Private sector fears worse flooding in September and October

The Thai private sector is expressing concern that the flooding seen in August, which has already caused damage estimated at about 8 billion baht, may get worse this month and into October, due to tropical storms which could hit Thailand, said Payong Srivanich, president of the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking.

In a recent report, internet security firm Kaspersky observed a huge increase in malicious incidents caused by servers hosted in Thailand. In the second quarter of 2024 (April-June), Kaspersky detected 196,078 incidents, which is 203.5% higher than the same period last year, when Kaspersky logged 64,609 incidents.

Thailand’s annual headline inflation rate slowed in August, as food prices rose and energy prices fell, the Commerce Ministry said today, and remained below the Bank of Thailand’s (BoT) target range of 1% to 3%.

Thailand to move ahead with casinos plan, official says

The government will move ahead with plans for a mega entertainment complex that would house casinos in Thailand, Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat said today. A public hearing has concluded and 80% of those who attended agreed with the plan, Julapun said.

Most forms of gambling are currently illegal in the kingdom, though underground betting is rampant. The casinos are expected to attract primarily Thai gamblers, accounting for up to 90% of customers. Continued … 

Minister admits digital wallet plan needs adjustment

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat has conceded that the government’s 10,000-baht handout program needs some adjustment, including giving cash instead of digital money to some recipients.

The world is burning an alarming amount of plastic

Mastercard is expanding its efforts to eliminate the use of credit card numbers when customers make purchases online in a bid to fight fraud. A decade after it first unveiled a technology that replaces consumers’ card numbers with so-called tokens, the company is now processing 1 billion such transactions every week. It took the payments giant three years to process the first billion of such transactions.

Samsung sued for ‘defective’ Galaxy phones

The Thailand Consumers Council (TCC) and 119 consumers have filed a class action lawsuit against Thai Samsung Electronics Co. after the company refused to pay compensation for defective devices.

Sophon Nurat, a division head of the TCC, said users had complained about mysterious vertical green or pink lines on phone screens in various Samsung Galaxy models. Improved economic data in July

Thai small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) remain trapped in a cycle of rising costs, declining revenues and weakening consumer purchasing power. Access to formal credit also has decreased because of stricter regulations from financial institutions, leading to a greater reliance on informal loans.

After PM-elect Paetongtarn Shinawatra unveiled her list of Cabinet members on Friday, analysts zoomed in on the post of energy minister to find out who will be in charge of energy-related policies, particularly the capping of diesel retail price to help reduce people’s financial burden.

The portfolio would still be held by incumbent Pirapan Salirathavibhaga from the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party. Flooding in north may cost Thai economy up to 6 billion baht

Heavy flooding in several provinces in the north of Thailand is expected to cost the country up to 6 billion baht in damages, the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) said, as it called on the government to employ better preventive measures.

Thailand’s Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) in July increased by 1.7% year-on-year to 96.7 points, driven by various factors, including the 2024 Olympics and growing exports, says the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).

Floods in the north have little impact on foreign tourist plans, says TAT

The ongoing flood situation in several provinces in the northern region has had little to no impact on the plans of foreign tourists, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) said. Four tourist provinces in the north – Chiang Rai, Phayao, Phrae and Nan – have reported flooding in several areas during Aug. 22-28, the TAT said.

A TAT survey revealed that only a small number of tourists have canceled their trips to Chiang Rai due to the flood, TAT Gov. Landslide Buries Workers Inside High-Speed Rail Tunnel Construction

Yesterday, a landslide buried three vehicles and trapped workers inside a tunnel being constructed for the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project in Chanut subdistrict, Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima. The incident occurred while workers were excavating the tunnel, located between 600 meters and 2 Km deep into the tunnel.

