Pattaya riding elephant rescued, finds new home at WFFT

Elderly elephant Nam Chok spent decades being used to give rides to tourists at an elephant trekking camp in Pattaya. Now in her sixties, her owner agreed to send her to a sanctuary for her retirement.

The partially blind elephant is suspected to have been caught from the wild, and has been in captivity for decades ever since. She has recently been working at a trekking camp in Pattaya, where elephants are used to entertain and give rides to paying tourists. Continued …

Burmese man shot dead by Thai police in Kui Buri after knife attack

A tragic incident unfolded yesterday in the Kui Buri district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province when a 30-year-old Burmese man was shot dead by local police. The man, reportedly suffering from a mental breakdown, had threatened villagers with a knife, leading to a police intervention that resulted in his death.

Upon receiving the report of Ao Ko’s erratic behavior, officers from the Kui Buri Police Station, led by Deputy Inspector Vattanachai Kirinil, rushed to the scene. They found Ao Ko outside a row of nine rental rooms, brandishing a knife in each hand. Continued …

Bangkok air pollution back to hazardous as PM2.5 season gets underway

Air pollution in Bangkok rose to the “orange” level (starting to affect health) on Tuesday, signalling the start of the so-called PM2.5 season.

Levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 24.3 to 49.8 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m³) across the city, according to the Pollution Control Department (PCD). The PCD reduced the threshold at which PM2.5 levels are considered unsafe from 50 to 37.5μg/m³ in June. Continued …

The UN secretary-general has expressed his condolences over the loss of Thai lives in Israel, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Wednesday, as the Israeli government confirmed the death of another Thai, raising fatalities to 30.

Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

Two Thai elephants born through artificial insemination

Among the more than 4,000 elephants in Thailand, two hold a special honor: both were born using artificial insemination in a bid to protect the species and maintain the country’s biodiversity.

According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation as of March 9 this year, between 4,013 and 4,422 elephants lived in 91 national parks, wildlife sanctuaries and non-hunting areas across Thailand. New electricity tariff approved, reducing power bills to end of year

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) has approved a new electricity tariff of 3.99 baht per kilowatt-hour, a reduction aimed at decreasing power bills for households and businesses for the remaining four months of this year.

In its initial meeting on Sept.13, the cabinet agreed to lower the electricity tariff from 4.45 baht to 4.10 baht per unit. However, in a subsequent meeting on Sept. 18, it resolved to further reduce the rate to 3.99 baht per unit. Continued …

The remains of a Bryde’s whale was towed by trawler to Cha Am beach, near a fishing pier in Phetchaburi province yesterday, after it was found floating at sea, about five kilometers from the shore.

The 14-year-old shooter who killed two people and injured five others at a Bangkok luxury mall on Tuesday used a modified “blank gun” that could fire real bullets, it has been revealed.

Blank guns, or blank firing guns, refer to imitation firearms (mostly pistols) that can be loaded with blank bullets and are often used as starting pistols in sports competitions or on movie sets. Commerce Ministry revises inflation forecast amid falling prices

Revising its earlier forecast, the Commerce Ministry now anticipates headline inflation to be within 1%-1.7% for the current year, with an average of 1.35%. This comes as a result of expected lowered inflation in the last quarter.

A security screening officer at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Samut Prakan province has been suspended after failing to check inside a suspicious piece of luggage, which turned out to contain live animals, the airport said in a statement issued on Thursday.

Hua Hin municipality outlines plans for future development

Hua Hin municipality commemorated its 86th anniversary with a merit-making ceremony on Monday. Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul led the ceremony, which was overseen by Phra Kru Wichitthamvibhat, the chief of Hua Hin District and the abbot of Wat Busayabunpot.

Two fitness centers open in Hin Lek Fai

On Saturday, Hua Hin welcomed two new fitness centers – Elite Fight Club Hua Hin and CrossFit Hua Hin.

More details on Thai taxation of overseas income

The Thai Revenue Department has explained more about the taxation of income overseas, which will affect both some foreigners and some Thai people.

