New Thai law would target unregistered small hotels

The Tourism and Sports Ministry plans to propose a new Hotel Act dedicated to small and medium-sized hotels, aiming to register more than 500 illegal accommodations that cannot enroll in the current system.

Tourism Vice Minister Jakkaphon Tangsutthitham said there are more than 90,000 small and medium-sized accommodations in Thailand that do not meet the criteria of a hotel business based on existing law. Continued …

There must be easier ways to admit foreigners into Thailand

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has announced that all foreign passport holders will need to fill in a pre-departure online TM6 form starting in May. The main reason is likely the introduction of 60 days visa exempt for millions of tourists that began last July.

They can just turn up at the airport or border post without any documentation, a move that critics say is an open invitation to wannabe criminals of one sort or another. Thailand losing war on PM2.5 as country enters another year under smog

Residents of Thailand face a grim reality as they enter 2025, with skies shrouded by fine dust posing a growing risk to their health.

PM2.5, or dust particles measuring less than 2.5 micrometers in diameter, can be inhaled deep into the lungs, passing into the bloodstream and lodging in other organs. Researchers have linked long-term PM2.5 exposure to premature death, with heightened risk for people with chronic heart or lung disease. Continued …

Unsafe PM2.5 levels blanket 64 provinces

Unsafe levels of PM2.5 dust shrouded Bangkok and 64 of the 76 provinces this morning, with 28 provinces registering red levels and the worst air pollution in Samut Sakhon.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) reached red (hazardous-to-health) levels in 28 provinces, ranging from 75.3 to 133.1 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Bangkok calls for work from home January 20–21 due to PM2.5

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), has announced revised work-from-home (WFH) measures in light of Bangkok’s ongoing PM2.5 air pollution crisis. Projections for PM2.5 levels between today and tomorrow highlight three concerning factors.

If PM2.5 concentrations show a sustained upward trend, WFH measures may be extended through Jan. 24. The BMA has informed WFH network partners to facilitate work planning and minimize disruptions to participating organizations. Continued …

Burnt sugarcane volume on declining trend, says cane and sugar board

The volume of burnt sugarcane during the 2024-25 harvest season is expected to decrease by more than 10% compared to the previous year, with the target set at a 25% reduction, due to several incentives, an official of the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB) said.

The incentives for sugarcane farmers to harvest 100% fresh sugarcane, continuing from last year, aims to increase income from sugarcane leaves and tops. This initiative is expected to help reduce sugarcane burning, lower the causes of PM 2.5 dust pollution, mitigate health impacts on the public, and foster a positive environment for economic activities. Thailand braces for cold weather

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has forecast cold to very cold weather across northern and northeastern Thailand, with temperatures dropping to single digits. Bangkok will see temperatures as low as 18 degrees Celsius. Additionally, five provinces are expected to experience thunderstorms today.

Over the next 24 hours, the northern, northeastern, central, and eastern regions will continue to experience cool to cold weather with morning fog. Upper southern parts, including Bangkok and surrounding areas, will have cool mornings. Continued …

Only 4% of village tap water production clean enough for drinking

The Public Health Ministry plans to have 1,750 more village tap-water plants meet hygiene standards this year after the ministry found that only 420 of all villages nationwide have tap water clean enough for drinking.

Deputy Public Health Minister Dej-is Khaothong said the ministry surveyed 10,271 tap-water plants nationwide from 2018 to 2024, and found that only 420, or 4% of them, produced water hygienic enough for consumption. The survey covered only some of the 69,028 tap-water plants around the country. Continued …

Thailand secures Thai-Myanmar border with barbed wire

According to locals, Thailand has re-fenced illegal entries and exits with barbed wire barriers from the Thai-Myanmar border area on the side of the Phaya Thone Zu area. Before Jan. 15, a resident of Pagoda Thone Zu said that barriers on the Thai side surrounded the illegal entrances and exits to the Thai side.

He continued, “In the past, people from Myanmar had torn the barbed wire to go up and down, and new barbed wire has been re-enclosed. Even though barriers are placed on the Thai side, people do not stop going up and down from the designated areas. Those who go to work on the Thai side also travel regularly.” Continued …

32 Indonesians escape from Myanmar scam hub

As the bosses of a scam center at Myanmar’s Myawaddy township, across the border from Thai town Mae Sot, have come under pressure, 32 Indonesians managed to flee to Thailand yesterday.

