Foreign ‘Mafia’ group holds gun to head of tourists in Pattaya

A shocking incident took place at the Voice of Navy 5 Viewpoint in Pattaya, as a Thai witness captured a distressing video of a foreign mafia member threatening a group of Asian men at gunpoint.

The video, lasting 1.39 minutes, shows a foreign mafia man dressed in all-black attire brandishing a gun and intimidating approximately 10 foreigners, believed to be Kuwaiti nationals. Robbery at Hua Hin gold shop: Thief flees with necklaces worth 300,000 THB

A thief dressed as a FoodPanda delivery rider struck a well-known gold shop in Hua Hin on Tuesday, brazenly escaping with a haul of gold necklaces worth nearly 300,000 baht.

The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 PM when Deputy Superintendent of Police at Hua Hin Police Station Pichaya Rongleua received a report of a robbery at the Yaowarat Gold Shop on Chomsin Road. Continued …

Boy, 9, missing off PKK beach

A search used rubber boats and drones to inspect an area of approximately 3 kilometers in search of a 9-year-old boy who went missing after swimming in the sea at Suan Son Beach yesterday. There were strong winds and waves at the time.

The missing boy and his family were visiting Samut Sakhon Province. The rescue operation involved hundreds of officials who combed an 800-meter stretch along the coastline. Specialized rescue divers searched an additional 1-kilometer distance into the sea.

Local radio station Surf FM re-brands to SURF Radio

The radio station started life 20 years ago by Pongsawatch Charoennithithat with a vision to provide English radio for expat residents and visitors to the area.

Major landslide warning for 45 provinces as Thailand braces for heavy rainfall

Continual rainfall appears to be holding Thailand under its reign. The Thai Meteorology Department (TMD) warned of potential landslides in 45 provinces, including Bangkok.

The precipitation accumulation could lead to sudden flooding and running forest water in the northern, eastern, and western southern provinces. Residents in these locations are advised to be cautious, especially around mountainous areas, or near river paths. Continued …

Mega changes ahead for Thailand’s Elite visa

The Thai Elite visa, which offers multiple-entry stays between five and 20 years, will totally replace its current packages on Oct. 1, 2023. Founded by then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2003, Thailand Privilege Card Co. is wholly owned by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. But a new senior management team at Elite has decided to introduce unprecedented changes.

All new applications for Elite must be made by Sept. 15 under the existing application rules: after that it will be too late. Current holders of the popular Elite Easy Access – a five-year visa available for a cash payment of 600,000 baht – have until Aug. 15 to transfer to a longer Elite visa, usually for 20 years: after that it will be too late. Tragic Fireworks Warehouse Explosion Leaves Community Severely Affected

The death toll from the massive explosion at a fireworks and firecracker warehouse in the southern Thai province of Narathiwat has risen to 12, with more than 120 people injured. About 100 residential buildings in the area were also damaged.

Employment on the rise as Thai economy continues to recover

The employment situation for Thais has consistently improved, reflecting the continued economic recovery following the pandemic, the National Statistical Office reported this week.

During thesecond quarter of 2023, 660,000 people found jobs, bringing the total number of employed individuals to 39.7 million. Thai inflation to remain relatively low in Q3

Global warming could break new records next year, severely affecting the agricultural sector and potentially causing losses of over 2.85 trillion baht by the year 2045, weather experts have warned.

Founder and former CEO of Thai renewable energy firm Wind Energy Holdings (WEH) has been awarded US$900 million (about 30 billion baht) in compensation by a British court over a share sale swindle.

On July 31, the British court ordered the current chairman of Wind Energy Holdings (WEH) and 13 other co-defendants to compensate the founder of the company for fraudulently conspiring to lure the plaintiff into selling his shares in WEH at an undervalued price, according to a BBC Thai report. Beach beating: 20 Thai transwomen assault foreigners in Pattaya

In the early hours of this morning, a gang of 20 Thai transwomen unleashed a physical assault on three foreigners along Beach Road in Pattaya, raising concerns due to their previous involvement in violent acts in the area.

