The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning for severe rainfall in 34 provinces tomorrow, urging residents to be cautious of potential flash floods and landslides. The warning highlights the risk due to heavy and very heavy rain expected in various regions.

TMD reported that the northern region will experience significant rainfall in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, and Tak. Pattaya: Search For Culprit Who Muzzled 10 Dogs With Tape
Authorities are searching for an unknown individual who bound the mouths of 10 dogs with adhesive tape in Soi 12, Pattaya-Naklua Road, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. Some of the dogs were also seen with plastic bottles hanging around their necks. Local residents speculate that the muzzling was due to the dogs’ loud barking and aggressive behavior toward tourists. Upon investigation, it was confirmed that the dogs had been walking and lying along the streets with their mouths taped shut. The security guards in the area stated that although these dogs are usually looked after by someone, they remain muzzled day and night, with the tape only removed when someone comes to feed them. Squabble over pets escalates to murder, suicide

A months-long dispute over two pets, a dog and a cat, culminated in a retired army officer shooting dead his neighbor and then ending his own life, in Khlong Luang district of Pathum Thanion Monday morning.

Police were called to a housing estate in tambon Khlong Sam. They found two bodies, one Col. Jaruchart Jarupan, aged 64, and the other, Saowagul Sasadoh, 53. The woman’s 30-year-old son was also injured, with a bullet wound to his left hand. Continued …

Digital wallet handout to start this month

About 14.5 million state welfare cardholders and people with disabilities are expected to receive a 10,000-baht digital wallet handout after Sept. 20, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said on Monday.

“By the end of September, we will offer the digital wallet to 13.5 million state welfare cardholders and 2.2 million people with disabilities,” he said, adding that some people with disabilities also have state welfare cards. – The Nation

All restrictions on spending of digital wallet scheme lifted

About 14 million disabled and vulnerable Thai people will each receive 10,000 baht in cash under the “digital wallet” scheme this month, while the remaining 30 million people will receive the cash in two payments.

Heavy rain forecast across Thailand

Heavy rain is forecast across nearly all of Thailand, with 42 provinces, including Bangkok and its surrounding areas, expected to face severe weather. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of flash floods, overflowing waterways, and high sea waves over 3 meters.

Thunderstorms are expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Surat Thani provinces. The minimum temperature will be 23 to 25°C, and the maximum temperature will be 30 to 35°C. Thai university working on solutions to PM2.5 pollution in north

Severe PM 2.5 pollution is having a dire effect on the environment and way of life in northern Thailand, forcing many businesses to close and leading to increased health problems. Chinese imports putting four major Thai industries at risk

With just two months to go until the U.S. presidential election, an analyst is warning that no matter who wins, the trade war between the U.S. and China is certain to continue. However, if Donald Trump comes out on top, the impact on Thailand will be more severe, says Phiphat Luangnaruemitchai, chief economist at KKP Research, Kiatnakin Phatra Securities (KKP).

Cabinet approves 5 measures to curb ultra-cheap imports

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved five measures made up of 63 operational plans to tackle the influx of ultra-cheap and often substandard products that have been flooding Thai markets, Suksit Srichomkwan, the prime ninister’s deputy secretary-general for political affairs, said.

Starved dead whale choked on garbage

During the Covid-19 lockdown, Jarupatcha Achavasmit, a lecturer at the School of Architecture, Art, and Design at King Mongkut Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, spent her time in Hua Hin. While walking along the beaches, she noticed that the waves were washing up trash.

Deluge expected with two storms on radar

Thailand is expected to face two storms from September to October, bringing heavy rainfall across various regions, according to the Meteorological Department. Thanasit Iam-ananchai, the department’s deputy chief, said two direct storms are forecast to affect the country during these two months.

Officials from various local authorities, including the Forest Department and Phuket Buddhism Office, recently inspected the Big Buddha site to ascertain if it complied with the 2.4-hectare land limit established by the Forest Department. Thai women track down alleged molester, call police

The first victim, a 15-year-old girl referred to as Miss Am, recounted her ordeal to the media. Two more deaths have taken the toll in Bangkok’s moonshine methanol scare to six, as investigators widen their search for those producing and selling the deadly rotgut beyond the city’s northern suburbs.

UK warns travelers not to smuggle pot into country

The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned travelers to the United Kingdom from Thailand, Canada and the United States that any attempt to bring cannabis into the country could see them sent to jail after a huge increase in arrests was reported.

According to the British embassy in Bangkok, 378 air passengers have been arrested for smuggling cannabis, and an estimated 15 tons of the drug has been detected and seized at UK airports so far this year. Electricity bills to remain unchanged at 4.18 baht per unit

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) resolved on Thursday to keep the fuel tariff (FT) for electricity unchanged at 39.72 satang for September to December, which will keep electricity capped at 4.18 baht per unit.

