Hua Hin resort owner makes largest single asset hotel transaction on record

Thai developer Property Perfect has sold the Hyatt Regency Sukhumvit in Bangkok for 5.055 billion baht (US$155 million). The property owned by Grand Asset Hotels & Property represents Thailand’s largest single asset hotel transaction on record.

The sale is part of the company’s strategic plan to strengthen its financial position and reduce debt. Cabinet to approve extra holidays for 2025

Bangkok calls for ‘foam-free’ Loy Krathong Festival

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is asking city residents to go “zero-foam” for this year’s Loy Krathong Festival, urging those who want to take part in the ceremony to look into biodegradable floats to help protect the environment.

The deputy director of City Hall’s Environment Department, Worranut Suaykhakhao, said despite pleas to go foam-free, about 20,877 out of the 639,828 floats collected by BMA’s waste collection units after last year’s Loy Krathong Festival were made from foam. Continued …

Rising tides threaten to submerge fishing village south of Bangkok

A coastal village in Thailand has already begun to witness the dire consequences of global warming, as its land shrinks and its residents flee from the rising tides. ERC mulls 31% electricity tariff hike despite lower fuel costs

Businesses and households are facing a significant decision regarding the future of their electricity costs as the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) considers changes to the power tariff. Despite a projected decrease in fuel costs, the ERC is evaluating whether to maintain the current rate or implement an increase of 26% to 31% early next year.

The existing tariff, set at 4.18 baht per kilowatt-hour, is in effect until Dec. 31. A public opinion survey is currently being conducted online by the ERC, with the results influencing the new rate to be announced for January to April 2025. Continued …

Five Injured in Bus-Truck Collision in Pran Buri

A traffic collision involving a tour bus and a Isuzu four-wheeled truck occurred on yesterday afternoon, leaving five people injured. The crash took place at kilometer marker 237+500 in Pran Buri district, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province.

According to the Prachuap Khiri Khan Highway Police Rescue Radio Center, the bus collided with the truck around 13:55. None of the 20, bus passengers sustained any injuries, but the passengers in the truck, carrying banquet supplies, were less fortunate. Continued …

Stormy weather forecast

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a warning for potential severe weather conditions affecting 28 provinces, with the southern region facing heavy to very heavy rainfall that could lead to flash floods and forest runoff. Meanwhile, cooler temperatures are expected in northern Thailand.

In the southern region (east coast), thunderstorms are expected in 70% of the area, with heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas, including Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Temperatures will range from 22 to 24°C to 29 to 33°C, with northeast winds at 15 to 35 kilometers per hour and wave heights of 1 to 2 meters. Continued …

Thai woman walks as Erawan Shrine case crumbles

A Thai court sent shockwaves throughout the capital of Bangkok after clearing Thai woman Wanna Suansan of charges related to the devastating 2015 Erawan Shrine bombing that claimed 20 lives and injured 120 others.

Wanna, a Thai national, was acquitted by Bangkok’s Southern Criminal Court yesterday. The attack, which occurred in the heart of Bangkok, resulted in 20 fatalities and left 120 injured, primarily affecting Chinese tourists visiting the popular spiritual site. Continued …

Chachoengsao courier delivers 6-foot mattress on motorcycle – video

A delivery rider found himself in a humorous predicament when tasked with transporting a 6-foot mattress on his motorcycle. The unexpected delivery, which took place Wednesday, in Chachoengsao province, left the customer so impressed by the courier’s determination that he tipped the rider several hundred baht.

Baht slumps after US election

The Thai baht reached a two-month low on Thursday, with projections it might dip below 34.5 to the U.S. dollar shortly. This currency pressure follows predictions that the Federal Reserve will maintain higher interest rates longer than anticipated after Donald Trump clinched victory in the recent U.S. election.

According to the Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research), the baht was quoted at 34.34-36 against the dollar, dropping from the prior day’s rate of 34.17. A declining yuan has further weighed down the baht. This trend is mirrored in other currencies like the yen, all suffering due to the dollar’s surge post-election. Continued …

Transport minister plans road safety campaign for motorcyclists

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has announced a plan aimed at promoting road safety, particularly targeting motorcyclists and their passengers who fail to wear crash helmets.

Ultra-luxury houses boom amid slumping property market

Luxury houses priced at more than 100 million baht per unit have enjoyed over 450 billion baht in sales in the past 10 years, with some 394 new units being supplied to the market since 2015, property consultancy firm Colliers International reported on Wednesday.