When COVID broke out, I was an expat living in northern Thailand. In 2020, and most of 2021, the country had no access to COVID vaccines. The Thai government shut its borders to prevent the spread of disease. Most foreigners were locked out of Thailand. I was locked in.

Surin marks Asanha Bucha with elephant parade

Thirty-seven elephants carried 71 monks in a merit-making ceremony marking Asanha Puja Day in the northeastern province of Surin on Tuesday morning.

Chomsin Road (Soi 55) road work Aug 6-15

Chomsin Road, Soi 55, will be partially closed to traffic from Aug. 6-15, between 9am-6pm. One lane will be closed and there will be power disruptions, as well.

The contractor will be carrying out pavement removal work for a road surface expansion project.

Illegally stored explosives blow up in Narathiwat, killing 12, injuring 121

A warehouse near the main market of a village in Narathiwat’s Sungai Padi district blew up on Saturday evening, killing 12 people and injuring some 121 others.

As of press time on Sunday, 111 of the injured had been discharged from hospital. Among the deceased, seven have been claimed by families, two have been interred, two are yet to be identified and the authorities have yet to disclose information about the 12th body. Continued …

Thai Meteorological Department warns of soaking showers

The Thai Meteorological Department issued a warning today of increased and heavy rainfall due to the southwestern monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. As a result, 47 provinces are at risk of sudden flooding and forest runoff.

The best word I can find to describe Khun Ong, Chaiyapat Butrdee, is trailblazer. He is a man of passion and vision, is perfectly sure about the path he has decided to follow, and is doing everything in his power to smooth the path for those who make the very wise choice to travel alongside or in his footsteps.

But getting to where he is now has not been a straight or even smooth trajectory, yet Ong has displayed the tenacity and the determination required of him. MFP calm amid election rejig buzz

The Move Forward Party (MFP) has dismissed speculation it will be excluded from a new government led by the Pheu Thai Party, insisting that unity among the eight prospective coalition parties remains intact.

According to sources, the latest possible configuration of a new government has emerged, still comprising the original coalition allies but with the Bhumjaithai and Chartthaipattana parties also invited to join. Reviewing the five visa options for retirement in Thailand

Thailand regularly appears in the top 10 destinations chosen by foreigners wanting to retire abroad. Unlike other Southeast Asian countries, Thailand does not offer a retiree visa, as such, but a number of choices aimed specifically or partially at this market.

Non-immigrant “O” visa conversion

This is the most popular route at present. A foreigner aged at least 50 enters the country with a visa exempt or tourist visa (30 or 60 days) and applies at local immigration to convert it to a three months non-immigrant “O” and thence to an annual extension of stay based on retirement. Typically, the financial requirement is 800,000 baht in a Thai bank or proof of monthly transfers to Thailand of at least 65,000 baht. The detailed bureaucracy varies in immigration offices nationwide and several embassies now refuse to get involved in certifying the creditworthiness of their own nationals. Continued …

The 400-kilometer-long double-track railway linking Bangkok’s neighboring Nakhon Pathom province to Chumphon in the south will be ready for test runs in September.

Tipanan Sirichana, deputy government spokesperson, said on Sunday that the railway, the construction of which was split into three phases, will be partially ready for test runs of the entire route in September. Continued …

Over 9,000 Karenni people have fled to Mae Hong Song from war in Myanmar

The Mae Hong Son provincial administration is taking care of more than 9,000 Karenni people who have fled an intensifying bombing campaign targeting Karenni Army bases and villages in Myanmar’s Kayah State.

‘Health park” to open in Hin Lek Fai area

Hua Hin Health Park is set to open in the Hin Lek Fai area of Hua Hin. With completion expected in November, the site is located near the Hua Hin International School and Black Mountain Golf Course.

