Nationwide Alcohol Sales Ban Set Thursday as Thailand Marks End of Buddhist Lent

The end of Buddhist Lent, Awk Phansa, will take place on Thursday, and a nationwide sales ban on alcohol will be enforced for 24 hours.

Under the Alcohol Control Act, this ban applies to all establishments except duty-free shops in international airports. The official prohibition runs from midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 16, to midnight on Thursday, Oct. 17. Continued …

Weather warning for heavy rain in 40 provinces

Thailand’s Meteorological Department issued another serious weather warning for 40 provinces, urging residents, especially in Bangkok, its surrounding areas, the southern region, and the eastern region, to prepare for heavy rainfall affecting up to 70% of these regions.

In the southern region, the eastern coast will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with some areas getting heavy rain. Provinces affected include Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. The temperatures will be between 23-25°C at the lowest and 30-34°C at the highest. New cap for private hospital claims

The Social Security Office (SSO) will have to reimburse hospitals contracted to provide healthcare under the social security system a fixed rate of 12,000 baht per patient per year in case of high-cost treatments, the government says.

Khao Kheow zoo logs over 30,000 visitors over weekend

Over 30,000 people visited Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chon Buri over the long weekend holiday period, as admission fees were scrapped for kids under 12 and adults over 60 to mark King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great’s Memorial Day, which fell on Sunday.

Bt23 billion parliament complex has some problems

Last week, officials at Thailand’s parliament called in a former Bangkok MP to witness ongoing problems that staff and engineers at the building are dealing with. The former MP was told of ongoing issues with toilet water flooding part of the building. In addition, a ceiling collapsed in a banqueting area at the end of September, while important documents were being destroyed by the overflow.

Furthermore, an escalator has been flooded so often that it has now been deemed irreparable. Three people perished in flood-related incidents in Nakhon Si Thammarat and Yala yesterday as the southern border region braces for more rain, potential flash floods, and forest runoff.

Two of the victims were in Phrom Khiri district, Nakhon Si Thammarat, where three tourists were caught off guard by forest runoff while visiting Wang Lung waterfall in the late afternoon. The Mun River burst its banks on Saturday morning, sending a huge volume of water to flood paddy fields and low-lying areas in Phimai district of Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Water levels in the river were high in several locations, particularly upstream areas of Phimai Dam.

As the dam exceeded its holding capacity by 3. 6 million cubic meters, irrigation officials at the Thung Samrit water operation and maintenance project had to open all six sluice gates, allowing water to flow downstream into the Mun River and protecting economic areas from flooding. Continued …

The Flood, Storm, and Landslide Disaster Relief Operations Center has provided an update on recovery efforts in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai province, where flash floods and mudslides have caused significant damage.

Jirayu Huangsap, spokesperson for the center, reported that multiple agencies are working to clear mud and debris from homes and businesses, with the Ministry of Labor employing 400 workers to assist in the cleanup across affected communities. Flooding ravages Chiang Mai district known for elephant parks

Apple stuck her trunk out of the swollen river like a snorkel, paddling desperately to stay afloat. But the 2-ton, 15-year-old elephant was no match for the flooding that inundated the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai last week. By the time a team of rescuers saw her, she had been swept more than a mile downriver.

“It was heartbreaking to see an animal so strong struggling to stay afloat,” said Pasit Insamran, one of the rescuers, describing the incident Friday. “We kept shouting at her, hoping she would follow the sound and have the strength to swim closer to the shore so we could rescue her.” Continued …

Addressing the challenges facing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) today, Kriengkrai Thiennukul, chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), noted that over the past 40 years Thailand’s strengths have been first, a large workforce, second, cheap labor, third, low-cost land, and fourth, a strategic location as a regional investment hub.

“Today, we face challenges, as only one of these strengths remains — our central position as a regional connection point,” Kriengkrai remarked. Suitability index for buying property and a new car continues to fall

The Center for Economic and Business Forecasting at the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) has reported that the suitability index of purchasing a new car in September 2024 declined for the seventh consecutive month, reaching its lowest point since March 2023. The index for September 2024 was recorded at 67.0, down from 70.2 in August.

In September, 9.7% of consumers believed it was a suitable time to purchase a new car, 47.6% were unsure, and 42.7% deemed it unsuitable. That compares with 10.5%, 49.2% and 40.3% considering it suitable, being unsure or feeling it was unsuitable, respectively. Continued … 

UAE firm EDGNEX to invest $1 billion in data center projects in Thailand

Dubai-based global digital infrastructure company EDGNEX Data Centers by DAMAC has announced a joint venture with PROEN Crop, a leading Thailand technology provider, to invest US$1 billion (32 billion baht) in several data center projects in the kingdom.