Poonpat Leesombatpaiboon, the commission’s secretary-general, said the move to keep the FT unchanged was in line with the Cabinet’s resolution on July 23 to retain the ceiling on power bills as part of the government’s bid to help ease people’s financial burdens. Continued …

Power tariff set to fall by early 2025

The power tariff, which will be capped at 4.18 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit) to maintain electricity prices until the end of this year, is likely to decrease early next year, as global demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is thought to be decreasing, which would result in lower gas prices.

The demand and supply of LNG plays a key role in determining the tariff rate, which is used to calculate power bills. Gas, from domestic sources and LNG imports, makes up 60% of the fuels used to generate power in Thailand. Continued …

Thai manufacturers may succumb to a new flood of cheap products from China if the government fails to launch measures to deal with the entry of Chinese online retailer Temu, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Over 100,000 Myanmar workers arrested in Thailand’s crackdown

The Chachoengsao Provincial Court fined a Chinese-owned factory 1.8 billion baht for releasing wastewater into the Jone Reservoir in the central province of Chachoengsao.

Thais ground overseas travel plans amid squeeze on spending power

Thailand’s outbound travel market is experiencing a slowdown in the second half of this year due to a decline in consumer spending power, according to Charoen Wangananont, president and board committee member of the Thai Travel Agents Assn. (TTAA).

Thailand Eases Regulations for Coastal Hotels

The government includes “illegal hotels” in Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga in the legal system and expects 2,500 more legal hotel rooms. Hotels with no more than 49 rooms do not have to carry out an environmental impact assessment (IEE).

Chinese Tourist Killed by Falling Tree in Chiang Mai

In a tragic accident in Chiang Mai, a Chinese tourist lost her life, and another was injured when a tree fell on them while they were ziplining. The incident occurred around noon in Village 2, Thep Sadet subdistrict, Doi Saket District. The Erawan Rescue Center swiftly dispatched emergency services to the scene.

The couple, Liu Yang, 46, and Jing Chen, 44, from China, were crossing a suspension bridge after enjoying a ziplining adventure. Baht set to further strengthen this year despite headwinds

The baht could appreciate further to 35.30 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, after hitting a four-month high of 35.72 early Wednesday, but political instability and deteriorating fiscal positions as a result of the government’s populist policies could limit the Thai currency’s rebound.

Factory output falls more than forecast as car output slumps

The government’s backtracking from its plan to relist cannabis as a narcotic drug is a step in the right direction. The reversal was ordered by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin just days before a meeting of the Narcotics Control Board (NCB).

Cannabis advocates praised the decision, ending a 10-day protest by advocacy group Writing Thailand’s Cannabis Future near Government House. Instant coffee market set for 5% growth

Thailand’s instant coffee market is expected to grow by 5% this year as Nescafé Thailand plans to allocate 620 million baht for brand communication advertising.

Jojo Dela Cruz, business executive officer of Nestlé (Thai) Ltd.’s coffee and creamer business unit, said that in this year’s first quarter the value of the country’s instant coffee market was 5.7 billion baht, up 5% when compared with the corresponding period last year, while the value of the ready-to-drink coffee market reached 3.8 billion baht, up 10% from the corresponding period last year. People were being invited to experience romantic vibes in the rainy season on a special Kiha 183 tourism train, which will make 16 trips on seven routes in August and September. Lopburi Municipality captures 150 monkeys in new operation

Lopburi Municipality captured over 150 monkeys in the first two days of a new operation aimed at controlling the monkey population in the city. The goal is to capture at least 500 monkeys within 10 days, with support from 12 military personnel from the 13th Military Circle.

New Post-Graduate Visa for Foreign Students Implemented

Starting July 15, the Thai government has implemented the Non-Ed Plus Visa, which will allow foreign students studying bachelor’s degree level or above to extend their stay in Thailand for one year after graduation to give them time to find employment, travel, participate in other similar activities, or apply for a new type of visa once employed.

Thirty-eight long-tailed  macaques were captured yesterday in a new round of relocations, jointly launched by the Lop Buri municipal administration and the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, to contain the population of the monkeys and to reduce the disturbance they cause.

S.Ken’s Bistro – Home of Crafted Food & Drinks

Expat News first met Kantapat “Ken” Agechaosuan when we were both starting new businesses in Hua Hin. Chef Ken, as he is known, was in need of an economical way to market his new restaurant, S.Ken’s Bistro in Kao Tao, to the Hua Hin expat community.

At that breakfast meeting, we forged a collaboration, as Ken calls it, that has lasted eight years – and now extending into a ninth.

Hua Hin Expat News is pleased to announce that S.Ken’s Bistro has extended its advertising program for the 9th year.

Since that first meeting, S.Ken’s Bistro has become a well-known, and favorite, dining location, serving both Western and Thai cuisine in a lovely setting alongside the Kao Tao lake.

Chef Ken has worldwide experience as a chef at five-star hotels, and just before Covid hit was a contender on Thailand’s Iron Chef TV competition. His food has been featured daily on Expat News, even during the pandemic, when we worked together promoting takeaway meals.

The Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) has backed a move to reduce restrictions on foreign ownership in Thailand’s property market, saying it could help unload unsold units piling up due to a drop in Thais’ purchasing power.

