No alcohol sales tomorrow

The sale of alcohol will be banned on Sunday to observe the end of Buddhist Lent. The ban begins at midnight tonightand ends midnight Sunday. Alcohol sales are not allowed at restaurants, bars, pubs, hotels, convenience stores, and supermarkets, although you can still buy at duty-free shops in airports. Violators can be fined up to 10,000 baht, a maximum of six months in jail, or both.

Origins and Buddhist practices associated with the day marking end of Vassa

The end of Buddhist lent day is celebrated as a holy day on Aashvin full moon of the lunar month. It marks the end of the three lunar months of Vassa, sometimes called “Pavarana day”. The day has religious significance in some Asian countries where Theravada Buddhism is practiced.

Vassa is the three-month annual retreat observed by Theravada Buddhists. It takes place during the wet season of Vassa, usually from July to October. Continued …

As smog season returns, can Thailand avert another health crisis?

Recent negotiations with Iran have gone smoothly, with the Palestinian militant group Hamas poised to release all Thai hostages immediately, according to Saiyid Sulaiman Husaini, leader of an association of Shia Muslims in Thailand.

US donates 12 patrol boats to combat crime and drug trafficking

On Oct. 27, at the headquarters of the 11th Riverine Police Command (RPC) in Nong Khai Province, Robert Godec, the United States ambassador to Thailand, and Police Lt. General Ratchan Suwanhawat, commander of the 11th RPC, jointly presided over the handover ceremony of 12 patrol boats to the Thai police.

The boats, valued at over 75 million Thai baht (approximately 2.15 million U.S. dollars), were provided by the United States government to support the Thai Riverine Police in their duty to safeguard the Mekong River border area, stretching from Chiang Rai Province to Ubon Ratchathani Province. Committed to strengthening communities and protecting the environment, Chevron Thailand Exploration and Production (CTEP), Chevron (Thailand) (CTL), and Star Petroleum Refining (SPRC) launched the “Foster Future Forests” project, in conjunction with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR), Rayong provincial government, other government agencies, academic institutions, and local communities in Rayong.

The project’s objective is to initiate ecological restoration at a 100-rai under-developed area of the Phra Chedi Klang Nam mangrove forests, situated in Pak Nam subdistrict, Mueang district, Rayong province, starting with the expansion of green space to aid in carbon sequestration. Continued …

Overstaying Indians Who Clashed With Phuket Officials Have Lions In Their Villa

Police from Provincial Police Region 8, Choeng Thale Police Station, and Phuket Immigration Police announced yesterday that Indian residents attacked three immigration officials who requested a search of their luxury villa on a hill in the Laem Sing area, Choeng Thale subdistrict, Thalang District, Phuket Province, injuring them. The Indians were arrested and prosecuted.

The inquiry revealed that this group of suspects are Indians. The wife of the leader is from Ukraine. Three months ago, they came to rent and buy land for a luxury villa for 500 million baht, with an area of at least 10 rai, and they lived as a family of more than 20 people, with a Thai housekeeper and a Thai gardener. Legal casinos and gambling in Thailand being weighed carefully

Thailand’s leaders are considering plans put forward last year for legalizing gambling and casinos in the Kingdom. In September, Deputy Prime Minister Somsak Thepsutin came out in favor of the move and has promised to bring the matter to cabinet.

By and large, public opinion is hostile to the prospect, as are many experts, given the history of gambling in the country and the social ills it creates. There is also concern that the move may send the wrong signal as the new government seeks to broaden the country’s investor appeal and base and become a “good” global player. Continued …

A continuous rainfall weather forecast has been issued today for 48 provinces by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), with the capital Bangkok included. Thai death toll in Israel conflict reaches 33, repatriation efforts underway

The ongoing conflict in Israel has seen the death toll rise to 33 for Thai workers, with an additional 18 injured, as announced by Foreign Affairs Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara on Wednesday. Digital wallet rules ease debt fears

Finance Ministry cuts 2023 growth outlook to 2.7% as exports decline

The Ministry of Finance today cut its 2023 economic growth forecast to 2.7% from 3.5% seen earlier, due to weaker exports and lower government consumption.

