New airline with prop planes eyes Hua Hin for domestic flights

Ezy Airlines has announced its plans to expand air travel to and from Hua Hin and across southern Thailand. The airline aims to begin operations in the third quarter of 2025.

Keeping pets safe

Due to the unusually high temperatures this year, people are not the only ones suffering, as pets also have difficulty dealing with hot weather. Recently, a viral video of a French bulldog collapsing because of heat stroke raised concerns.

The owner of the dog told media over the phone that she had let the dog out to urinate. After the dog returned, it was panting and then collapsed and had seizures. She later took the dog to see a vet and it was said to have suffered from heat stroke. Continued …

Mule accounts targeted with new mobile banking curbs

The telecom regulator says access to mobile banking accounts where the names of the account holders and phone subscribers are different will require case-by-case permission, as a clampdown begins on the use of mule accounts by fraudsters.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission said on Monday the government had a policy to stop banking service access from mobile phones that were not registered in the name of the mobile bank account holder. Continued …

Government expedites waterway upgrades

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives is moving to expedite the waterways improvement project, which it planned to honor His Majesty the King’s sixth cycle anniversary, which falls on July 28, government spokeswoman Kenika Ounjit said yesterday.

Under Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Thamanat Prompow, she said, the ministry is overseeing 72 projects to mark His Majesty’s 72nd birthday this year, which include dredging 24 irrigation canals and 21 reservoirs across the country, as well as the construction of 27 new water sources and irrigation systems. Vice mayor gunned down in ambush on Pattani highway

In a brazen attack on Phetkasem Road, the vice mayor of a tambon administrative organization (TAO) in Khok Pho district, Pattani province, was brutally murdered by suspected insurgents Friday evening.

Witnesses reported that 57-year-old Nan Kongsomboon was ambushed by two men on a motorcycle as he was returning home after tending to his cattle. Migrant workers take over house of Thai-Australian couple in Korat

A Thai woman and her Australian husband filed a police complaint after a group of migrant workers took over their house in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat.

20 in intensive care after turbulence scare

Fifty-eight of the passengers injured when Singapore Airlines Flight SQ321 encountered severe turbulence en route from London to Singapore yesterday are still being treated in hospital, including 20 who are in intensive care units (ICU), according to a statement from Bangkok’s Samitivej Srinagarind Hospital.

Baht fundamentals have deteriorated

Uncertainty surrounding the U.S. interest rate trajectory, alongside geopolitical tensions, underpin much of the baht’s weakness so far this year, according to BMI officials. “We think the baht will trade sideways and reach 37.50 to. the U.S. dollar by year-end once these temporary factors subside,” they predict.

Group seeks gain from US-China trade war

The U.S. recently imposed very high tariffs on Chinese products, notably electric vehicles and semiconductors, which will cause China to concentrate on expanding its EV manufacturing within Asia, with Thailand poised to become a key export hub, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

President Joe Biden’s administration cited Beijing’s unfair trade practices for the hike, with EV tariffs to be quadrupled to a 100% rate, solar cells and semiconductors doubled to a 50% rate, and certain steel and aluminum imports from China raised to 25%, more than triple the current level, according to media reports. Decapitated body found in sea off Cha Am beach

Yesterday, local fishermen reported a heavily decaying, headless body floating in the sea near the Cha Am Beach viewpoint, approximately one kilometer from the shore.

Thai mango exports more than double in first three months

Thailand’s exports of fresh mango in the first quarter this year increased 130%, to about 1.6 billion baht, compared to the same period last year, while exports of sticky rice increased 13%, to about one billion baht during the same period.

Caps on diesel, cooking gas, power to continue for now

The Cabinet has given the go-ahead to extend three subsidies in a bid to continue easing people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

The measures are: Capping the retail price of diesel at 33 baht per lit; capping cooking gas at 423 baht per 15kg canister; capping electricity at 19.05 baht per unit for households using less than 300 units per month. Continued …

Hua Hin suffers agricultural losses following Tuesday’s storm

A powerful summer storm on Tuesday left a trail of destruction across several districts, with local farms, particularly durian orchards, bearing the brunt of the damage. Tuesday’s storm was the first significant rainfall the region has seen in nearly five months. #huahin

Much of Thailand will again experience thundershowers, with gusty winds and isolated heavy rains today due to the confluence of southeasterly and southerly winds prevailing over the upper part of the country, the Thai Meteorological Department said this morning.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 8am today that 11 provinces were facing red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 82.1 to 158.8 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Households spend most on travel, petrol, phone bills

Thai household spending on consumer goods in April averaged 18,187 baht, with the biggest expenses being on public transport, petrol and mobile phones, according to a Commerce Ministry survey.

