Strong winds and waves disrupt Hua Hin, Cha Am beachfront tourism

Powerful cold winds have been blowing across the east coast of Thailand and high waves are seen in the Gulf of Thailand, likely caused by the northeast monsoon, according to the Thailand Meteorological Department.

Along the coastline spanning over 200 kilometers from Hua Hin Beach to Bangsaphan Noi district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, waves 2-4 meters high have been observed. Continued …

Tighter Tax Rules Not Applicable If Double Taxation Agreement Signed

Amid concern among foreigners who have retired in Thailand about the impact of more stringent tax rules on remittance of overseas income as announced on Sept. 15, an expert pointed out this could be avoided if their country has signed a double taxation agreement with Thailand.

A seismic upheaval of 6.4 magnitude rattled Myanmar and was perceptible in various regions of Thailand yesterday, prompting engineers and academics to urge the implementation of stringent regulations to ensure the resilience of structures against future earthquakes.

14 Thai hospitals report quake damage

Fourteen Thai hospitals — 13 in the north and one in the northeast — have been damaged by the 6.4-magnitude earthquake that occurred in neighboring Myanmar on Friday morning, with services at two hospitals partially suspended, Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew said.

According to reports sent to the ministry, affected were 11 hospitals in Chiang Rai and two in Chiang Mai in the north, and one hospital in Sakon Nakhon province in the northeast. Continued …

Where to enjoy Loi Krathong festivities in Hua Hin

At the end of the month, people in Hua Hin and across Thailand will gather at lakes, rivers, canals, and beaches to participate in Loi Krathong and pay respect to the goddess of water.

In Thai, the word loi means “float” and krathong means “container, boat or vessel”. Krathongs decorated with candles and flowers will be floated on the water, as a way to rid oneself of bad luck and negative feelings, and to bring good luck and positive feelings.

Thailand Open set for Arena Hua Hin in January

Hua Hin will host the Thailand Open 2024 next January at the Arena Hua Hin.

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) International Series Tournament returns for its latest edition, offering a prize pool of $300,000 USD.

The tournament, a WTA 250 event, will commence with qualifying rounds slated for Jan. 27-28, followed by the main draw competition running from Jan. 29 to Feb. 4.

Thailand on course for hottest and driest year: climate expert

A climate change expert has warned that Thailand is on course to experience its “hottest and driest year” on record in 2024.

Dr. Seri Suparatit, an expert on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), forecast an unusually warm cool season (November-February) for the country followed by extreme heat in April. Average temperatures in the hot season would be 1.5C higher than normal, he said. Continued …

Activists say dam plans threatens forest

Conservationists have opposed a plan to build seven dams in Nakhon Nayok and Prachin Buri, saying the project will devastate 16,000 rai of land in the Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai forest area.

Ornyupa Sangkaman, secretary-general of the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation, expressed grave concern that many trees in the forest would be lost if the dam projects proceed. Continued …

Over 20,000 Thai workers choose to stay in Israel amid escalating conflict

Despite the escalating conflict in Israel, over 20,000 Thai workers have opted to remain, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The ministry continues to commit itself to facilitating the return of those wishing to leave. Before the occurrence of the cross-border raids by Hamas forces on Oct. 7, approximately 30,000 Thai citizens were working in Israel.

However, the number of Thai workers seeking to return home has significantly dwindled in recent days, which led to the closure of the coordination center at the Royal Thai Embassy in Tel Aviv. The last few workers who registered for repatriation landed in Thailand the previous day. Continued …

Germany grants 16 billion baht to Thailand for climate change projects

Thailand is set to receive a significant contribution of 422 million euros (16 billion baht) from Germany, intended to fund various projects addressing climate change impacts. The announcement was made by Ernst Reichel, the German ambassador to Thailand, during a press briefing yesterday.

Reichel, who assumed his diplomatic role two months prior, underscored that climate change mitigation is a prime concern for Germany. He noted that both Germany and Thailand have experienced first-hand the repercussions of climate change, with dry summers, violent storms, and severe flooding becoming increasingly frequent. Baht hits two-month high

The baht traded at a two-month high on Monday and is expected to remain strong until year-end, as the market considers whether the Federal Reserve might cut interest rates sooner than previously forecast in 2024, say analysts.

Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research) said the baht traded in a range of 35.45-35.47 to the dollar on Monday morning, easing from a two-month high of 35.41 baht last Friday. Continued …

New minimum wages for Thailand will be announced in December, but the rates will be less than 400 baht per day, Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said Monday.

