Thailand braces for tropical storm and cool winds in 24 provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a weather warning today, highlighting heavy rain in 24 provinces and urging vigilance regarding the powerful tropical storm Trami. Northern Thailand will experience cool weather and strong winds, while the southern seas will see high waves.

In the southern region (eastern coast), 40% of the area will experience thunderstorms, particularly in the provinces of Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla. A huge fish in the Mekong River thought to be extinct has been spotted three times in recent years. “The giant salmon carp is like a symbol of the Mekong region,” said Chheana Chhut, a researcher at the Inland Fisheries Research and Development Institute in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Casino Complex Law Set to Reach Thai Cabinet by Year-End

Cambodian-Thai trade up 10%, tops US$3 billion Jan-Sept

Bilateral trade between Cambodia and Thailand continues as usual, reaching over US$3.1 billion in the first nine months of the year, an increase of more than 10% over the same period in 2023. Thailand is Cambodia’s fourth-largest trading partner, after China, the U.S. and Vietnam, according to the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).

GDCE statistics show that from January to September, total trade between Cambodia and Thailand amounted to $3.169 billion, up 12.4% from the same period in 2023. Continued …

IMF forecasts 3.2% global growth for 2024-25, with Thailand trailing ASEAN

The global war against inflation has largely been won — and at surprisingly little cost to economic growth, the International Monetary Fund declared Tuesday.

In its latest assessment of the global economy, the IMF predicted that worldwide inflation will cool from 6.7% last year to 5.8% this year and to 4.3% in 2025. It estimates that inflation will fall even faster in the world’s wealthy countries, from 4.6% last year to 2.6% this year and 2% — the target range for most major central banks — in 2025. Tweaks needed for northern Thailand tourism project

The new co-payment tourism promotion program for northern destinations in Thailand will need an upgrade in terms of both the amount of subsidies from the government and number of tourists to receive them, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said on Wednesday.

Thailand has reported 26.08 million arrivals in the nine-month Jan.-Sept. 2024 period, up 30.09% over the same period of 2023. A deeper analysis shows how the country is benefiting from both internal peace and external conflicts as it seeks to safeguard the role of tourism as an economic mainstay in the second year of post-Covid recovery.

It had been earlier hoped, although not targeted, that arrivals would hit the 40 million mark of pre-Covid 2019. Cabinet set to approve new contract for rail project linking 3 airports

The amended contract for the high-speed rail project linking three airports is now in the final phase and will be presented to the cabinet for approval next Tuesday (October 29), the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) said.

Metropolitan Police in Bangkok have issued warnings to tourists, particularly those carrying cash or valuables, in the most popular areas of the capital. The first warning comes after the arrest on Oct. 18th of an Iranian tourist who had targeted tourists while purporting to be a police officer. The culprit would identify cash in their belongings and appropriate a portion before escaping in a car.

Yesterday, police raided The Icon Group’s network, seizing assets from 18 suspects believed to have been obtained through illicit activities. Seventeen executives and core members of the iCon Group were ordered detained last night, after the Criminal Court rejected the bail applications for three of them on the grounds that they may try to interfere with evidence or flee, and because their alleged offenses are serious and have widespread impacts.

Two Thai Women Arrested for Scamming Tourists with Fake Resort Bookings in Pattaya

Two Thai women were arrested for creating fake Facebook pages to scam tourists out of deposits for luxury resort bookings in Pattaya. The suspects were arrested by Tourist Police at their residences in Chonburi and Samut Prakan provinces. Both face charges of “fraud by entering false information into a computer system”.

Bitcoin mining dens that stole 100 million baht of electricity raided

A team of Department of Special Investigation (DSI) police, together with Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) officials, raided houses and commercial buildings at several locations across Kanchanaburi that had been turned into Bitcoin mining dens and effectively stolen over 100 million baht in electricity annually.

Finance Ministry calls for weaker baht, wants 2024 rate cut

The Ministry of Finance ratcheted up pressure on the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to cut interest rates to boost the economy and weaken the baht, just a day after an influential former governor warned against government meddling in the central bank.

13 million speed pills seized in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Highway police seized over 13 million methamphetamine pills and arrested two couriers in Bang Saphan district of Prachuap Khiri Khan on Monday.

The discovery was made when officers stopped a 22-wheel trailer truck with a Songkhla license plate at a checkpoint at kilometer marker 378 of Phetkasem Road, police said at a briefing in Bangkok on Tuesday. Continued …

Death toll in bus blaze tragedy rises to 22 students, 3 teachers

The death toll from a devastating bus blaze tragedy on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok has soared to 25. Among the victims were 22 young students and three teachers.

