Bluport adds convention hall to Hua Hin mall

Minibus passengers sought help from Nakhon Pathom Highway Police after the drug-addicted driver drove dangerousl  on a trip from the southern province of Prachuap Khiri Khan to Bangkok.

Officers from Nakhon Pathom Highway Police Station yesterday were alerted that the Bangkok-Prachuap Khiri Khan minibus driver was driving at a very high speed, and the vehicle was swerving dangerously throughout the journey. Thailand’s COVID-19 Surge Expected to Peak in July

Thailand faces a significant surge in COVID-19 cases, with infections expected to peak in July, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, chief of Thailand’s Disease Control Department. The country reported 3,256 hospital admissions and 16 fatalities between June 23-29, highlighting an alarming rise in cases.

Out of these recent hospital admissions, 709 patients suffered from severe lung infections, and 336 required ventilators. Bangkok-Vientiane train service begins July 19

A new international train service connecting Bangkok and Vientiane in Laos will begin services on July 19, the State Railway of Thailand announced on Wednesday.

A mix of factors such as the rapid technology transition, global polarization and economic slowdown have plunged the Thai business sector in a crisis more severe than what it encountered during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Marketing Association of Thailand said on Wednesday.

Contractions in auto, property sectors a blow to economic expansion

Contractions in the automotive and property sectors have severely impacted the Thai economy in the first half of the year and prompted several institutes to adjust downward their estimates on economic expansion this year, the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) announced.

In its monthly meeting to discuss the economic situation on Wednesday, the JSCCIB cut its estimation of Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) expansion in 2024 by 0.3%-0.4% to 2.2%-2.7% year on year. Continued …

Condo association warns of crisis in property sector

The Thai property sector will face challenges in meeting sales targets this year due to a decline in demand and purchasing power, Thai Condominium Assn. President Prasert Taedullayasatit said on Tuesday.

He referred to the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and its impact on property prices, as financial institutions and asset management companies turned to offering non-performing assets at cheaper rates than the original sale prices. “The reason behind the decline in property prices during the Tom Yum Kung crisis was a weakening baht that triggered an increase in the debt burden among business entrepreneurs and banks,” he said. World Bank urges Thailand to invest in infrastructure, green economy

The World Bank has advised the Thai government to boost investment in reviving aging infrastructure and strengthening the green economy, to help drive the country’s economic potential beyond 2.7% growth in the medium term.

The bank forecasts Thai GDP growth of 2.4% in 2024 and 2.8% in 2025. The government’s planned digital wallet initiative is not included in the baseline forecast, but it could potentially enhance near-term growth if implemented, Kiatipong Ariyapruchya, a senior economist for Thailand at the World Bank, told an ecnomic seminar on Wednesday. Why are so many foreigners residing in Thailand problematic types?

I can’t help but notice all the negative aspects about many of the expats I’ve come across in Thailand. It’s disheartening to see that so many foreigners seem to fall into one of several categories: unpleasant, criminal, or otherwise problematic.

Firstly, the number of rude and disrespectful expats is staggering. It’s as if some people left their manners at the airport. From obnoxious behavior in public to a complete lack of respect for Thai culture and people, these individuals don’t add anything positive to the backdrop. Heavy flooding after torrential rains in Phuket

Heavy rainfall in Phuket disrupted flights and caused widespread flooding across the tourist island province. Cooking gas subsidies extended to Sept 30

The price of cooking gas, also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), will remain fixed at 423 baht per 15-kilogram cylinder until Sept. 30 as energy officials have agreed to extend subsidies from the Oil Fuel Fund.

The current LPG subsidy is scheduled to end on Sunday, prompting the Energy Policy Administration Committee (Epac) to meet on Thursday to review the impact of higher cooking gas prices on the cost of living, said Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga, who chaired the meeting. Continued …

Thai Banks Are the Top Suppliers of Financial Services to Myanmar’s Military: UN Expert

Thai banks have become the main supplier of international financial services for Myanmar’s military government, enabling its purchases of goods and equipment used to carry out its increasingly bloody war against pro-democracy resistance forces and armed ethnic minority groups, a UN expert said in a report issued Wednesday.

The report by Tom Andrews, the UN special rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, tracks how that country’s ruling military council has been able to continue procuring arms by shifting suppliers of financial services and military hardware as previous sources have been blocked by sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and other states. Bank of Thailand sees economic stability from Q3

The Bank of Thailand (BOT) expects the economy to start stabilizing from the third quarter thanks to accelerated growth and potential to meet the 2.6% expansion target this year. Senior BOT executives voiced these optimistic views at the second Monetary Policy Forum for this year on Wednesday.

New foreign business investment rises 58% in first 5 months

Investment by new foreign businesses rose 58% in the first five months of this year compared with the same period last year, the Department of Business Development announced on Tuesday.

“It is upsetting the Thai tax authorities want to double tax expatriate retirees, etc. As most of us live on a fixed income, it is already difficult to pay for food, rent, utilities, etc.

“Many of us pay heavily to support a Thai family and outside relatives with consistent monetary support. Now we are to be burdened with additional taxation? In many countries where we originated from, we are already taxed heavily and every dollar counts.

“This new idea of double taxing expatriates will have unintended consequences for Thai revenue aspirations. Many retired people will not be able to pay more tax than they already are already paying in their home countries. Or, even if they are able, they will deeply resent being double taxed. This idea of double taxation will have unintended consequences for the Thai economy.

“Many of us who have bought homes and condos will sadly be leaving Thailand. Some of us who support entire Thai families will reluctantly be doing the same. Those who are renting homes or apartments can leave more easily. The Thai economy will be impacted by the exodus of retired expats. This is an ill conceived idea but I am sure this Thai double tax will continue to be enacted by the Thai tax enforcers.

“Many foreigners who have lived in Thailand for years or even decades will soon leave Thailand, and not look back. It feels like the Thai government, by double taxing us, does not want foreigner retirees to live in Thailand. If that is their goal then they will surely succeed.” – Left Already

(Editor note: Scores of countries already have tax agreements with Thailand that will protect expats living in Thailand from the planned tax. The author apparently hails from a country that does not have such a tax treaty with Thailand. Expats from those countries will definitely feel the effects.)

Lots of rain forecast for Hua Hin

The Thailand Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning, forecasting heavy rain for Hua Hin over the next week.

Thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the area, with heavy rainfall in some places such as Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phatthalung. Temperatures will range from 23-27°C at the minimum and 31-34°C at the maximum.

Thailand mulls allowing foreigners to buy 75% of condo units

The Thai Cabinet has tasked the Interior Ministry with amending the Condominium Act to increase the foreign ownership limit in condominium projects from 49% to 75%. Additionally, they have been directed to modify the Land Act to allow foreigners to lease land for 99 years, up from the current 50 years.

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul indicated on Friday that the Land Act requires minimal changes. The existing law already permits a 50-year lease with an option to extend for another 50 years. Thailand has approved the collection of 7% value-added tax (VAT) on imported goods sold for less than 1,500 baht (US$40.93) from July to December, a finance ministry official said on Friday.

An investigation into officers involved with the three missing seized oil-smuggling vessels is underway after a leaked chat showed a connection between some police and the mastermind of the oil smuggling gang.