With a 70% stake in the joint venture, EDGNEX will lead the operation in data services to fulfill increasing needs in AI technology and data processing in the Southeast Asian region, DAMAC founder Hussain Sajwani said. Continued …

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued another warning for continuous heavy rainfall impacting 43 provinces, including Bangkok and southern regions, with 70% of the areas affected, posing risks of flash floods.

The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with very heavy rainfall expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. Flood-related bacterial infections on the rise

Thailand’s Disease Control Department is alerting the public to a rapid rise in cases of Leptospirosis and Melioidosis during the rainy season and floods. They are bacterial infections to which children are particularly prone and which require close monitoring.

Phuket’s reservoirs are bursting at the seams, with Bang Niew Dam in Srisoonthorn now at 103% capacity. The island is bracing for more rain and potential flash floods through Saturday, as the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of continued downpours.

New Bangkok Rules Limit Street Vendors to Designated Zones

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has introduced new rules to regulate street vendors, aiming to clear pavements and create more organized, hawker-center-style areas. A team of Department of Special Investigation (DSI) police, together with Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) officials, raided houses and commercial buildings at several locations across Kanchanaburi that had been turned into Bitcoin mining dens and effectively stolen over 100 million baht in electricity annually.

Finance Ministry calls for weaker baht, wants 2024 rate cut

The Ministry of Finance ratcheted up pressure on the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to cut interest rates to boost the economy and weaken the baht, just a day after an influential former governor warned against government meddling in the central bank.

Train derails between Nong Sala and Cha Am

A special express diesel train, designated as Train 43 (Bangkok Apivatan–Surat Thani), encountered an incident this morning while traveling between the Nong Sala and Cha Am stations. The train was reported to have derailed due to a failure in the left third axle.

The derailment occurred at approximately 10:05 a.m. at signal point STHL 178/1-2, shortly after the train passed through Nong Sala at 10:04 a.m. The train was comprised of three carriages and, fortunately, no injuries were reported among passengers or crew members. Authorities have indicated that further updates will be forthcoming, and train services to Hua Hin are temporarily halted as a precautionary measure. – huahin.locality.guide

Grief and anger as Thai town holds mass cremation for 23 school bus fire victims

Mourners wept and monks prayed at a cremation ceremony Tuesday in a small town in central Thailand for 23 young students and teachers who died in last week’s bus fire on a school field trip.

A large cremation site was set up close to the temple in Lan Sak town, whose compound hosts the school that was attended by the victims. Several furnaces with tall chimneys were erected, with floral adornments placed in front of them. Continued …

New law lets buyers check before paying

A new law allowing customers to open packages of products they ordered online before paying for them has taken effect, according to the Royal Thai Police (RTP).

According to Prime Minister’s Office Minister Jiraporn Sindhuprai, the notification was announced in the Royal Gazette on July 5 and went into effect on Oct. 3, giving logistic and delivery companies time to adjust to the new law. Continued …

Private hospitals threaten to quit social security system

More than 70 private hospitals nationwide have indicated they will leave the social security system if there is no increase in reimbursements from the state.

Thai math, science students bring home a gold mine of medals

Thai students have earned 24 medals — including five golds — at the 2024 International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for primary school students in China. The prestigious event was held in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, from Oct. 1 to 6.

Flooding in 19 provinces

Flooding persists in 19 provinces in the north, the northeast, central plains and the south, affecting more than 66,000 households.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation on Tuesday reported there were still floods in Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, Phitsanulok, Nakhon Sawan and Sukhothai in the north; Udon Thani, Kalasin, Chaiyaphum, Maha Sarakham and Ubon Ratchathani provinces in the northeast; Sing Buri, Suphan Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya and Nakhon Pathom in the central plains; and Songkhla in the south. Thailand hikes flood compensation to 9,000 baht per family

The Cabinet approved the Interior Ministry’s proposal to increase the flood compensation per family to 9,000 baht from the initial criteria, Interior Ministry spokesman Traisuree Taisaranakul said on Tuesday.

Initially, the plan was to base the compensation on the days the houses were flooded. For instance, families were to be paid 5,000, 7,000 or 9,000 baht if their homes were flooded for less than 30 days, between 31-60 days and more than 60 days, respectively. Govt offers Bt10,000 to all flood-affected households

The government will distribute 10,000 baht to households affected by flooding nationwide to help cover cleanup expenses.

Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said that the Comptroller General’s Department had approved a budget allocation request from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM). BMA warns 16 communities outside flood levees to prepare for floods

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) issued an urgent warning on Tuesday for residents of 16 communities in seven districts to be prepared for possible flooding from Oct. 13 to 23. These areas are not protected by flood levees.

Three zones in Lamphum province have been inundated by floodwaters flowing downstream from Chiang Mai, the Royal Irrigation Department reported on Tuesday.

BMI, a Fitch Solutions company, is maintaining a positive outlook for consumer spending in Thailand throughout 2024, as growth continues in sectors such as retail, hospitality, tourism and gastronomy.