The government has announced a plan to use so-called soft power to help generate annual revenue of about 4 trillion baht over the next four years through the establishment of a Thailand Creative Content Agency.

Other provinces demand extended nightlife hours

With nightlife venues in Phuket, Chon Buri, Bangkok and Chiang Mai being granted extended opening hours, other provinces want to do the same. From Dec. 15, bars and clubs in four popular tourism provinces can remain open until 4am (previously 2am) for a trial period. (Alcohol sales, however, have not been extended to 4am.)

The move is one of several introduced by PM Srettha Thavisin, in a bid to boost Thailand’s economy and the tourism sector. It is not yet known how long the trial will last and if or when it will be extended nationwide. Continued …

Only Night Venues In Bangkok, 3 Key Tourist Provinces To Stay Open Until 4am

Entertainment venues to be legally allowed to open until 4am will only refer to those in Bangkok and three provinces widely known as major tourist spots and nowhere else in an initial stage, said Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul yesterday.

The planned extension in the opening hours for these entertainment venues in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi and Phuket would likely be effective as of Dec.15 at a height of the country’s tourist season, while those in all other provinces will not yet be initially provided such leniency, Anutin said. Pranburi’s abandoned temple complex

Wat Huay Plap Wararam, known locally as the “abandoned temple”, features a strikingly large reclining Buddha and a replication of Luang Pu Thuad, a revered monk, alongside the prominent reclining Buddha statue. Thai AirAsia launches fly-thru flight to boost lesser-visited provinces

Two videos of Thailand’s ‘floating train’

Railway adventures are gaining popularity in the kingdom, with tourists seeking off-the-beaten-track travel experiences away from the hordes visiting temples and beaches. Saturday was the State Railway of Thailand’s first Bangkok to Pasak Jolasid Dam service “Rot Fai Loi Nam” marking the end of the rainy season. Hundreds of bleary-eyed passengers boarded the train at Bangkok’s century-old Hua Lamphong Station before sunrise.

Lotus ponds, jungles, temples and rice paddies zipped by as tourists in third class hung out the window and took pictures while enjoying the natural air conditioning. Three and a half hours after chugging out of Bangkok, the refurbished Japanese train pulling more than a dozen carriages crossed the Pasak Jolasid reservoir over a series of viaducts and stopped for 20 minutes of selfie time. For most of the year, cattle graze underneath the bridge, but from October to January, the water is high on both sides, which gives the impression that the train is floating on water. Brakes Put On Sugar Price Hike

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai yesterday halted a four-baht increase in the ex-factory price of sugar nationwide for the 2023/24 production season, excluding VAT, as earlier announced by the Cane and Sugar Board.

Bars to open until 4am in tourist areas from New Year

Entertainment places will be allowed to stay open until 4am in tourist provinces from this New Year festival onward, to help stimulate the economy, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said on Monday.

US tourist stabbed to death in Phuket hotel

In Phuket, the body of a foreign male tourist was found stabbed to death inside a hotel room. The decomposing state of the body suggested he had been dead for 2-3 days. Notably, two passports were discovered, identifying him as a dual national of the United States and Costa Rica.

Petrol prices to drop by 2.50 baht as new year gift

Taxes made simple: the story of VAT

According to an announcement made in September covering additional amendments to reducing the value-added tax (VAT) rate as per Article 80 of the Revenue Code, Thailand’s VAT rate was reduced to 6.3% on the sale of goods, provision of services, or imports, effective Oct. 1, 2017, until Sept. 30, 2024.

Weak baht contributes to 350-billion-baht trade deficit

The private sector has expressed concern at the continued weakness of the baht, which has resulted in Thailand’s trade balance being in deficit for eight consecutive months to the tune of 350 billion baht.

According to the Thai National Shippers’ Council (TNSC)’s Chairman Chaichan Chareonsuk, even though Thai exports have benefited from the weakened baht, reducing the prices of Thai products in line with the currency, it has also increased the costs of importing goods and raw materials needed for production. Influenza cases rise five-fold in Thailand

A startling surge in influenza cases has been observed in Thailand this year, with a five-fold increase compared to last year’s monthly averages. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning to the public about illegal antiviral medications labeled as oseltamivir being smuggled into the country.

Rising baht forecast to climb higher against dollar

The baht opened at 36.54 baht per U.S. dollar on Wednesday, strengthening from 36.75 at the close of trading yesterday. The dollar weakened after the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield fell to 4.65% yesterday.

