Poll reveals youth expectations on Thai Children’s Day

Concert and music performance are the most popular Children’s Day activities, while top music artists are the individuals Thai youths are most interested to meet in person, according to a poll jointly conducted by the Ministry of Culture and Suan Dusit Poll. In Thailand, Children’s Day is observed on the second Saturday of January, which falls on Jan. 13 this year.

The Ministry of Culture, which is responsible for hosting Children’s Day activities nationwide, collaborated with Suan Dusit Poll to survey public opinion about Children’s Day this year. A total of 21,627 children nationwide — 58.6% males and 41.4% females — participated in the survey. Continued …

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are infections people can get from certain types of sexual activities. There are many such varieties of infections out there, with names like HIV, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, herpes viruses, human papillomavirus (HPV), and now monkeypox (more recently renamed as MPOX).

A series of reports have shown a concerning rise in STIs across the world, including in Thailand. Mortality from STIs is relatively rare in the modern world but the infections may contribute to significant morbidities. Electric mass transit pledge to zap pollution in Chiang Mai

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin pledged to foster the development of electric mass transit systems as a solution to the persistent air pollution issues plaguing the northern province. The Thai prime minister noted that the fine particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) levels had considerably decreased since his visit last year.

The main cause of the relentless smog is not fossil fuel-powered vehicles, it’s the burning of farm fields and waste. Bottled water contains more plastic particles than thought

A typical one-liter (33-ounce) bottle of water contains some 240,000 plastic fragments on average, according to a new study. Many of those fragments have historically gone undetected, the researchers determined, suggesting that health concerns linked to plastic pollution may be dramatically underestimated.

The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to evaluate bottled water for the presence of “nanoplastics” — plastic particles under 1 micrometer in length, or one-seventieth the width of a human hair. The findings show that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic particles than previously estimated, as earlier studies only accounted for microplastics, or pieces between 1 and 5,000 micrometers. 2024 is a year of the Wood Dragon, starting from Feb. 10 (Chinese New Year) and ending on Jan. 28, 2025 (Chinese New Year’s Eve).

The luckiest Chinese zodiac signs in 2024 are monkeys, roosters, and pigs. Then, with not quite so much luck, come oxes, rabbits, goats, and dogs. Dragons’ fortunes will be influenced by “opposition to Tai Sui”.

The dragon symbolizes power, nobleness, honor, luck, and success in traditional Chinese culture. The dragon is a supernatural being with no parallel for talent and excellence.

New Year holiday road death toll reaches 128

During the final three days of the year, the government recorded 1,150 traffic accidents that killed 128 people and injured 1,151 others across Thailand.

Announcing the statistics for Dec 29 to 31, Deputy National Police Chief Surachate Hakparn said on Monday that the most accidents (44) happened in Kanchanaburi. The western province also recorded the most injured people (43). Continued …

Social security fund faces bankruptcy in a decade

Thailand held groundbreaking elections on Christmas Eve for both employer and employee representatives in the administration of the country’s mammoth Social Security system and a fund valued at the end of 2022 at Bt2.36 trillion. Speedboat Crashes Into Rocks In Phuket, Killing Russian Girl

The Phuket Regional Harbor Office received a report of a marine accident at 3:30 pm on Dec. 31 from the Andaman Marine Traffic and Safety Control Center, stating that a speedboat carrying seven passengers, the captain and one crew member, totaling nine people, had crashed into the rocks on the shore of Mai Thon Island, Chalong subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket Province.

All of the individuals on the boat, aged 3 to 63, were injured, and two of them were critically injured: the boat driver and a 5-year-old Russian girl who lost consciousness. Sadly, she died later in the Chalong hospital. Continued …

Ministries to clamp down on crop burning as pollution levels rise

In a move to fight air pollution, the ministries of Natural Resources and Environment, and Agriculture and Cooperatives jointly declared war on crop burning, vowing to crack down on one of the main sources of PM2.5 fine dust.

PM2.5 is fine particulate matter that is 2.5 microns or less in diameter and can be inhaled, boosting the risk of health problems like heart disease and asthma. Continued … 

Rapid response plan to cut PM2.5 in the works

Some 11 urgent measures were unveiled by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment on Tuesday to address the PM2.5 smog problem, with a focus on quickly adjusting actions to ensure effective results.

Bus driver in fatal PKK cash was asleep at wheel

The driver of a bus that crashed in Prachuap Khiri Khan, killing 15 people, has confessed to falling asleep at the wheel, leading to a charge of reckless driving.

The accident, which occurred on Dec. 5, involved a tour bus enroute from Bangkok to Na Thawi, which veered off the road and collided with a large tree along Phetkasem Road in Thap Sakae near Wanakorn National Park. Thai wage committee upholds 2.37% minimum wage increase

Yesterday, a senior government official announced that the tripartite wage committee has decided to uphold their previously agreed-upon plan to increase the average daily minimum wage by 2.37%.