The park will offer a range of health, retail, and food and beverage options, including specialized facilities like the Spine Clinic and the Be Well Medical Center. The park will also include a pharmacy, deli, coffee shop, wine shop and other retail outlets.

Sam Roi Yat marsh boardwalk reopened

The boardwalk at Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, a one-kilometer-long wooden structure stretching over the Thung Sam Roi Yot freshwater marsh on the western side of the park, has been given a new lease of life. Heavy downpours forecast across 42 Thai provinces

The country has been warned of possible intense downpours today by the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), affecting 42 major provinces across Thailand, including Bangkok. Residents are being cautioned of sudden flash floods.

At 5am today, the TMD forecasted a 24-hour weather change with the intrusion of monsoons from the north and northeast. The Move Forward Party is on the verge of being given a sideways shift by its coalition partner, Pheu Thai, as the country grapples with a political crisis caused by opposition to the Move Forward Party from the unelected Senate and heightened tensions over the radical party’s insistence on pursuing its controversial policy to amend Article 112 of the Criminal Code on lèse-majesté.

Thailand’s adult female literacy placed 6th among ASEAN countries

A report on gender equality and development shows that, despite significant progress in education equality, the disparity still exists. The literacy rate of Thailand’s adult females in 2022 was 92.4%, which was lower than most other ASEAN countries, according to The Asian Development Bank (ADB).

The ADB states that the Philippines had a rate of 98.2%, Brunei 96.3%, Singapore 95.9%, Indonesia 94.0%, Vietnam 93.6% and Malaysia 93.5%. ASEAN countries with a lower literacy rate than Thailand are Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar. Continued …

Myanmar military ramps up defenses opposite Mae Hong Son

Some 3,000 soldiers from the Myanmar military army arrived in Doi Sam Muang and Japasa Camp in Kayah State opposite Mae Hong Son’s Muang district on Thursday to reinforce the army’s positions.

The army has been holding these areas to fend off attacks by the Karenni Army (KA) and the Karenni Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF), and has also prohibited some 400 local villagers from leaving the areas. New firms surge amid Thai recovery

New corporate registrations are expected to reach 83,000-90,000 this year, boosted by the increase in foreign tourists and the Thai economic recovery, outstripping an earlier projection of 75,000-78,000, according to the Commerce Ministry’s Business Development Department.

Parliament Prevents Leader of Party That Won Election From Being Renominated for Prime Minister

In a day that was bitterly disappointing for Move Forward Party (MFP) supporters and prime minister candidate Pita Limjaroenrat, the leader of the MFP, was suspended from his duties as a MP and denied the chance for a second vote to become prime minister.

Limjaroenrat, 43, and his party won the most seats in the House of Representatives in the last Thai election and formed a coalition with seven other parties, including Pheu Thai, who was a close second in number of MP seats. Parliament to meet again July 27 to select prime minister

Another joint sitting of the House and Senate, for the selection of Thailand’s new prime minister, has been scheduled for 9.30am on Thursday, July 27, House speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha said Wednesday night.

He said that the meeting will begin with the nomination by political parties of prime ministerial candidates, followed by a debate on the qualifications of the nominees, which must be completed by 5pm, after which there will be a roll call vote. Continued …

The Pheu Thai Party has emerged in pole position to form a new government after parliament on Wednesday rejected a bid to renominate Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat for a prime ministerial vote, citing a parliamentary meeting regulation.

Move Forward MPs File Bill To Rid Senators Of PM-Picking Power

Move Forward MPs yesterday filed a renewed bill to put an end to the constitutional power of the military-appointed senators to pick a prime minister.