While the rest of Thailand’s property market is contracting due to the high rejection rate of housing loans by financial institutions, buyers of ultra-luxury houses often pay in cash and therefore do not have to apply for loans, Collier’s research director Phattarachai Taweewong explained. Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers are offering new models and up to 100,000 baht discounts in a bid to stimulate sales in the remainder of this year, according to a report on Thursday.

The Tourism and Sports Ministry has vowed to register unregistered hotels through a new draft within one year, aiming to maintain the long-haul tourist market as the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is implemented in two years, which requires adhering to strict environmental standards.

If you’d asked me three years ago about Klong Wan, Thailand, I wouldn’t have known what to say. I wouldn’t even have been able to find it on a map. But after a three-month stay in Thailand a few years ago, I found myself holed up in Klong Wan for a deliciously unexpected 10 days of bliss.

Klong Wan is a remote village on the Gulf of Thailand in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. Most visitors know Prachuap Khiri Khan thanks to the buzzy beach resort of Hua Hin — a seemingly endless strip of white-sand beaches dotted with high-rise hotels and pulsing beach clubs. EGAT aims to turn hydropower dams into giant ‘batteries’

Three more hydropower dams operated by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) will be developed into giant “batteries” under a 90-billion-baht investment to supply clean power to the country, easing concerns about insufficient electricity generated by solar and wind power.

EGAT is conducting a feasibility study at the dams, aiming to adopt a pumped storage hydropower (PSH) system for hydroelectric energy storage, said Tawatchai Sumranwanich, deputy governor of EGAT. Continued …

Singapore’s Changi Airport to hike fees to fund upgrades

Changi Airport in Singapore will charge passengers and airlines more to fly in and out of the city-state to help finance a S$2.3-billion (US1.75 billion) upgrade of its terminals. Thai Textile Society organizes Hua Hin trip

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. A survey of readers from among expats living in Thailand, in addition to those considering a move to Thailand, shows that a majority may not file tax returns as required by March 31, 2025. Furthermore, the poll revealed that 55% of respondents had considered traveling out of Thailand during 2024 to avoid a tax liability.

The poll comes as the Thai government last week revealed that its tax collection target for 2024 had not been met. This shortfall was reportedly blamed on an exchange rate blip due to a strengthening baht. Continued …

Heavy rain and flash flood warnings for southern Thailand

Heavy rain is set to lash the southern regions of Thailand, prompting the Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) to issue warnings of flash floods and overflowing mountain streams in 10 provinces. Meanwhile, the northern areas will experience a drop in temperatures.

High blood pressure was the top medical condition among universal healthcare service outpatients in 2023, according to Thailand’s National Health Security Office (NHSO).

M16 rifle linked to over 25 deaths in southern Thailand

A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. The NESDC Office explained that living in their own houses also counted as a cost poor families did not have to bear. Continued …

Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

The company’s managing director, Kessara Thanyalakpark, said that rising household debt was among factors that hurt Bangkokians’ ability to purchase houses. “Currently, there is a disconnect between the demand for housing and the high prices set by property developers,” she said. Continued …

Thai exports recover in first nine months of 2024

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. In the first nine months, Thailand’s imports amounted to $229.1328 billion, a 5.5% increase, resulting in a trade deficit of $5.9568 billion, or nearly 200 billion baht. Continued …

One issue the private sector has urged the government to address is the continuous influx of Chinese goods into Thailand, which significantly impacts 23 industry groups, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Thailand is facing the impact of plastic waste on greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity and public health, according to a report by the Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF).

Chiang Mai backs waste-to-energy plant

The Chiang Mai Authority has backed a Thai-Chinese waste-to-energy power plant that is expected to take two years to complete. The joint investment agreement, valued at 2.3 billion baht, was signed on Friday.

The Thai cabinet has decided to grant Thai citizenship to about 483,000 migrants who have been living in Thailand since 1984 and children born in Thailand to parents in ethnic minority groups.

Spokesman for the prime minister’s office, Jirayu Huangsap, said that since these documented migrant workers have been working in Thailand for a long time, the cabinet feels that it is appropriate to grant them Thai citizenship, so they can travel freely and still beneficially contribute to the development of the Thai economy. Tourists’ Visa card spending surges 90%

Inbound tourists’ spending on Visa credit cards this year is expected to be 90% higher than the 2019 level, a higher rate than that of Thai travelers overseas, who were hampered by a sluggish economy.

People living in Bangkok and its surrounding areas are being advised by the Pollution Control Department to get ready for the first wave of PM2.5 (particles that are 2.5 microns or less in diameter) in the air from Thursday until Sunday, due to the arrival of a moderate cold front from China and poor air circulation.

