PM to chair Pheu Thai party meeting in Hua Hin tomorrow

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will take a day away from matters of government tomorrow so she can chair a general meeting of the Pheu Thai Party in Hua Hin. Also attending will be former prime ministers Thaksin Shinawatra, her father, and Srettha Thavisin.

Paetongtarn will travel to Hua Hin by train, departing from Bangkok in the morning, stopping at Bang Bamru railway station to pick up her family, who will include her sister, Pinthongtha Shinawatra Kunakornwong’s family and her elder brother, Panthongtae Shinawatra. Man Killed by Elephant in Chanthaburi Province

At approximately 11:15 am yesterday, the Sawang Katanyu Rescue Team in Kaeng Hang Maeo District, Chanthaburi Province, received a report of a fatal elephant attack in Moo 6, Khao Lamok Reservoir Soi, Phawa Subdistrict.

Data paints economy as ‘black hole’

I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand.

It is beyond my comprehension that the non-performing loan (NPL) level rose 14.1% in Q3 while the economy expanded 3.0%. Shouldn’t it be the opposite when debtor’s income rises? Continued …

Cabinet approves debt-relief measures

The cabinet on Wednesday approved debt support measures, including interest suspensions and reduced principal payments, to help tackle household and small-business debt, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said. The measures will help retail borrowers and smaller businesses, she told a press conference.

Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira told reporters the cabinet also agreed to allow banks to reduce their annual contribution to the Financial Institutions Development Fund (FIDF) to 0.23% from 0.46% of their deposits for three years. Continued …

Taiwanese semiconductor manufacturer Foxsemicon Integrated Technology Inc. (FITI) has secured privileges from the Board of Investment (BOI) for an investment budget of 10.5 billion baht, BOI announced on Wednesday.

Thailand’s shrimp industry battered by disease, low prices

Thai shrimp production is expected to decrease by 4% year-on-year because of disease outbreaks and falling prices, says the Thai Shrimp Assn. Ekapoj Yodpinit, president of the association, said total shrimp production in 2024 is predicted to fall to 270,000 tons, from 280,000 tons last year.

The decline is attributed to disease outbreaks and unstable weather, which affect the quality of baby shrimp and farming conditions. Falling prices have also prompted some farmers to postpone their new farming cycles. Continued …

The Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry vows to launch more initiatives to modernize traditional agriculture, creating greater economic impact and paving the way for big data in farming.

Wild Elephant Kills Tourist in Loei national park

Nearly 17.5 million motorists will be traveling during New Year break

The upcoming New Year holiday is expected to see a historic surge in people returning to their hometowns or traveling across provinces after the Covid-19 pandemic, Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said on Wednesday.

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. We spent the night in a floating bungalow, soaking up the tranquility and jumping into kayaks whenever we wanted to explore. Continued …

Microsoft unveils closed-loop liquid cooling design for data centers

Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

Data centers rely heavily on water to remove heat from data halls containing servers and other IT equipment. A substantial amount of water evaporates as part of the cooling process and must be constantly replaced. According to a NPR 2024 report, data centers use around “300,000 gallons of water a day to keep cool, roughly equivalent to water use in 100,000 homes.” Continued …

Young people in Thailand call for a bigger role in climate action

Youth advocates yesterday submitted climate action recommendations to the Royal Thai government. The recommendations drew on a national Suan Dusit Poll of nearly 1,000 children and young people across Thailand, followed by one-to-one discussions between UNICEF and young representatives.

The poll found that 93% of young people reported feeling the impact of climate change in their daily lives, affecting their mental and physical health, and that 85% were eager to take action. The recommendations therefore called for stronger measures to tackle the growing impact of climate change, along with greater youth participation in decision-making. Continued …

Coup prevention bill draws opposition

The Bhumjaithai Party has opposed a bill proposed by the ruling Pheu Thai Party to amend the Defense Ministry Administration Act, which is seen as a bid to curb the military’s ability to stage a coup d’etat.

In an incident in Lom Sak district, Phetchabun province, five workers were found dead in a waste pit at a fermented fish factory in Nong Khwai subdistrict. The incident occurred yesterday.