Thailand’s Culture Ministry is preparing to register Loy Krathong festival in 2024 in the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage to complement the government’s policy of promoting Thai culture and soft power at global level.

Loy Krathong is one of Thailand’s most popular festivals, celebrated on the full moon of the 12th lunar month. It involves releasing “krathong” — lotus-shaped rafts decorated with candles, incense and flowers — onto lakes and rivers to honor the Buddha and the water goddess. Video: Cobra caught by wildlife handlers

A cobra lurking near a resident’s yard was captured by wildlife handlers in Nakhon Ratchasima province. The terrified homeowner called the snake catchers for assistance on Oct. 7. Footage shows the volunteers grabbing the three-meter cobra using snake tongs as it tried to hide in a narrow alley beside the house. IMF lowers Thai GDP growth forecast for 2023 to 2.7% due to global situation

The Thai baht opened slightly stronger today at 36.90 baht per U.S. dollar after the U.S. dollar weakened amid concerns about the impact of the Israeli-Hamas conflict.

Krung Thai Bank currency analyst Poon Panichpibul said the baht opened this morning stronger than the previous day’s close of 37.11 baht per U.S. dollar, gradually strengthening overnight supported by the dollar’s depreciation due to the bond yield’s decrease. Royal Thai Police submitted documents and evidence to the Thailand Courts to issue a warrant for the arrest of a Burmese man for the suspected murder of a former Thai diplomat at a house in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. The suspect reportedly escaped arrest outside Bangkok but police believe he is still in Thailand.

Following the death of 63-year-old Wichit Chitwimarn, Deputy Commissioner of Metropolitan Police Division 1 Noppason Poonsawat told the media today that officers discovered Wichit’s mobile phone and tablet missing. Thailand’s low-earth-orbit satellite, Theos-2, was successfully launched on Monday from the Guiana Space Center, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) said.

Thai baht hits new low against US dollar amid gold price drop

The 2023 financial year has seen the Thai baht rank as one of the region’s poorest performing currencies, depreciating to a low of 37.14 to the U.S. dollar on Tuesday – a level not seen since November of the previous year.

The recent plummet in gold prices, with a decline of around 5%, or US$7.45 (274.65 baht), per ounce, has prompted increased demand for dollars for gold purchases, further weakening the Thai currency. Continued … 

Isolated heavy rain for most of Thailand

Isolated heavy rains are forecast in the north, the northeast, the central region, the east, and the south of Thailand today, the Thai Meteorological Department announced.

These conditions are being fed by the monsoon trough lying across the lower north, the upper central and the lower northeast converging with a low-pressure cell over the central region, as well as the southwest monsoon prevailing across the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand. – The Nation

Firearm permits for civilians halted

Inflation up only 0.3%

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.3% in September from a year earlier, slowing from a 0.88% year-on-year increase in the previous month, the Commerce Ministry said today.

Are economic danger signals flashing for both Thailand and the world?

On Tuesday, PM Srettha Thavisin pointed to the declining baht, saying that the Bank of Thailand was monitoring the situation and that it would help boost Thai exports and tourism. The baht has fallen 7% this year but is still higher than the rates set in October 2022 with Bangkok analysts suggesting that although it may fall to ฿37.55 to the dollar in the weeks ahead, but then recover with the high season for foreign tourism, to anywhere between ฿35 and ฿36 by the end of 2023.

However, could this year be different? In the last week alone, Thailand’s 10-year bond yields have risen 4.57% amid a similar surge in the United States, as markets have become wary of risk. This will make the government’s contentious expansionary stimulus plans for the economy more expensive in a darkening economic environment, with an implosion of the Chinese economy and market skepticism about Pheu Thai’s expansionary policies at a time when world economic danger signals are flashing. Hua Hin municipality outlines plans for future development

Hua Hin municipality commemorated its 86th anniversary with a merit-making ceremony on Monday. Mayor Nopporn Wutthikul led the ceremony, which was overseen by Phra Kru Wichitthamvibhat, the chief of Hua Hin District and the abbot of Wat Busayabunpot.

On Saturday, Hua Hin welcomed two new fitness centers – Elite Fight Club Hua Hin and CrossFit Hua Hin.

The Thai Revenue Department has explained more about the taxation of income overseas, which will affect both some foreigners and some Thai people.