Cabinet maintains current electricity and diesel prices

The Cabinet endorsed the Ministry of Energy’s proposal today to maintain the electricity price for September through December at 4.18 baht/unit for households and businesses.

Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said, however, that smaller households, which use fewer than 300 units of power per month, will be charged 3.99 baht/unit. The cabinet also decided to maintain the pump price of diesel at 33 baht/liter until the end of October, to the ease burden on the transport sector. Continued …

Local gold traders are optimistic about the future of bullion prices, forecasting that they could surpass US$2,500 per ounce by the end of 2024. This significant price increase is expected to follow a potential interest rate cut by the U.S. Federal Reserve in September.

Gold was trading at US$2,395 per ounce in Asian markets yesterday, spurred by the announcement that President Joe Biden has withdrawn from the U.S. presidential race, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as the new Democratic candidate. Thailand to Control Cannabis Use through Laws, Not as a Narcotic

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has announced that the country will attempt to control cannabis use through laws, rather than reverting to categorizing it as a narcotic. This comes as a change in policy direction.

Anutin thanked Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for deciding to control cannabis usage via legislation. The PM, Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, and Anutin had discussions on Tuesday during which the prime minister gave instructions to draft a law managing cannabis rather than classifying it as a narcotic again. Syphilis cases triple among Thai teens, fivefold increase in pregnant women

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) reported a significant increase in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among Thai people, particularly syphilis. Cases of syphilis among teenagers have tripled compared to previous years and the number of pregnant women with syphilis has increased fivefold.

A report concluded on July 18 showed that syphilis cases in Thailand doubled compared to 2018 (from an average of 11 to 28.1 per 100,000 population). Cases among teenagers tripled, from an average of 27.9 to 91.2 per 100,000 population. Continued …

Drug-addicted Thai man lynched after attempted rape

A 17-year-old Thai teenager and locals in the central province of Ayutthaya lynched a drug addict after he attempted to rape the teen’s mother.

Officers from Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Police Station were alerted to the death of 38-year-old drug addict Yuranan on the night of July 20. On arrival, officers found Yuranan lying face down on the second floor of the house. Continued …

Roadside bomb injures six police officers in southern Thailand

A roadside bomb detonated in Pattani yesterday, injuring six police officers and prompting the army to urge motorists to exercise caution. The explosion occurred on Road 42 in Nong Chik district as an armored pickup truck carrying the officers was returning to base from a checkpoint.

The Internal Security Operations Command’s (ISOC) southern frontline office reported that the blast caused the vehicle to veer off the road and tumble down an embankment, igniting a brush fire in the process. Potential growth rate predicted below 2% for next 5 years

Kiatnakin Phatra Research (KKP Research) forecasts that Thailand’s potential economic growth rate will be below 2% for the next five years due to weaker productivity and competitiveness.

Motorcycle sales dip 10% in H1

Motorcycle sales fell by 10% year-on-year during the first half, with Thai Honda Co., a major motorcycle manufacturer and distributor, also experiencing a sales drop in the sluggish market.

Clean energy to be featured at Rayong port, industrial estate

The Map Ta Phut Industrial Estate and its deep-sea port in Rayong will be developed to have a clean new look under a plan to replace fossil fuel-derived energy with renewable energy to serve growing demand among companies committed to carbon dioxide reduction, says the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT).

How Energy Intensive Are Data Centers?

(Note: Several data centers are currently planned or being built in Thailand, which will require a great deal more electric power than currently available.)

In 2022, the global electricity consumption stood at roughly 27,000 terawatt-hours, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). While countries like China and the United States had the highest electricity demand by a considerable margin, a new player that rivals the consumption of some of the biggest economies and is bolstered by the ongoing AI hype has entered the stage: data centers. As the International Energy Agency (IEA) points out in a recent report, estimated data center energy consumption could increase rapidly over the next two years.

While the median estimate for data centers, AI-connected offerings and cryptocurrency mining stood at 415 TWh in 2022, already significantly higher than the United Kingdom’s electricity demand and on par with the electricity consumption of France, this figure could rise to anything between 620 and 1,050 TWh in 2026. Per the IEA’s report, this would be the equivalent “to adding at least one Sweden or at most one Germany” to the most recent estimates. Continued …

Thailand records 19.6 million foreign arrivals so far this year

Thailand recorded 19.6 million foreign tourist arrivals from the January to July 21 period, the Tourism Ministry said Tuesday, up 34% from the same period a year earlier.

Bangkok has been ranked in 30th place among the world’s most risky cities for tourists by Forbes Advisor, a global platform dedicated to helping consumers make the best financial choices in business, investment, technology, and travel.

In its article titled “12 Best Travel Insurance Companies of July 2024” published this month, Forbes Advisor compared 60 international cities across seven metrics to determine which cities are the most (and least) risky for tourists. Thai AirAsia eyes new Indian routes

Thai AirAsia is focusing on opening new routes to India and within Southeast Asia in the second half to offset unrecovered flights to China, which are still hampered by the sluggish economy and higher competition from domestic travel.
