Cha-am Drug Party Raid: 52 Arrested at Pool Villa

Police and local officials raided a pool villa in Cha-am, 52 young men and women were allegedly holding a drug-fueled party in the early hours yesterday.

The joint operation, led by Provincial Police Region 7 officers, Cha-am police, and district officials, uncovered a large gathering aged between 16 and 28. Officers seized quantities of ecstasy, ketamine, methamphetamine pills, e-cigarettes, and 30 mobile phones as evidence. All suspects were taken into custody for questioning at Cha-am Police Station. Prachuap Khiri Khan Gastronomy Festival This Weekend

Chiva-Som Hua Hin marks International Mangrove Day with mangrove plantings

Chiva-Som Hua Hin observed International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem on July 26 with a mangrove planting initiative in Thailand.

The team from Chiva-Som planted 500 mangrove trees at the Krailart Niwate Mangrove Ecosystem Preservation Project, located a short distance from the resort. Ministry: GDP growth to exceed 2.2%

Central bank sees Thai growth slowing next year

The Bank of Thailand expects the country’s economic growth to fall below its potential next year, weighed down by sluggishness in several sectors. According to minutes of the Aug. 13 Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting released yesterday, the Thai economy is also projected to slow in the second half of 2025.

Niphon  nyamanee, former deputy Interior minister, former Songkhla Provincial Administrative Organization president and eight-term MP, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Chinese investors from Chengdu to establish an electric motorcycle factory in southern Thailand.

The project, which will seek investment incentives from Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI), aims to assemble electric motorcycles for the domestic market, beginning in the southern provinces. Hua Hin City Municipality will begin installing a new raw water pipeline along Sarosong Road today, with partial road closures expected until Sept. 15. Drivers are advised to avoid the area where possible to minimize delays.

The Cha-am–Huai Sai Dairy Cooperative in Phetchaburi Province has warned of a mounting crisis in the school milk program, with excess milk production threatening the livelihoods of dairy farmers across more than 10 provinces in central Thailand.

Somkuan Sawangarom, manager of the cooperative, revealed that the cooperative purchases approximately 23 tons of raw milk daily from local farmers. While part of this milk is used for school milk production, a significant portion remains unsold, forcing the cooperative to sell some milk at reduced prices and risking financial losses this year. A satellite-to-phone service using Globalstar’s low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites is expected to be available in Thailand at the end of 2026. The move will benefit satellite operator Thaicom, the local exclusive partner of Globalstar in providing LEO satellite services in Thailand, according to Thaicom chief executive Patompob Suwansiri.

Retail petrol prices across Thailand have gone up, with benzene and gasohol now 0.40 baht more per liter after the adjustment took effect yesterday.

Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

The goal here from his wife, also a friend, is just to get any information anyone might have who might have seen him, or, if luck is on our side, who might know where he is.

The Department of Trade Negotiations (DTN) admitted yesterday that talks on a free trade agreement (FTA) between Thailand and the European Union are unlikely to conclude this year, despite earlier expectations. DTN Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said obstacles remain, with many sensitive and complex issues still under negotiation.

Expat News reader makes plea for missing friend

I’ve been a subscriber for a number of years, and I’ve lived in Thailand for a couple of decades. Decided to retire down here over the last few years.

A friend of mine, a friend of many of ours, James, didn’t return home Tuesday in the afternoon. He had lived in Thailand for decades, he wasn’t the sort to cause trouble or get into it.

The goal here from his wife, also a friend, is just to get any information anyone might have who might have seen him, or, if luck is on our side, who might know where he is.

Bangkok Bank enforcing stricter account verification

Bangkok Bank has recently begun enforcing stricter account verification requirements, in line with new government directives aimed at boosting security and cracking down on cybercrime and scams. Customers have been asked to visit their branch with identification documents, such as a passport, to verify their account details.

However, many foreign customers have reported that their accounts were suspended — leaving them unable to withdraw cash, transfer funds, or pay bills. Even after completing the verification process, some expats have reported their accounts being frozen for up to seven days.

Other banks are expected to adopt similar measures soon, as part of broader changes to Thailand’s banking and SIM card registration systems. – HHT

Marine and coastal conservation project launched in Hua Hin

Ratchaburi Rajabhat University has launched a marine and coastal conservation project at the Blue Crab Bank in Khao Takiab to promote environmental awareness and sustainable tourism.

