Monk expelled after being caught visiting motel for sex with woman in Pranburi

A 68-year-old monk has been expelled from the monkhood after being caught on video changing into civilian clothes and entering a short-stay motel with a woman in broad daylight in Pranburi.

The incident came to light after a TikTok user posted footage of the monk, whom they claimed to recognize from his regular alms rounds in the area. Post the Alpha, Delta, and Omicron variants of COVID-19 that surfaced during 2020-2022, a new sub-variant of the virus, LP.8.1, has emerged.   • New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

    For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

Former TAT governor offers solutions to Thailand’s tourism crisis as Chinese arrivals plummet

Thailand’s tourism industry is in serious decline, as the number of Chinese tourists — a key driver of the market — has dropped dramatically. In 2019, before the pandemic, Thailand welcomed 11 million Chinese tourists, representing 27% of the total 39.8 million international visitors. That equated to around 900,000 Chinese arrivals per month, or roughly 30,000 per day.

Fast forward to 2025, and the situation has changed drastically. In January, there were about 22,000 Chinese tourists per day. By the end of April, that figure had fallen to around 10,000. The average daily arrival from China during the first four months of 2025 was only about 13,000. By early May, the daily number had dipped below 10,000, with just 7,288 Chinese tourists recorded on May 5 and 8,379 on May 13. Continued …

New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. Residents in several areas of Hua Hin are set to experience a temporary water outage on Tuesday, May 27, as the city’s Waterworks Division carries out emergency repairs on a damaged raw water pipeline.

The division will repair a leaking 1,000 mm (40″) HPDE raw water transmission pipeline near the security checkpoint opposite the entrance to the Pranburi Irrigation and Maintenance Project Office. The repair is scheduled from 8 am to 8 pm. Continued …

    New Schedule: Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

    The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

36 tourists injured, three critically, as tour bus rams utility pole

Thirty-six tourists, both Thai and foreign, were injured when the driver of the tour bus in which they were traveling lost control and slammed into a utility pole in Phetchaburi province, breaking it in half. The accident was reported at around 4am this morning on Phetkasem Road (inbound) in Khao Yoi district of the southern province.

120 arrested in underwear at Bangkok hotel party

Police arrested more than 120 people wearing only underwear in a Bangkok hotel room where they were partying with drugs early Sunday morning. Police stopped the party in Room 2001 on the 20th floor at S31 Hotel in Watthana district at 1.30am on Sunday.

Another British man has been nabbed in a high-stakes arrest after being caught returning through Manchester Airport customs with two suitcases full of cannabis from Thailand. The alleged British drug mule, Ahmed Sohail, who claimed he went to Thailand to lose some weight, ended up losing much more than he bargained for.

Stopped by eagle-eyed Border Force officials, the 26-year-old drug trafficker was carrying two suitcases that piqued their suspicion. Rainmaking flights over Hua Hin give air quality instant boost

The air quality index (AQI) in Hua Hin, Bangkok, its adjacent provinces and some northern provinces has reportedly improved following the first day of rainmaking flights by the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation (DRRAA).

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Itthi Sirilathayakorn said on Tuesday that the Royal Rainmaking Operation Units in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district and Kanchanaburi province began their mission in the afternoon on Monday. Continued …

Thailand faces worsening air quality crisis, health warnings issued

Thailand’s air quality has significantly deteriorated, with 20 provinces reporting pollution levels exceeding health standards. The most severe pollution is found in Pak Kret, with Bangkok also experiencing widespread poor air quality.

Severe flooding in the south has claimed 25 lives and affected more than 660,000 households in 10 provinces, with large areas of six provinces still inundated as the water drains slowly off.

Phatsakorn Bunyalak, director-general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), said on Tuesday that from Nov. 23 to Dec. 3, flooding triggered by days of heavy rain was reported in 10 southern provinces – Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Trang, Satun, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat. Baby elephants’ trunks caught in snares, rescue underway

Authorities from the Department of Conservation Area 2 (Sriracha) mobilized a team of veterinarians and wildlife officers to rescue two injured baby elephants trapped in snares. Concerns have been raised over the potential danger posed by the protective elephant herd during the operation.

The injured elephants were first spotted on Sunday in the forest around Kaeng Hang Maew, Kaeng Hang Maew District, Chanthaburi. One elephant has a snare wound on the middle of its trunk, while the other is injured near the trunk’s tip. Both calves remain with their herd of approximately 40 wild elephants. Continued …

AIS expects consolidation with TTTBB by next year

Advanced Info Service (AIS) targets completion of the consolidation of its own fixed broadband internet system with that of Triple T Broadband (TTTBB) by the end of 2025. AIS took over TTTBB in November 2023. The consolidation covers operations, billing, services and back-up systems.

