New Tax Rules for Expats in Thailand Spark Concern

Thailand’s recent tax regulation changes have sent ripples through the expat community. By March 2025, foreign retirees and other expats in Thailand will be required to file income tax returns for the 2024 tax year, marking a significant shift in the nation’s approach to taxing foreign residents.

Announced by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin in October 2023, the new tax regime aims to widen the tax base to address the fiscal challenges posed by Thailand’s aging population. 178-Feet Drop Caused Injuries on Singapore Airlines Jet

Rapid changes in the gravitational force led to a 178-foot (54-meter) altitude drop of a Singapore Airlines flight that left two passengers dead and many others who were not buckled up injured in extreme turbulence last week, a preliminary investigation by Singapore’s Transport Ministry said Wednesday.

Kangaroo in Chiang Mai – no, really

Yesterday, a kangaroo was spotted at the entrance of Doi Suthep, slightly past Wat Sisoda, in Chiang Mai province, according to a video shared by CM108 Chiang Mai News. The marsupial was found around 8:20 am, causing quite a buzz among social media users.

Since the post was shared, several comments have poured in from users sharing their reactions. Thai real-estate market slumps in first quarter

Survey finds schooling expenses have gone up 43% to a 15-year high

The cost of schooling is at an all-time high because of higher tuition fees, instruction fees and increasing prices of school supplies, amounting to an estimated 60.322 billion baht, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said.

Caps on diesel, cooking gas, power to continue for now

The Cabinet has given the go-ahead to extend three subsidies in a bid to continue easing people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

The measures are: Capping the retail price of diesel at 33 baht per lit; capping cooking gas at 423 baht per 15kg canister; capping electricity at 19.05 baht per unit for households using less than 300 units per month. Continued …

The reservoir behind Pasak Jolasid Dam in Lop Buri province is drying up, with water only filling 15% of its capacity, sufficient for consumption and agriculture for about four months.

Chupong Isarat, director of the Pasak Jolasid Dam Water Distribution and Maintenance Project, said that only about 148 million cubic meters of water are left, making it necessary to reduce discharges of water from the reservoir from 3.4 million cubic meters per day to only 1.3 million cubic meters, starting this week, as planned by the Royal Irrigation Department. Trang Tourist Boat Overturns, One Fatality

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

The hope is, in spite of El Nino, that the current dry season will give way to rainfall from the middle of May. The IEAT governor, Veeris Ammarapala, said there was no immediate crisis as the region’s 6,000 factories had additional water supplies from reservoir transfers, the purchase of raw water from companies and the facility of wastewater treatment to reuse the resource. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has announced that Thailand is offering a visa-free scheme to Russian visitors for three months from May 1 to July 31.

Srettha held a press conference at Government House following a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day. Songkran generated 140 billion baht over 21 days

Sudawan Wangsupakitkosol, minister of tourism and sports, reported that the Economics Tourism and Sports Division has summarized the latest information on Thai and foreign tourists during the Songkran Festival 2024, from April 1-21.

The festival generated a total income of 140.335 billion baht, which is higher than the ministry’s previous estimate that during these 21 days the total income would be around 132 billion baht. Continued … 

Thailand Enters Low Tourism Season

Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, the president of the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA), revealed that Thailand is officially entering the low season, saying Thai tourism operators may struggle with low incoming tourists after the Songkran holidays.

Arrivals set to soar amid holidays in East Asia

Chinese and Japanese tourists are expected to flock to Thailand during the Labor Day holiday and Japan’s Golden Week, driving arrivals to 996,000, up 29% from the corresponding period last year, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

During the holiday period that runs from April 26 to May 5, Thailand is projected to welcome 89,000 foreign arrivals per day – 10% higher than the average – mainly attributed to public holidays in several countries, said Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, deputy governor for international marketing in Asia and South Pacific at TAT.