The project, opened yesterday by Associate Professor Napaporn Naktim, vice president of the Wang Klai Kangwon Campus of Rajamangala University of Technology Rattanakosin, brought together faculty members and first-year students from the faculty of hotel and tourism industry. Continued …

Hua Hin elderly health project tackles dementia prevention

Hua Hin City Municipality has launched the “Bright Age, Away from Dementia” project, aimed at promoting health and improving the quality of life among elderly residents.

The initiative was officially opened on Tuesday at the Golden Sea Hotel in Hua Hin, with Sinat O-iam, deputy governor of Prachuap Khiri Khan, presiding over the ceremony. Young elephant dies in PKK after attack by larger elephant

A young female elephant from the Pa La-U area was found dead in the Huai Sat Yai reservoir after being fatally injured in an attack by a larger elephant, officials confirmed yesterday.

The carcass was discovered in the “Sao Ha” reservoir area in Ban Khon Nom Pattana, Huai Sat Yai, outside the boundaries of Kaeng Krachan National Park. A joint team of park officials, administrative officers, police, soldiers, veterinarians from the Department of National Parks, and members of the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Thailand inspected the site. New rules for SIM cards will require facial recognition

The government has announced stricter measures for SIM card registration to combat rising online fraud, following cases in which criminals have exploited SIM-swap scams to steal from victims.

The system will apply to all new mobile subscribers, both prepaid and post-paid, as well as existing users replacing SIM cards while keeping the same number. The technology verifies identity in real time through facial recognition, similar to banking applications. This prevents scammers from using photos, videos, or 3D masks to impersonate others, a loophole that previously enabled fraudulent SIM registration, he said. Continued …

Jay Fai Fined 2,000 Baht for Unclear Menu Pricing Dispute

The Ministry of Commerce has issued a 2,000 baht fine to Michelin-starred street food vendor Jay Fai following a pricing complaint by a Thai YouTuber.

The controversy began when Pitchaya “Peachii” Chaychana, a YouTuber residing in the UK, visited Jay Fai’s establishment in Bangkok and was astonished by the price of her crab omelette. Although the menu listed the dish at 1,500 baht, Peachii and her friends were charged 4,000 baht. The difference, they were told, was due to the substitution of premium crab meat. Continued …

Wild Elephants Kill Villager in Khon Kaen

A group of wild elephants entered agricultural land in Si Chomphu District, Khon Kaen Province, and fatally attacked a local villager during the night.

Police from Si Chomphu District, together with volunteers from the Sattha Tham Si Chomphu Charity Assn., discovered the body floating face-down in a pond in Dong Lan subdistrict. Authorities reported multiple injuries, including bruises across his body, broken arms and legs, and severe facial lacerations. Continued …

Officials discover 20 preserved bodies at AIDS treatment temple

Officials from the Ministry of Public Health raided Phra Bat Nampu Temple in the central province of Lop Buri, where they discovered 20 bodies of AIDS patients illegally preserved and displayed in a museum within the temple.

Phra Bat Nampu Temple, also known as the AIDS temple, has long been running donation campaigns to raise funds for underprivileged AIDS patients. Many donors chose to support this temple, believing their contributions would directly benefit the patients. Continued …

Bitten by bravery: Cobra strikes back in Phuket

A Thai security guard in Phuket ended up needing hospital treatment after being bitten by a highly venomous king cobra moments after capturing it with his bare hands.

Inflation statistics and household reality

Thais are experiencing increasing financial stress from the rising cost of living, even as official inflation data suggests a period of deflation, according to a new nationwide survey by Marketbuzzz.

Chinese goods expected to flood Thailand over next three years

Ath Pisalvanich, an independent scholar and specialist in international and ASEAN economics, explained that the Trump Tariff will make it more difficult for China to export to the US, forcing Chinese goods to be redirected to other markets such as ASEAN, the Middle East and Africa.

Tourism Minister proposes Bt700 million budget for free domestic flights

Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong plans to request a Bt700-million budget from the Cabinet for a domestic flight giveaway initiative aimed at attracting at least 200,000 international tourists to various destinations across Thailand.

