The Thai National Water Resources Office (ONWR) issued a nationwide water situation forecast yesterday. A moderate monsoon trough is expected to affect northern, northeastern, and central Thailand from Sept. 1-3, merging with a strong low-pressure system over the central South China Sea.

All Three Workers Found Dead in Tunnel Collapse

In a conclusion to a 126-hour rescue operation, three workers trapped inside a collapsed railway tunnel have been found dead. Rescue teams encountered numerous challenges in their efforts to recover the bodies and are now preparing to remove them from the site.

Ekarach Sriarayapong, head of the office of the governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), provided an update on the situation. The incident occurred on Aug. 24, when the tunnel collapsed due to a soil subsidence, trapping three workers inside. Soil Indicators not Working During Phuket Landslide

The Department of Mineral Resources has confirmed soil indicators used in Phuket to detect possible landslides are not working due to a lack of budget and maintenance. The Geohazard Operation Center, part of the Department of Mineral Resources, said the soil indicator on Nark Kerd Mountain was not operational prior to the landslide incident. The reason for this was a lack of budget for maintenance.

Additionally, the soil indicator had been installed near a tree in the parking area close to the landslide’s starting point. Bangkok Prepares for Rising Waters

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt has ensured the city’s readiness as floodwaters approach, focusing on key flood defense projects. Accompanied by Deputy Gov. Wisanu Supsompol and officials from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Drainage and Sewerage Department, Chadchart recently inspected vital flood levee repairs along the Chao Phraya River in Yannawa district. Attention centered on the Rama III area, where a new water gate at Klong Ta Huang is under construction.

During the visit, Chadchart and his team assessed the ongoing work on the new gate, which aims to enhance water management. The digital wallet handout may be distributed first to groups of people that most need it for spending to inject money into the economy toward the end of this year, says caretaker Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul.

Dr. Supavud Saicheua, chairman of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), gave a special interview in which he analyzed urgent issues of economic reform. Confidence still low among homebuyers

The housing purchase confidence index (HPCI) in Greater Bangkok improved slightly in the second quarter from the first quarter, thanks to property measures, but remained low because of persistent negative factors.

Thailand’s top industrial park developer expects more land sales

WHA Corp., Thailand’s largest industrial estate developer, expects rising demand from foreign manufacturers and companies to trigger a surge in land sales in the second half of the year.

The Bangkok-based company sees land sales jumping to 224 hectares between July and December, an increase of about 40% from the first half, Chief Financial Officer Natthapatt Tanboon-Ek said Wednesday. Walk on Hua Hin beach sparks ‘trash art’ effort

During the Covid-19 lockdown, Jarupatcha Achavasmit, a lecturer at the School of Architecture, Art, and Design at King Mongkut Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, spent her time in Hua Hin. While walking along the beaches, she noticed that the waves were washing up trash.

She assumed that it was the way the sea returned unwanted items to humans. She felt sorry for the sea and decided to help it by turning the trash it spat back at humans into art pieces. Continued …

Deluge expected with two storms on radar

Thailand is expected to face two storms from September to October, bringing heavy rainfall across various regions, according to the Meteorological Department. Thanasit Iam-ananchai, the department’s deputy chief, said two direct storms are forecast to affect the country during these two months.

He said there is no storm affecting Thailand at the moment and persistent rainfall causing runoff and flooding in the northern region and the upper part of the northeastern region is due to the monsoon weather system. Continued …

Phuket’s Big Buddha Foundation under fire for deadly landslide

The Phuket Big Buddha Foundation faces serious allegations from the Forest Department involving land encroachment, after a tragic mudslide last week at Khao Nak Kerd claimed 13 lives, mostly Myanmar nationals.

Officials from various local authorities, including the Forest Department and Phuket Buddhism Office, recently inspected the Big Buddha site to ascertain if it complied with the 2.4-hectare land limit established by the Forest Department. Using GPS technology, they discovered the site extends over 3.2 hectares, far exceeding the permitted area. This extra space reportedly accommodates parking, restrooms, and other amenities. Thai women track down alleged molester, call police

In a disturbing incident that has raised serious concerns about the safety of ride-sharing services, a Bolt driver was arrested for molesting two young women on separate occasions. The suspect, identified as Seksan S, 47, was taken into custody by police from Banglamung Police Station on Aug. 27.

