Thap Thai in Hua Hin declared disaster zone, landfill fire continues

In response to the landfill fire that has been raging for over a week, the Thap Thai subdistrict in Hua Hin has been declared a disaster area, enabling officials to use significant resources to combat the blaze.

Officials say they expect the fire to be extinguished within the next two days. The fire, which started approximately one week ago due to extremely hot weather conditions, has consumed a massive pile of garbage accumulated over more than a decade at the old landfill site, which spans 170 acres at Moo 1, Ban Nong Pranpuk. Heat stroke claims 61 lives this year

Survey finds schooling expenses have gone up 43% to a 15-year high

The cost of schooling is at an all-time high because of higher tuition fees, instruction fees and increasing prices of school supplies, amounting to an estimated 60.322 billion baht, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said.

Thanawan Polwichai, advisory chairman of the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecast, said the survey on “Cost of back to school 2024 for guardians” had 1,365 respondents throughout the country and was conducted from May 1-6. Continued …

30,000 Thai workers vie for quota of 5,000 jobs in Israel

More than 30,000 Thai workers are seeking employment in Israel, while Thailand has received a quota of 5,000 positions in the Middle Eastern country’s agricultural sector for the second half of this year, according to the Department of Employment (DoE).

Caps on diesel, cooking gas, power to continue for now

The Cabinet has given the go-ahead to extend three subsidies in a bid to continue easing people’s financial burden, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Tuesday.

The measures are: Capping the retail price of diesel at 33 baht per lit; capping cooking gas at 423 baht per 15kg canister; capping electricity at 19.05 baht per unit for households using less than 300 units per month. Continued …

Hua Hin suffers agricultural losses following Tuesday’s storm

A powerful summer storm on Tuesday left a trail of destruction across several districts, with local farms, particularly durian orchards, bearing the brunt of the damage. Tuesday’s storm was the first significant rainfall the region has seen in nearly five months. #huahin

Much of Thailand will again experience thundershowers, with gusty winds and isolated heavy rains today due to the confluence of southeasterly and southerly winds prevailing over the upper part of the country, the Thai Meteorological Department said this morning.

Reported cases of Covid-19 have continued to rise over the past week, with 1,792 patients hospitalized and 12 dying of the disease, the Department of Disease Control said on Monday.

Online travel agen Booking.com predicts the Asia-Pacific region to have the fastest growth in bookings globally, even as travel demand cools post-high season. Thailand’s rare ‘tiger cat’ caught on video

The Asiatic Golden Cat — nicknamed “fire tiger” — is a medium-sized cat. It’s 16 inches tall and weighs up to 33 pounds. Scientists have a lot to learn about this animal, which is supposedly nocturnal, though many of the rare glimpses of this species on trail cams are during daylight hours.

Summer of 2024 has claimed 38 lives in Thailand due to heatstroke

A total of 38 people have died of heatstroke this year and most deaths occurred in the northeast of Thailand, the Heath Department said on Sunday.

Dr. Atthapol Kaewsamrit, deputy director-general of the Health Department, said that many parts of Thailand were experiencing extreme hot weather since February 22, resulting in 38 deaths caused by heatstroke. Continued …

Water discharges through Lop Buri dam cut by 62% to conserve water

The reservoir behind Pasak Jolasid Dam in Lop Buri province is drying up, with water only filling 15% of its capacity, sufficient for consumption and agriculture for about four months.

Chupong Isarat, director of the Pasak Jolasid Dam Water Distribution and Maintenance Project, said that only about 148 million cubic meters of water are left, making it necessary to reduce discharges of water from the reservoir from 3.4 million cubic meters per day to only 1.3 million cubic meters, starting this week, as planned by the Royal Irrigation Department. Hazardous smog chokes north, world’s 4th worst level in Chiang Mai

Most provinces in the north were blanketed with dangerous red-coded levels of PM2.5 this morning, with Chiang Mai rated the city with the fourth worst air pollution in the entire world.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 8am today that 11 provinces were facing red (seriously harmful) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5), ranging from 82.1 to 158.8 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the past 24 hours. Chinese Businessmen Extorted in Bangkok; Police Officers Among Suspects

Five Chinese businessmen were forcibly detained and extorted for 2.5 million baht in Bangkok on May 5. The extortion perpetrators, according to the Din Daeng police, included active and retired Thai law enforcement officers and civilians.

Trang Tourist Boat Overturns, One Fatality

Pattaya water supplies depend on the upcoming rains

The ongoing drought in the central provinces, including Chonburi and the Pattaya area, is causing concern according to the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand (IEAT). The report shows that the three-province Eastern Economic Corridor in 2023 suffered a 60% decline in rainfall from normal levels, though current reservoirs still have 52% of total capacity.