According to a grim update, the ill-fated coach was packed with 44 students, aged between three and nine, along with their teachers from Wat Khao Phraya Sangkharam School in Uthai Thani. Thailand needs to revamp its rules for school bus operations

As details emerge of the gruesome school bus fire yesterday that claimed the lives of 22 young children and three teachers, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport need to start to ponder on the revamping the rules governing use of vehicles used for transporting children.

In the early afternoon incident yesterday, the three teachers in the back were unable to open the emergency exit’doors and were reportedly covering the students when their charred bodies were found by the forensic team. Water levels in Phitsanulok rise as Yom River receives upstream runoff

The flooding in Phitsanulok province, particularly in the Bang Rakam Model area, is being impacted by the overflow from the Yom River basin, which is flooding both the old and main channels of the Yom River. The affected areas include Phrom Phiram, Mueang and Bang Rakam districts.

The Bang Rakam flood retention field, part of the project to manage floodwaters after the harvest season, has now exceeded its capacity, holding 440 million cubic meters of water (110%). A bustling Pattaya City mall turned into a scene of chaos when a nearly 3-meter- long python made an unexpected appearance. The incident, which occurred Monday, saw the Pattaya Land Disaster Prevention Radio Center receiving a report of a large snake spotted under a car in the mall’s parking lot on Pattaya Klang Road.

Minister pledges Bt400 daily wage by year’s end

Cash transfers reach 14 million Thais

The Finance Ministry has deemed the first round of the cash handout program as successful at stimulating the economy, as more than 14 million people received transfers. Only 2% of the transfers were unsuccessful, said Pornchai Thiraveja, director-general of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO).

Airbnb reports 30% surge in Thailand bookings

As Thailand’s tourism sees a resurgence and the industry prepares for the start of the upcoming high season in Q4, Airbnb has released Thailand travel data for the first half of this year. The data shows an increasing interest in travel to Thailand among guests, with combined domestic and international bookings surging over 30% in H1 2024 compared to H1 2023.

Travel habits among international and domestic travelers were similar, with Bangkok the #1 most-booked destination in Thailand by Airbnb guests in H1 2024. The brown circles stretching across the grass didn’t initially grab my attention as the caddie drove down the fairway at Khao Yai Country Club. State hospitals ‘facing financial troubles’

A top Public Health Ministry official has admitted that state-owned hospitals nationwide are facing financial problems, and cooperation is urgently needed from their directors to help fix the issue.

Heavy rain and potential flash floods have been forecast across Thailand until Tuesday, Sept. 17, warns the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD). The announcement cautioned that several regions would experience increased rainfall and strong winds in the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand.

Northern Mekong River provinces battling the most severe flooding in 40–50 years

Northern Thailand is on high alert after heavy flooding mid-week hit Chiang Rai province, particularly the Mae Sai district. However, as water recedes there after closing Chiang Rai Airport, the Mekong River will continue to rise from Friday until next Tuesday.

For instance, elevated water levels were measured as rising 1.23 meters in Nong Khai on Thursday as rescue services and officials prepare for the threatened overflow of the river. This is due to 2-3 times the normal rainfall in the region over the last few days, caused by an acute depression. 36,000+ families in north, central Thailand still flooded in

As many as 36,199 households in 24 districts of seven provinces in the north and central regions are still overwhelmed by heavy flooding, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said. In its last update on Thursday, the department said 545 villages in 24 districts in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Tak, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Ang Thong and Ayutthaya were still inundated.

From Aug. 16, a total of 106,467 families in 2,975 villages in 125 districts in 27 provinces were affected by floods, the department said. Since then, some 33 people have died from drowning or landslides, and 24 have sustained injuries. Continued …

Expat News: If only it were that simple. First, most of the air pollution is caused by agricultural burning, not garbage burning. Second, much of the air pollution from burning is coming from neighboring countries and most is from agriculture. Third, unless somehow Thai farmers are provided with modern farming equipment, which they cannot afford and which will cause the price of their products to escalate, they will continue to do what they have done for centuries.

A century-old parkia speciosa tree in Trang province has captivated the market due to its large, long pods and superior taste, generating up to 40,000 baht annually from a single tree.

At Suan Ta Chan Tonmai Panpi in Trang’s Na Yong district, 53-year-old Satit Ramna hired locals to climb and harvest the pods from his four 100-year-old parkia speciosa trees. Despite a prolonged drought lasting over three months, each tree is expected to yield between 800 and 1,000 pods this year, slightly less than usual. New expat tax regime may link visas and tax returns

The Revenue Department is preparing draft legislation to further its global tax initiative, including plans to tax all foreign residents on their worldwide income, irrespective of whether the money is remitted to Thailand. However, for most expats and those considering Thailand as a place to live, the discussion is only just beginning.