Sorawong said yesterday the Ministry of Tourism and Sports will submit a proposal to the Cabinet next week for the allocation of the budget to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Mother’s Day Weekend Travel Boosts Economy with 13.75 Billion Baht Revenue

Thailand experienced a tourism surge during Mother’s Day weekend, with 3.16 million trips contributing 13.75 billion baht. The average hotel occupancy rate reached 66%, with Thai nationals comprising 41% of travelers.

The central region led in trips (898,000), followed by the northeast (609,600) and east (600,500). Bangkok topped revenue (3.41 billion baht), trailed by the south (2.79 billion) and east (2.62 billion). Popular destinations included Bangkok, Kanchanaburi, and Chonburi. Airports of Thailand revises Suvarnabhumi Airport plan, targets 120 million passengers

The Airports of Thailand (AoT) has revised the Suvarnabhumi Airport master plan, targeting a development project that can accommodate up to 120 million passengers per year, as it eyes the east expansion project tender next year.

Foreigner drowns, another critical at Phuket’s Kata Beach

    Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Drug Gang Busted in Hua Hin Villa

Police have arrested members of the infamous “Sergeant M16” drug trafficking network, a syndicate accused of moving more than 10 million methamphetamine pills, during a raid on a pool villa in Hua Hin.

The operation, led by Bangkok Metropolitan Police Bureau investigators and Romsai police, resulted in the capture of four high-value suspects, each carrying a government-issued bounty of 1.5 million baht. Thailand Tightens Mobile Banking to Curb Scams

The Bank of Thailand has announced strict new mobile banking transfer limits to combat rising financial fraud, capping daily transfers at 50,000 baht for children under 15 and seniors over 65 opening new accounts.

The Thai Navy’s mine action unit has discovered a mobile phone in the Phu Makua area of Si Sa Ket province, which the Thai military said contained video clips and still images of Cambodian soldiers planting new anti-personnel landmines in violation of the global ban.

Thais are embracing artificial intelligence (AI) like never before, with new research showing it’s become an “invisible” part of daily life — but concerns over fairness, bias, and safety are growing just as fast.

Thai Hotels Association to challenge nationwide 400-baht minimum wage in court

Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun, president of the Thai Hotels Assn. (THA), has revealed that the association plans to file a petition with the Administrative Court to review the legality of the National Wage Committee’s announcement on minimum wage rates (No. 14), issued on June 17.

The announcement stipulates a nationwide minimum wage of 400 baht per day for hotels and service businesses, effective from July 1, 2025, without regional or provincial variation. Thai industrial sentiment at three-year low

Thailand’s industrial sentiment index fell for a fifth straight month in July, hitting its lowest level in three years due to worries about the impact of tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said yesterday.

The FTI said its industrial sentiment index dropped to 86.6 in July from 87.7 in June. The index decreased to 87.7 in June from 88.1 in May. The survey was conducted before the United States set tariffs on Thai imports at 19%. Continued …

Cambodia’s border conflict with Thailand poses growing economic risks

Cambodia’s ongoing border conflict with Thailand is beginning to inflict significant economic costs, particularly in tourism, displaced communities, and remittance flows, according to an opinion article by Kosalthanan Neth, research fellow at the China-ASEAN Studies Center, Cam Tech University. The piece, titled “Economic consequences of Cambodia’s border conflict with Thailand”, was published on the Khmer Times website on Monday.

The analysis recalls the May 28 clash in the Emerald Triangle, where Cambodian and Thai soldiers confronted each other, leaving one Cambodian soldier dead and sharply escalating tensions. Rice farmers in line for Bt114-billion aid

The cabinet has approved 114 billion baht worth of aid for rice farmers, said deputy government spokesman Anukul Pruksanusak. The funding received the green light during the weekly cabinet meeting yesterday. The 114 billion baht will support rice farmers through two major assistance programs.

The first program provides direct financial aid of 1,000 baht per rai, capped at 10 rai per household, to help farmers cope with falling paddy prices. The scheme applies to both off-season (2025) and main-season (2025/2026) rice production. Continued …

The United States leads with a total wealth of US$163.117 trillion (around Bt5,289.8 trillion), reflecting its powerful and stable economy, cultural diversity, and global influence from New York City to its vast natural landscapes.