The first victim, a 15-year-old girl referred to as Miss Am, recounted her ordeal to the media. On Aug. 25 around 4:30 a.m., she called a white Toyota Vios through the Bolt app. She requested a ride from Soi 17, Pattaya Second Road, to her destination in Soi Nong Ket Yai. Two more deaths from moonshine poisoning

Two more deaths have taken the toll in Bangkok’s moonshine methanol scare to six, as investigators widen their search for those producing and selling the deadly rotgut beyond the city’s northern suburbs.

Thailand is gearing up for a significant influx of South Korean tourists during the upcoming six-day Chuseok holiday, hoping to hit a record high of 2 million Korean visitors by the year’s end. UK warns travelers not to smuggle pot into country

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned travelers to the United Kingdom from Thailand, Canada and the United States that any attempt to bring cannabis into the country could see them sent to jail after a huge increase in arrests was reported.

According to the British embassy in Bangkok, 378 air passengers have been arrested for smuggling cannabis, and an estimated 15 tons of the drug has been detected and seized at UK airports so far this year. New Rule Lets Convicts Serve Sentences Outside Thai Prisons

Thailand’s Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong justified a new regulation that allows convicts to be held outside traditional prison facilities. This measure, introduced by the Department of Corrections, is intended to help ease prison overcrowding in Thailand, where the inmate population of about 220,000 greatly surpasses the system’s capacity of 150,000 to 160,000.

The video, which includes scenes of the family washing and bathing the elephants, has attracted significant criticism from animal welfare groups.

(Editor: As someone who has “interacted” closely with elephants at one of Elephant Nature Park’s satellite locations outside Chiang Mai, we strongly disagree with this being detrimental to the elephants – depending on the sanctuary. The elephants we visited had free roam of the jungle and grasslands in their particular location. They were not penned up and, importantly, they were not ridden. If the older elephants had been mistreated years before, they weren’t now, and the young elephant we met was just a rowdy 3-year-old, with seemingly no cares in the world. Elephant Nature Park is the ideal model, and there are “sanctuaries” where elephants are not treated well. Do your homework!)

Two Russians among 10 killed in Phuket landslide

Ten people were killed when their houses were buried by a landslide in Phuket province on Friday. The landslide from the Nakkerd Mountain killed two Russians, six Myanmars and one Thai citizen. As for the 10th deceased, there is no information regarding nationality yet.

Army lawyer joins Hua Hin pub death probe

The Royal Thai Army has appointed a military lawyer to monitor a police investigation into the fatal shooting of one of its intelligence officers in an unlicensed Hua Hin bar that was open after the legal closing time. The army sargeant reportedly was shot in the back of the head.

The Thailand Open tennis tournament will be held next month at Arena Hua Hin, said Suwat Liptapanlop, honorary president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT).

Nine confirmed dead in Chachoengsao plane crash

A small plane carrying nine people, including passengers and crew, crashed just 10 minutes after takeoff in Chachoengsao province yesterday. All on board are dead. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, when officials began the grim task of recovering the wreckage in Moo 6, Ban Khao Din, Bang Pakong district.

Deadly new mpox strain hits Thailand

Thailand confirmed its first case of a potentially deadlier strain of mpox, marking Asia’s first encounter with the virus variant known as Clade 1b. This development follows hot on the heels of the first reported case outside Africa, in Sweden, just a week ago.

Since last year, mpox has claimed at least 450 lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo, spreading across previously unaffected regions, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. MRTA plans rail systems in 4 provinces

Bangkok to Beijing train: Mekong River railway bridge opens

Travelers are one step closer to a train journey from Bangkok to Beijing as a new railway bridge over the Mekong River has opened, linking Thailand and Laos by rail for the first time. This milestone, completed last month, leaves just a few dozen miles of a trackless gap before the route can finally reach China.

With the launch of this new service, passengers can now enjoy a 12-hour train journey from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Station to Khamsavath Station in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. However, Khamsavath, located about 9.7 kilometers outside Vientiane, is currently the final stop on this route. 10k handout begins in Sept, prioritizing vulnerable sections

The 10,000-baht handout under the digital wallet scheme would kick-off in September, with priority being given to vulnerable sections of society, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra revealed on Thursday. Changan to open Thai EV factory next March

Changan Automobile’s first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia is set to open in Thailand in the first quarter of next year, with a total investment budget exceeding 10 billion baht.