Trang Tourist Boat Overturns, One Fatality

Foreigners and their overseas income: what next?

More than three months after “assessable” foreign income became taxable, many of Thailand’s expats are still swimming in a sea of uncertainty. Lots of advice online, but few definite answers. Senior officers from the Revenue (Department) have said little of late, although there has been a half-promise to the Swiss ambassador in a televised interview to print the tax identification forms in English as well as in Thai.

There is a view among some Thai lawyers that we must wait until July for clarification on nitty-gritty issues such as double taxation treaties and the tax status of pensions. By that time, some expats will have passed 180 days of minimum residence necessary for tax liability in this category. Continued …

Despite a return of a current account surplus and the prospect of a better economy in 2024, the baht on Wednesday again broke theBt37 barrier point against the dollar. Today it was ฿37.15. It came after the Bank of Thailand intervened to temporarily keep from breaching it.

The baht has been falling since the beginning of 2024. The reasons, of course, are complex, but essentially there is a lack of confidence, at this time, in the kingdom’s economic planning. Investor capital is moving out. With its aging population, jaded industrial base and a decades-long failure to address serious structural problems, the current government insists it can spend its way out of the problem. Central bank calls for review of digital wallet scheme

The Bank of Thailand (BoT) has suggested that the government restrict the digital wallet cash benefit scheme to around 15 million financially vulnerable individuals, instead of the planned 50 million in its proposal. According to the BoT, this modification in the plan, costing 150 billion baht, can be effective immediately.

Japanese account for more than half of total foreign investments in Q1

Thailand received nearly 36 billion baht in investments from foreigners during the first quarter of the year, the Department of Business Development said.

Japanese investors topped the list, accounting for 19.006 billion of the 35.902 billion baht invested by foreigners, or more than half, Oramon Sapthaweetham, director-general of the department, said. A total of 178 foreign nationals had been permitted to invest in businesses during January-March under the Foreign Business Act BE 2542 (1999). Home building market set to grow despite challenges

Thailand’s home building market is showing signs of growth this year, even though rising costs, a labor shortage, and buyer sentiment remain major challenges, Worawut Kanchanakul, president of the Home Builders Assn., said on Tuesday. His confidence stems from the government’s approval on April 9 of new measures aimed at boosting the country’s real-estate sector.

The measures include lowering property registration and transfer fees, extending a reduction in mortgage fees to properties valued up to 7 million baht, providing tax breaks for individuals who build their own homes, and raising the value threshold of properties developed by companies eligible for the Board of Investment’s tax incentive from 1 million baht to 1.5 million baht. Car production down 23.1% y/y in March

Car production in Thailand dropped 23.08% in March from a year earlier to 138,331 units, the Federation of Thai Industries said today.

Eight police officers in Nakhon Pathom have been suspended from the force following accusations of attempting to extort 200,000 baht from the owner of a chicken processing factory. The scandalous affair unfolded when the factory owner, enraged by the officers’ demands, aired her grievances on social media and filed a complaint with provincial authorities.

The factory owner, who documented her ordeal on the Sai Mai Must Survive Facebook page and with local police, recounted a troubling encounter with the law enforcers. Digital wallet scheme approved in principle by Cabinet

Songkran generated 140 billion baht over 21 days

Sudawan Wangsupakitkosol, minister of tourism and sports, reported that the Economics Tourism and Sports Division has summarized the latest information on Thai and foreign tourists during the Songkran Festival 2024, from April 1-21.

Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, the president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), revealed that Thailand is officially entering the low season, saying Thai tourism operators may struggle with low incoming tourists after the Songkran holidays.

Arrivals set to soar amid holidays in East Asia

Chinese and Japanese tourists are expected to flock to Thailand during the Labor Day holiday and Japan’s Golden Week, driving arrivals to 996,000, up 29% from the corresponding period last year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
