Mechanic Crushed to Death by Truck in Cha Am

An incident claimed the life of a 28-year-old truck mechanic yesterday while he was repairing the undercarriage of a 10-wheeler truck. The incident occurred at a truck repair shop along the Cha Am-Pranburi bypass, heading toward Bangkok.

According to police reports, the mechanic had finished replacing parts under the truck and was preparing to reattach the rear wheels. As he was adjusting the hydraulic jack to lift the truck higher, it tilted unexpectedly, causing the heavy vehicle to crash down on him, fatally crushing his head. Continued …

Suspected Drunk Drivers to Face New Testing Methods

Thailand has introduced new regulations allowing police to use urine or blood tests to determine the alcohol levels of drivers suspected of being drunk if they refuse to take a breathalyzer test. This announcement, published in the Royal Gazette, updates previous regulations from 1994 and 2017, which relied mainly on breathalyzer tests.

Thai PM: Mud must be cleared from Chiang Rai promptly

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has ordered officials to remove thick layers of mud from flooded Chiang Rai as soon as possible, while flood-related garbage and debris is estimated to be about 68,000 tons in this northernmost Thai province.

Attapon Charoenchansa, director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, said four sanctuary officials were captured in their living quarters while the black-clad and heavily armed attackers, with faces covered, bombed and torched the sanctuary office complex. Chinese nationals bought 2,872 condo units in Thailand from January to June, accounting for 39.5% of all condominium ownerships transferred to foreigners in the first six months of 2024, the Government Housing Bank’s Real Estate Information Center (REIC) reported.

In second place are buyers from Myanmar at 638 units (8.8%), followed by Russia, 567 units (7.8%), Taiwan, 326 units (4.5%), and the United States, 292 units (4%). Continued …

A Life Changing Move to Rural Thailand

Charissa Enget needed to find an engineering course she could afford. She found one in rural Thailand, where she got a scholarship and living costs were low. It took her six months to learn the language so she could communicate with fellow students, make friends, and travel round the country at weekends.

“I think living abroad is a lot different from traveling abroad, just because you really get to know the people and experience the culture, and it changes your way of thinking a lot more. Thailand changed the way I interact with people in a lot of ways, and I feel bonded to Thailand for the rest of my life. It really changed the way I want to live my life, and I’ll never stop loving Thailand or traveling back there as much as I can.”

Tropical storm Soulik to hit Thailand with heavy rain for 5 days

Tropical storm Soulik over central Vietnam is forecast to bring isolated heavy to very heavy rain to several parts of Thailand for the next five days, the Thai Meteorological Department said on Thursday.

The department said that the storm developed from a tropical depression and was centered about 90 kilometers southeast of the Quang Tri coast with sustained winds of about 65 kilometers per hour. Continued …

Flooding persists in six provinces

Floods remain in six provinces in the north, the northeast, the Central Plains and the south, affecting more than 33,000 families.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation reported on Thursday that flooding continued in Chiang Rai and Phitsanulok provinces in the north; Nong Khai and Bueng Kan in the northeast; Ayutthaya in the Central Plains; and Satun in the south. Bangkok Restricts Street Vending to Low-Income Thais

Condo group calls for looser real estate lending rules

The government is advised to ease lending restrictions and reduce interest rates as newly completed condo units worth more than 86 billion baht are awaiting transfer in the fourth quarter, which could lift both the property sector and the entire economy, says the Thai Condominium Assn.

Prasert Taedullayasatit, president of the association, said the transfer value in the fourth quarter alone could be equivalent to the total value from the first three quarters combined. Continued …

A depression is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm today, land in Vietnam and cause heavy downpours across Thailand until Monday, according to the Meteorological Department.

Flood warnings issued for northeastern provinces

Authorities are closely monitoring water levels along the Mekong River, particularly in Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, and Ubon Ratchathani provinces, as rising waters threaten low-lying areas.

Consumer spending to finally recover this year

Thailand’s rice exports rose 21.97% in the first seven months of 2024 compared to a year earlier, driven by rising global demand, as rice-importing countries seek to secure stocks amid food security concerns, official data showed on Wednesday.