40% of fathers smoke, survey shows

Almost four in 10 fathers in Thailand smoke cigarettes, which mostly has a negative influence on their children, especially as more young people are now vaping while the average age of people who vape drops each year, according to new survey findings.

The survey, conducted recently on 1,159 fathers and other male relatives who have a key role in raising a child from birth until six years of age, found that 39.8% of respondents are smokers. Most (77.22%) smoke cigarettes, 12.36% vape and the rest both smoke both, he said. Continued …

Cabinet puts Bt10,000 benefit for the elderly on hold

The cabinet instructed the Finance Ministry today to review the second phase of the digital wallet scheme, under which about four million people over 60 would have received a 10,000 baht cash benefit next January.

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra asked the Finance Ministry to study the legal aspects of the scheme in more detail and to resubmit its findings to the cabinet for consideration. Economy Faces Strain from Chinese Goods Influx: BoT

The influx of Chinese goods has put pressure on Thailand’s manufacturing growth and has hindered loan expansion within the banking sector, according to Bank of Thailand Gov. Sethaput Suthiwartnarueput yesterday. He addressed these concerns at the “Thailand Next Move 2025: Resiliency for an Uncertain World” seminar held by Money and Banking magazine.

Since 2014, Southeast Asian countries have witnessed a consistent rise in Chinese imports, with a noticeable acceleration starting in 2020. This surge is largely attributed to escalating geopolitical and economic fragmentation, Sethaput noted. By 2023, Thailand’s imports from China reached $71.1 billion (roughly 2.53 trillion baht), making Thailand the second largest importer of Chinese goods in Southeast Asia, just after Vietnam. More trade barriers and hindrances to campaigns against carbon dioxide emissions are major concerns among Thai manufacturers who need to adapt to changes expected from the Donald Trump administration, according to the latest survey by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Thai export performance improving steadily

Thai exports have performed better than expected this year, says the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC), which expects 2024 forecasts to be upgraded as the year draws to a close.

Cabinet approves 38.58 billion baht for rice farmers’ subsidies

The Cabinet on Tuesday earmarked 38.58 billion baht to cover subsidies for 4.68 million rice-farming households nationwide this year, Agriculture Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat said. She said the funds would be spent on providing a 1,000 baht per rai subsidy, capped at 10 rai per family.

Once the budget is formally approved by the Cabinet, the Agricultural Extension Department will send the list of eligible farmers to the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives to remit the money within this year, Narumon said. Continued …

Saudia Arabia flights to Phuket begin

Thailand’s tourism sector is poised to welcome an influx of Saudi Arabian tourists, thanks to new direct flights connecting Riyadh and Jeddah to the resort island of Phuket. Cabinet to consider carbon tax next week

The Finance Ministry is set to propose a carbon tax for cabinet approval on Dec. 11. Speaking at the Sustainability Forum 2025 seminar on Tuesday, Kulaya Tantitemit, director-general of the Excise Department, said the implementation of the carbon tax would not affect operators or consumers of oil and petroleum products because the overall tax burden on oil and petroleum products will remain the same.

The department will simply adjust the proportion of the tax on oil and petroleum products and incorporate the carbon tax into the oil and petroleum tax structure, she said. Continued …

Thailand’s Expats Urged to Register with TRD for Tax

Tax expert Thomas Carden has advised expatriates residing in Thailand for 180 days or more in 2024 to obtain a tax identification number from the Thai Revenue Department (TRD). Carden emphasized the need for expatriates to register and submit tax forms by the first quarter of 2025, even if they believe they owe no tax.

Record Loy Krathong spending won’t offset economic problems

The University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said that while spending during the Loy Krathong festival is expected to exceed 10 billion baht, it is unlikely to have a significant impact on the economy.

Digital economy seen growing 19% in 2024

Thailand’s digital economy continues to record strong double-digit growth, fueled by the rise of e-commerce, particularly video commerce and online travel services. In 2024, the country’s digital economy is expected to grow 19% over last year to US$46 billion on the basis of gross merchandise value (GMV).

The country’s digital economy expanded 26% in 2023 to generate a GMV of $39 billion and it is projected to reach a GMV of $100-165 billion in 2030, according to a report jointly produced by Google, Temasek and Bain & Co. Continued …

A day at Khao Kheow Zoo

Even though it was nearly midday, I found myself stuck in traffic for several kilometers en route to Khao Kheow Open Zoo. It turned out to be the outcome of families trying to spend the last few days of school break with Moo Deng, the superstar baby pygmy hippo.