According to police reports submitted to the Senate committee on public participation, human rights, and consumer protection, all 14 defendants and suspects involved in the two Tak Bai massacre cases have left Thailand. Koh Samui Villas Encounter Demolition Delay as Legal Dispute Unfolds

In a standoff on Koh Samui yesterday, local authorities’ attempts to enforce demolition of 11 unauthorized luxury villas hit a legal roadblock. Bangkok motorists may face congestion fee

The Transport Ministry will spend six months to a year studying the feasibility of imposing a congestion fee on motorists using busy roads in Bangkok, said Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit.

Foreigners snapped up 33% of the luxury condominium units sold by CBRE Thailand in the first half of 2024, increasing from 25% recorded during the same period of the previous year, the property agent/real estate consultant said on Monday.

The rising demand for luxury condos among foreigners is in line with the increasing number of expats in Thailand, standing at 188,232 people as of the end of 2023, said Artitaya Kasemlawan, CBRE’s head of residential sales, adding that the number is close to that of before the Covid-19 pandemic. Some 14.1 million people classified as vulnerable have received the government’s 10,000-baht cash handout, according to the chief of the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO).

Cutting policy rate the right move: Thai private sector

The Thai private sector says the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s cutting of the policy rate by 25 basis points, from 2.50% to 2.25% per annum, is well suited to the country’s current economic situation and will help several sectors, notably exports and tourism.

In a bid to help reduce the public’s debt burden, the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 5:2 on Wednesday to lower the key policy rate with immediate effect after over a year of holding the rate at 2.50%. Continued …

Thai growth upgraded as cash handout improves outlook

Analysts have upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and next to 2.8% and 3%, respectively, thanks to the government’s cash handout lifting the economy, but warned of an “economic cliff” in 2026 if no new growth engine is introduced.

Kiatnakin Phatra Research (KKP) and BofA Global Research both increased their Thai GDP outlooks for 2024 from 2.6% to 2.8%, with the forecasts for next year rising from 2.8% to 3.0%. They noted the government’s 10,000-baht cash handouts will temporarily help the Thai economy. Continued …

Industrial sentiment dips in September

The Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) continued to decline to 87.1 points in September, in part because of the impact of severe flooding and slow economic growth. The index, which gauges business confidence among manufacturers, stood at 87.7 points in August, down from 89.3 points in July.

The Board of Investment said that many foreign printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers have been seeking special privileges for their investments worth 162 billion baht over the past year. BOI Secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said on Wednesday that most of these circuit board manufacturers were from China or Taiwan, and they have applied for BOI privileges in 95 projects.

Thailand plans $1.7 billion of soft loans for property sector

The government is planning to offer 55 billion baht ($1.66 billion) of soft loans to support the property sector and help boost the economy, a deputy finance minister said today. The plan will be submitted to the cabinet for approval, Paopoom Rojanasakul said in a message to reporters.

Thailand’s budding mangrove restoration plans spark both hope and concern

Standing on a coastal boardwalk overlooking the upper Gulf of Thailand, Wisut Leksomboon points to two mature mangrove trees whose branches intertwine like lovers’ limbs.

“We found that by planting two seedlings close together, they can offer each other support as they grow. These trees are about 30 years old,” Wisut said at the Mangrove Nature School in Bang Kaew, a village roughly two hours’ drive south of Bangkok in Samut Songkhram province. FedEx Expands Electric Vehicle Fleet in Thailand

Federal Express Corp., one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, has advanced toward its vehicle electrification goals by introducing four new zero-tailpipe emissions electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet in Thailand. The expansion builds on the success of its initial launch of EVs in 2022 as part of the company’s efforts to transition to an all-electric parcel pickup and delivery (PUD) fleet by 2040.

The new EVs will support parcel PUD operations within high-traffic areas in Bangkok and Pathum Thani such as Chaeng Watthana, Tiwanon, Lat Phrao, Ram Inthra, Ngam Wong Wan, Prasert Manukit, Sukhonthasawat, Thammasart, and Chiengrak. Talks with Laos focus on renewable effort

Thai authorities are planning to hold talks with the Laos government to jointly promote more use of renewable energy across borders, accelerating efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

More than 200 climate activists on Monday gathered in front of the United Nations headquarters in Bangkok urging the Thai government to stop the climate change laws and carbon credit system that benefit large corporations.

New app use mandatory for driving licenses

The Department of Land Transport (DLT) is cracking down on security, rolling out mandatory identity checks with the ThaID app from Nov. 1 for anyone booking driving license and vehicle registration slots.