Navy rescues 130 tourists stranded on an island off Phuket

About 130 Thai and foreign tourists, mostly Chinese, were safely rescued yesterday after they became stranded on Racha Yai Island, off Phuket, due to rough seas and strong winds, making it impossible for the tourist speed boats to pick them up.

Alerted by a call for help, the Royal Thai Navy sent a coastal patrol vessel to the island to take the stranded tourists back to the shore of Phuket. A naval officer said that the rescue mission was hampered by rough seas, but all the tourists were safely rescued. Continued …

Thailand’s energy-related CO2 emissions down 2.5% in first half of 2024

Thailand’s carbon dioxide emissions from energy usage from January to June stood at 121.9 million tons, down 2.5% year on year (YoY), the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO) reported on Wednesday. The office said electricity generation emitted the most CO2 at 48.1 million tons, increasing 5.8% YoY.

In second place was the transport sector, which emitted 41.5 million tons of CO2, down 1.2% YoY. The industrial sector, meanwhile, emitted 25.6 million tons of CO2, decreasing 16.8% YoY. Continued …

Pattaya: Search For Culprit Who Muzzled 10 Dogs With Tape
Authorities are searching for an unknown individual who bound the mouths of 10 dogs with adhesive tape in Soi 12, Pattaya-Naklua Road, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi. Some of the dogs were also seen with plastic bottles hanging around their necks. Local residents speculate that the muzzling was due to the dogs’ loud barking and aggressive behavior toward tourists. Thai jewelry exports surge 6.65% to $5.1 billion in first 7 months

Thai exports of jewelry and gems in the first seven months of this year rose 6.65% from the same period last year to US$5.103 billion (172.78 billion baht), the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT) announced on Monday.

Law to tax income from overseas in the works

The Thai Revenue Department is drafting a law to tax the income of individuals residing in Thailand that originates from overseas. The draft follows the international principle of worldwide income under the residence rule, said Kulaya Tantitemit, the director-general of the department.

Loss of forest areas in Nan of concern

AOT aiming high with airport plans

Airports of Thailand (AOT) has outlined an expansion of its six international airports to manage 210 million passengers by 2032. Kerati Kijmanawat, AOT director, on Friday outlined the Ministry of Transport’s strategic plan for 2023-2027, which aims to make Thailand a regional aviation hub.

As part of that, he said that Suvarnabhumi International Airport aims to have 120 million passengers by 2030, while Don Mueang International Airport expects to reach 40 million in the same year. Chiang Mai International Airport will serve 20 million passengers by 2032, Phuket International Airport will handle 18 million passengers by 2028, and Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport and Krabi International Airport will each serve 6 million passengers by 2032. Singapore to build mega airport terminal

Singapore will start construction of a new mega terminal at its Changi Airport in the first half of next year, aiming to lift the aviation hub’s annual passenger handling capacity by another 50 million.

Soi 80 shooter’s name finally revealed, out on bond

Five senior police officers in Hua Hin have been transferred following a shooting incident at an unlicensed nightclub. The incident resulted in the death of a soldier and injuries to three others.

The shooting occurred in the early hours of Aug. 18 at the Tiny Bar on Soi 80, a popular nightlife area just 500 meters from the local police station. Typhoon Yagi to hit most of Thailand with heavy rain

The Office of National Water Resources (ONWR) issued a warning on Thursday, saying Typhoon Yagi will bring heavy rain to the north, northeast, east and south (Andaman coast) of Thailand this week. Surasee Kittimonthon, the ONWR secretary-general, said the typhoon is forecast to pass through Hainan in China and make landfall over upper Vietnam on Friday and Saturday.

Increased rainfall is expected to hit Thailand over the next seven days. Heavy flooding can be expected in flood-prone areas in the north, as well as Trat in the southeast and Chanthaburi in the east, he added. Continued …

Thailand’s Driver’s Licenses Now Show Organ Donor Status

Driver’s licenses in Thailand will now clearly display whether the holder is an organ donor, the Department of Land Transport (DLT) has announced. Effective from Aug. 7, the updated design aims to raise awareness and streamline the identification of organ donors.

