Unsafe dust levels in 51 provinces

Fifty-one of the 77 provinces were shrouded with hazardous levels of ultra-fine dust on Monday morning, most of them in the central plains, the north and the northeast.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said five central plains provinces were blanketed by red (seriously hazardous) levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5). Continued …

Public advised to use N95 mask as PM2.5 in Bangkok at unsafe levels

The public has been advised to wear N95 masks whenever they go outside on Sunday as air pollution in Bangkok remains high, with PM2.5 levels reaching unhealthy levels.

As of 10am on Sunday, the air quality index (AQI) in Bangkok was 187, which is classified as “unhealthy for sensitive groups”. The AQI for PM2.5, which are fine particulates that can penetrate deep into the lungs, is 118. Continued …

PM to submit dust control plan to court

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said on Sunday that he will submit a plan to solve the PM2.5 fine dust problem as ordered by the Chiang Mai Administrative Court within 90 days.

He said the court requires him and the national environment panel to draft a plan in 90 days following a complaint filed by a network of people in the north. Officials will be invited to discuss the matter and draft the plan as ordered by the court, he said. Continued …

Thailand bracing for temperature drop due to cold blast from China

A new blast of cold air is set to lower temperatures by four degrees Celsius, warns the Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD). This weather shift, prompted by a strong high-pressure system from southern China and northern Vietnam, is anticipated to affect the northeastern and eastern parts of Thailand today.

The cold weather and strong winds in the northeast are expected to result in a drop of 2-4 degrees Celsius, while the eastern region will experience a 1-3 degrees Celsius decrease. Focus on food courts as Thailand moves to tackle food waste

Thailand produces 9.7 million tons of food waste per year, or 146 kilograms for each resident, says Pollution Control Department Director-general Preeyaporn Suwanaged.

New tiger discovery in Chumphon province

Three tigers, believed to traverse between Thailand and Myanmar, have been discovered in Chumphon province’s forests. The big cats were detected last Friday in the Tanao Sri Mountain Range, which forms the border between the two countries.

The tigers are suspected of patrolling the forests of Duang Charoen, Nern Thong, and Chong Kamew in the Ta Sae district’s Song Pee Noing subdistrict. According to Attapon Charoenchansa, head of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife, and Plant Conservation (DNP), continuous monitoring suggests that these tigers regularly cross between Thailand and Myanmar. Wild gaurs in rampage in Nakhon Ratchasima

Tourism business operators from Wang Nam Khieo district in Nakhon Ratchasima have put forward initiatives to tackle the escalating number of incidents involving wild gaurs. These large, wild bulls are causing havoc, attacking individuals, and wreaking destruction on crops.

The most recent incident occurred on Jan. 11 when a mother and her seven-year-old daughter were assaulted by a rogue gaur while they were traveling on a motorbike along Highway No. 3052, connecting Wang Nam Khieo and Pak Chong district. The gaur charged at the motorbike, causing it to skid across the road. The young girl was caught in the gaur’s horns and was carried off into the nearby forest as the animal dashed off the road. Thailand has a great potential to become a global medical hub, with 60 hospitals meeting international healthcare standards, the Office of the Board of Investment (BOI) chief said. In their announcements of their fourth quarter financial performance, the five commercial banks —TMBThanachart Bank Plc (TTB), CIMB Thai Bak Plc, SCB X Plc, Krungsri (Bank of Ayudhya) Plc, and Kasikornbank Plc — said their profits were a result of higher net interest income, net fee and services, and mostly effective cost management. New registrations for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), particularly electric cars, reached 76,366 units in 2023, marking a substantial increase from 9,678 units in the previous year. Deadly explosion at fireworks factory leaves all 23 workers dead in Suphanburi

All the 23 workers in a fireworks factory in Suphanburi province were killed in a deadly explosion on Wednesday afternoon, local authorities said. Police and local officials said the accident happened at 3.30pm at the factory in Ban Khoi Ngam or Moo 3 village in Tambon Sala Khao of Muang district.

Authorities believe the 23 workers were assembling the fireworks when suddenly there was an explosion, flattening the factory and killing all of them. Continued …

Rangers in a Phetchabun wildlife sanctuary rescued a baby elephant stuck in a pool of mud and successfully returned it to its herd last week. Ronnarat Sirimakorn, chief of Phetchabun’s Tat Mok National Park, said on Wednesday that a team of rangers spotted the baby elephant stuck in a dry creek at 2pm last Thursday.

Thailand targets 23.1 million MICE visitors in fiscal 2024

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has set a target to attract a minimum of 23.1 million meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) visitors by fiscal 2024. Thailand’s escalating smog crisis: Choking smog in 55 provinces

People in 55 of the 77 provinces were breathing dirty air this morning, with red-coded pollution levels in 20 provinces, mainly in the Central Plains.

The Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) reported at 9am that unsafe levels of particulate matter 2.5 micrometers and less in diameter (PM2.5) ranged from 38.7 to 113.6 micrograms per cubic meter of air over the previous 24 hours. Bottled water contains more plastic particles than thought

A typical one-liter (33-ounce) bottle of water contains some 240,000 plastic fragments on average, according to a new study. Many of those fragments have historically gone undetected, the researchers determined, suggesting that health concerns linked to plastic pollution may be dramatically underestimated.

The peer-reviewed study, published Monday in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, is the first to evaluate bottled water for the presence of “nanoplastics” — plastic particles under 1 micrometer in length, or one-seventieth the width of a human hair. The findings show that bottled water could contain up to 100 times more plastic particles than previously estimated, as earlier studies only accounted for microplastics, or pieces between 1 and 5,000 micrometers. Council of State says no go-ahead for digital wallet yet

The Council of State’s secretary-general rejected claims that the government’s advisory board has given the go-ahead to legislation allowing a 500- billion-baht loan to finance the digital wallet scheme.

Online vendors are required to file taxes for the year 2024, with the Revenue Department mandating online platforms to disclose income data. This directive, effective from Jan. 1, applies to all businesses, including e-commerce, food and product delivery services like Shopee, Lazada, Grab, and TikTok.

These platforms, registered in Thailand and having an annual income exceeding 1 billion baht, are obligated to maintain special accounts. Thailand has welcomed over 600,000 foreign visitors during the first week of 2024, with the Chinese topping the list for the first week of the year. According to a report, Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol, Thailand’s tourism minister, says a total of 605,537 have arrived in the kingdom in the period Jan. 1 – 7.

A Ukrainian man drowned near Bailan Beach on the island of Koh Chang in the eastern province of Trat. He reportedly tried to swim from Koh Chang to Koh Man Nai after an argument with his family.

Locals discovered the dead body near Bailan Beach in the Koh Chang Tai subdistrict, on Koh Chang at around 2pm yesterday, and reported the matter to the village chief, Termsak Sertsri. Foreigner Filmed Urinating Off the Back of TukTuk in Phuket

A video clip of a foreign man who was standing and urinating on the back of a tuk tuk in Patong has gone viral on social media this week, causing outrage and anger from many Thai social media users who demanded the foreigner be arrested and charged to the fullest extent of the law.

In Thailand, it’s very easy to encounter an elephant. Some sites allow quiet observation, as you admire the massive animals from afar. Other tourist venues offer activities like feeding, riding, or bathing with elephants. Many places toss around the term “ethical” when describing the encounters, but they often are not the sanctuaries they promote.

(Editor note: Expat News visited the Elephant Nature Park outside of Chiang Mai, and we have to dispute one warning about not physically interacting with the elephants. Unlike some “sanctuaries”, where the elephants are basically penned in – or chained or caged, pachyderms at Elephant Nature Park mostly are allowed to roam free in the mountainous jungles of the park and visitors are allowed to mingle with them for bathing, feeding and walks. These are rescued elephants and their young, and as long as there is no riding of the elephants, we see no problem with this activity.)

The new year holiday period witnessed a significant drop in road accidents, with 212 fatalities and 1,860 injuries, according to statistics from the Department of Land Transport. A Thai woman has taken to an online forum to vent about her mother-in-law’s nagging over her refusal to iron her husband’s clothes. The woman, who works away from home and returns only on weekends, argues that her husband should be able to iron his clothes.

Thousands of noise complaints from 4am bar closing

Members of the public have filed 5,785 complaints about noise since Dec. 15, when the rule allowing pubs, bars and entertainment venues in selected areas of Bangkok, Phuket, Chonburi, Chiang Mai and Koh Samui in Surat Thani province to remain open until 4am came into effect.

2024 is a year of the Wood Dragon, starting from Feb. 10 (Chinese New Year) and ending on Jan. 28, 2025 (Chinese New Year’s Eve).

The luckiest Chinese zodiac signs in 2024 are monkeys, roosters, and pigs. Then, with not quite so much luck, come oxes, rabbits, goats, and dogs. Dragons’ fortunes will be influenced by “opposition to Tai Sui”.

Speedboat Crashes Into Rocks In Phuket, Killing Russian Girl

The Phuket Regional Harbor Office received a report of a marine accident at 3:30 pm on Dec. 31 from the Andaman Marine Traffic and Safety Control Center, stating that a speedboat carrying seven passengers, the captain and one crew member, totaling nine people, had crashed into the rocks on the shore of Mai Thon Island, Chalong subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket Province.

Six tour boats and a fishing vessel have sunk in the Gulf and the Andaman Sea in the past four days. Two passengers, a skipper and five crew are still missing.

Seventy Three Tourists Rescued after Speedboat Capsized in Satun

A tourist speedboat capsized near Bubu Island, about 3 kilometers from Satun’s Lipe Island, Sunday. The boat carried 73 tourists, including three children and four crew members.