In the meantime, the key consideration is that for those who stay over 180 days in Thailand this year, a tax return is due by March 31, 2025. Certainly, at the very least, foreigners should have obtained and studied their country’s tax treaty with Thailand. Afterward, how the Revenue Department moves to impose its new powers remains to be seen. For instance, it may choose to link tax reporting with the issuance of long-term visas very shortly. Why is Thai healthcare so good?

Thai healthcare is among the most effective in the world. The average Thai can expect to live to 80, much longer than their regional counterpart (the Southeast Asian figure is 73) and even slightly longer than the average American and European (each roughly 79), according to the latest data from the United Nations.

Last year, a whopping 99.5% of the population of 72million was covered by health insurance. Remarkably, Thailand has achieved this as a developing country: its income per person was roughly $7,000 in 2023, more than 11 times smaller than America’s. Low measles vaccination in 3 southern border provinces causes 5 deaths

The Disease Control Department plans to rush measle vaccines to young school kids in the three southern border provinces after the disease outbreak killed five people there last month, the department chief said.

Director-general Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn said on Saturday that measles and German measles were communicable diseases of concern in Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat provinces because of the low vaccination rate in the Muslim-dominated southern border provinces. Continued …

11 central Thai provinces face floods amid typhoon fallout

The Royal Irrigation Department (RID) warned 11 provinces in the central region about the increasing water discharge rate from the Chao Phraya Dam, a move that aims to mitigate the effects of super typhoon Yagi.

Bangkok hospital director promises ‘gas chambers’ for defiant smokers

The director of Mongkutwattana Hospital in Bangkok has vowed to lock defiant smokers on his premises in “gas chambers” until they inhale 100% of their cigarette smoke.

Fisherman survives four days at sea off Satun

A fisherman miraculously survived after floating in the sea off Satun in southern Thailand for four days. Despite exhausting his strength, he managed to stay alive by drinking from a floating bottle of sugarcane juice. His ordeal concluded when waves carried him to Bulon Mai Phai Island.

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn insists on increasing the daily wage to 400 baht nationwide on Oct. 1 despite concerns that the rise will harm businesses.

Gold price falls as baht strengthens

The domestic gold price has dipped by 2,000 baht per baht weight in just over a month, as the Thai currency appreciated by more than 7% during the period, with the Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) noting prices may continue to decline if the value of the baht appreciates.

Hotel Prices Rise as Phuket Sees 42% Increase in Foreign Tourists H1 2024

Carlos Martinez, director of research and advisory at Knight Frank Chartered (Thailand) Co., a Thai real estate advisory firm, commented on the overall tourism industry in Phuket for the first half of 2024, stating that the industry has recovered strongly with a total of 4.3 million tourists, which is only 7% below pre-COVID-19 levels.

Thai police probe Russian mafia link to tourist’s death on Phuket

A Russian tourist found dead in Phuket a few days ago was possibly the victim of a mafia hit, police suggested. The body of 27-year-old Ilia Orlov showed signs of torture and was left in the open in a popular tourist area near Karon Beach.

Which EV markets and models have performed strongest so far in 2024?

In terms of new electric vehicle (EV) volumes, no market was able to pull ahead of China. In the first six months of 2024, the country recorded nearly 4.3 million plug-in deliveries. This meant that battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) made up 43% of the market. BEVs alone made up 25% of sales in this period.

With 41,000 EV registrations, Thailand’s plug-in market recorded growth of 5% in the first half of 2024. Law to tax income from overseas in the works

The Thai Revenue Department is drafting a law to tax the income of individuals residing in Thailand that originates from overseas. The draft follows the international principle of worldwide income under the residence rule, said Kulaya Tantitemit, the director-general of the department.

This principle holds that income earned by an individual, regardless of its source country, must be taxed by the country where the individual resides for a specified period. Continued …

Loss of forest areas in Nan of concern

Inflation in September likely to continue upward trend of last few months

The general inflation rate for September is expected to see a slight increase over August, likely ranging between 0.5% and 0.7%, according to Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO).

Upturn in Electronics and Gold Push July’s Exports to Highest in Over Two Years

AOT aiming high with airport plans

Airports of Thailand (AOT) has outlined an expansion of its six international airports to manage 210 million passengers by 2032. Kerati Kijmanawat, AOT director, on Friday outlined the Ministry of Transport’s strategic plan for 2023-2027, which aims to make Thailand a regional aviation hub.

