Champions Cup 7s event this Saturday

This Saturday, the first Champions Cup 7s Thailand will be held at True Arena, beginning at 9:30am. Organized by Viking Club Hua Hin, the event expects as many as 200 players from around Thailand.

Thailand’s first boxing world champion, Hua Hin native Pone Kingpetch, honored

The World Boxing Council’s Asian branch (WBC Asia) has formally recognized the legacy of Thailand’s first world boxing champion, Pone Kingpetch.

In a recent meeting at the Asian Boxing Council office an honorary certificate was received from the International Boxing Hall of Fame (IBHOF). Pone Kingpetch was inducted into the Hall of Fame in June. Continued …

Another media bites the dust

The Royal Coast Review, started by a former editor of Hua Hin Today several years ago, has gone on what its founder calls a “sabbatical.”

According to the publication, “The personal circumstances of the Royal Coast Review founder and managing editor has lead to a decision to take an extended sabbatical away from Thailand and the suspension of the publication of the Royal Coast Review website.”

RCR was started as competition for Hua Hin Today, but recently changed its focus to only report on the local nightlife scene.

Media history suggests that a publication taking a leave such as this rarely makes a comeback.

Retail LPG to remain at same price

The retail price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is expected to be maintained at 25.87 baht per kilogram, or 432 baht per standard 15-kg cylinder, for another month, according to the Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO).

Wisak Watanasap, director of the OFFO, said the fund’s board met on Tuesday and passed a resolution to cap the LPG retail price until Sept. 30, extending it from the expiration date of Aug. 31. Continued … 

Elite Card price to be increased by 50%

Thailand Elite Card is preparing to raise its minimum membership price by 50% to 900,000 baht, from 600,000 baht, as the company attempts to ramp up annual revenue to 8 billion baht, according to Thailand Privilege Card Co. (TPC), the operator of the card.

The four new types of card will also remove the word “Elite” from their title, which has been used since the scheme’s establishment under the Thaksin Shinawatra government in 2003. Continued …

Cuts to diesel, electricity prices to be proposed

New Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said he expects his Cabinet to announce cuts to the price of diesel and electricity right after its first meeting.

Srettha was speaking to reporters on Wednesday morning after meeting with outgoing Energy Minister Supattanapong Punmeechaow and ML Chayotid Kridakon, chief of the United Thai Nation Party (UTNP)’s economic team. The meeting was held at the Pheu Thai head office at 11am. Continued …

Economic peril poses a greater threat to Srettha’s government than politics

Even though there are plenty of political challenges facing the Pheu Thai party, not the least being in a weak coalition, the economic challenges are far greater and could spell potential doom for the government if not handled correctly.

Thailand’s per capita income falls

Per capita income for this year has taken a hit after the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) revised the gross domestic product (GDP) projection from the initial estimate of 2.7%-3.7% to 2.5%-3%.

This decline is attributed to the second-quarter economic figures for 2023, which fell short of expectations due to a mere 1.8% expansion compared to the 2.6% achieved in the first quarter. The decrease in exports over the course of three consecutive quarters since the fourth quarter of 2022, with a negative growth of 5.7%, is the primary cause. Continued …

Factory output falls 4.43%

Thailand’s manufacturing production index (MPI) in July dropped 4.43% from a year earlier, the Industry Ministry said on Thursday, as exports declined amid sluggish global demand.

New EV policy would maintain and increase level of sales

Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI) is planning to propose to the new government that it implements measures to promote the purchase and manufacturing of electric vehicles (EVs) in Thailand under the EV 3.5 policy until 2025.

BOI Secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said on Wednesday that the EV 3.5 policy would help maintain the momentum of EVs in the automotive market, which has been growing thanks to the previous EV 3.0 policy. Continued …

The Foreign Ministry is set to overhaul the visa system to boost tourism revenue from Thailand’s main markets, especially China and India.

From tomorrow, beer in glass containers will be banned from Koh Tao as part of attempts to solve the garbage problem on the island.