Seksom Akkharaphan, the deputy director-general and official spokeperson of the DLT, announced the new pre-booking system. Cabinet approves aid package for flood victims in 50 provinces

The cabinet approved a package to help flood victims yesterday, both individuals and businesses in 50 provinces, which includes tax exemptions, soft loans, debt moratoria, interest rate cuts and loan guarantees.

Government spokesman Jirayu Huangsap said that the rehabilitation package is on top of the 9,000 baht one-time financial help provided by the government to about 67,000 households impacted by flooding this year. Continued …

Heavy rain sparks landslide warnings in southern Thailand

The Flood, Storm, and Landslide Disaster Relief Operations Center has issued warnings to residents in nine southern provinces, as heavy rains move southward, increasing the risk of landslides. Video: Elephant overturns vehicle with the driver inside

An elephant overturned a pickup truck on the side of the road with the driver inside, as it is believed that the latter did not wait for the animal to cross the road. The incident happened about 128 kilometers east of the capital Bangkok in rural Chachoengsao province Saturday evening.

13 million speed pills seized in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Highway police seized over 13 million methamphetamine pills and arrested two couriers in Bang Saphan district of Prachuap Khiri Khan on Monday.

The death toll from a devastating bus blaze tragedy on Vibhavadi Rangsit Road in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok has soared to 25. Among the victims were 22 young students and three teachers.

According to a grim update, the ill-fated coach was packed with 44 students, aged between three and nine, along with their teachers from Wat Khao Phraya Sangkharam School in Uthai Thani. Thailand needs to revamp its rules for school bus operations

As details emerge of the gruesome school bus fire yesterday that claimed the lives of 22 young children and three teachers, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Transport need to start to ponder on the revamping the rules governing use of vehicles used for transporting children.

Water levels in Phitsanulok rise as Yom River receives upstream runoff

The flooding in Phitsanulok province, particularly in the Bang Rakam Model area, is being impacted by the overflow from the Yom River basin, which is flooding both the old and main channels of the Yom River. The affected areas include Phrom Phiram, Mueang and Bang Rakam districts.

Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has assured the public that despite this year’s rainfall and floodwaters being on par with 2011’s catastrophic floods, a disaster of similar scale is not anticipated. Speaking yesterday, Anutin noted that although Thailand is also impacted by water released from neighboring countries, manageable measures are being undertaken to mitigate potential flooding impacts.

Chiang Mai City: Floods Expected to Surpass 2011 Levels

The flooding in Chiang Mai continues to worsen as the Ping River reaches record-breaking levels. As of 9pm last night, the water level in the city of Chiang Mai had risen to 4.83 meters, surpassing the 2022 flood level. Authorities expect the level to climb above 5.10 meters, exceeding the 2011 flood levels.

Reports from Chiang Mai indicate that the situation remains critical, as new floodwaters from Mae Taeng District have reached the city. The flooding has expanded, inundating major economic areas such as the Night Bazaar, San Pa Khoi Market, and parts of the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, with water depths ranging from 50 to 100 cm. The severe flooding that has gripped much of northern and northeastern Thailand is taking a heavy toll on the country’s economy, with the Thai Chamber of Commerce estimating damages at over 242 billion baht.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra presided over the handing out of 10,000-baht to the first group of recipients on Wednesday morning and pledged to hold the second and third phases soon. Playful rain, cheerful mist at Ban E-Tong

As soon as we arrived at Ban E-Tong, a small village in Kanchanaburi province, in the late afternoon, everyone found themselves in a kingdom engulfed by mist. The familiar scenes were almost entirely swallowed up. We willingly stepped out of the car, humbly embracing the clarity of the season.

The journey, more than 300 kilometers from Bangkok, felt longer. Although the M81 motorway has begun trial service, significantly reducing travel time, once we reached Thong Pha Phum district, we still had to drive another 70km up the mountain to Ban E-Tong. B.Grimm Power Secures 25-Year Solar Power Agreements With EGAT And PEA

B.Grimm Power Public Co. (B.Grimm Power) has signed 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) through its subsidiaries and joint ventures. The agreements cover eight companies and represent a combined total contracted capacity of 323.3 megawatts (MW) for solar farm projects.

The scheduled commercial operation dates (SCOD) for these projects will span from 2026 to 2030, contributing to Thailand’s renewable energy goals. This initiative aligns with B.Grimm Power’s “GreenLeap-Global and Green Strategy,” which aims to support the rapidly evolving energy markets and help Thailand meet its net-zero greenhouse gas emissions target by 2065.
