Monsoon rains to hit 39 provinces, flash flood warnings

Heavy monsoon rains are expected to lash 39 provinces across Thailand, with severe weather warnings issued for potential flash floods and runoff. Bangkok is also bracing for significant rainfall, with 70% of the area anticipated to be affected.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms will cover 60% of the area, mostly in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. China’s demographics alone – even if you ignore its increasing marginalization from global trade, its dependency on food and energy imports, and President Xi Jinping’s utter gutting of the bureaucracy of anyone who might bring him accurate but unwelcome news – could collapse its economy in the coming decades. Between now and 2050, by conservative estimates, its working-age population will shrink by 220 million people, around a fifth.

In 2023, Thailand saw one of the worst drops in FDI in the world

Foreign direct investment (FDI), a key barometer for economic growth for developing countries, has seen a decline of about 2% in 2023, with Thailand’s share of FDI inflow declining among the highest in the world, according to latest data released by United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD), with ASEAN continuing to remain in the positive trajectory witnessing a 1.2% uptick in its FDI to US$ 226.3 billion.

UNCTAD, in a report released recently, said that global FDI in 2023 decreased marginally, by 2%, to $1.3 trillion. This headline figure was affected by wild swings in financial flows through a small number of European conduit economies; excluding the effect of these conduits, global FDI flows were more than 10% lower than in 2022. Call to educate public over nuclear push

 

A new public perception of nuclear technology in the power sector is needed and crucial for the Energy Ministry’s efforts to push for small modular reactor (SMR) projects in the 2024 power development plan, say energy and nuclear technology experts.

Pickup truck loan defaults surge 39% in May

The National Credit Bureau (NCB) reported a significant 39% increase in bad debt for pickup truck loans in May, highlighting an alarming trend in the auto finance sector.

Banks have also seen a contraction in car loans during the first half of this year, corresponding with a nationwide decline in car sales. By May 2024, non-performing loans (NPLs) for pickup trucks had reached approximately 138 billion baht, marking a 39.1% year-on-year rise. Continued …

A senior Thai civil servant at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the last week has brought home the significance of the crucial visa changes ushered in on July 15. Undeniably, the changes offering a 60-day visa exemption to travelers from 103 countries extendable to 90 days and the new DTV visa are radical departures.

For instance, on the 60-day exemption, Naruechai Ninnart explained that this was a new visa from the previous 30-day one. In short, it allowed for business engagement and ad hoc working. The government’s backtracking from its plan to relist cannabis as a narcotic drug is a step in the right direction. The reversal was ordered by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin just days before a meeting of the Narcotics Control Board (NCB).

Cannabis advocates praised the decision, ending a 10-day protest by advocacy group Writing Thailand’s Cannabis Future near Government House. Why More Thais Are Becoming Anxious About the Rise of China

What a xenophobic, or more accurately a “sinophobic”, week for Thailand, particularly Thai netizens. First, was the loud cries of condemnation against a large billboard solely in Chinese language found in the heart of Bangkok’s Huai Kwang district offering potential Chinese customers to purchase passports and nationalities from four countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Turkey, and Vanuatu.

Instant coffee market set for 5% growth

Thailand’s instant coffee market is expected to grow by 5% this year as Nescafé Thailand plans to allocate 620 million baht for brand communication advertising.

Jojo Dela Cruz, business executive officer of Nestlé (Thai) Ltd.’s coffee and creamer business unit, said that in this year’s first quarter the value of the country’s instant coffee market was 5.7 billion baht, up 5% when compared with the corresponding period last year, while the value of the ready-to-drink coffee market reached 3.8 billion baht, up 10% from the corresponding period last year. 20 million tourists in seven months

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced that from Jan. 1 to July 25, more than 20 million international visitors arrived in Thailand, reflecting a 34% increase from last year.

Tourism from Taiwan and India reached unprecedented levels, largely credited to the visa-free scheme. This initiative allows visitors from 93 countries to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without a visa. SRT offers special tourism train for rainy season

People were being invited to experience romantic vibes in the rainy season on a special Kiha 183 tourism train, which will make 16 trips on seven routes in August and September. The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) said on Sunday that Kiha 183 trips include both one-day and overnight trips during weekends.

As Global Tiger Day rolls around, there’s good news for the big cats in Thailand. The tiger population in the country’s Western Forest Complex (WEFCOM) — an 18,000-square-kilometer (6,950-square-mile) area of forest encompassing 11 national parks and six wildlife sanctuaries — is estimated to have more than tripled between 2007 and 2023, from 41 to 143.

The Minister of Natural Resources and Environment has announced plans to build three elephant training centers in the eastern provinces to tame aggressive wild elephants in the region.

Dengue infections in Thailand reach record 44,387 cases in first six months of 2024

The latest epidemiological surveillance report from Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DCD) has revealed an alarming surge in dengue fever cases in 2024. As of July 10, the number of reported cases has reached 44,387, representing a 1.06-fold increase from the same period in 2023.

African swine fever outbreak reported in Chiang Mai

In a significant and concerning development, Thailand has reported its first outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) for the year, as confirmed by the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH). This outbreak has occurred in Luang Nuea Village, located in the Doi Saket District of Chiang Mai Province.