A joint patrol of the border by Rajamanu Task Force, Mae Sot and Immigration police and local government officials came across this big group of Indonesians, 30 men and two women, walking along a natural passage to Thailand. Continued …

Casinos: Hitting the jackpot?

At the cabinet meeting last week, the government pressed ahead with a major initiative to stimulate the economy by approving the legalization of casinos under the cloak of an “entertainment complex”.

Critics of the decriminalization of gambling intensified their efforts after former premier Thaksin Shinawatra remarked at a seminar that online gambling should also be legalized to bring underground businesses into the formal tax system, citing its potential to generate 100 billion baht annually. Thailand is hoping for a billion-dollar betting bonanza after the Cabinet approved a bill to legalize casinos last week. The Thai industrial sentiment index dropped for the first time in three months in December, hurt by weak domestic demand and competition from Chinese products, the Federation of Thai Industries said today.

Midea, a Chinese air conditioner and electric appliance manufacturer, is expanding its manufacturing facilities in Thailand.

Elephant Panics at Fireworks Display, Injures Several at Fair

An elephant startled by fireworks at a fair in Nong Bua Lamphu, caused chaos on the event’s opening night, injuring five people as it ran through the crowd. The incident occurred Saturday evening during the annual tribute event to King Naresuan the Great.

Witnesses reported that the elephant became agitated as fireworks were launched and firecrackers set off, during the opening ceremony. In its panic, the animal ran through the fairgrounds, knocking over attendees and causing injuries. US sets tariffs for solar panels from Southeast Asian nations

U.S. trade officials announced on Friday a new round of tariffs on solar panel imports from four Southeast Asian nations after American manufacturers complained that companies there are flooding the market with unfairly cheap goods.

Expat tax returns due by March 31

The director-general of the Revenue Department on Thursday called on taxpayers to file their end-of-year returns for 2024. This will be the first year that all foreign residents in Thailand are included.

To file online 

Changes to tax regulations in 2023 make all income remitted to Thailand by foreign residents in the country for over 180 days last year declarable. The income tax payable by each foreigner depends on the nature of such income and the tax treaty with their country of origin. The question now is how many foreign taxpayers will file returns between now and March 31. After that, it remains to be seen if follow-up actions will be taken against those who fail to do so. Forty-three people were killed and 200 injured in road accidents across Thailand on Thursday, the seventh of the “10 dangerous days” of the New Year holidays.

The casualties were recorded in 196 road crashes, the Road Safety Directing Center of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported yesterday. Tests show high levels of pesticide in fruits

Most fruit samples randomly tested by the Thai Pesticide Alert Network (Thai-Pan) contained hazardous residues that exceeded the safety standard, particularly jujube and oranges.

Thailand is bracing for a cool spell across its north, northeast, and central regions during the new year period, with temperatures expected to remain low until Jan. 9, according to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD).

The department announced that much of the country should prepare for cold mornings, as a robust cold air mass from China is set to blanket upper Thailand, the upper southern region, and the South China Sea from yesterday until Jan. 2. Wild Elephant Herd Threatens Crops in Nakhon Ratchasima

In a concerted effort to protect local farmers’ crops, park rangers and villagers in Nakhon Ratchasima have been on high alert as a herd of wild elephants, estimated to number up to 100, attempts to encroach on farmland near the Thap Lan National Park. The elephants are reportedly trying to enter the Khao Khat valley, a national forest reserve located between the park and local farming areas.

On the night of Dec. 26, Phawatthasart Chanthep, the head of Thap Lan National Park, led a patrol of rangers and volunteer networks to prevent the herd from moving further into the area. PM to chair Pheu Thai party meeting in Hua Hin tomorrow

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra will take a day away from matters of government tomorrow so she can chair a general meeting of the Pheu Thai Party in Hua Hin. Also attending will be former prime ministers Thaksin Shinawatra, her father, and Srettha Thavisin.

Paetongtarn will travel to Hua Hin by train, departing from Bangkok in the morning, stopping at Bang Bamru railway station to pick up her family, who will include her sister, Pinthongtha Shinawatra Kunakornwong’s family and her elder brother, Panthongtae Shinawatra. I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. Cabinet approves debt-relief measures

The cabinet on Wednesday approved debt support measures, including interest suspensions and reduced principal payments, to help tackle household and small-business debt, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said. The measures will help retail borrowers and smaller businesses, she told a press conference.