Wthe workers have been found alive and rescue teams are working tirelessly to retrieve them from 6 metres beneath the debris. According to witnesses, workers were operating backhoes and loaders when the mountainside suddenly gave way, causing a massive landslide that engulfed three vehicles, including a supervisor’s car. Investment continues to contract

Investment, a key driver of Thailand’s economy, contracted in Q2 for the third consecutive quarter, decreasing by 6.2%. The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) reported a 6.8% decline in private investment, mainly due to an 8.1% drop in machinery and equipment investment, a 22.5% decrease in vehicle investment, and a slowdown in capital goods imports.

Two Russians among 10 killed in Phuket landslide

Ten people were killed when their houses were buried by a landslide in Phuket province on Friday. The landslide from the Nakkerd Mountain killed two Russians, six Myanmars and one Thai citizen. As for the 10th deceased, there is no information regarding nationality yet.

Phuket Deputy Gov. Sattha Thongkham and the incident commander for the Nakkerd Mountain landslide disaster in Karon subdistrict, as well as related agencies, have set up a command center near the scene, behind Kata Temple. Continued …

Army lawyer joins Hua Hin pub death probe

The Royal Thai Army has appointed a military lawyer to monitor a police investigation into the fatal shooting of one of its intelligence officers in an unlicensed Hua Hin bar that was open after the legal closing time. The army sargeant reportedly was shot in the back of the head.

Jakkrit Worakul, 34, is accused of shooting SM1 Rojchanaphon Rojchanapanich to death inside a pub on Soi 80, a nightlife area just off Phetkasem Road in Hua Hin. The incident also injured three others. Continued …

Thailand Open tennis returns to Hua Hin in September

The Thailand Open tennis tournament will be held next month at Arena Hua Hin, said Suwat Liptapanlop, honorary president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand (LTAT).

Nine confirmed dead in Chachoengsao plane crash

A small plane carrying nine people, including passengers and crew, crashed just 10 minutes after takeoff in Chachoengsao province yesterday. All on board are dead. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon, when officials began the grim task of recovering the wreckage in Moo 6, Ban Khao Din, Bang Pakong district.

Initially, the bodies of the passengers were nowhere to be found, sparking concern. However, it was soon discovered that the aircraft had plunged nose-first into the earth, embedding itself more than 10 meters deep in the muddy ground. Continued …

Deadly new mpox strain hits Thailand

Thailand confirmed its first case of a potentially deadlier strain of mpox, marking Asia’s first encounter with the virus variant known as Clade 1b. This development follows hot on the heels of the first reported case outside Africa, in Sweden, just a week ago.

Since last year, mpox has claimed at least 450 lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo, spreading across previously unaffected regions, including Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda. MRTA plans rail systems in 4 provinces

Bangkok to Beijing train: Mekong River railway bridge opens

Travelers are one step closer to a train journey from Bangkok to Beijing as a new railway bridge over the Mekong River has opened, linking Thailand and Laos by rail for the first time. This milestone, completed last month, leaves just a few dozen miles of a trackless gap before the route can finally reach China.

With the launch of this new service, passengers can now enjoy a 12-hour train journey from Bangkok’s Krung Thep Aphiwat Station to Khamsavath Station in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. However, Khamsavath, located about 9.7 kilometers outside Vientiane, is currently the final stop on this route. The 10,000-baht handout under the digital wallet scheme would kick-off in September, with priority being given to vulnerable sections of society, former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra revealed on Thursday. Duck egg prices up again to 5.10 baht an egg

The Egg Duck Assn. yesterday informed its members about the new farm gate prices for duck eggs. The price per egg has been increased by 10 satang, bringing the total to 5.10 baht per egg. This price adjustment is effective immediately, and any further changes will be communicated by the association.

New Suvarnabhumi runway to open at year-end

The third runway at Suvarnabhumi Airport will be ready for operation at the end of the year, according to Airports of Thailand (AoT), lifting aircraft handling capacity to 94 planes per hour from 68 now.

Changan to open Thai EV factory next March

Changan Automobile’s first electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia is set to open in Thailand in the first quarter of next year, with a total investment budget exceeding 10 billion baht.