The basic idea is, that when money is transferred into Thailand it should be taxed in Thailand if it is income. If the income has been received in another country and later within the same tax year is being transferred to the taxpayer’s account in Thailand, it must be taxed in Thailand. If Thailand has a double tax agreement with the country where the money comes from, the tax paid in that foreign country can be deducted in Thailand according to the rules in the double tax agreement. Two dead, five wounded in Siam Paragon shooting, suspect used modified BB gun

A Chinese tourist and a woman from Myanmar were killed at Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, by a teenager using a modified BB gun, according to Police Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. Some media reported a third death.

PM Puts Weapon Systems Procurement On Hold

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday suspended the procurement of any weapon systems during fiscal 2024, so that, he said, the government’s annual budget could be spent for optimum use.

13 Electric Poles Collapse During Installation, 12 Injuries, 2 Deaths

On Monday, Police Capt. Thongkham Phoyai, Saraburi Province, received a report that 13 14-meter-tall concrete poles with high voltage wires fell down during installation at the Ban Krua subdistrict, Ban Mo District. A rescue squad was urgently dispatched to aid the injured and send them to nearby hospitals.

A security camera caught a foreign couple stealing two motorcycle helmets from a post office welfare house in the northern province of Chiang Mai in a bid to avoid being fined at a police checkpoint.

Giant python crashes lunchtime in Yala

A giant python, almost 5 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms, caused a stir yesterday when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala. The reptile was discovered by the shop owner, Suhayna Beeing, who immediately alerted residents of the Gunung Janoang community, sparking panic and attracting a crowd of onlookers.

Suhayna noticed the giant python hiding under a pile of goods in his shop. The shop owner’s call for help was answered by Kanob, a local farmer and president of the local charity foundation. Weakening baht boosts Thailand’s exports and tourism

Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, pointed out yesterday that the weakening baht, despite its potential negative impact on energy import costs, is actually proving to be a boon for the country’s exports and tourism. The baht had earlier plummeted to an 11-month low against the U.S. dollar, trading at 37.095.

Understanding Thailand’s New Tax Directive on Foreign Income

The Revenue Department of Thailand recently issued Directive No. 161/2566, dated Sept. 15, stipulating that individuals with foreign-sourced income must include it in their tax calculations for the year they repatriate the income to Thailand. The directive takes effect from Jan. 1, 2024.

The directive is grounded in Section 41 Paragraph 2 of Thailand’s Revenue Code, which establishes the principle that tax obligations are determined by one’s residence in Thailand. UTCC cuts estimate of economic growth to 3%

Several economic factors are signaling a less-optimistic outlook for the Thai economy, leading to a revised growth forecast for 2023, Thanawat Polvichai, rector of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC), said this week.

Thanawat, who also serves as chief adviser to the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, said that the UTCC has now revised Thailand’s economic growth rate for this year to 3% from the initial 3.6%. Labor minister vows to raise daily minimum wage by year-end

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced on Thursday that the raising of the minimum wage would be a New Year’s gift for the labor sector, but could not confirm whether the increase would bring it up to 400 baht per day.

Formal discussions with the tripartite committee, composed of employers, employees, and government representatives, would first be necessary, he said, adding that the decision would be based on inflation rates, minimum wages in each province, varying wages in different industries, and the country’s inflation rate. Asian currencies experienced a dip today, with the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah bearing the brunt of the losses. This was mainly due to the rising strength of the U.S. dollar, bolstered by robust economic indicators and the threat of inflation from the Federal Reserve, which have pushed U.S. bond yields to a 16-year peak.

The amount of usable water across 27 medium-sized reservoirs across the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima has dropped to alarmingly low levels despite the rainy season, raising fears of an impending drought, according to a provincial irrigation office official.

The Thai baht has plummeted to its lowest level against the USD since November last year, driven by concerns of “stagflation in countries that heavily rely on energy imports. That includes Thailand.

Gold prices in Thailand saw a significant surge as per the Gold Traders Assn. Compared to the closing price of the previous day, gold ornaments Tuesday were sold at an increased rate of 33,100 baht (US$926) per baht weight, marking an upswing of 100 baht.

Duck egg prices rise as rain dampens Khon Kaen production

Continual rainfall in Khon Kaen has led to a decrease in duck egg production, driving the cost of duck eggs to an unprecedented high of 170 baht per tray. Salted eggs have also seen a price increase, now costing 8 to 10 baht per egg.