Anantasila Beach Resort Hua Hin is hosting two month-long events, promising both local and international visitors a unique experience.

The first is the Contento Beach Anantasila, a pop-up collaboration with The Beach at Anantasila. Two killed, two injured in violent brawl over a woman

A violent brawl over a woman led to the deaths of two individuals and the injuries of two others in Prachinburi province. The violent brawl incident took place in front of a residential building where the victims were drinking alcohol. The police were able to apprehend one suspect at midnight today.

Thai exports at US$46 billion in first 7 months of 2023

Thai exports amounted to US$46.18 billion between January and July, driven by free trade agreements (FTAs), Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) Director-general Ronnarong Phoolpipat announced this week. The top five FTAs contributing to this figure were:

  1. ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA): The agreement’s total value was U$16.49 billion, accounting for 72.7% of its utilization. The sixth batch of Thai citizens evacuated from Israel touched down at Suvarnabhumi Airport at 6.34pm Tuesday on El Al flight LY085, which departed Tel Aviv earlier in the day.

Nongbua Lamphu native, Wiphawadee “Jaem” Vannachai, 40, became an overnight sensation on social media after a clip recording her heroic efforts to rescue Thai workers from Israeli war zones went viral.

Bangkok’s electric train flat fare drops to 20 baht, ridership soars by 90%

A surge of nearly 90% in ridership was recorded on Bangkok’s Red and Purple electric train lines Monday, following the introduction of a 20-baht flat fare.

State revenue outperforms target by 6.9%

For the first 11 months of fiscal 2023, government revenue exceeded its target by 6.9%, or 153 billion baht, achieving a treasury balance of 300 billion baht at the end of August, said Fiscal Policy Office Director-general Pornchai Thiraveja.

Pornchai said the government collected net revenue of 2.36 trillion baht for the first 11 months of fiscal 2023 (October 2022 to August 2023), an increase of 6.9%, an improvement on 4.9% growth recorded in the same period last year. Continued …

World’s biggest eyewear company opens new plant in Rayong

EssilorLuxottica, the world’s leading eyewear producer, officially opened a new plant in Rayong on Tuesday. The integrated ophthalmic lenses and frames manufacturing plant is part of the company’s 16-billion-baht investment to turn Thailand into its Southeast Asia manufacturing hub. The new factory is expected to create 6,000 jobs.

Hotels unable to improve room rates

Hotels in major destinations overall have been unable to improve the average daily room rate during the high season, due to the slow rebound of the mass market, according to the Thai Hotels Assn. (THA).

Sanpech Supabowornsthian, president of THA’s eastern chapter, said hotels in Pattaya and the eastern region previously wanted to offer rooms at the same rate as 2019’s level during the high season after seeing a healthy rebound in international tourism. Continued …

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

According to an announcement made in September covering additional amendments to reducing the value-added tax (VAT) rate as per Article 80 of the Revenue Code, Thailand’s VAT rate was reduced to 6.3% on the sale of goods, provision of services, or imports, effective Oct. 1, 2017, until Sept. 30, 2024.

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. Thai Air Asia will reduce direct flights from four to twice weekly between Chiang Mai, the gateway city to north Thailand and the beach resort town of Hua Hin on the Gulf of Thailand.

Premier Srettha Thavisin’s new Pheu Thai-led administration has already seen massive investment in Thailand’s short-term visa programs. For me, it started in Seattle, on Queen Anne Hill, where I sort of grew up. I tried to grow pansies in our front side rock garden. Do you know how much it rains there? My efforts in all that rain were abysmal and the early childhood disappointment of not seeing my pansies’ colorful faces kept me from gardening for years.