The new license design features a more prominent Red Cross emblem with the words “organ donor” visibly placed at the top right, provided the holder is a registered donor. At least 23 provinces want minimum wages unchanged

Wage committees in at least 23 provinces have proposed to keep the minimum wages in their areas unchanged at 330-345 baht per day after months of consideration, a news source said Thursday.

Ministry to propose nine train projects

Nine railway projects, including the 357-kilometer second phase of the Thai-Chinese high-speed train system, will be proposed for cabinet approval next month, according to Deputy Transport Minister Surapong Piyachote.

All nine projects need a total of 661 billion baht in investments, he said. Of the nine, six cover double-track rail routes that require 298 billion baht, he added. Heavy rain forecast across Thailand

Heavy rain is forecast across nearly all of Thailand, with 42 provinces, including Bangkok and its surrounding areas, expected to face severe weather. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) warns of flash floods, overflowing waterways, and high sea waves over 3 meters.

Thunderstorms are expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, and Surat Thani provinces. The minimum temperature will be 23 to 25°C, and the maximum temperature will be 30 to 35°C. Severe PM 2.5 pollution is having a dire effect on the environment and way of life in northern Thailand, forcing many businesses to close and leading to increased health problems. The resultant shift in the area’s social structure is of such concern that Rajamangala University of Technology Lanna (RMUTL) has made it a priority to address and reduce the impact of this deadly pollution.

Swiss man in Phuket acquitted of assaulting doctor

Due to a lack of evidence, the Phuket Provincial Court acquitted a Swiss man who had been charged with assaulting a female Thai doctor when she had allegedly trespassed on his property.

The incident occurred on Feb. 24 at a pool villa housing project on Yamu Beach in Phuket. The Swiss occupant of the house, identified as David, was accused of kicking the back of Dr. Tharndao after finding her sitting on the steps leading up to his compound. The court found that there was insufficient evidence to support the assault charge and ordered his acquittal. – thaipbs.com

Train Runs Over Man in Phatthalung

In a horrifying incident, a 32-year-old man was killed after being struck by a train in Phatthalung province. The man’s wife was left in shock after discovering that her husband’s body was found decapitated near the tracks.

VAT rules changed for online sellers in Thailand

Chinese imports putting four major Thai industries at risk

With just two months to go until the U.S. presidential election, an analyst is warning that no matter who wins, the trade war between the U.S. and China is certain to continue. However, if Donald Trump comes out on top, the impact on Thailand will be more severe, says Phiphat Luangnaruemitchai, chief economist at KKP Research, Kiatnakin Phatra Securities (KKP).

“The likelihood of increased tariffs on China is quite high. This would make Thailand a transit route for trade, and as China’s economy weakens and domestic trade declines, cheap Chinese goods will be exported to many countries, including Thailand,” Phiphat said. Continued … 

Cabinet approves 5 measures to curb ultra-cheap imports

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved five measures made up of 63 operational plans to tackle the influx of ultra-cheap and often substandard products that have been flooding Thai markets, Suksit Srichomkwan, the prime ninister’s deputy secretary-general for political affairs, said.

He said the measures were proposed by the Commerce Ministry, which had discussed with more than 50 public and private organizations ways to prevent ultra-cheap products, especially from China, from affecting both consumers and local manufacturers. Continued …

A local discovered the body of a Russian man in a ditch near Karon Beach in Phuket yesterday afternoon. A fatal attack is suspected as the man had wounds all over his body.

Officers from Karon Police Station were called to investigate the death of the Russian man, later identified as 27-year-old Ilia Orlov. Forensic doctors from Vachira Phuket Hospital and officers from the Phuket Ruam Jai Rescue Foundation also participated in the investigation. Continued …

Thailand nets 1.3 million kilograms of invasive fish

Thailand has netted more than 1.3 million kilograms of highly destructive blackchin tilapia fish, the government said Tuesday, as it battles to stamp out the invasive species.

Starved dead whale choked on garbage

A pregnant whale found dead on a beach in Phuket on Monday had choked to death after ingesting large amounts of floating garbage. The dead whale was found on Bang Tao beach in tambon Choeng Thale of Thalang district on Monday morning.