To ease gridlock and provide convenience, the zoo has implemented an online ticketing system, but things did not appear to go as planned. Violence erupts in Deep South as deadline on Tak Bai case nears

Three violent attacks were carried out in Pattani and Narathiwat Wednesday evening and early Thursday in what are suspected to be symbolic attacks related to the Tak Bai massacre case, the statute of limitations on which is due to expire today.

Khalijah Musa was just 12 years old when her brother Sari was stuffed into a Thai army truck, hands bound, joining a pile of arrested protesters who all suffocated to death.

Twenty years after the Oct, 25, 2004, tragedy, known as the “Tak Bai massacre”, Musa and the other relatives of the 78 victims are mourning the fact that the killers will never be brought to justice. Chinese-grown Shine Muscat grapes contaminated with dangerous chemicals

Shine Muscat grapes imported from China have been found to be heavily laced with dangerous chemicals, including chlorpyrifos, the Thai Pesticides Alert Network (Thai-Pan) and the Foundation for Consumers announced.

The two consumer protection organizations recently conducted laboratory tests on 24 samples of the juicy and popular grapes purchased from retail outlets, vendors and wet markets. Nine samples were imported from China, while the remaining 15 samples were imported from unknown sources. Continued …

Gold prices have taken a nosedive in Thailand, with gold ornaments now pegged at 44,100 baht per baht weight. The Gold Traders Assn. (GTA) reports a 300-baht drop from yesterday, putting an end to the recent upward streak.

As of this morning, gold bullion is fetching 43,500 baht to buy and 43,600 baht to sell per baht weight. Meanwhile, 96.5% purity gold ornaments are being snapped up for 42,720.88 baht but hitting the market at 44,100 baht. Continued …

Phuket cannabis shop owner finds thieves for a taste of revenge

One of the cannabis shop owners in Phuket who fell victim to two foreign thieves, yesterday tracked down the suspects and physically assaulted them at their accommodation.

Several cannabis shop owners in Phuket reached out to other vendors to warn them after losing products to the two foreign thieves, whose identities remain undisclosed. CCTV footage from some of the ganja shops showed the thieves stealing entire jars of products from each shop. Continued …

Thai poverty levels decreased in 2023

A total of 2.39 million Thais were classified as poor in 2023, a significant decrease from the previous year of 3.79 million people, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its latest report on Thailand’s poverty and disparity situation. The percentage of the poor population in Thailand also went down from 5.4% in 2022 to 3.4% in 2023, the NESDC reported.

The council attributed the decrease in the poor to continued economic expansion, especially in the agricultural sector, which has the highest percentage of low-income workers. It added that the government’s state welfare card scheme in 2023 accepted applications from those who had missed the application deadlines in the previous rounds, allowing more people to gain access to state-funded services and benefits. Thailand’s vehicle production hits the brakes

The automotive industry in Thailand has experienced a significant downturn in vehicle production, with September seeing a total of 122,277 units produced, marking a 25.5% decrease from the same period last year.

This decline reflects a 15.8% reduction in vehicles manufactured for export, totalling 87,666 units, and a 42.3% drop in vehicles produced for domestic sales, amounting to 34,611 units. Continued …

The Ministry of Finance has rolled out new registrations for the 2025 state welfare card, aiming to wrap up all the eligibility checks by March 31 next year. A fresh round of financial lifelines is coming with 1,545 baht heading straight into the pockets of those who qualify.

Costco Shipping Ports Ltd. has acquired 12.5% and 30% ownership holdings in Thai Laem Chabang Terminal Co., (TLT) and Hutchison Laem Chabang Terminal (HLT).

ZHAO Fengnian, the chief accountant, signed the project agreement with collaborating firms at the project signing event in Vietnam on Wednesday, in the presence of ZHU Tao, the chairman of the board of Costco Shipping Ports. The consideration for the acquisition is approximately $110 million, which includes the Berth A2
in TLT, Berths A3, C1-C2 and D1-D3 in HLT, where D1-D3 is partly under construction. Continued …

Bangkok housing market set to decline amid poor economy

SCB EIC, the research center of Siam Commercial Bank, predicts that the transfer of new residential units in Greater Bangkok will decline by 10% this year, with a further contraction of 1%-3% projected for 2025, mainly due to the country’s sluggish economy.