“We expect to start producing battery EVs in March 2025,” said Shen Xinghua, managing director of Changan Auto Southeast Asia, a subsidiary of the Chongqing-based company. Soi 80 gunman out on bail, bar closed

The accused in a fatal shooting of a sergeant in a local pub has been given bail by a Hua Hin court. The head of the Hua Hin Police Station’s Police Affairs Monitoring Committee confirmed that the suspect has been suspended to ensure a fair investigation and comfort the victim’s family.

The accused is 34-year-old Jagkrit, an adviser to the Hua Hin Police Affairs Monitoring Committee in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. He is accused of shooting and killing 31-year-old Sgt. Major Rochnaporn, also known as Sergeant Punch, a soldier from the Thanarat Camp in Pranburi. Continued …

Tobacco health warnings ‘mandatory’, with Bt5,000 fine

A new control measure on cigarette and tobacco sales takes effect today, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has announced, saying that violations carry a maximum fine of 5,000 baht.

Painter Falls to His Death from 49th Floor of Bangkok High-Rise

Yesterday, police from Phra Khanong Police Station received a report of a fatal fall at a building in Soi Sukhumvit 64/2, Phra Khanong District, Bangkok. The victim, a 30-year-old painter from Laos, had been working on the exterior of a 49-story building under renovation.

Witnesses reported the victim had been rappeling down from the 49th floor to paint the building when an accident occurred. It is suspected that the safety equipment and rope securing him had shifted, causing him to fall to his death. – aseannow.com

Thai Red Cross offers mpox vaccine for 8,500 baht per dose

The Thai Red Cross Society has initiated mpox (formerly monkeypox) vaccinations for the public, priced at 8,500 baht per dose, primarily targeting men who have sex with men and individuals with multiple sexual partners.

The Thai Red Cross has imported the vaccine, which reportedly reduces the severity of the disease by 68 to 80%. Upon verifying with the Thai Red Cross Society, it was confirmed that there is currently no direct mpox vaccine. An endangered tapir previously thought to be extinct was spotted in a forest in southern Thailand. Footage shows a rare Malayan tapir roaming in the undergrowth at the Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province on Aug. 18.

The Malayan tapir is distributed throughout the tropical lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra in Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Thai economy said ‘nearly in crisis’

Thailand’s economy is nearly in crisis due to declining exports and uncompetitive manufacturing, caretaker Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said today.

Economists have come out to say that Thailand’s economy may have bottomed out and the outlook is a little more optimistic for the year ahead after the country’s economic growth was slightly better than expected, as announced by the National Economic & Social Development Council (NESDC).

No problems with cash distribution via digital wallet scheme

The Budget Bureau would have no objection if the government were to change the disbursement of the 10,000-baht financial benefit under the “digital wallet” scheme from “digital money” to cash, as long as the objective of the scheme is to stimulate the economy and the disbursement begins in September, Chalermphol Pensoot, the bureau’s director, said today.

Following the waste that’s choking the Chao Phraya

The Chao Phraya River is born from mountain streams in northern Thailand, flowing hundreds of kilometers south to the sea. By the time the river travels through Bangkok and empties into the Gulf of Thailand, it is carrying huge quantities of plastic waste – an estimated 4,000 tons every year. A disagreement Sunday morning at an unlicensed Soi 80 Hua Hin pub led to the fatal shooting of Sgt. Major Rojchanaphon Rojchanaphanit, an intelligence officer at Thanarat Camp. The commotion at Tiny Club saw police commissioner Jakkrit Worawongphanitkul allegedly pulling a 9 mm. pistol, fatally shooting Punch and injuring two other patrons.

At approximately 4 am , Hua Hin Police Station received a report about a dispute turning violent in the Tiny Club on Soi Hua Hin 80. Responders, including high-ranking officers and forensic teams, quickly arrived at the chaotic scene littered with broken bottles and a large pool of blood. Continued …

A Thai window cleaner fell to his death on Saturday after his scaffold gondola platform collapsed and plummeted from the 31st floor of a hotel in Soi Sukhumvit 24, Bangkok.

The southern dual-track route from Nakhon Pathom to Chumphon covering 421 kilometers was opened to passengers on Monday, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said.