Work in progress viewable at Cha Am’s Mrigadayavan Palace

The Mrigadayavan Palace is opening its doors this weekend. The palace has been undergoing restoration since 2021 and is set to officially reopen in May 2024.

Today, the palace is open from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 4:30 pm. There is a 90-baht admission fee for adults. Lower fees are available for students, while young children and elderly can visit for a voluntary donation.

Government to trial 4 am closing for Thailand’s nightlife venues

The Thai government is working to identify pilot locations for a trial of late-night closing for the country’s nightlife. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul says his office is liaising with related parties to find locations where entertainment venues would be allowed to remain open until 4 am.

Hua Hin municipality commemorated its 86th anniversary with a merit-making ceremony on Monday. Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul led the ceremony, which was overseen by Phra Kru Wichitthamvibhat, the chief of Hua Hin District and the abbot of Wat Busayabunpot.

The Thai Revenue Department has explained more about the taxation of income overseas, which will affect both some foreigners and some Thai people.

The basic idea is, that when money is transferred into Thailand it should be taxed in Thailand if it is income. If the income has been received in another country and later within the same tax year is being transferred to the taxpayer’s account in Thailand, it must be taxed in Thailand. If Thailand has a double tax agreement with the country where the money comes from, the tax paid in that foreign country can be deducted in Thailand according to the rules in the double tax agreement. Two dead, five wounded in Siam Paragon shooting, suspect used modified BB gun

A Chinese tourist and a woman from Myanmar were killed at Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, by a teenager using a modified BB gun, according to Police Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. Some media reported a third death.

PM Puts Weapon Systems Procurement On Hold

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday suspended the procurement of any weapon systems during fiscal 2024, so that, he said, the government’s annual budget could be spent for optimum use.

The prime minister said he has instructed the Ministry of Defense to keep any otherwise-planned procurement of weapon systems and accessories on hold throughout fiscal 2024, beginning on Oct. 1, so an estimated 3.48 trillion baht budget worth of the taxpayer’s money will be used in optimum fashion. 13 Electric Poles Collapse During Installation, 12 Injuries, 2 Deaths

On Monday, Police Capt. Thongkham Phoyai, Saraburi Province, received a report that 13 14-meter-tall concrete poles with high voltage wires fell down during installation at the Ban Krua subdistrict, Ban Mo District. A rescue squad was urgently dispatched to aid the injured and send them to nearby hospitals.

Helmet heist: Foreign couple’s brazen theft to dodge checkpoint fines

A security camera caught a foreign couple stealing two motorcycle helmets from a post office welfare house in the northern province of Chiang Mai in a bid to avoid being fined at a police checkpoint.

Giant python crashes lunchtime in Yala

A giant python, almost 5 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms, caused a stir yesterday when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala. The reptile was discovered by the shop owner, Suhayna Beeing, who immediately alerted residents of the Gunung Janoang community, sparking panic and attracting a crowd of onlookers.

Suhayna noticed the giant python hiding under a pile of goods in his shop. The shop owner’s call for help was answered by Kanob, a local farmer and president of the local charity foundation. Weakening baht boosts Thailand’s exports and tourism

Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, pointed out yesterday that the weakening baht, despite its potential negative impact on energy import costs, is actually proving to be a boon for the country’s exports and tourism. The baht had earlier plummeted to an 11-month low against the U.S. dollar, trading at 37.095.

According to Srettha, who also holds the finance minister portfolio, this depreciation isn’t entirely detrimental. It has a favorable effect on the country’s exports and tourism sectors – key contributors to Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP). Tourism confidence in Thailand plummets amid economic jitters

The tourism confidence index in Thailand has taken a hit, with figures sliding from 91 in the same period of 2019 to 69 in the third quarter of this year, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT).

The third quarter’s number also represents a decline from 74 and 72 recorded in the first and second quarters of 2021, respectively.
