WFFT rescues 15 big cats from northern Thailand facility

Twelve tigers and three leopards who have spent their lives in captivity have been rescued from a tiger farm in Thailand.

The undisclosed captive tiger facility in northern Thailand was visited by government officials on Dec. 16 following legal action over alleged illegal wildlife trading. Veterinary teams and wildlife experts from Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) were on hand to rescue the seized animals, in the first part of the largest tiger rescue operation by an NGO in Thailand’s history. Rainmaking efforts that were carried out east of Bangkok have led to a dramatic drop in pollution across the capital and its surrounding areas, with levels of harmful, ultra-fine pollutants in the atmosphere reported to have dropped back below the safe threshold yesterday.

More than 50% of Thai workforce are ‘informal’ workers

The National Statistical Office of Thailand (NSO) is urging the government to further promote basic rights, social security and labor protection for workers in the informal sector, citing 2023 statistics that show that more than half of Thailand’s workforce (52.3%), or some 21 million people, are informal workers.

Informal workers are those who lack employee status as defined under the Labor Protection Act (LPA). Typically they do not work at an employer’s premises nor do they have official employment contracts; they either work at home, are self-employed or temporary staffers. Continued …

Thai government plans 50-year concession for land bridge megaproject

The Thai government is contemplating a 50-year concession for the successful bidder of the land bridge megaproject, a venture worth one trillion baht and projected to break even within 24 years. This was revealed by Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit during the Thailand Landbridge Roadshow event in Tokyo, Japan, where he and Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin sought to attract Japanese investors.

Thai income tax worries spark interest in 10-year visa

Concerns about Thailand’s intention to tax foreign income from January 2024 has created a new market for Thailand’s long-term resident (LTR) visa. That’s because those who obtain the 10-year LTR are exempted from paying personal income tax on foreign assets or earnings. The new rules apply to all native and foreign residents of Thailand who spend six months or more here in a year.

The Board of Investment, which controls the LTR, says about 3,000 such visas were issued since the launch in 2022, but the publicity surrounding the new tax regulation has seen a 14% rise in applications. Continued …

Most Thais are worried about the impact of PM2.5 air pollution, an opinion poll conducted by Suan Dusit University found.

Uptick in COVID-19 infections is seasonal, will drop in February

The current increase in COVID-19 infections is seasonal, like other respiratory diseases, and will continue until the end of January, returning to normal between February and May, according to Dr. Yong Poovorawan, head of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine of Chulalongkorn University.

Telco regulator asked to review True’s service charges and quality

Four members of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), Thailand’s broadcast and telecom regulator, have proposed that the commission consider the service charges and quality of True Corp. after the successful merger of Total Access Communications Co. (DTAC) and True Corp. (TRUE) in March this year.

The commissioners say that they have received complaints from many subscribers that the quality of the mobile phone and internet services of True have dropped, while the service charges have increased through changes to service packages. Continued …

The Energy Business Department will seek Cabinet endorsement for discontinuing the sale of B10 diesel oil, leaving only B7 and B20 oil options available, the department’s chief said.

Thai economy poised for growth in 2024, fueled by tourism and exports

Most respondents to a recent opinion poll want one minimum wage rate to be applied across the country, instead of several rates, and that the Bt2-16 wage increase proposed by the Wage Committee is too low, according to the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA).

A recent report from the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) revealed that efforts to address poverty and inequality in Thailand have not been entirely successful. Despite an overall reduction in inequality, some provinces are still grappling with persistent poverty issues, it found.

NESDC, in collaboration with the World Bank, recently hosted a meeting titled “Bridging the Gap: Thailand’s Path to Inclusive Prosperity”. Foreigners Purchase 10,703 Condo Units in Thailand This Year

Vichai Wiratkapan, acting director of the Real Estate Information Center (REIC), said that in the third quarter of 2023 the number of condominiums in Thailand transferred to foreigners was 3,365, an increase of 0.4%.

Hazardous smog moves to north, west

The levels of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns, known as PM2.5, reached dangerous levels in parts of the north and the western region this morning, while Samut Songkhram was the only province in the red zone, indicating PM2.5 readings exceeded the acceptable standard of 50 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported at 9am today that the central province of Samut Songkhram, located west of Bangkok, recorded 77.1 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Continued …

NEPC plans to cap power tariff for Thai households at current rate

The National Energy Policy Council (NEPC), in its recent meeting, moved to limit the power tariff for households consuming not more than 300 units a month at the existing rate of 3.99 baht per unit, an insider familiar with the meeting discussions revealed.

In the NEPC meeting, led by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, two main points were reviewed, both related to the proposed tariff of 4.68 baht per unit for the period of January to April of the upcoming year. Increases to the daily minimum wage are unlikely to have a substantial effect on the domestic prices of goods and services, insisted the Commerce Ministry’s planning unit.

