The Bank of Thailand is expediting efforts to unlock the financial transactions of suspended accounts affected by investigations into mules. In collaboration with relevant agencies, the regulator is upgrading its operational processes to better distinguish between mule accounts and legitimate ones, allowing the public to transfer money as usual.

Under the new system, banks will be able to unlock suspended transactions within one day, or as quickly as 3–4 hours per case, compared with the previous 3–7 days. Major road works begin at Hua Hin airport tunnel

Major road works have started around Hua Hin Airport as part of a year-long upgrade to prepare the airport for international operations. The project, which began on Aug. 31 and is scheduled to run until Aug. 23, 2026, includes expanding the vehicle and railway tunnels and improving runway safety areas to meet Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) standards.

The construction will see the vehicle tunnel expanded by up to 41.5 meters and the railway tunnel by up to 38.5 meters. Runway safety areas will also be upgraded to enhance the airport’s ability to handle international flights. Continued …

Prachuap Khiri Khan tourism statistics show slight growth

Prachuap Khiri Khan welcomed more than 6.8 million visitors between January and July, according to the latest figures from the provincial office of Tourism and Sports. The number represents a slight year-on-year increase of 0.77%.

Thailand foreign visitors drop 7.16% y/y in first eight months of 2025

Thailand’s foreign tourist arrivals this year up to the end of August fell 7.16% from the same period a year earlier, the Tourism Ministry said yesterday. There were 21.9 million foreign visitors during the period, with China the largest source market with 3.1 million arrivals.

In August, the state planning agency cut its forecast for foreign tourist arrivals this year to 33 million from 37 million. There was a record of nearly 40 million visitors in 2019, before the pandemic. – Reuters

Bangkok hotel occupancy declines

Bangkok Bank enforcing stricter account verification

Bangkok Bank has recently begun enforcing stricter account verification requirements, in line with new government directives aimed at boosting security and cracking down on cybercrime and scams. Customers have been asked to visit their branch with identification documents, such as a passport, to verify their account details.

However, many foreign customers have reported that their accounts were suspended — leaving them unable to withdraw cash, transfer funds, or pay bills. Even after completing the verification process, some expats have reported their accounts being frozen for up to seven days.

Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

The goal here from his wife, also a friend, is just to get any information anyone might have who might have seen him, or, if luck is on our side, who might know where he is.

Hua Hin Food Fest 2025 returns to Hua Don Beach this weekend

The Hua Hin Food Fest 2025 is set to return from today through Sunday, bringing a variety of culinary offerings and entertainment to Hua Don Beach in Khao Takiab.

Thai-EU FTA talks unlikely to conclude this year

The Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) admitted yesterday that talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the European Union are unlikely to conclude this year, despite earlier expectations. DTN Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said obstacles remain, with many sensitive and complex issues still under negotiation.

Chotima explained that negotiations, which began in 2023, cover 20 groups of trade and services across 24 sections. So far, only seven sections have been agreed upon, leaving 17 sections unresolved, mostly concerning market access and investment. Continued …

“It’s good news about the return of the Butterworth service. Further good news would be investment in rolling stock. With the huge outlay on the new track/Hua Hin station, it would’ve been good if some more money had gone into those ancient screeching trains (one is just going by now and the noise is deafening!), and carriages which have seen better days.” – AB

Editor: Patience. The Thai government has limited resources, with all areas of the country clamoring for investment of one kind or another. PKK is just one small piece of the overall equation, and, frankly, other areas could use the money more than this area. And new rolling stock has been purchased, just not for the southern route – yet. (Of course, as the article below illustrates, there always seems to be money for tourism needs.)

Hua Hin has requested more than 400 million baht in funding for the 2026 fiscal year, with a significant portion aimed at upgrading the city’s water supply infrastructure.

For almost 20 years, Rambo the tiger lived in a concrete cell in Thailand, sentenced to life imprisonment for tourists’ entertainment. The first thing he did upon being rescued was take a swim. For five blissful hours, the Bengal tiger – a species known to love water – experienced the joy of swimming for the first time in his life.

When a 200-pound Mekong giant catfish turned up at a flooded train station in the Thai city of Chiang Mai last year, it stopped people in their tracks. Seeing a six-to-seven-foot long fish trapped outside a ticket booth was a surreal sight — and it raised an obvious question: Where did it come from?

It certainly did not come from its natural habitat — the Mekong River, which runs through several Southeast Asian countries. The critically endangered species is one of the world’s largest freshwater fish and has become vanishingly rare in the wild in Thailand. Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at 9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.