Real household spending (calculated at 2010 prices) is projected to grow by 3.6% year-on-year, decelerating from the 11.2% estimated for 2023, as consumer spending stabilizes from the volatility witnessed from 2020-23, induced by Covid lockdowns and a subsequent remarkable recovery. Customs Dept sets 122.2-billion-baht revenue goal for 2025

The Customs Department has announced that it expects to make 122.2 billion baht in fiscal 2025, in line with its collection of 117.95 billion baht in revenue during fiscal 2024.

The Board of Investment (BOI) said today it had approved a US$400-million investment by tire-maker Continental to expand its existing facility in Thailand, which is the world’s second largest tire producer after China.

Toxic smog returns to Greater Bangkok

Several areas in Bangkok and nearby provinces were blanketed with hazardous levels of smog on Tuesday, the pollution trapped in stagnant air.

At least 2 dead as flood victims await evacuation in Chiang Mai

Evacuations are underway to help people stranded at numerous locations in Muang and Saraphi districts of Chiang Mai province, which were heavily hit by the overflowing Ping River from late Saturday night.

The level of the Ping River at the Nawarat Bridge in Muang district reached a historic high of 5.30 meters on Saturday night. The level declined to 5.15 meters at 4am and 5 meters at 8am on Sunday. Continued …

Cleanup begins in Chiang Mai as flood recedes

Chiang Mai Municipality started a major cleanup on Monday as the huge flood that paralyzed the northern city began draining off.

Two elephants drown at Chiang Mai’s Elephant Nature Park

A religious ceremony was held to bid farewell to “Fah Sai” and “Ploy Thong”, two female elephants from the Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai province, who were washed away by a flash flood on Friday.

Rescue of more than 100 jumbos from flooded sanctuary in Chiang Mai accomplished

More than 100 elephants were safely evacuated over Friday and Saturday from the flooded Elephant and Environment Foundation, in Mae Taeng district of Chiang Mai province, according to the Elephant Conservation Center in Lampang province.

The center said that it received a call for help from the foundation on Friday morning and immediately sent a team to assist. DDC warns against uncooked pork after 12 deaths in Thailand

The Department of Disease Control (DDC) issued a warning yesterday regarding the consumption of uncooked pork, following 12 fatalities linked to Streptococcus suis in four provinces in the lower northeastern region of Thailand.

Thailand faces severe weather conditions today, as the Meteorological Department (TMD) issues warnings of heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flash floods across 51 provinces. PEA leads network partners to restore electricity system for flood victims

From the situation of flash floods, forest runoff and landslides from Typhoon Yangi and Typhoon Soulik, more than 100,000 people in the northern and northeastern regions have been affected, causing widespread damage, such as: electrical systems in homes or even Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) distribution systems.

Mud removers warned over price-gouging in flood-hit provinces

Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has instructed officials at Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT) to take legal action against backhoe operators in flood-hit provinces for increasing mud-removal fees.

Indian move puts more pressure on Thai rice prices

India is preparing to resume exports of non-basmati white rice, as inventories in the world’s biggest exporter of the grain surge and farmers prepare to harvest a new crop. New Delhi set a floor price for non-basmati exports at $490 per ton, a government order said.

Scientists Unveil Countdown To Save Oceans From Plastic Pollution

A report published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin by researchers from Japan’s Kyushu University has, for the first time, established a clear numerical target for addressing global marine plastic pollution. Through their mapping of plastic waste movement and its impacts on the oceans, the team determined that a minimum 32% reduction in plastic littering is required by 2035 to avert further harm to marine environments.

Marine plastic pollution has been a growing issue for the world, and unless considerable interventions are placed the situation will only get worse. For several years, Prof. Atsuhiko Isobe from Kyushu University’s Research Institute for Applied Mechanics has been working to monitor and track plastic pollution in the ocean. FED (Foundation for Education and Development) in Thailand announced that the Thai government has allowed undocumented workers from four countries, including Myanmar, to make new registrations and accompanying children under the age of 18 to stay legally in Thailand.

Police guarding banks to stop loan sharks from grabbing 10,000-baht handout

All police stations nationwide are being alerted to guard banks where “fragile” groups of people are withdrawing 10,000 baht handouts, after finding out that loan sharks were waiting there to grab the money. A Maha Sarakham police team tightened security at the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) and other bank branches in this central northeastern region.