What Thailand’s expats can expect from the new government

In order to achieve post-election constitutional power, Thailand’s Pheu Thai party finds itself abed with its former enemies allied to the military junta, which seized power in 2014. It may seem a wobbly coalition, but it’s likely to last several years.

Pheu Thai fears that its erstwhile popularity will dip, or perhaps ditch, in a fresh general election. The military-backed parties may face wipe-out as younger Thais, in particular, clearly prefer the radical reformist policies of the Move Forward party now consigned to sit on the opposition benches. New plan to deal with climate change to be launched this year

The Office of Agricultural Economics (OAE) has finished drafting a new operations plan to cope with climate change, the OAE chief said this week.

Chantanon Wannakhejorn, secretary-general of the OAE, which is under the Agriculture Ministry, said the OAE has worked with both state and private agencies in drafting the new plan, adding that the previous plan covering the period 2017-2022 had now expired, so the subcommittee responsible for enforcing policies on climate ambitions for land use and agriculture has been assigned to draw up a new one. International motorcycle gang and Indonesian drug syndicate nabbed

An international motorcycle gang and a major Indonesian drug gang, both of whom had fled to Thailand, have been apprehended in a sweeping operation by the Thai Immigration Bureau (IB). The series of arrests also included the capture of a notorious human trafficking network operating in the Sa Kaeo province.

The first significant arrest was that of Den, a German national wanted by his homeland’s authorities for a serious assault. The German Federation had requested his extradition to face punishment under the German Penal Code for causing grievous bodily harm to another person. Household debt surges, interest rates rise, vehicle sales fall

Rising household debt and increasing interest rates have impacted consumer purchasing power, leading to a decline in car sales in the country in July 2023, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) reported. The export market has shown slight growth.

While the overall Thai automotive industry saw growth in production and exports during the first half of the year, domestic car sales fell, totaling 58,419 units, down 8.77% from the same month in 2022. Joining the BRICs alliance would present economic opportunities for Thailand, as the alliance, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is enjoying strong negotiating power in trade agreements, according to former finance minister Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala.

Trade with China was extensive back in the days when the Chinese economy was dominant, Thirachai pointed out, adding that this fell off after Thailand aligned itself with the U.S. after World War II. Thailand threatens to shut down Facebook

The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (DES) is planning to shut down Facebook in Thailand for doing nothing to curb sponsored advertisements on the platform that have misled people into investing billions of baht in fake schemes.

The ministry plans to request a court order to block access to Facebook’s platform in the country. Recent incidents have involved Facebook receiving money from fraudulent pages that acted as sponsors to deceive and lure people into investing, causing substantial harm to many Thai citizens and damages exceeding 100 billion baht. Elephant found dead in Pranburi had been shot

A young male elephant has been found dead in Pranburi. The discovery of the elephant, believed to be between 7 and 10 years old, has stirred local and national concern.

Almost 2,000 businesses forced to close in July

Many Thai businesses are struggling to continue operations, with almost 1,867 businesses shutting up shop in July, an 18.7% increase compared to the same period last year, but in line with the trends in business closures over the past five years. It is, however, the highest number for the first seven months for the past 10 years.

News sources at the Commerce Ministry reported that some of these business closures might be due to adjustments made by businesses to align with changing market conditions and consumer behaviors. The closure trend has been observed across various sectors, with general construction witnessing 175 closures (9%), the real estate sector 103 closures (6%), and hospitality/restaurants 43 closures (2%). Thailand is accelerating the upgrading of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA) to address pending and new trade issues, including a proposal that agricultural export taxes from Thailand, such as on chilled chicken meat, rice, and fruits, be decreased or eliminated.

The fifth meeting of the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement Trade Negotiating Committee was held from July 31 to Aug. 3 in Jakarta, Indonesia. Illegal cannabis dispensaries shut down in Phuket

Thirteen cannabis dispensaries in Phuket have been shut down by authorities after they were found to be operating without a license, according to the province’s Public Health Office yesterday.