The Move Forward legislation was lodged in pursuit of amendment to Section 272 of the military-designed constitution to the extent that the senators be no longer empowered to vote for prime minister alongside the elected MPs. Continued …

General Prawit may emerge next week to clinch prime minister’s job

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan, the leader of the Palang Pracharat Party, may emerge as a surprise new candidate for prime minister next Wednesday, with sources within the eight-party coalition increasingly concerned after Thursday’s polarized debate in parliament, that the avuncular party leader may gain the support of the 188 MPs in the House who voted against Pita and swing undecided senators to come in behind his bid, which could lead to him securing well over the 375 votes required under Section 272 to be legally confirmed as government leader.

Political experts see no path for Pita to become PM

Many Thai experts and political analysts say that the Move Forward-led coalition may have to consider fielding a prime minister candidate other than Pita Limjaroenrat. They spoke on Friday, a day after Pita failed to win in the first round of parliament’s vote for prime minister.

Bumrungrad International Hospital in Bangkok ranked among world’s best hospitals

Newsweek and Statista, a news magazine and a website for statistical information, recently published the World’s Best Hospitals list, ranking 250 of the top global hospitals. Bumrungrad International Hospital, in Bangkok, ranks 182nd overall, with a 93% score, while the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, is the top-ranked hospital.

Given the name Thomas at birth, this man is now called Tom by his family and friends in England and other parts of the world, but is pretty much universally known as Tommy Taylor by his Thai friends and his many contacts in wildlife protection and conservation.

Triple surge in dengue cases challenge Thai healthcare system

A surge in dengue patients has been recorded in the first half of this year, with numbers almost triple that of the same period last year, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC). Ceremony held to remember those who died during Tham Luang rescue

A religious ceremony was held this morning in front of Tham Luang cave, in the Tham Luang-Khun Nam Nang Non National Park in Chiang Mai, to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the dramatic search and rescue mission for 12 members of the “Wild Boar” school footballer team and their coach, trapped inside the flooded cave from June 23 to July 10, 2018.

The ceremony was also held to pay respects to two members of the Thai Navy SEAL team who died during the rescue, Saman Kunan and Beirut Pakbara, the late Chiang Rai Gov. Tourism is still driving growth of Thai economy, central bank says

Tourism remains the engine of growth for the Thai economy, and with the number of foreign visitors continuing to rise, economic growth will pick up, according to the Bank of Thailand monetary policy department Director Sakkapop Panyanukul.

The Hua Hin to Suvarnabhumi Airport bus service schedule has been updated for the low season timetable. The price of tickets has been reduced to 294 THB.

Also, the service between Hua Hin and Pattaya has been updated.

The new schedule is as follows:

  • Departure from Suvarnabhumi: 10am, 1:30pm, 5pm

‘3 strikes’ for Pita’s PM bid

If Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat fails in his bid to win the prime minister’s post during the first round of voting, he can expect one or two more chances before another deal must be struck, according to newly elected House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha. The crucial first vote is expected within 15 days, Wan said.

Asked to comment on what was likely to happen if that vote doesn’t go in Pita’s favor, Wan said: “We will have to consider how many votes he still lacks, and voting should be repeated one or two more times.” Continued …

Inflation unexpectedly up in June but at slower pace

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) increased 0.23% in June from a year earlier, slowing from a 0.53% year-on-year rise in the previous month, the Commerce Ministry said on Wednesday.

Headline inflation was the lowest in 22 months, due to lower food and energy prices and a high base last year. It is expected to rise slightly in the third quarter, the ministry said. Continued …

Off-duty police officer kills 2 in drunken accident in Ayutthaya

An Isuzu pickup truck collided with three motorbikes on Napeephat Canal Road in Ayutthaya’s Wang Noi district at around 4.30am. The incident, resulting in two fatalities and two serious injuries, quickly drew the investigative eye of a deputy inspector from Wang Noi Police Station, Wivut Jannak.

Windowing into the accident scene, three motorcycles were found scattered across the road haphazardly among a mayhem of damaged and twisted metal. Heavy rain alert: 39 Thai provinces braced for potential floods

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued an advisory for continuous rainfall over many parts of the country.
