering that her husband’s body was found decapitated near the tracks.

VAT rules changed for online sellers in Thailand

The Revenue Department is amending the law to require foreign online platforms to register as vendors in the value-added tax (VAT) system. There are five measures in total, one of which improves regulations to align with future commerce, particularly online trade.

Chinese imports putting four major Thai industries at risk

With just two months to go until the U.S. presidential election, an analyst is warning that no matter who wins, the trade war between the U.S. and China is certain to continue. However, if Donald Trump comes out on top, the impact on Thailand will be more severe, says Phiphat Luangnaruemitchai, chief economist at KKP Research, Kiatnakin Phatra Securities (KKP).

Cabinet approves 5 measures to curb ultra-cheap imports

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved five measures made up of 63 operational plans to tackle the influx of ultra-cheap and often substandard products that have been flooding Thai markets, Suksit Srichomkwan, the prime ninister’s deputy secretary-general for political affairs, said.

A local discovered the body of a Russian man in a ditch near Karon Beach in Phuket yesterday afternoon. A fatal attack is suspected as the man had wounds all over his body.

Thailand has netted more than 1.3 million kilograms of highly destructive blackchin tilapia fish, the government said Tuesday, as it battles to stamp out the invasive species.

All Three Workers Found Dead in Tunnel Collapse

In a conclusion to a 126-hour rescue operation, three workers trapped inside a collapsed railway tunnel have been found dead. Rescue teams encountered numerous challenges in their efforts to recover the bodies and are now preparing to remove them from the site.

Soil Indicators not Working During Phuket Landslide

The Department of Mineral Resources has confirmed soil indicators used in Phuket to detect possible landslides are not working due to a lack of budget and maintenance. The Geohazard Operation Center, part of the Department of Mineral Resources, said the soil indicator on Nark Kerd Mountain was not operational prior to the landslide incident. The reason for this was a lack of budget for maintenance.

Additionally, the soil indicator had been installed near a tree in the parking area close to the landslide’s starting point. In Thailand, under the 120-day crackdown plan on illegal workers, the Ministry of Labor and Thai authorities have been conducting nationwide arrests, resulting in the apprehension of 155,669 Myanmar workers between June 5 and Aug. 22.

Thai women’s business success belies broader gender inequality

Women in Thailand are active in the business sphere. Thai businesses have one of the highest ratios of women CEOs in the world, with 32% of senior leadership positions in Thailand held by women, compared to the global average of 27%. Almost 90% of businesses in Thailand have at least one woman in senior management.

But this does not mean that gender equality in Thailand has been achieved. Thailand ranks around 74th in the world on the Gender Inequality Index, which is only the fourth highest in Southeast Asia, after Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei. Continued …

BOI Secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said an authorized subcommittee of the BOI approved the request of Western Digital for privileges for its further investment in hard disk drives and peripherals manufacturing in Bang Pa-in Industrial Estate in Ayutthaya and 304 Industrial Park in Prachin Buri. (Editor: As someone who has “interacted” closely with elephants at one of Elephant Nature Park’s satellite locations outside Chiang Mai, we strongly disagree with this being detrimental to the elephants – depending on the sanctuary. The elephants we visited had free roam of the jungle and grasslands in their particular location. They were not penned up and, importantly, they were not ridden. If the older elephants had been mistreated years before, they weren’t now, and the young elephant we met was just a rowdy 3-year-old, with seemingly no cares in the world. Landslide Buries Workers Inside High-Speed Rail Tunnel Construction

Yesterday, a landslide buried three vehicles and trapped workers inside a tunnel being constructed for the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project in Chanut subdistrict, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima. The incident occurred while workers were excavating the tunnel, located between 600 meters and 2 Km deep into the tunnel.

Wthe workers have been found alive and rescue teams are working tirelessly to retrieve them from 6 metres beneath the debris. According to witnesses, workers were operating backhoes and loaders when the mountainside suddenly gave way, causing a massive landslide that engulfed three vehicles, including a supervisor’s car. Investment continues to contract

Investment, a key driver of Thailand’s economy, contracted in Q2 for the third consecutive quarter, decreasing by 6.2%. The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) reported a 6.8% decline in private investment, mainly due to an 8.1% drop in machinery and equipment investment, a 22.5% decrease in vehicle investment, and a slowdown in capital goods imports.