The Transport Ministry is asking the Cabinet for 600 million baht from the central emergency budget, so it can boost the liquidity of contractors working on Highway No 35 or Rama II Road.

Rescuers just a meter from trapped tunnel victim

Rescuers digging through the rubble in the collapsed train tunnel were about one meter away from one of the three trapped workers, the provincial governor said on Wednesday morning. Chaiwat Chuenkosum said they were moving very carefully toward the three victims, whose vital signs were still being detected by scanners.

New Rule Lets Convicts Serve Sentences Outside Thai Prisons

Thailand’s Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong justified a new regulation that allows convicts to be held outside traditional prison facilities. This measure, introduced by the Department of Corrections, is intended to help ease prison overcrowding in Thailand, where the inmate population of about 220,000 greatly surpasses the system’s capacity of 150,000 to 160,000.

The regulation, introduced under Sections 33 and 34 of the 2017 Corrections Act, allows for alternative detention, including hospitals for sick inmates. Tawee stressed that this is a practical measure for rehabilitation and career training, rather than a convenience for prisoners. Continued …

Since the 2021 coup in Myanmar, the military junta has continued its campaign of repression against the country’s citizens. Among the many groups targeted for harassment are independent journalists covering resistance groups. Many fled to Thailand, often illegally. Some later managed to legalize their immigration status by claiming to be migrant workers. However, most journalists have been forced to keep their real occupations secret.

Over the course of the past three years, women and LGBTQ+ journalists have risked their lives in the field while dealing with sexual harassment and the burden of looking after family members while displaced. Digital wallet scheme may be delayed to next fiscal year

The 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme faces potential postponement until the next fiscal year starting Oct. 1 if not implemented by next month, according to the Budget Bureau. Thailand’s exports in July expanded by 15.2% year on year thanks to a drop in global inflation, which put more money in consumers’ pockets, the Commerce Ministry said on Tuesday.

Another snake in a toilet

A Samut Prakan man making his morning visit to the toilet was startled on Wednesday by a sudden, sharp pain in his testicles after he sat down. He had been bitten by a python hiding in the toilet bowl, after which the reptile remained firmly attached to his scrotum before he was able to shake it off.

15 million ‘fragile’ people to get cash in lieu of digital wallet

An estimated 15 million Thai nationals will likely be granted 10,000 baht in cash each in lieu of a digital wallet with the same amount under a new Pheu Thai-led government, a source said yesterday.

Bank of Thailand Maintains Key Interest Rate at 2.50%

The Bank of Thailand’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has decided to maintain the key interest rate at 2.50% per annum. The decision came after a 6-1 vote during its meeting on Wednesday. Strong baht to affect Q4 exports

The Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC) is concerned that the rapid strengthening of the baht, currently at more than 34 baht to the U.S. dollar, could hinder the growth of the export sector in the fourth quarter of the year.

Chinese Investors Build Factories in ‘Chonburi-Rayong’, Land Prices Rise

Meesak Chunharakchoti, former president of the Thai Real Estate Assn., revealed that Chinese investors are increasingly buying land outside industrial estates in the Rayong region, such as in Nikhom Phatthana, Bo Win and Pluak Daeng districts, to set up factories to support investment in electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing in Thailand. Land prices in the industrial estates are relatively high, with some negotiations leading to discounts of up to 50%.

Temu dents Thailand Post’s logistics for e-commerce

The entry of Chinese e-commerce behemoth Temu is affecting Thailand Post’s logistics service for other e-commerce platforms as its volume declined by 20%-50% per day from July, said the company. Thailand Post’s logistics activities for TikTok fell by 50% from July to this month, said President Dhanant Subhadrabandhu.

Thai Hotels Report 170-Million-Baht Loss after German Tour Company’s Downfall

The collapse of the Germany-based travel agency FTI Group has resulted in a total loss of around 173 million baht for Thai hotels, a significant rise from the initially projected 111 million baht in June.

Hoteliers oppose Bt280-million package for online travel agents

Thai hoteliers are opposed to the cabinet’s approval of 280 million baht to support tourism packages provided by online travel agents (OTAs), fearing most of the income would flow out to foreign platforms, while local operators cannot reap benefits.