Thailand’s shrimp industry battered by disease, low prices

Thai shrimp production is expected to decrease by 4% year-on-year because of disease outbreaks and falling prices, says the Thai Shrimp Assn. Ekapoj Yodpinit, president of the association, said total shrimp production in 2024 is predicted to fall to 270,000 tons, from 280,000 tons last year.

The decline is attributed to disease outbreaks and unstable weather, which affect the quality of baby shrimp and farming conditions. Falling prices have also prompted some farmers to postpone their new farming cycles. Continued …

Nearly 17.5 million motorists will be traveling during New Year break

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

Data centers rely heavily on water to remove heat from data halls containing servers and other IT equipment. Young people in Thailand call for a bigger role in climate action

Youth advocates yesterday submitted climate action recommendations to the Royal Thai government. The recommendations drew on a national Suan Dusit Poll of nearly 1,000 children and young people across Thailand, followed by one-to-one discussions between UNICEF and young representatives.

The poll found that 93% of young people reported feeling the impact of climate change in their daily lives, affecting their mental and physical health, and that 85% were eager to take action. Coup prevention bill draws opposition

The Bhumjaithai Party has opposed a bill proposed by the ruling Pheu Thai Party to amend the Defense Ministry Administration Act, which is seen as a bid to curb the military’s ability to stage a coup d’etat.

Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul said on Monday that he did not think the bill would prevent a putsch, adding that politicians must not create conditions that the military may use as an excuse to stage a coup. Continued …

Train services back to normal in southern Thailand Thursday

All southern trains will resume normal operations on Thursday, after fatal flooding in the region damaged the tracks, forcing them to terminate at Hat Yai station.

5 Workers Found Dead at Fermented Fish Factory Pit

In an incident in Lom Sak district, Phetchabun province, five workers were found dead in a waste pit at a fermented fish factory in Nong Khwai subdistrict. The incident occurred yesterday.

Another foreigner falls to his death from Pattaya condo

Early this morning, police authorities in Pattaya were alerted to an incident involving the fatal fall of a foreign national from a condominium on Pattaya Second Road, Nong Prue Subdistrict, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi Province.

Thailand trails Asia in rice yield race – by a lot

Thailand’s rice yields are significantly lower than other major Asian rice producers, according to Anon Nonsee, deputy director general of the Department of Rice. The average rice yield in Thailand is about 400 to 500 kilograms per rai (0.16 hectares), far below Vietnam’s 1,000 kilograms per rai and China’s 1,000 to 1,200 kilograms per rai.

While some Thai rice varieties can achieve yields similar to these countries, jasmine rice, renowned for its fragrance and soft texture, brings the average down due to its lower yield of 350 to 400 kilograms per rai. Thailand MICE sector grows 42% to 1.16 million tourists in 2024

Looking ahead to 2025, Thailand is set to continue its growth, with several major international events expected to attract between 5,000 and 10,000 attendees each. The top five markets driving this growth were China, India, Malaysia, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong, Germany, the United States and Japan. British man commits suicide in Cha Am, leaving sand messages for Thai wife

A British man left messages in the sand for his wife and children before taking his own life on Cha Am Beach in the southern province of Phetchaburi. He was reportedly distressed over two legal cases and a 400,000-baht loss to a friend.

120 arrested in underwear at Bangkok hotel party

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

British man’s Thai-high trip goes up in smoke at Manchester customs

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. Foreign tourist arrivals in Thailand from Jan. 1 to Dec. 1 this year reached 32,020,169 visitors, generating approximately 1.5 trillion baht in revenue, the Tourism and Sports ministry reported last week.

China ranked as the top source of tourists with 6,214,226 visitors, followed by Malaysia (4,506,898), India (1,915,152), South Korea (1,685,600), and Russia (1,503,312). The construction incident on Rama II Road has claimed the lives of six people, as rescue and recovery efforts are expected to take two to three days. Authorities have temporarily closed the road and diverted traffic and advised motorists to avoid the area.

Samut Sakhon Gov. Narit Niramaivong and other key officials, including Lt. Col. Santhiti Thammajai from the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, inspected the site. “Our priority is clearing the debris and restoring traffic on this vital route, which serves many commuters,” said Narit.