A tragic incident occurred when a couple on a motorcycle collided with a wild elephant late at night, resulting in the husband’s death and the wife’s injury. The woman, still in shock, reported having no memory of the event.

PM issues new strategies to reduce household debt

At Monday’s meeting of the economic cabinet, PM Srettha Thavisin outlined strategies to address household debt and restore economic confidence. He proposed the Bank of Thailand reduce the minimum credit card repayment rate and said he was planning discussions with financial institutions to extend housing debt terms and find measures to solve the issue of repossessed vehicles. Acknowledging that debt resolution is complex, he emphasised the need for unconventional measures.

Laos shopkeepers not accepting Thai baht

Attracting a lot of attention in Thailand is Laos’ #SaveLaoKip campaign to protect their currency, with Laotian shopkeepers no longer accepting both Thai baht and other foreign currencies but, if necessary, they will give the foreigners a lower rate than that officially set.

Many shops in Laos have kicked off this campaign to only trade in their currency kip and not accept Thai baht. An example is one shop announcing that they will not accept any foreign currencies, with those coming in with Thai currency only getting 30,000 kip for 100 baht. South Korean tourist arrivals expected to reach 1.94 million this year

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is upbeat that South Korean tourist arrivals this year will reach a record 1.94 million, higher than the pre-Covid 1.88 million.

Pattanapong Pongthongcharoen, director of the TAT office in Seoul, said that the negative sentiment among Thai tourists, who have boycotted South Korea, had not affected the desire of South Korean tourists to visit Thailand. Continued …

Electric rate increase under consideration

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) announced a public consultation from yesterday until July 26 to discuss the final electricity tariff adjustment of the year. The proposed adjustments could see electricity bills rise from September to December this year, with costs potentially increasing from 4.18 baht per unit to between 4.65 and 6.01 baht per unit.

The secretary-general and spokesperson of the ERC, Poonpat Leesombatpiboon, revealed that the fuel tariff (FT) might need to be adjusted upwards by 46.8 to 182.9 satang per unit, combined with the base electricity rate of 3.7 baht per unit. This adjustment would result in the electricity tariff for the end of 2024 increasing to between 4.65 and 6.01 baht per unit. Continued …

Heavy rains forecast for most of Thailand from Sunday to Thursday

Thundershowers and isolated heavy rains are likely in some areas of Thailand on Saturday due to the moderate southwest monsoon prevailing over the country, the Thai Meteorological Department said.

From Sunday to Thursday, however, most of Thailand will experience heavy to very heavy rains, as the strong monsoon trough will lie across the north and the northeast regions into an active low-pressure cell over the middle South China Sea, the department warned. Continued …

Thailand expected to see a big jump in number of millionaires in next 5 years

Thailand is expected to see a 24% increase in the number of millionaires over the next five years, propelling the country to ninth place in the world for the most increase in wealthy individuals, according to the recently released UBS Global Wealth Report 2024.

The UBS report highlights a notable rebound in global wealth growth, which reached 4.2% in 2023, offsetting the slump experienced in 2022. When adjusted for inflation, global wealth grew by an impressive 8.4% last year. Continued …

Is 60 the new 40? How population aging is taking shape in ASEAN countries

The proportion of the elderly population in ASEAN and the Plus-3 economies has seen a significant rise. It escalated from 5.1% and 8.1% in 2001 to 7.9% and 15.1% in 2022, respectively. Furthermore, countries like China, Thailand, and Vietnam are projected to shift from aging to aged societies more rapidly than advanced economies such as France and the U.S.

Officers from the Investigation Division of the 2nd Subdivision, Tourist Police Bureau 1, in collaboration with the Chonburi Immigration Office, arrested a Chinese man, Mr. Liu, 39, the leader of a call center scam gang, in front of a restaurant at a mall in Noen Plub Wan Alley of Pattaya City. He was arrested while getting into a luxury white BMW and charged with “being an alien in the country without permission.”

On Thursday, the officers received information that the gang leader of a call center gang, fleeing prosecution in Malaysia after raiding a fellow countryman’s place to collect money, was eventually arrested by Malaysian authorities. Baht appreciation pressured by significant challenges

The Thai economy’s lower potential growth, a weaker current account surplus and increased capital outflows are pressuring baht appreciation over the longer term, say economists.

Roong Sanguanruang, senior vice president for global markets planning at Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri), said the baht faces higher limitations in terms of appreciating against the dollar because of the economy’s reduced growth potential. A House panel on Thursday summoned banks and relevant agencies as part of its investigation into mule accounts used to support Myanmar’s military junta.

The committee in charge of state security, border affairs, national strategy and reform initiated the investigation in response to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)’s report in late June, which revealed that Thai banks were providing financial services to the Myanmar military junta for weapon procurement. Analyst sees scant impact from digital wallet

The government’s flagship digital wallet policy can improve the economy by only 0.4 percentage points, mostly in 2025, after the project’s budget was reduced by 50 billion baht to 450 billion, as uncertainties remain regarding the funding, according to an analyst.

