‘Health park” to open in Hin Lek Fai area

Hua Hin Health Park is set to open in the Hin Lek Fai area of Hua Hin. With completion expected in November, the site is located near the Hua Hin International School and Black Mountain Golf Course.

The park will offer a range of health, retail, and food and beverage options, including specialized facilities like the Spine Clinic and the Be Well Medical Center. The park will also include a pharmacy, deli, coffee shop, wine shop and other retail outlets.

Sam Roi Yat marsh boardwalk reopened

The boardwalk at Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, a one-kilometer-long wooden structure stretching over the Thung Sam Roi Yot freshwater marsh on the western side of the park, has been given a new lease of life. Previously, due to disrepair, only a small section of the boardwalk was accessible to the public. (HHT)

Heavy downpours forecast across 42 Thai provinces

The country has been warned of possible intense downpours today by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), affecting 42 major provinces across Thailand, including Bangkok. Residents are being cautioned of sudden flash floods.

At 5am today, the TMD forecasted a 24-hour weather change with the intrusion of monsoons from the north and northeast. These monsoons are heading toward a low-pressure area along the Vietnamese coast, reinforcing the southwest monsoon that currently covers the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. Pheu Thai to install Srettha as prime minister with coalition pact with government parties

The Move Forward Party is on the verge of being given a sideways shift by its coalition partner, Pheu Thai, as the country grapples with a political crisis caused by opposition to the Move Forward Party from the unelected Senate and heightened tensions over the radical party’s insistence on pursuing its controversial policy to amend Article 112 of the Criminal Code on lèse-majesté.

It is being predicted that a new government led by Pheu Thai with Srettha Thavisin as prime minister may be installed on Thursday, July 27, although it will come at a hefty political price, as it will see Pheu Thai abandoning key pre-election commitments and the democratic principle spoken about at length in the weeks after the May 14 general election. Move Forward will support Pheu Thai PM candidate

The Move Forward Party has made a political retreat by agreeing to support a candidate from the Pheu Thai Party for prime minister, when parliament meets in a joint sitting again next Thursday, its Secretary-general Chaithawat Tulathon said yesterday.

Legal experts challenge parliament’s rejection of Pita’s renomination

Several Thai legal experts and political scientists have challenged parliament’s decision to reject Move Forward party leader Pita Limjaroenrat’s renomination as Thailand’s prime minister, insisting Rule 41, which was used to justify the decision, cannot overrule the Constitution.

Professor Tongthong Chandransu, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law of Chulalongkorn University, said that he shares the opinion of former constitution writer Borwornsak Uwanno that the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, has a higher legal status than parliamentary meeting regulations. Thai Chamber reducing food waste by delivering 900,000 meals

The Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) is aiming to reduce the amount of food being wasted by supplying 900,000 meals to underprivileged people in Thailand this year. The project marks the chamber’s 90th anniversary.

So far this year, more than 420,000 meals have been delivered and each one used surplus food that passed safety standards, the TCC announced on Thursday, adding that it is receiving assistance from the Scholars of Sustenance (SOS) Foundation to implement the project. Continued …

Thailand’s adult female literacy placed 6th among ASEAN countries

A report on gender equality and development shows that, despite significant progress in education equality, the disparity still exists. The literacy rate of Thailand’s adult females in 2022 was 92.4%, which was lower than most other ASEAN countries, according to The Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The ADB states that the Philippines had a rate of 98.2%, Brunei 96.3%, Singapore 95.9%, Indonesia 94.0%, Vietnam 93.6% and Malaysia 93.5%. ASEAN countries with a lower literacy rate than Thailand are Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Continued …

Myanmar military ramps up defenses opposite Mae Hong Son

Some 3,000 soldiers from the Myanmar military army arrived in Doi Sam Muang and Japasa Camp in Kayah State opposite Mae Hong Son’s Muang district on Thursday to reinforce the army’s positions.

The army has been holding these areas to fend off attacks by the Karenni Army (KA) and the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF), and has also prohibited some 400 local villagers from leaving the areas. New firms surge amid Thai recovery

New corporate registrations are expected to reach 83,000-90,000 this year, boosted by the increase in foreign tourists and the Thai economic recovery, outstripping an earlier projection of 75,000-78,000, according to the Commerce Ministry’s Business Development Department.