China holds second place with US$91.082 trillion (around Bt2,953.8 trillion), combining ancient history with rapid technological advancement. Free domestic flights for foreign tourists on agenda

Thailand is rolling out the red carpet with a generous offer of free domestic flights for 200,000 tourists, aiming to boost travel from September to November. Patong police stalled as ‘Arab’ tourist gang walks free

Patong Police are under mounting scrutiny as they continue to delay charges against six foreign tourists, described in official reports as “Arab,” who were allegedly involved in the brutal beating of a Thai motorbike rental operator. The attack, which took place on Aug. 10, left the victim hospitalized with a broken jaw and broken ribs.

The case only gained traction after a disturbing video of the assault went viral and landed on the desk of the national director-general of the Department of Provincial Administration, Nirat Phongsitthaworn. Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Thailand records 7% y/y drop in foreign visitors so far in 2025

Thailand’s foreign tourist arrivals from Jan. 1 to Aug. 17 fell 7% from the same period a year earlier, the Tourism and Sports Ministry said today. There were about 20.81 million foreign visitors during the period, it said. China was the largest source market, with 2.93 million visitors.

Yesterday, the National Economic and Social Development Council cut its forecast for foreign tourist arrivals this year to 33 million from 37 million. There was a record of nearly 40 million visitors in 2019, before the pandemic. Continued …

Most of us who come from “Western” countries, come from countries with varying immigration/visa policies/programmes (permanent migration (families, spouses, etc.) and temporary migration (student, tourist, work, etc.)). These policies/programmes change from time to time – they certainly have in Australia over the past 70-odd years of my life. One should expect changes in any country’s immigration/visa policies/programmes over time; Thailand is no different. The world is changing, and changing very quickly, and we must prepare and plan as best as possible for change. Thailand may require all citizens, foreign residents to file tax returns in 2027

Thailand is preparing to launch one of the most comprehensive tax overhauls in its modern history. Despite political instability, a border crisis with Cambodia, and fallout from the new US tariff regime, the Pheu Thai-led government is pressing ahead with reforms aimed at reshaping the country’s economic foundations.

At the center of the plan is a mandatory filing system requiring all adult citizens and businesses to submit annual tax returns by 2027. Foreign residents will also be included. Hua Hin Airport certification process moves closer to completion

Hua Hin Airport certification is moving forward, as the airport enters the final stages of Thailand’s nationwide program to standardize and improve aviation safety.

Following the recent certification of Phitsanulok and Krabi airports, the Department of Airports (DOA) confirmed that Hua Hin Airport is now in Phase 4 of the five-step certification process. NESDC revises 2025 GDP growth to 2%, Q2 expands 2.8%

Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), today released Thailand’s economic performance for the second quarter of 2025 and the updated outlook for the year.

Thai banking, health insurance issues leading to DTV’s increasing popularity

The crackdown on tourists vainly trying to open Thai bank accounts has resulted in a surge of applications for the Destination Thailand Visa. That’s according to visa officers in Thai embassies, especially in nearby countries such as Laos and the Philippines.

Although no regular government figures are published, over 120,000 DTVs have been issued by about 70 Thai diplomatic posts abroad in the first year of operation. A key attraction of DTV is that applicants do not need a Thai bank account to show the liquid asset bond of 500,000 baht (US$ 16,000) since financial institutions abroad are acceptable depositaries. While Vietnam recently announced a visa-free scheme for citizens of 12 countries to boost tourism, Thailand’s position as one of the world’s top travel destinations remains strong thanks to its already abundant attractions and infrastructure.

The Vietnamese government will allow nationals from Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland to enter Vietnam without a visa for tourism purposes, effective o Aug. 14, 2028. Community tourism in Thap Sakae showcases fishing and coconut culture

Community tourism in Thap Sakae is giving visitors the chance to experience local life first-hand through a new route developed by the Ban Thung Pradu Community Tourism Enterprise. E-ticketing coming to six Thai marine parks in October

E-ticketing will be introduced at six Thai marine national parks from mid-October, allowing visitors to book and pay for admission online, according to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP).

EV sale soar to 18% share as Thai car market edges up

Thailand’s automotive market in 2025 continues to show only a slight decline compared with 2024, but the outlook is improving, with annual sales expected to reach around 600,000 units, up from 570,000 last year.

The electric vehicle (EV) sector, however, is expanding prominently. In the first seven months of 2025, EV registrations reached 66,000 units, almost equaling the full-year total of 67,000 units in 2024. Zelensky, European leaders head to US for talks on peace deal terms

Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.