The basic idea is, that when money is transferred into Thailand it should be taxed in Thailand if it is income. If the income has been received in another country and later within the same tax year is being transferred to the taxpayer’s account in Thailand, it must be taxed in Thailand. If Thailand has a double tax agreement with the country where the money comes from, the tax paid in that foreign country can be deducted in Thailand according to the rules in the double tax agreement. Two dead, five wounded in Siam Paragon shooting, suspect used modified BB gun

A Chinese tourist and a woman from Myanmar were killed at Siam Paragon shopping mall in Bangkok on Tuesday afternoon, by a teenager using a modified BB gun, according to Police Gen. Torsak Sukvimol, the national police chief. Some media reported a third death.

PM Puts Weapon Systems Procurement On Hold

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin yesterday suspended the procurement of any weapon systems during fiscal 2024, so that, he said, the government’s annual budget could be spent for optimum use.

13 Electric Poles Collapse During Installation, 12 Injuries, 2 Deaths

On Monday, Police Capt. Thongkham Phoyai, Saraburi Province, received a report that 13 14-meter-tall concrete poles with high voltage wires fell down during installation at the Ban Krua subdistrict, Ban Mo District. A rescue squad was urgently dispatched to aid the injured and send them to nearby hospitals.

A security camera caught a foreign couple stealing two motorcycle helmets from a post office welfare house in the northern province of Chiang Mai in a bid to avoid being fined at a police checkpoint.

Giant python crashes lunchtime in Yala

A giant python, almost 5 meters long and weighing 7 kilograms, caused a stir yesterday when it slithered into a noodle shop in Yala. The reptile was discovered by the shop owner, Suhayna Beeing, who immediately alerted residents of the Gunung Janoang community, sparking panic and attracting a crowd of onlookers.

Suhayna noticed the giant python hiding under a pile of goods in his shop. The shop owner’s call for help was answered by Kanob, a local farmer and president of the local charity foundation. Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, pointed out yesterday that the weakening baht, despite its potential negative impact on energy import costs, is actually proving to be a boon for the country’s exports and tourism. Tourism confidence in Thailand plummets amid economic jitters

The tourism confidence index in Thailand has taken a hit, with figures sliding from 91 in the same period of 2019 to 69 in the third quarter of this year, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT).

Thai golf veteran Thammanoon Sriroj has added another feather to his cap, emerging as the champion of the Toyota Senior Championship 2023 held at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course.

Baht depreciates further

Thailand’s baht slumped to its lowest in more than 10 months on Thursday, hit by persistent worries over the country’s fiscal outlook, while other Asian currencies steadied after recent losses against a rallying United States dollar.

UTCC cuts estimate of economic growth to 3%

Several economic factors are signaling a less-optimistic outlook for the Thai economy, leading to a revised growth forecast for 2023, Thanawat Polvichai, rector of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC), said this week.

Thanawat, who also serves as chief adviser to the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecasting, said that the UTCC has now revised Thailand’s economic growth rate for this year to 3% from the initial 3.6%. Labor minister vows to raise daily minimum wage by year-end

Labor Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced on Thursday that the raising of the minimum wage would be a New Year’s gift for the labor sector, but could not confirm whether the increase would bring it up to 400 baht per day.

Formal discussions with the tripartite committee, composed of employers, employees, and government representatives, would first be necessary, he said, adding that the decision would be based on inflation rates, minimum wages in each province, varying wages in different industries, and the country’s inflation rate. A retired senior police sergeant major, in the central province of Kampaeng Phet, raised a few titters after he completed an unusual erection on his land, three penis statues. He believes the phallic erections will bring him good luck in selling his land, which is worth 60 million baht.

Three penis statues stand prominently on the land of the 86-year-old Thai man, Thoop Lamoonmorn. The largest one-eyed monster, standing at an impressive 3.5 meters tall, is painted in a pristine white hue and takes center stage. US dollar surge hits Asian currencies: Thai baht suffers

Asian currencies experienced a dip today, with the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah bearing the brunt of the losses. This was mainly due to the rising strength of the U.S. dollar, bolstered by robust economic indicators and the threat of inflation from the Federal Reserve, which have pushed U.S. bond yields to a 16-year peak.

Yakult Thailand President Kanokpan Hetrakul offered to reveal secrets of the probiotic yoghurt drink that Thais have been slurping for over 50 years. But before answering questions, Kanokpan gave a quick history of Yakult, which was formulated by Japanese microbiologist Minoru Shirota in 1935.