The hope is, in spite of El Nino, that the current dry season will give way to rainfall from the middle of May. The IEAT governor, Veeris Ammarapala, said there was no immediate crisis as the region’s 6,000 factories had additional water supplies from reservoir transfers, the purchase of raw water from companies and the facility of wastewater treatment to reuse the resource. Eight police officers in Nakhon Pathom have been suspended from the force following accusations of attempting to extort 200,000 baht from the owner of a chicken processing factory. Digital wallet scheme approved in principle by Cabinet

Sudawan Wangsupakitkosol, minister of tourism and sports, reported that the Economics Tourism and Sports Division has summarized the latest information on Thai and foreign tourists during the Songkran Festival 2024, from April 1-21.

Cops up ante on foreign criminals

Authorities are ramping up their crackdown on foreign criminals who arrive in the guise of tourists and use Thailand as their base for committing crimes.

Police Lt. Gen. Surapong Thanomjit, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 8, said the government has instructed the Royal Thai Police and the Interior Ministry to take measures to deal with the problem, particularly in Phuket. 206 Deaths in 5 Days of ‘Songkran 7 Days Road Safety Campaign’

A total of 1,564 road accidents, with 1,593 injuries and 206 deaths, were reported on Tuesday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in five days (April 1115) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 1117).

The provinces with the total highest fatalities were Bangkok and Chiang Rai with 13 deaths each. The total highest number of accidents was Chiang Rai with 61 and the highest number of injuries was Nan with 60 injuries. Continued …

Gargantuan clean up after Songkran festivities

Songkran festivities around Bangkok metropolitan area resulted in 51,000 tons of waste, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported on Tuesday. This year’s waste statistics were collected from April 12 to 15, and are higher than the same period last year by about 1,000 tons, said the BMA.

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt said six water trucks and city officials were deployed to clean up this tourist attraction starting at 4am on Tuesday. Songkran revelers: More than 100 tons of garbage on Silom and Khao San roads

The three-day Songkran water splashing on Khao San Road was over on Monday night and left behind about 116 tons of garbage, mostly drinking water bottles, plastic bags, water guns, plastic buckets and traces of white clay flour, to be collected by city collectors.

Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt supervised about 250 city workers in the cleanup of Khao San Road yesterday morning. About 200,000 Songkran revelers were estimated to visit the area Monday and Monday night, which was the last day of the Songkran celebrations there. Continued …

Thailand’s foreign tourism boom: 10 million visitors fuel 500 billion windfall

Thailand has welcomed over 10 million foreign tourists this year alone, leading to revenue exceeding 500 billion baht, reported the Tourism and Sports Ministry. The data, up to date as of yesterday, shows 10,723,953 foreign visitors have contributed to an income of 518 billion baht (US$14 billion).

Tour Boat Catches Fire In Ayutthaya, All Aboard Rescued

A tourist boat caught fire as it was bringing 24 Thai tourists for a sight-seeing tour of the Chao Phraya River in Muang district of Ayutthaya province yesterday afternoon. All the tourists were, however, safely evacuated to another passing tourist boat.

Urgent funding sought to solve Krabi’s water shortage

Relocation of cadmium tailings from Bangkok commences May 7

The logistics of relocating cadmium tailings from Samut Sakhon, Bangkok, and Chon Buri back to their original location in Tak is set to start on May 7. Bound & Beyond Plc, the company responsible for the task, has a deadline of 36 days to execute the operation, as stated by Pimphattra Wichaikul, the Industry Minister.

Pimphattra revealed yesterday that the committee in charge of the tailings’ transport has considered a revised plan. This revised plan involves the use of 30 trucks to relocate 450 tons of cadmium tailings per day, starting May 7. Thailand’s incredible nature reserve — where a trip costs just £7

Outside my tent it’s like Jurassic Park. The thundering footsteps of what must be some primordial giant make the canvas tremble. I peek out. In the midnight darkness I can make out the silhouette of a junior bull elephant stomping below our protected camp, battering the bamboo in a pique of sexual frustration. Taking a dip in Hua Hin a long time ago

It is not often I can remember what I was doing five days ago let alone 55 years, but a moth-eaten diary confirms that on April 14, 1969, I was in the Thai resort town of Hua Hin. A brief explanation is necessary.

A few days earlier I had arrived in Thailand after an exhausting overland trip across Asia from London. With me in Bangkok was one of the traveling companions on that journey, fellow Brit Clarence Shettlesworth. Sporting a colorful shirt and shorts and carrying a water gun, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin joined locals and tourists in the resort town of Hua Hin in celebrating Songkran in Pone Kingpetch Park, at an event arranged by the Hua Hin municipality.

Selected wage hike to 400 baht takes effect in Hua Hin

This year’s second minimum wage hike to 400 baht/day took effect yesterday, while a 10% increase is state officials’ salaries will be implemented on May 1.