Thailand trails Asia in rice yield race – by a lot

Thailand’s rice yields are significantly lower than other major Asian rice producers, according to Anon Nonsee, deputy director general of the Department of Rice. The average rice yield in Thailand is about 400 to 500 kilograms per rai (0.16 hectares), far below Vietnam’s 1,000 kilograms per rai and China’s 1,000 to 1,200 kilograms per rai.

While some Thai rice varieties can achieve yields similar to these countries, jasmine rice, renowned for its fragrance and soft texture, brings the average down due to its lower yield of 350 to 400 kilograms per rai. Authorities are pursuing legal action against unidentified individuals in a black car who fired four gunshots at wild elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The perpetrators face six serious charges under wildlife, firearm, and national park laws.

The construction incident on Rama II Road has claimed the lives of six people, as rescue and recovery efforts are expected to take two to three days. Authorities have temporarily closed the road and diverted traffic and advised motorists to avoid the area.

Samut Sakhon Gov. Narit Niramaivong and other key officials, including Lt. Col. Santhiti Thammajai from the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, inspected the site. “Our priority is clearing the debris and restoring traffic on this vital route, which serves many commuters,” said Narit. Hua Hin Expat News yesterday listened in on an online webinar regarding the new tax on expat income to be implmented in Thailand next year. There is a great deal of confusion on this subject and the group presenting the webinar has researched how it affects expats from a number of countries.

The group has a website offering insight into this new expat tax HERE.

Thai Exports Continued to Grow in September

In September, Thailand’s exports totaled USD25,983.2 million, reflecting a modest year-over-year growth of 1.1%. This growth slowed from the previous month’s 7% and fell short of analysts’ expectations of 2.9%.

Flight bookings to Thailand are expected to surge by 36% during the Loy Krathong festival, which falls on Friday, government deputy spokesman Karom Polpornklang said on Monday.

According to an Aeronautical Radio of Thailand forecast, 73,500 flights, or 2,450 flights a day, are expected in November, up 36% year on year. Unsafe levels of fine dust blanketed most parts of Greater Bangkok this morning, trapped by stagnant air, and expected to continue until Nov. 20.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) wants to accelerate the development of 14 planned floating solar farm projects with a total capacity of 2,656 megawatts on the reservoirs of its seven hydroelectric dams under the new national power development plan (PDP) of 2024.

Thailand’s Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax

Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Carden emphasized the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax.

Record Loy Krathong spending won’t offset economic problems

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that while spending during the Loy Krathong festival is expected to exceed 10 billion baht, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the economy.

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

Inflation up in Octpber, below forecast

No matter how the United States presidential election turns out, a new round of the U.S.-China trade war is almost inevitable, the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) said on Tuesday, urging Thai businesses to prepare for the impact, namely the shifting of manufacturing and export bases.

Thailand welcomes 29 million tourists, expects more as high season kicks in

Thailand has welcomed more than 29.08 million foreign tourists, generating approximately 1.358 trillion baht in revenue from Jan. 1 to Nov. 3 this year.

According to statistics from the Tourism and Sports Ministry, Chinese tourists topped the list of arrivals with over 5.75 million, followed by tourists from Malaysia (4.18 million), India (1.72 million), South Korea (1.53 million), and Russia (1.3 million) during the period. Continued …

Domestic tourists up 9% YOY, but likely to miss Bt1-trillion revenue goal

The number of domestic travelers in the first nine months of this year crossed 148.02 million person-trips, increasing 8.98% year on year, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) reported on Tuesday. These travelers have generated income to local tourism businesses at around 702.52 billion baht, increasing 12.6% compared with the same period of the previous year, it said.

TAT estimated that total domestic tourists this year could exceed 200 million person-trips, and could even reach 230 million, said Nithee Seeprae, deputy governor for marketing communications. Continued …

Twenty-four cruise ships are scheduled to visit Koh Samui in Surat Thani in the current high season, helping the southern province rise two places in the top 10 list of most-visited Thai destinations, according to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports.

Thai police raided a Chinese-owned recycling plant in Prachinburi province on Monday, seizing over 41.5 tons of hazardous waste, officials said.

Chiang Mai to Hua Hin: Departure 3:25pm, arrival at 4:45pm

Special schedule for Loy Krathong holiday (Nov 15): departure from Hua Hin 2pm, arrival in Chiang Mai 3:15pm
