World Bank downgrades Thailand’s growth outlook to 2.4% due to declining exports

The World Bank revised down Thailand’s 2024 GDP growth forecast to 2.4% from 2.8%, while projecting a GDP expansion of 2.8% in 2025 for the country.

Country’s growth potential declining, says BoT chief

The country’s economic growth potential is expected to hover around the 3% mark for the next five years, a decline from the average of closer to 3.5% reported in the years before the Covid-19 pandemic, according to Bank of Thailand Gov. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput.

Southeast Asia will no longer be a safe haven for Chinese solar companies because the United States is about to introduce new tariffs on imports of solar cells and panels from the region, forcing them to seek alternative locations for overseas expansion.

After investigating imports of crystalline silicon photovoltaic cells, assembled into panels or not, from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam, the U.S. International Trade Commission said last month that there is a reasonable indication that the products are sold at less than fair value in the U.S. because they are subsidized by local governments. Fuel consumption decreases 0.4%

Thailand’s total fuel consumption dipped by 0.4% year-on-year to 157.1 million liters per day (MLD) between January and May, attributed to higher energy prices and the country’s economic slowdown, says the Department of Energy Business.

Madagascar lemurs, tortoises seized in Thai bust reveal reach of wildlife trafficking

In May, authorities in southern Thailand arrested six people for illegally transporting 48 lemurs and more than 1,200 critically endangered tortoises, all of which had reportedly been obtained from the wild in Madagascar.

The seizure is the latest in a string of illegal wildlife trade busts in Thailand. Red pandas, monitor lizards, snakes and parrots have been uncovered in similar incidents in the country in recent months, for instance. Thailand exported 221,092 tons of canned tuna during the first five months of 2024, an increase of 19.4% compared to the same period last year. The exports were valued at $978.56 million, a growth of 13.4%.

Tourism confidence low amid sluggish economy

The tourism confidence index remained below the benchmark in the second quarter, hampered by stagnant economic growth, though it improved from last year, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT).

Seized drug assets to fund addict rehabilitation in Thailand

New foreign business investment rises 58% in first 5 months

Investment by new foreign businesses rose 58% in the first five months of this year compared with the same period last year, the Department of Business Development announced on Tuesday.

Newly registered foreign firms rose 16% to 317 and invested a combined 71.702 billion baht in Thailand from January to May 2024. They hired 1,212 Thai employees, a fall of 60% from the 2,999 Thais hired by new foreign firms during the same period of last year. Continued …

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI)’s Automotive Industry Club announced on Tuesday that Thailand’s auto production in the month of May had dropped by 16.2% year on year to 126,161 vehicles.

Loei gears up for Phi Ta Khon Festival

Covid infections rise

The number of Covid-19 patients being admitted to hospitals in Thailand has risen to 2,762 between June 2 and 8, or an average of 395 patients daily. This figure is an increase from the previous week, which saw 1,863 cases, as reported by the COVID-19 Information Center.

As the population ages, the prevalence of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) — commonly known as an enlarged prostate — has increased significantly. Over 50% of men over 60 and 80% of those over 70 experience BPH, suffering from symptoms like weak urine flow, straining to urinate, and frequent nighttime bathroom trips.

The Urology Center at Bumrungrad International Hospital has successfully treated 276 BPH patients through water vapor therapy — which is roughly 30% of all BPH cases in Thailand. The center is recognized by Boston Scientific (USA) as the first “Center of Excellence” in Asia for steam treatment of BPH. A devastating fire broke out in the pet section of Chatuchak Market early this morning, destroying 118 shops and resulting in the deaths of approximately 1,000 animals. The fire, which started at around 4.3 0am, left employees scrambling for safety as thick smoke filled the area.

French Expat Rescues Two Men from Drowning in Lopburi

On Sat urday, Khok Tum police received an emergency call about three individuals drowning at the Bott Camping Ground in Mueang Lopburi. Although two men were rescued, one individual remains missing.

Top industry body predicts frugal Songkran celebrations by the public

Thailand can expect an extremely crowded 2024 Songkran festival, but spending will not be as high as expected, according to the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry, and Banking (JSCCIB).

25% jump in foreign condo purchases in 2023

Foreigners spent more than 73.16 billion baht to buy a total of 14,449 condominium units in Thailand in 2023, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) reported on Wednesday.

Hua Hin discusses ways to combat drought season water shortage

In response to the looming water shortage during the hot season, officials at Hua Hin Municipality met on Friday to discuss ways to maintain an adequate water supply.

79 confirmed Covid cases at PKK prison

The Covid-19 situation at Prachuap Khiri Khan prison is set to be managed by an imminent emergency operations center (EOC), following the identification of infection clusters. This development comes as the public health permanent secretary, Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong, reported intensified surveillance in the wake of 79 confirmed Covid cases at the prison.

The first infection was detected on March 27 after a 35-year-old female inmate exhibiting influenza-like symptoms tested positive for Covid upon her admission to Prachuap Khiri Khan Hospital. More than 80 tigers that were rescued from a temple in Thailand have died from a viral disease, according to local media reports.

The Buddhist temple – Wat Pa Luang Ta Bua, known as Tiger Temple, in Kanchanaburi province, west of Bangkok – was a tourist attraction where visitors took selfies with tigers and bottle-fed cubs. Yesterday, a massive python and a baby monitor lizard were captured in Soi Thepanusorn. The first call for assistance came early, at 9am, when a small monitor lizard had managed to sneak into a local’s house in Moo 4, Wichit. World’s worst smog chokes northern Thailand

Most provinces in the north were blanketed with dangerous red-coded levels of PM2.5 this morning, with Chiang Mai rated the city with the worst air pollution in the entire world.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 8am that 14 provinces were facing red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 75.9 to 173.6 micrograms per cubic metre of air over the past 24 hours. Cabinet green lights bills to modify alcohol control law

The Cabinet has given initial approval to five proposed bills aiming to modify the current alcohol control law, a move that could potentially lead to extended selling hours and more relaxed advertising rules. This decision has, however, sparked controversy among anti-alcohol advocates.