Thosapone Dansuputra, director-general of the department, said his department previously estimated that the number of new business registrations in the first half of this year would be 42,000-45,000, but the actual number increased to 47,286. Continued …

Foreigner forgets valuables, departing Chiang Mai flight diverted to terminal

A Thai Smile Airways flight had to make an emergency stop as it taxied down the runway after a foreign passenger demanded the plane return to the terminal gate so he could pick up his left-behind valuables at Chiang Mai International Airport.

A Thai TikTok user shared a video of the incident when a foreign man urged a flight attendant to stop the plane because he forgot his belongings. The video recorder also panned to her left side showing that the plane was moving on the runway while the foreigner requested it to stop. Continued …

9 Immigration officers transferred after providing VIP escort to Chinese star

The Immigration Police Bureau has ordered the transfers of nine immigration officers from Suvarnabhumi Airport, after they were seen in viral video clips escorting Chinese superstar Jackson Wang.

The transfers were ordered after the bureau received complaints from other passengers using the airport at the time Wang arrived, saying that Wang obtained special treatment and police protection, while they had to spend more time waiting for service at the immigration counters as a direct result of Wang’s arrival and protection. Parliament Prevents Leader of Party That Won Election From Being Renominated for Prime Minister

In a day that was bitterly disappointing for Move Forward Party (MFP) supporters and prime minister candidate Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the MFP, was suspended from his duties as a MP and denied the chance for a second vote to become prime minister.

Limjaroenrat, 43, and his party won the most seats in the House of Representatives in the last Thai election and formed a coalition with seven other parties, including Pheu Thai, who was a close second in number of MP seats. This coalition was determined to form a government with Pita as the PM, but multiple factors prevented this. Continued … 

Parliament to meet again July 27 to select prime minister

Another joint sitting of the House and Senate, for the selection of Thailand’s new prime minister, has been scheduled for 9.30am on Thursday, July 27, House speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha said Wednesday night.

He said that the meeting will begin with the nomination by political parties of prime ministerial candidates, followed by a debate on the qualifications of the nominees, which must be completed by 5pm, after which there will be a roll call vote. Continued …

Pheu Thai primed to form government

The Pheu Thai Party has emerged in pole position to form a new government after parliament on Wednesday rejected a bid to renominate Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat for a prime ministerial vote, citing a parliamentary meeting regulation.

Expressway tolls likely to rise by 5 baht

The Expressway Authority of Thailand (Exat) is to consider hiking toll fees of three expressways by 5 baht, in line with rising inflation, during its board meeting next Tuesday, a source familiar with the matter said.

ADB revises up Thailand’s GDP growth forecast for this year

In its latest Asian Development Outlook report, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said that developing Asia-Pacific countries can be expected to expand by 4.8% this year.

Charter court suspends Pita

The Constitutional Court this morning suspended Move Forward Party leader and prime ministerial candidate Pita Limjaroenrat from duty as an elected member of the House of Representatives.

US expresses concern about the democratic ‘will of the people’

As Thailand faces the second round of decisive votes to elect the kingdom’s next prime minister, there is growing concern about a Constitutional Court petition that could see the Move Forward Party dissolved. This was referenced on Monday night by the U.S. State Department in Washington, DC, where a spokesman said the United States was concerned about the situation in the kingdom and respect for the democratic will of the people.

The U.S. State Department in Washington has gone on record expressing concern at the situation in the aftermath of the May 14 general election in Thailand. A top spokesman for the State Department, Matthew Miller referred to the pending legal cases being reviewed since last Wednesday by the Constitutional Court. Continued …

Five years ago, Adul Samon was rescued from a cave along with his 11 Thai soccer teammates and their coach. Now, he’s graduating from an American high school – and has reunited with one of his rescuers.

Warning issued against personal use of dengue testing kits

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is planning to attract 25.8 million tourists from short-haul countries next year, 2024. TAT Deputy Gov. Thanet Petchsuwan said TAT is targeting tourists from the Asian and South Pacific markets aka the short-haul markets.