The government subcommittee overseeing the 10,000-baht digital handout scheme decided to scale down the funding of the program to 450 billion baht as legal complications prevented it from utilizing the state-owned Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, relying instead on the budgets for 2024 and 2025. Thailand will allow citizens of more countries to enter the kingdom via visa exemptions starting Monday, the Interior Ministry said on Friday. Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signed four documents to ease travel for foreigners, all of which will take effect on Monday.

Illegal tour firms adopt new tactics

More than a hundred tour operators are at risk of breaking the law for using nominees or a price-dumping strategy, while new fraudulent tactics offer cheap tours disguised as direct sales or multi-level marketing companies, according to the Tourism Department.

Soi 94 resurfacing, drainage improvements planned

Hua Hin municipality has announced that extensive resurfacing work will soon commence on Soi 94, one of the most uneven and damaged road surfaces in central Hua Hin. The project, which includes the installation of new drainage, is expected to take approximately seven months to complete.

The repair work will involve the installation of drainage pipes and resurfacing the road from the western railway intersection to Baan Chang Heng, extending to the far end of Soi 94 where the road turns right. The project scope includes the stretch from the railway tracks toward Lucky 13, Amara Resort, and The Happy Pig, reaching the top of the soi. Continued …

Yet amid such instability, one aspect of Thailand’s governance flourishes: its public-health system.

Thai health care is among the most effective in the world. The average Thai can expect to live to 80, much longer than their regional counterpart (the Southeast Asian figure is 73) and even slightly longer than the average American and European (each roughly 79), according to the latest data from the United Nations. Chinatown fire victims mostly migrant workers

More than 260 people have registered for assistance following the Yaowarat fire on Saturday night in Bangkok’s Chinatown, most of them migrant workers, according to the permanent secretary for human security.

The fire in Trok Pho community started about 8.40pm on Saturday. Sixty-six wooden houses in the community were burned down or badly damaged. Can of Beans raises the issue of the real cost of living for foreigners in Thailand

A can of Heinz beans went viral on social media site TikTok last week. Two young tourists from Ireland and the United Kingdom expressed horror at the price tag of Bt420.

Although probably an error or mistake, it comes with a growing conflict between reports from ordinary people, including expats and Thais, about the cost of living and official Thai government data. It came in a week in which the Ministry of Commerce confirmed 0% inflation for the first six months and when June’s inflation rate was only 0.67%, defying a Reuters poll that predicted 1.13%. Thailand is set to boost renewable energy used in electricity production from 36% to 51% in its latest power-development plan (PDP). Yet, many experts argue that the plan is a blueprint for failure in meeting emissions targets and ensuring energy security.

Prepared by the Energy Ministry, the PDP is the country’s master plan for power production based on forecasts of rising demand over the next 15 to 20 years. More signals surfaced last week indicating Thailand is likely to reverse course on cannabis by shutting down a combined legal CBD and marijuana market projected to reach billions in value. A key drug committee passed a resolution that would limit products made from flowers of both marijuana and industrial hemp to medical applications that require a doctor’s prescription.

The country famously joined a trend toward 1.0% THC by dry weight allowable in hemp crops in 2019, setting a separate limit of 0.2% for food and cosmetics products. Minibus passengers sought help from Nakhon Pathom Highway Police after the drug-addicted driver drove dangerousl  on a trip from the southern province of Prachuap Khiri Khan to Bangkok.

Thailand’s COVID-19 Surge Expected to Peak in July

Thailand faces a significant surge in COVID-19 cases, with infections expected to peak in July, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, chief of Thailand’s Disease Control Department. Bangkok-Vientiane train service begins July 19

A new international train service connecting Bangkok and Vientiane in Laos will begin services on July 19, the State Railway of Thailand announced on Wednesday.

Contractions in auto, property sectors a blow to economic expansion

Contractions in the automotive and property sectors have severely impacted the Thai economy in the first half of the year and prompted several institutes to adjust downward their estimates on economic expansion this year, the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) announced.

Condo association warns of crisis in property sector

The Thai property sector will face challenges in meeting sales targets this year due to a decline in demand and purchasing power, Thai Condominium Assn. President Prasert Taedullayasatit said on Tuesday.

He referred to the Asian financial crisis in 1997 and its impact on property prices, as financial institutions and asset management companies turned to offering non-performing assets at cheaper rates than the original sale prices. “The reason behind the decline in property prices during the Tom Yum Kung crisis was a weakening baht that triggered an increase in the debt burden among business entrepreneurs and banks,” he said. World Bank urges Thailand to invest in infrastructure, green economy

The World Bank has advised the Thai government to boost investment in reviving aging infrastructure and strengthening the green economy, to help drive the country’s economic potential beyond 2.7% growth in the medium term.

The bank forecasts Thai GDP growth of 2.4% in 2024 and 2.8% in 2025. The government’s planned digital wallet initiative is not included in the baseline forecast, but it could potentially enhance near-term growth if implemented, Kiatipong Ariyapruchya, a senior economist for Thailand at the World Bank, told an ecnomic seminar on Wednesday.