As part of that, he said that Suvarnabhumi International Airport aims to have 120 million passengers by 2030, while Don Mueang International Airport expects to reach 40 million in the same year. Chiang Mai International Airport will serve 20 million passengers by 2032, Phuket International Airport will handle 18 million passengers by 2028, and Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport and Krabi International Airport will each serve 6 million passengers by 2032. Singapore to build mega airport terminal

Singapore will start construction of a new mega terminal at its Changi Airport in the first half of next year, aiming to lift the aviation hub’s annual passenger handling capacity by another 50 million.

Soi 80 gunman out on bail, bar closed

The accused in a fatal shooting of a sergeant in a local pub has been given bail by a Hua Hin court. The head of the Hua Hin Police Station’s Police Affairs Monitoring Committee confirmed that the suspect has been suspended to ensure a fair investigation and comfort the victim’s family.

The accused is 34-year-old Jagkrit, an adviser to the Hua Hin Police Affairs Monitoring Committee in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. He is accused of shooting and killing 31-year-old Sgt. Major Rochnaporn, also known as Sergeant Punch, a soldier from the Thanarat Camp in Pranburi. Continued …

Thailand offers a multiplicity of long-term visas for women and men well past the first bloom of youth. They include annual extensions of stay, the 5-20 years Elite visa and the 10-year long-term residence (LTR), each of which has its own scale of charges with assorted pluses and minuses.

None of them allows direct ownership of land by foreigners, nor guarantees a path to permanent residency or citizenship. Tobacco health warnings ‘mandatory’, with Bt5,000 fine

A new control measure on cigarette and tobacco sales takes effect today, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) has announced, saying that violations carry a maximum fine of 5,000 baht.

According to DDC Director-general Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, the measure requires retail vendors and establishments selling cigarettes and tobacco to display a 7x21cm poster showing the harm smoking causes at sale points during all operating hours. Continued …

Painter Falls to His Death from 49th Floor of Bangkok High-Rise

Yesterday, police from Phra Khanong Police Station received a report of a fatal fall at a building in Soi Sukhumvit 64/2, Phra Khanong District, Bangkok. The victim, a 30-year-old painter from Laos, had been working on the exterior of a 49-story building under renovation.

Witnesses reported the victim had been rappeling down from the 49th floor to paint the building when an accident occurred. It is suspected that the safety equipment and rope securing him had shifted, causing him to fall to his death. – aseannow.com

Thai Red Cross offers mpox vaccine for 8,500 baht per dose

The Thai Red Cross Society has initiated mpox (formerly monkeypox) vaccinations for the public, priced at 8,500 baht per dose, primarily targeting men who have sex with men and individuals with multiple sexual partners.

The Thai Red Cross has imported the vaccine, which reportedly reduces the severity of the disease by 68 to 80%. Upon verifying with the Thai Red Cross Society, it was confirmed that there is currently no direct mpox vaccine. However, a two-dose subcutaneous vaccination, spaced at least 28 days apart, shows an efficacy rate of 80% to 85% in preventing mpox. Continued …

An endangered tapir previously thought to be extinct was spotted in a forest in southern Thailand. Footage shows a rare Malayan tapir roaming in the undergrowth at the Khao Sok National Park in Surat Thani province on Aug. 18.

The Malayan tapir is distributed throughout the tropical lowland rainforests of Southeast Asia, including Sumatra in Indonesia, Peninsular Malaysia, Myanmar, and Thailand. Thai economy said ‘nearly in crisis’

Thailand’s economy is nearly in crisis due to declining exports and uncompetitive manufacturing, caretaker Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said today.

Economists have come out to say that Thailand’s economy may have bottomed out and the outlook is a little more optimistic for the year ahead after the country’s economic growth was slightly better than expected, as announced by the National Economic & Social Development Council (NESDC).

No problems with cash distribution via digital wallet scheme

The Budget Bureau would have no objection if the government were to change the disbursement of the 10,000-baht financial benefit under the “digital wallet” scheme from “digital money” to cash, as long as the objective of the scheme is to stimulate the economy and the disbursement begins in September, Chalermphol Pensoot, the bureau’s director, said today.

Following the waste that’s choking the Chao Phraya

The Chao Phraya River is born from mountain streams in northern Thailand, flowing hundreds of kilometers south to the sea. By the time the river travels through Bangkok and empties into the Gulf of Thailand, it is carrying huge quantities of plastic waste – an estimated 4,000 tons every year. The plastic clogs the river along its course, drastically impacting communities and the waterway’s ecology.
