British lawyer latest to die in Laos alcohol poisoning tragedy

A British lawyer has become the latest fatality of alcoholic poisoning in Laos, taking the death toll to five people. Simone White is the tragic fifth victim in a series of suspected mass poisonings in Laos.

Kalasin’s Oldest Resident Passes Away at 121

Kalasin Province is mourning the passing of Ple Thongdaeng, affectionately known as the “Longevity Grandma,” who died on Nov. 16 at the age of 121. Her funeral was held at Wat Pa Non Kham, Ban Muang.

Ple gained national attention in 2019 when health officials identified her as one of four centenarians in Sahatsakhan District with excellent health and no chronic illnesses. Her family attributed her long life to her love of farming, simple living, and a diet rich in bananas, particularly the Nam Wa variety. Continued …

Thailand is gearing up to establish itself as a leading global food hub by 2026, with its food trade value projected to exceed 700 billion baht next year. This ambitious goal is largely driven by the private sector’s initiatives to enhance food-related industries and promote gastronomy tourism.

Taniwan Koonmongkon, president of the Thai Restaurant Assn. (TRA), revealed that Thailand’s food trade value is expected to reach 690 billion baht this year, with a growth rate of 5%. If no significant external threats arise, the trade value may surpass 700 billion baht by next year. Continued …

Thailand’s household debt rises to Bt1.2 trillion

Thailand’s total household debt has reached 13.6 trillion baht as of the third quarter of 2024, according to a report released by the National Credit Bureau (NCB), highlighting the gravity of the situation. Non-performing loans (NPLs) were estimated at 1.2 trillion baht in the same period.

While overall household debt growth has slowed, the report points to a worrying increase in bad debts of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SME loans have seen a 20% year-on-year increase in NPLs, a significant rise that could have broader economic implications. Continued …

Industrial estate developer Pinthong Industrial Park Plc is planning to develop two new estates to serve foreign business expansion in the country, driven by the impact of geopolitical conflicts and the growth of data centers. The new estates – Pinthong Industrial Estate 9 and 10 – span a total of 3,000 rai of land in the eastern province of Rayong.

Nissan said to cut or transfer about 1,000 jobs in Thailand

Nissan Motor will cut or transfer about 1,000 jobs in Thailand as it shrinks production in Southeast Asia, part of its recently announced global workforce reduction plan, two sources familiar with the matter said Friday.

Nissan plans to partially stop production at its Thailand Plant No.1, one of two car assembly plants in the country, and consolidate the operations into Plant No.2 by September next year, according to the sources. Continued …

Thailand banks on affordable solar power to ease price burden on citizens

A technological breakthrough could help alleviate the rising cost of electricity for Thais, the Ministry of Energy has said. Energy Minister Peerapan Salirathavibhaga announced on Wednesday that the ministry had successfully developed an affordable prototype of a solar power system equipment, set to be released to the public next year.

Taiwan’s Foxconn may take lead in Thai EV venture

Thailand’s state-owned oil and gas company PTT said this week it will reduce its stake in an electric vehicle venture with Taiwan’s Foxconn and is in talks with the company to take the lead in the project.
