Toxic smog disrupts Bangkok flights as PM2.5 levels soar

Bangkok’s toxic air pollution has reached hazardous levels, forcing flight diversions and sparking health warnings across the city. On Sunday morning, several flights were diverted from Don Mueang International Airport to Suvarnabhumi Airport, as thick smog reduced visibility to just 150 meters.

Finance Ministry mulls response to Trump’s tariff policy

The government plans to launch measures to cope with uncertainties arising from U.S. President Donald Trump’s import-tariff policy, Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul said yesterday.

Thai Exports Surge by 8.7% in December Amid Looming Trade War Concerns

In December, Thai exports surged by 8.7% year-on-year, extending a six-month growth streak. The total export value reached USD24,765.9 million, surpassing forecasts from SCB EIC and the Reuters Poll. Hua Hin hotels’ occupancy rate up 7.7% in 2024

Thailand’s luxury hotels experienced strong growth in average daily rates (ADR) throughout 2024, increasing by 5.3% year-on-year and 42.7% compared to 2019, according to STR, a global leader in hotel industry research.

Occupancy rates in seven of Thailand’s tourist cities showed steady growth throughout last year, signaling the continued recovery of the Thai hotel industry. Thai FDA approves kratom use for health and economic benefits

Swiss Dog Owner Defies PKK Beach Ban

A Swiss man has reignited controversy by defying a ban on walking his dogs at Suan Luang Beach, Bang Saphan district, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, despite previous attacks on tourists. The issue, which first drew widespread attention in August 2024, resurfaced after Mathias, the dog owner, was spotted on the beach on Jan. 20 with four unleashed dogs, two large and two small.

On Thursday, Thai and foreign tourists joined residents of Suan Luang Beach to lodge a formal complaint with the Pong Prasad Subdistrict Administrative Organization (SAO). They reported that Mathias, who had been ordered to remove his dogs from the area while legal proceedings were ongoing, has continued to disregard the ban, raising fears for public safety. Alarm sounds over hazardous air pollution

The government has announced urgent measures to combat the PM2.5 pollution crisis, including offering free bus and electric train rides and asking private companies to allow employees to work from home. The prime minister has instructed agencies to implement urgent, short-term measures to address it.

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) has ordered Thap Lan National Park in Prachin Buri to stop the controlled burning of a 600-rai area in the park after facing heavy criticism for creating air pollution.

Bangkok’s air quality plummeted to hazardous levels, with PM2.5 dust particles soaring to the orange health-threatening category across all 50 districts, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reported today.

The average PM2.5 concentration in the city reached 47.6 µg/m³ this morning, significantly exceeding the safe limit of 37.5 µg/m³. Corporate income tax cut to 10% in SEZs

The Revenue Department has reduced the corporate income tax rate for businesses in special economic zones (SEZs) to 10% for 10 years to promote investment in the zones.

According to Pinsai Suraswadi, director-general of the department, the tax reduction was approved by the cabinet on Jan. 13 and the department issued a royal decree to implement the tax reduction in SEZs. The second phase of the government’s 10,000-baht cash handout will begin on Jan 27, two days earlier than planned, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira said yesterday. An 18-year- old boy has been arrested after attacking his mother’s ex-husband yesterday with a machete, severing his arm in a fit of rage. The incident, captured on video, occurred in the Prachuap Siri area of Prachuap Khiri Khan municipality, leaving the 54-year-old victim critically injured.

The violent altercation reportedly began as an argument outside a grocery store, where the teenager confronted the man for insulting his biological father. 54% tariff on wine imports eliminated ‘indefinitely’

Thailand is cutting alcohol taxes and tariffs in a bid to lower the cost of a night out and attract more tourists. A 54% tariff on wine imports will be “exempted indefinitely”, according to local media accounts of a Thai cabinet meeting, while excise duties on locally produced wine will be cut to 10% or below.

The measure is designed not only to expand the budding domestic industry, but also to add to supplies of less-expensive alcohol. The government had in recent years increased tariffs on wine in a bid to raise revenues. Finance Ministry to roll out /Easy e-Receipt’ to boost consumption

The Finance Ministry will seek cabinet approval next week for the “Easy e-Receipt” scheme, under which consumers who spend up to 50,000 baht on products or services will be eligible for an income tax deduction to promote domestic spending.

The scheme would cover consumer spending made from Jan. 1. The spending can only be at stores that can issue electronic receipts and cannot be used for spending on cigarettes, beer, wine, liquor, other tobacco products, cars, motorcycles, boats, mobile phone services, public utilities, fuel, internet services, electricity or non-life insurance premiums. New Thai E-Visa scheme will not affect tourists from 93 visa-free countries

Citizens of 93 countries eligible for visa-free access to Thailand can continue to travel as normal without having to apply for the online E-Visa set to take effect as of Jan. 1. The new scheme is only applicable to those coming for non-tourism purposes from the 93 countries, as well as citizens of countries that require visas, for tourism and otherwise. Upgrade of Hua Hin Airport to continue next year

Transport Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri said on Saturday the ministry had ordered the Department of Airports, the Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, and other agencies to develop Hua Hin’s operations, including acquiring a certificate to operate it as an international airport.

Danai Ruangsorn, director-general of the Department of Airports (DoA), said the development plan for Hua Hin Airport consists of two major projects. The first, expanding the runway, has been completed. The second, work on related infrastructure aspects of the airport, such as the runway tunnel over the highway, still need 300 billion baht and budget approval. Continued …

“It will be the end of Hua Hin as a laid back beach town resort. Tourist operators from China, India and Russia will promote Hua Hin as a place to have a vacation.”

“Heard this rubbish for years and they cannot even get a single service yet from Singapore or KL . And, of course, if you noticed the traffic congestion already in peak season, and the new train station, the road system will also need upgrades. Have they planned for that?”

Canada is the leading country worldwide for essential healthcare coverage, according to The World Health Organization’s (WHO) World Health Statistics 2024 report. The organization ranked 194 countries based on a selection of indicators of key health concerns, such as reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health, infectious diseases, noncommunicable diseases and service capacity and access.

Wild Elephant Kills Man in Prachinburi

Yesterday, a wild elephant from Khao Ang Rue Nai Wildlife Sanctuary crossed into a village in Prachinburi Province, fatally attacking a 45-year-old man near a sugarcane field.

The Kabin Buri Police Station was notified of the incident in the early morning. The victim was found dead on the edge of a sugarcane field. Construction Workers Found Dead After Landslide on Koh Samui

In an incident on Koh Samui, Surat Thani, a landslide caused by heavy rain buried the makeshift shelters of construction workers, leaving two men from Myanmar missing. The workers were stationed at a site where four vacation homes were being constructed located on a hillside.

The landslide struck around 4 am yesterday. Police Detain 2 Suspects After a Bomb in a Border Province Killed 3

Thai police on Saturday said two suspects were in custody as authorities investigated a bombing in the north that killed at least three people and injured dozens of others.