Time for dithering on tourist insurance to stop

The Thai cabinet on Tuesday finally shelved the long-running plan for a foreign tourism levy. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, however, rejected a stop-gap measure to replace it. He ordered the introduction of automatic insurance cover for all foreign tourists to be provided through the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

A passenger van with a Bangkok license plate collided with a rice-harvesting truck with a Phetchaburi license plate yesterday morning on Petchaburi Road (southbound) in Phetchaburi Province, seriously injuring two foreign tourists.

Cabinet caps diesel, electricity prices

The Cabinet has resolved to cap the price of diesel and electricity for households in a bid to ease people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

Srettha, who also doubles as finance minister, said under the measure proposed by the Energy Ministry, diesel will be retailed at no more than 30 baht per liter for three months, while the price of electricity for households using less than 300 units per month will be capped at no more than 4.2 baht per unit. WFFT rescues 15 big cats from northern Thailand facility

Twelve tigers and three leopards who have spent their lives in captivity have been rescued from a tiger farm in Thailand.

The undisclosed captive tiger facility in northern Thailand was visited by government officials on Dec. 16 following legal action over alleged illegal wildlife trading. Veterinary teams and wildlife experts from Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) were on hand to rescue the seized animals, in the first part of the largest tiger rescue operation by an NGO in Thailand’s history. Thai income tax worries spark interest in 10-year visa

Concerns about Thailand’s intention to tax foreign income from January 2024 has created a new market for Thailand’s long-term resident (LTR) visa. That’s because those who obtain the 10-year LTR are exempted from paying personal income tax on foreign assets or earnings. The new rules apply to all native and foreign residents of Thailand who spend six months or more here in a year.

The Board of Investment, which controls the LTR, says about 3,000 such visas were issued since the launch in 2022, but the publicity surrounding the new tax regulation has seen a 14% rise in applications. Continued …

Telco regulator asked to review True’s service charges and quality

Four members of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), Thailand’s broadcast and telecom regulator, have proposed that the commission consider the service charges and quality of True Corp. after the successful merger of Total Access Communications Co. (DTAC) and True Corp. (TRUE) in March this year.

Foreigners Purchase 10,703 Condo Units in Thailand This Year

Bangkok struggles with escalating PM2.5 levels

Bangkok is grappling with a severe rise in PM2.5 levels, necessitating immediate intervention from the government. Nearly 29 of the city’s 50 districts have recorded PM2.5 concentrations surpassing 35 micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3), making the air unfit for breathing.

The districts with the highest PM2.5 concentrations include Bangkok Yai (105.1μg/m3), Thonburi (104.8μg/m3), Nong Khaem (103.7μg/m3), Khlong San (100.6μg/m3), and Bang Kho Laem (99.5μg/m3), according to data from the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA). Continued …

Hazardous smog moves to north, west

The levels of particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns, known as PM2.5, reached dangerous levels in parts of the north and the western region this morning, while Samut Songkhram was the only province in the red zone, indicating PM2.5 readings exceeded the acceptable standard of 50 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) of air.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (Gistda) reported at 9am today that the central province of Samut Songkhram, located west of Bangkok, recorded 77.1 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Continued …

NEPC plans to cap power tariff for Thai households at current rate

The National Energy Policy Council (NEPC), in its recent meeting, moved to limit the power tariff for households consuming not more than 300 units a month at the existing rate of 3.99 baht per unit, an insider familiar with the meeting discussions revealed.

In the NEPC meeting, led by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, two main points were reviewed, both related to the proposed tariff of 4.68 baht per unit for the period of January to April of the upcoming year. This proposed rate, an increase of 17.3% from the current tariff, was sanctioned by the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Nov. 30. Continued …

Thailand has welcomed two new two-star and six additional one-star restaurants in the 2024 Michelin Guide Thailand edition, which consists of 447 food establishments: seven with two Michelin Stars, 28 with one Michelin star, 196 Bib Gourmand, and 216 Michelin Selected venues.

Fine Arts Dept wants speedy return of Thai artifacts from USA

The Thai government should expedite its efforts to retrieve Thai artifacts stolen from Si Thep historical park in Phetchabun province and currently held in the United States, said Phanombootra Chandrajoti, director general of the Fine Arts Department.

“A major challenge facing Thailand, after Si Thep historical park was recognized as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site in September, is to collaborate with the U.S. in reclaiming artifacts, stolen from Si Thep more than 60 years ago, from museums in the U.S.,” he said. Continued …

ADB cuts Thailand’s 2023 economic growth forecast to 2.5%

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has lowered its economic forecast for Thailand in 2023 from 3.5% growth to 2.5%, citing export contraction, reduced government spending, and lower investment from both the public and private sectors.

Wage hike unlikely to push up prices

Increases to the daily minimum wage are unlikely to have a substantial effect on the domestic prices of goods and services, insisted the Commerce Ministry’s planning unit.

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), said the analysis conducted by the office on the impact of the minimum wage adjustment by the tripartite wage committee on inflation showed an average daily minimum wage increase of 2.37% to 345 baht would lead to a modest uptick in inflation, about 0.13–0.25%.