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), said the analysis conducted by the office on the impact of the minimum wage adjustment by the tripartite wage committee on inflation showed an average daily minimum wage increase of 2.37% to 345 baht would lead to a modest uptick in inflation, about 0.13–0.25%. Gold prices in Thailand have plummeted drastically following a continuous surge, according to the Gold Traders Assn. The price of gold ornaments fell by 250 baht compared to the last price Monday, selling at 34,450 baht per baht-weight.

The buying price of gold bars in the country stands at 33,850 baht per baht-weight and the selling price is 33,950 baht per baht-weight, according to the sixth announcement of the day. Meanwhile, the purchase price for 96.5% gold ornaments is 33,245.88 baht per baht-weight, selling at 34,450 baht per baht-weight. Wild elephant herd of 100 ‘tramples’ sugarcane dreams in Prachin Buri

Over 100 wild elephants caused chaos and distress to villagers in Khao Maikaew, Kabin Buri in Prachin Buri province, after rampaging through a sugarcane plantation, forcing officials from the Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary to push the elephants back.

Thailand’s weekly Covid-19 cases surge over 500, with three fatalities

The Department of Disease Control in Thailand (DDC) reported a sudden surge in weekly Covid-19 cases, with over 500 new patients and three fatalities. The DDC revealed 88 cases of pneumonia among Covid patients. The report, which covers the period from Nov. 26 to Dec. 2, confirms an average of 76 hospital admissions and one death per day.

The cabinet on Monday approved a tax refund scheme for shopping to stimulate domestic spending early next year and promote wider use of electronic invoices, according to the Finance Ministry.

Electricity and fuel prices are expected to increase next year

Consumers are advised to brace for increases in the prices of electricity and fuel next year, even though the government will try its best to minimize the rises.

After the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed an increase in the price of electricity, from 3.99 baht to 4.68 baht/unit for January-April, the Ministry of Energy is to hold consultations with the ERC on how to trim the fuel tariff (FT), averaging 89.55 satang/unit, to limit the proposed increase, which is considered by the government to be too large. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin rejected the electricity tariff hike approved by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Saturday, explaining that he was worried the increase would be too burdensome for consumers. Informal debtors owing Bt1.5 billion flood govt mediation service

Over 37,000 people owing a combined 1.5 billion baht applied for the government’s informal-debt resolution program in its first two days, the Interior Ministry said on Sunday.

Permanent Secretary Suttipong Juljarern revealed that 37,579 people had registered for debt mediation as of Saturday at 4pm. Of these, 36,338 registered online, while 1,241 visited Debt Relief Assistance Centers set up around the country. Prachuap Khiri Khan records lowest English proficiency in Thailand

In the latest EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) reported yesterday, Thailand’s grasp of the English language has been categorized as “very low proficiency,” ranking 101st out of 113 non-native English-speaking countries.

Prachuap Khiri Khan recorded the lowest score of the Thai provinces included in the survey. With a score of just 299, Prachuap Khiri Khan’s proficiency level is markedly lower than other provinces, such as Chiang Mai, which top-scored with 464, followed by Bangkok (457), Phuket (456), and Songkhla (437). – HHT

Thai investigators crack down on Makro for shady swine supplies

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) raided Makro, a popular cash-and-carry store warehouse in Thailand after discovering the store ordered illegal pork products from a company previously indicted for illicit imports.

DSI Director Suriya Singhakamon said officers conducted a raid on Wealthy & Healthy Foods, which illegally imported pork into Thailand, and discovered that the company supplied some frozen pork and pork livers to a cash-and-carry store called Siam Makro. Continued …

Lantern blamed for burning Chiang Mai market

A fire broke out at nine buildings within Rim Ping Flower Market in the northern province of Chiang Mai at 3am yesterday. A witness claimed the blaze was triggered when a lantern from the Loy Krathong and Yi Peng Lantern Festival fell onto the buildings.

According to initial investigations, approximately 1,400 square meters were affected, including nine buildings in the market and some parts of nearby buildings. These include residential buildings, a Chinese shrine and the Thailand Post Museum. Continued …

Analysts have expressed doubts over the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s (TAT) ambitious target of attracting 8.2 million Chinese visitors next year. This comes as predictions for overall foreign arrivals next year have been down-scaled, amid concerns over a sluggish global economy.

Kasem Prunratanamala, who leads research at CGS-CIMB Securities in Thailand, stated that while the firm has kept its estimation of 27 million arrivals for this year, the prediction for next year has been reduced from 36 million to 32 million. If you look closely, you can just about see the characters and scenes that once stretched across the walls of Wat Prasat, a temple in Nonthaburi.