The goal of attracting 25.8 million tourists from these markets was set during the recent meeting of TAT. This number represents 74% of the overall next year target of 35 million international tourists. As a Loop Abroad Veterinary Service participant, biology senior Brycelyn Ramirez spent two weeks in Thailand helping animals, discovering Thai culture and gaining hands-on veterinary experience. Ramirez and her team volunteered at the Elephant Nature Park in northern Thailand, working directly with the giant animals and learning about large-scale animal rescue and conservation efforts. Two herds of elephants forage for food in fruit orchards in Trat province

Wildlife officials in Thailand’s eastern province of Trat have been trying to push two herds of wild elephants back into the forest, after they emerged to search for food on farmland and in fruit orchards on Monday night.

Storm Talim advances on Thailand

Several provinces are likely to be hit with heavy to very heavy rain from today to Thursday due to the influence of severe tropical storm Talim, the Thai Meteorological Department said in a weather warning issued today.

The department said the storm is hovering over Guangxi region in southern China, with wind speeds at the eye of about 100 km/hour. The Move Forward-led eight-party coalition has decided to propose Pita Limjaroenrat as its candidate for prime minister in the second round of voting on July 19. The decision was made at a meeting of the eight-party coalition on Monday at Thai Summit Tower in Bangkok, Pita revealed.

Chon Buri resident’s lucky escape from giant lizard lurking in toilet

A resident of the Bang Nang community in Chon Buri’s Phan Thong district encountered an outsized lizard in his toilet. He was fortunate enough to evade a potential bite after doing his business as usual and alerted others of the lurking danger with detailed posts on social media.

Weather warning issued for Hua Hin, PKK

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has issued a weather warning for parts of Prachuap Khiri Khan, in effect from today to July 20 (Thursday). The warning covers the districts of Hua Hin, Thap Sakae, Bang Saphan, and Bang Saphan Noi.

The weather conditions are expected to bring heavy to very heavy rains, the warning stated.

Heavy rain forecast for most of Thailand

Heavy rain and flash flooding is forecast to hit the northeast, east, and southern regions over the next few days, while Bangkok and its surrounding areas will also experience rain, heavy at times, over 60% of the total area.

The monsoon trough passing through the upper northern and upper northeastern regions, along with the southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea and the southern Gulf of Thailand, is responsible for the increase in rainfall. The Move Forward Party has shifted its focus to the amendment of Section 272 of the constitution, to exclude senators from the prime minister voting process, after leader of the party, Pita Limjaroenrat, failed to become Thailand’s 30th prime minister on Thursday.

Section 272 empowers the 250 senators to join the 500 members of the House of Representatives to vote for prime minister between 2019 and 2023. Probe ordered into large amount of missing Navy ammunition

Move Forward Party’s Thai PM Candidate Pita Fails First Round of Voting

Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the Move Forward Party, has failed to gather sufficient votes of 375 from the joint sitting Parliament, resulting in him failing the first round of the prime ministerial vote.

Pita needed at least 375 out of 749 votes from the upper and lower houses to take the Thai prime minister office. However, the official results are that the PM-hopeful was only able to gather 324 votes, which was not half of the parliament. Moreover, only 674 parliamentarians were present at the time of voting. Thailand is facing a deep political crisis as Pita loses key vote

Thai politics took a step further into what could be a serious political crisis on Thursday when parliament failed to elect list MP Pita Limjaroenrat as Thailand’s 30th prime minister, even after he was the only nominee before parliament supported by an eight-party coalition representing 72% of voters and 62% of seats in the House of Representatives.

In an often ill-tempered and fiery debate, opposition to Pita came from the Senate and MPs aligned with the outgoing government, which decisively lost the May 14 general election. Continued …

Police Prepare For Nationwide Protests

National Police Chief Damrongsak Kittipraphat early this morning ordered police nationwide to prepare for possible protests, with Parliament strongly guarded following prime minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat failing to get enough votes to take the helm of the government at a joint House/senate meeting yesterday.

The pro-Pita votes cast by the lawmakers yesterday only accounted for 324 votes, 13 of which came from senators, but it was 51 votes short of a minimum of 375 accounting for more than half the combined total of MPs and senators as required by law. Continued …

Most of Thailand will see heavy rain from Sunday to next Thursday (July 16-20) due to the influence of a strong monsoon trough, the Thai Meteorological Department said in a weather warning issued today.

PTT puts renewable strategy into overdrive

National oil and gas conglomerate PTT Plc is stepping up efforts to use more renewable power and further develop its hydrogen fuel business, part of a move to grow the company in a sustainable manner.