“We expect to start producing battery EVs in March 2025,” said Shen Xinghua, managing director of Changan Auto Southeast Asia, a subsidiary of the Chongqing-based company. Another snake in a toilet

A Samut Prakan man making his morning visit to the toilet was startled on Wednesday by a sudden, sharp pain in his testicles after he sat down. He had been bitten by a python hiding in the toilet bowl, after which the reptile remained firmly attached to his scrotum before he was able to shake it off.

Strong baht to affect Q4 exports

The Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) is concerned that the rapid strengthening of the baht, currently at more than 34 baht to the U.S. dollar, could hinder the growth of the export sector in the fourth quarter of the year.

The accused in a fatal shooting of a sergeant in a local pub has been given bail by a Hua Hin court. The head of the Hua Hin Police Station’s Police Affairs Monitoring Committee confirmed that the suspect has been suspended to ensure a fair investigation and comfort the victim’s family.

Painter Falls to His Death from 49th Floor of Bangkok High-Rise

Yesterday, police from Phra Khanong Police Station received a report of a fatal fall at a building in Soi Sukhumvit 64/2, Phra Khanong District, Bangkok. The victim, a 30-year-old painter from Laos, had been working on the exterior of a 49-story building under renovation.

The Thai Red Cross Society has initiated mpox (formerly monkeypox) vaccinations for the public, priced at 8,500 baht per dose, primarily targeting men who have sex with men and individuals with multiple sexual partners.

The Thai Red Cross has imported the vaccine, which reportedly reduces the severity of the disease by 68 to 80%. No problems with cash distribution via digital wallet scheme

The Budget Bureau would have no objection if the government were to change the disbursement of the 10,000-baht financial benefit under the “digital wallet” scheme from “digital money” to cash, as long as the objective of the scheme is to stimulate the economy and the disbursement begins in September, Chalermphol Pensoot, the bureau’s director, said today.

Following the waste that’s choking the Chao Phraya

The Chao Phraya River is born from mountain streams in northern Thailand, flowing hundreds of kilometers south to the sea. By the time the river travels through Bangkok and empties into the Gulf of Thailand, it is carrying huge quantities of plastic waste – an estimated 4,000 tons every year. The plastic clogs the river along its course, drastically impacting communities and the waterway’s ecology.

The Chao Phraya starts at the confluence of the Ping and Nan rivers, which meet in Nakhon Sawan province in the heart of Thailand. Although the river’s waters have already traveled half of the country’s length by this point, it is still relatively clean, flanked by villages and farms. Continued …

NESDC releases report on Thailand’s economic performance

A week on Thailand’s Koh Samui and Koh Phangan islands provided a great escape from a cold and sometimes wet winter without having to stress about the lawn getting out of control, as well as a complete break from New Zealand’s eternal debates in the media about everything that’s wrong in this country.

A disagreement Sunday morning at an unlicensed Soi 80 Hua Hin pub led to the fatal shooting of Sgt. Major Rojchanaphon Rojchanaphanit, an intelligence officer at Thanarat Camp. The commotion at Tiny Club saw police commissioner Jakkrit Worawongphanitkul allegedly pulling a 9 mm. pistol, fatally shooting Punch and injuring two other patrons.

At approximately 4 am , Hua Hin Police Station received a report about a dispute turning violent in the Tiny Club on Soi Hua Hin 80. The country’s aging society is helping the elderly care industry to thrive, says the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO). Director-general Poonpong Naiyanapakorn said Thailand is now an aging society, as the number of elderly continues to rise while the birth rate declines.

Uncertainty looms over Thai tourism policies after PM reshuffle

Thailand’s tourism policies face uncertainty following the forced resignation of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on Aug. 14. Pattaya welcomed more than 12 million tourists in the first six months of this year, a million more than in 2023, according to the local Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) office.