Thailand Reports Total of 116 Deaths in Three Days of Songkran

A total of 936 road accidents, with 968 injuries and 116 deaths, were reported on Sunday by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) in three days (April 11-13) of the “Seven Days Road Safety Campaign” during Songkran (April 11-17).

The province with the total highest fatalities was Bangkok with 8 deaths. The total highest number of accidents were Nakhon Si Thammarat and Songkhla with 39 each, and the highest number of injuries was in Songkhla with 45 injuries. Continued …

The chief of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has urged the government to undertake immediate stimulus measures, as there was still time for the digital wallet scheme to be implemented.

When is Hua Hin planning to start rationing water?

On April 6, the Hua Hin Water Department put out a notice announcing the “immediate” rationing of water, with water available only between 5am-10:30am daily. The rationing was announced on April 8. It is now April 10 and the water is still running.

So, what’s going on? Did “immediate” mean sometime this month? Is the decision to start rationing being delayed because of the Songkran holiday?

We asked the government for details but they still have not responded. We are particularly interested in whether hotels, resorts, restaurants and water parks would be included in the water rationing. These are all heavy water-using businesses, with many depending on the tourist dollars a vibrant – and wet – Songkran would provide.

One resort we asked about the water rationing said it was “buying extra water from wherever we can”, and that trucks were delivering water daily. “Quite a hassle but it is what it is.”

A cynic might think the government is holding back until after Songkran, fearing that water rationing would ruin Songkran in Hua Hin, and all the money it provides. Given how protective local officials (and some farang) are of Hua Hin, this would not be a surprise.

We hope, however, the government is not sacrificing people’s lives because of a holiday.

Wherever you live, you’ve heard people make some wild comments about your country. Here are a few comments when asked, “What’s the most ignorant thing a tourist has said about your country?”

“When visiting LA, I was chatting with a girl at a party, and when she asked where I’m from, I told her London. She then said, ‘Omg, I hate London.’ I was slightly confused and asked if she’d ever been, and she said ‘No.’ I was like, ‘Okay, nice chatting with you!'”

“I knew someone who was shocked that we don’t live in stone cottages and thought Ireland was like a developing world country.”

“‘Where do you keep the Vikings?’ An American tourist visiting Denmark asked. I left him very confused and a little disappointed by telling him the truth about Vikings and that we did, in fact, not have reservations or anything.”

“I overheard an American woman saying that she was surprised at how well we Australians spoke American, although the accent made it a little hard to understand.”

“I met an American once who was under the impression that suburban Canadians all lived in wood cabins in the wilderness. At first, I thought he was kidding. Then he asked if we had winters all year round and was astonished to learn we have lengthy summers.”

Cabinet agrees to Bt235B to fund health Gold Card scheme

The cabinet approved a Bt235-billion budget for 2025 fiscal year to fund the universal health security scheme (Gold Card) for the Thai population, under which each citizen will be entitled to medical coverage worth an average of Bt3,844.55.

Thailand’s currency one of Asia’s worst performers

Thailand’s currency may extend its recent declines to test support at last year’s low amid growing pressure on the central bank to cut interest rates, according to the U.S. website Bloomberg.com.

The currency has already dropped almost 7% since the start of January, making it one of Asia’s worst performers, and putting it less than 1.4% away from October’s low of 37.237 per dollar. Some analysts see that level being tested if the Bank of Thailand trims its benchmark today. Continued …

Ninety-nine academics have joined in opposition to the entertainment complexes for which the House of Representatives approved a study on March 28. The study will address illegal gambling issues and the economic benefit of such complexes, which would house casinos as well as other facilities.

Foreign demand for Chon Buri condos outpaces Bangkok

The tourism industry’s recovery and the ongoing development of the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) gave a significant boost to the real estate industry in the eastern province of Chon Buri last year, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) said on Monday.

The Cabinet resolved on Tuesday to suspend the filing of TM6 arrival/departure cards at 12 land and sea checkpoints, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said.

He said tourists arriving via land or sea at 12 checkpoints, including the Sadao border checkpoint in Songkhla province, will not be required to file TM6 cards from April 15 to Oct. 15. Haze control effort ramps up as Songkran approaches

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has instructed Chiang Mai and every province in the upper north to prepare their operation centers to handle the haze situation in order to ease air pollution during the upcoming Songkran festival when a rise in the number of tourists is expected.

Pump prices of diesel will increase by 50 satang a liter today morning amid rising concern about the cost of subsidizing the fuel, said Wisak Watanasap, director of the Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO). The new price of diesel B7, B10 and B20 will be 30.44 baht per liter.

The recent death of an academic in Chiang Mai from lung cancer has heightened concerns about PM2.5 pollution in the northern province, which has consistently ranked as one of the world’s most air-polluted areas.