Given the name Thomas at birth, this man is now called Tom by his family and friends in England and other parts of the world, but is pretty much universally known as Tommy Taylor by his Thai friends and his many contacts in wildlife protection and conservation.

Triple surge in dengue cases challenge Thai healthcare system

A surge in dengue patients has been recorded in the first half of this year, with numbers almost triple that of the same period last year, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC). The dengue outbreak continues to challenge the healthcare system, as the number of infected individuals soars.

Ceremony held to remember those who died during Tham Luang rescue

A religious ceremony was held this morning in front of Tham Luang cave, in the Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non National Park in Chiang Mai, to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the dramatic search and rescue mission for 12 members of the “Wild Boar” school footballer team and their coach, trapped inside the flooded cave from June 23 to July 10, 2018.

The ceremony was also held to pay respects to two members of the Thai Navy SEAL team who died during the rescue, Saman Kunan and Beirut Pakbara, the late Chiang Rai Gov. Narongsak Osottanakorn, who supervised the search and rescue operations, and Duangphet Promthep, one of the footballers who died in February this year while studying in Britain. Continued …

Tourism remains the engine of growth for the Thai economy, and with the number of foreign visitors continuing to rise, economic growth will pick up, according to the Bank of Thailand monetary policy department Director Sakkapop Panyanukul.

Hundreds of students in Hua Hin will receive basic life-saving training this week as part of an effort to reduce the number of deaths from drowning.

New Thai prime minister set to take center stage in joint sessions showdown

The Deputy House Speaker-elect announced the highly anticipated installation of the new prime minister of Thailand is likely to be installed within the first three joint sessions of the House of Representatives and the Senate, scheduled over the next two weeks.

Deputy House Speaker-elect Pichet Chuamuangphan said that the three sessions are planned for July 13, 19 and 20, providing ample time for the election of the new prime minister. The coalition allies, comprising eight political parties rallying behind Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat, currently possess 312 votes in the House. However, they still require the support of 64 legislators to secure the necessary 376 votes to endorse Pita, whose party emerged victorious in the May 14 general election with 151 House seats. Dengue cases surge threefold, with 33 fatalities already this year

Over 27,000 people fell ill with dengue fever during the first half of this year and 33 of them died, the chief of the Disease Control Department said on Thursday.

Hospital records show that from Jan. 1 to June 28, 27,377 people were treated for dengue, three times higher than the same period of last year. The DCD chief said 33 people succumbed to the mosquito-borne virus during the period. Continued …

Warning issued over ‘soil fever’ surge amid rainy season

Health authorities in Nakhon Ratchasima have issued a warning over cases of melioidosis, commonly known as “soil fever.” The lethal and infectious disease is mostly found in soil, paddy fields, farmlands, vegetable plots, rubber plantations, and ponds.

Agricultural communities in Loei, a province in northeast Thailand, are grappling with the daunting invasion of wild elephants from the Phu Luang Wildlife Reserve. 35% of hotel operators say they will lay off workers to offset planned wage hike

More than one-third of hotel operators will lay off workers if a Move Forward-led government increases the daily minimum wage to the rate the party said it would during the election campaign, a nationwide survey of 120 hotel operators found. The survey was conducted by the Thai Hotels Assn. and the Bank of Thailand from June 9 to June 23.

Hotel association President Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi said 35% of the survey’s respondents said they would have to lay off staff to keep their businesses viable if the daily wage was increased. Continued …

EV Board to urge new govt to pass EV 3.5 package

The National Electric Vehicle Policy Board (EV Board) will be urging the new government to pass the EV 3.5 package, which includes providing discounts for imported electric vehicles (EVs), establishing EV manufacturing plants, as well as offering incentives to stimulate investment in EV battery production facilities. It is due to come into effect on Jan. 1, 2024.

AoT announces expansion plans for Don Mueang Airport

Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) is looking to the future with an ambitious plan to expand Don Mueang airport over the next six years.

According to AoT’s CEO Kirati Kitmanawat, the AoT’s capital investment plan to develop Don Mueang International Airport phase 3 with an estimated investment of 36.83 billion baht has been approved by the Cabinet. The project is currently in the design phase and is expected to be completed and open for bidding in 2024.