Police Col. Kraithong Chaisingh, head of Maha Sarakham city police station, said he sent a team of policemen to maintain law and order at this BAAC branch, which was crowded with farmers, and other bank branches and locations where vulnerable groups of people and the disabled are streaming in to check whether the 10,000 baht giveaway had been deposited before queuing up to withdraw money either via ATM if they have a card or wait to do so from a teller. Thailand is set to implement a carbon tax this year, Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul announced at the Road to Net Zero 2024: The Extraordinary Green event. Thailand sees 1.9 million new electric vehicle registrations, a 13% decline

As many as 1,876,356 electric vehicles (EVs) were registered in Thailand in the first eight months of 2024, a nearly 13% drop compared to the same period last year. The Department of Land Transport (DLT) said on Friday that registrations had declined by 280,091 vehicles from the 2,156,447 in the same period last year.

The department said that despite the lower number of registered EVs in 2024, the trend of new EV registrations was still growing, especially after January. Continued …

Overflowing Ping River continues to affect downtown Chiang Mai

The flooding triggered by the overflowing of the Ping River in Chiang Mai’s Mueang district is even worse than in 2011, according to a report. Korat faces water shortage with all its reservoirs only half full

While several provinces in the north are suffering serious flooding, especially Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima in the northeast is facing a water shortage with all of its 27 reservoirs now less than half full.

For an example, Lamtakong reservoir, which is the main source of water for Mueang, Sung Noen, Si Khio, Kham Thalae So and Chalerm Phra Kiat, now contains 92.26 million cubic meters of water, 30.6% of its capacity. Of that, only 25.2% of the water is usable. Continued … 

Roadside bomb injures eight soldiers in Narathiwat

Eight soldiers sustained injuries in a roadside explosion in Rangae district, Narathiwat, believed to be orchestrated by insurgents. The incident took place when an improvised bomb, tied to a power pole along a local road in Ban Hulu Pare, tambon Tanyongmat, was detonated as a military pickup truck carrying the soldiers drove past.

Mortgage growth forecast to plunge

Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research) expects 1.2% growth in mortgages within the commercial banking sector this year, the lowest level of expansion in 23 years. The low rate is attributed to the diminished purchasing power of home buyers.

Production index projected to decline 1% in 2024

Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) is likely to contract by 1% this year, given the declines recorded during the first eight months of the year, caused by a raft of economic problems and the impact of severe floods, says the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

Commerce Ministry to explore why pork prices are so high

The Commerce Ministry is inspecting pork prices nationwide in a bid to reduce expenses for Thai consumers and boost the competitiveness of producers.

Ministry spokesperson Wittayakorn Maneenetr said on Tuesday that the decision was taken after Thailand’s pork price was found to be higher than in other countries. The ministry’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT) has been tasked to collaborate with relevant agencies on seeking ways to ensure fairness among producers and consumers, he said. Continued …

North flood damage bill put at Bt3 billion

The government has estimated the total damage from the floods in the north to be about 3 billion baht. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said yesterday that the inundation in the north caused significant damage due to flash flooding.

The Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council initially estimated that the flood in the north had caused damage of about 3 billion baht, he said. Julapun said the damage had not spread widely enough to affect this year’s economic growth significantly. Continued …

Imminent-flood alert for Chiang Mai city

People living along the riverside in Chiang Mai are being strongly advised to move their belongings, including vehicles, to high ground as the Ping River was rising rapidly and expected to flood into the city on Tuesday night.

Pit Bull Attacks & Kills 67-Year-Old Woman Cycling in Pathum Thani

A 67-year-old woman in Pathum Thani was fatally attacked by a Pit Bull while cycling near her home in Chiang Rak Noi, Sam Khok District. The woman was found with severe bite wounds over most of her body. Despite efforts by emergency responders to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Ministry of Public Health says the universal healthcare program will not experience any financial problems, according to minister Somsak Thepsutin.

3 million to get handout funds today

The first 3 million needy and disabled people — out of a total of 14.5 million — will receive their 10,000-baht handout under the government’s digital wallet program today, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.

Due to limitations of the PromptPay payment system, only 3 million eligible recipients can be served initially. Funds were to be transferred to recipients’ bank accounts at midnight. Continued …

10,000-Baht Grant for Over 30 Million People Unlikely This Year

It is unlikely that over 30 million Thai citizens will receive a 10,000-baht grant under the second phase of the Pheu Thai-led populist handout scheme this year, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated yesterday.

Out of approximately 45 million Thais, around 14.5 million will start receiving the funds through their state welfare cards today, with the remaining 30 million expected to wait until next year, according to Julapun. Thailand’s vehicle production, sales plummet over 20% in August

The manufacturing and sales of vehicles in Thailand fell by more than 20% in August compared to the same period last year, stats from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) show.

Surapong Phaisitpattanapong, adviser and spokesman of FTI’s automobile club, said 119,680 vehicles were produced in August, marking a year-on-year drop of 20.56% in August and 4.12% decline from the previous month. Continued …

Cabinet allots Bt7.12 billion for EV subsidies

The cabinet has approved the allocation of 7.12 billion baht from the central reserve budget for emergency and essential purposes to fund the EV subsidy program.