According to the office’s chief physician, Kusak Kukiattikoon, there are 1,701 registered cannabis-related businesses on the island, of which 1,451 are dispensaries. Heavy downpours are likely to soak 45 provinces across the country today, including Bangkok and the surrounding areas, the Meteorological Department announced.

Three new water-management measures adopted to cope with El Niño

Three new water-management measures were adopted at a meeting of the National Water Command Center yesterday in anticipation of a prolonged drought after the rainy season this year, due to the effects of El Niño.

Developer Sansiri sees net profit surge 162% in the first half

Net profit at Sansiri Plc. surged 162% year-on-year to 3.2 billion baht in the first half on strong sales of high-end houses and furnished condos, the company’s CFO, Wichan Viriyaphusit, said. Sansiri operates several projects in Hua Hin.

Hua Hin Airport expansion plan: 2-3 years before international flights

The Department of Airports (DoA) is planning to upgrade Hua Hin Airport into an international airport to boost tourism.

EGAT Rejects Cheaper Electricity Bills Amid Losses

The Electricity Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has announced that it cannot entertain any further requests for cheaper electricity bills in the upcoming four-month cycle.

The decision comes as EGAT faces financial strain due to its accumulated loss, which resulted from subsidizing power bills between September 2021 and May 2023. Convention bureau cuts MICE outlook

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has downgraded the revenue forecast for the MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions) segment to 96 billion baht, less than half the level recorded in 2019, and attributed to a subdued Chinese market.

Public urged to be discreet in water use amid low levels at reservoirs

The Royal Irrigation Department has urged the public to conserve water and is encouraging farmers to primarily rely on rainwater for agricultural purposes to store water for future use.

Praphit Chanma, director-general of the department, said that large and medium-sized reservoirs across the country held a total of 39.201 billion cubic meters of water, or 51% of storage capacity. Armed fighting continued in Myanmar’s eastern Karenni State on Friday, while more than 9,000 Myanmar villagers displaced by the recent clashes are taking shelter in the northern Thai province of Mae Hong Son across the border.

Jom is a man of few words. Our grasp of each other’s native language – my English, his Thai – is also minimal, meaning we don’t have a lot to say to each other. Thai baht falls on political uncertainties, Asian FX declines

The Thai baht hit a one-week low on Thursday on lingering political uncertainties after the populist Pheu Thai party took the lead in efforts to form a government, while other emerging Asian currencies fell against a firm U.S. dollar. The baht weakened 0.6% and equities in Bangkok shed 0.5%, a day after the Bank of Thailand raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points.

Southeast Asia’s second largest economy has been in political limbo since the May 14 election, and the latest twist came as the Pheu Thai party abandoned support for the reformist Move Forward party that had won most seats but twice failed to get parliament’s approval for its prime ministerial candidate. Heavy rain forecast for 43 provinces

The southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, most of the country, as well as the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure system over the upper coast of Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin, will continue to bring heavy to very heavy rain to 43 provinces,mainly in the north, northeast and eastern regions.

EGAT against further power bill cut

Debt-ridden Electricity Authority of Thailand (EGAT) cannot yield to any further requests for cheaper electricity bills in the next four-month cycle, as this would affect its future investment in the power infrastructure.

Its accumulated loss, which accrued after EGAT subsidized power bills from September 2021 to May 2023, is projected to decrease to 135 billion baht at the end of this month, according to the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC). Continued …

In a grisly discovery at a Koh Phangan rubbish dump yesterday, a body part was found in a blue plastic bag, with police suspecting it belonged to a foreign man who had been killed and his body cut up and disposed not more than 48 hours previously.

A pickup truck collided with a train in the early hours of this morning, killing eight Thai people and injuring three others near Klong Udon Chonlajon in Chachoengsao province near Bangkok.

Mueang Chachoengsao Police Station officers and a rescue team promptly rushed to the scene at approximately 3am today. They found a train, laden with containers, positioned on the railway tracks.
