Over 350 students in Hua Hin given training to prevent drowning deaths

Hundreds of students in Hua Hin will receive basic life-saving training this week as part of an effort to reduce the number of deaths from drowning.

New Thai prime minister set to take center stage in joint sessions showdown

The Deputy House Speaker-elect announced the highly anticipated installation of the new prime minister of Thailand is likely to be installed within the first three joint sessions of the House of Representatives and the Senate, scheduled over the next two weeks.

Deputy House Speaker-elect Pichet Chuamuangphan said that the three sessions are planned for July 13, 19 and 20, providing ample time for the election of the new prime minister. The coalition allies, comprising eight political parties rallying behind Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat, currently possess 312 votes in the House. However, they still require the support of 64 legislators to secure the necessary 376 votes to endorse Pita, whose party emerged victorious in the May 14 general election with 151 House seats. What Will Happen If Pita Fails To Secure PM’s Vote on July 13?

Several weeks after the Move Forward Party’s election victory, it is still not certain whether party leader Pita Limjaroenrat will become Thailand’s next prime minister: will he get enough supporting votes? Dengue cases surge threefold, with 33 fatalities already this year

Over 27,000 people fell ill with dengue fever during the first half of this year and 33 of them died, the chief of the Disease Control Department said on Thursday.

Hospital records show that from Jan. 1 to June 28, 27,377 people were treated for dengue, three times higher than the same period of last year. The DCD chief said 33 people succumbed to the mosquito-borne virus during the period. Continued …

Foreigners of various nationalities were arrested in a major anti-crime operation specifically targeting foreigners in Pattaya. Pattaya police on Thursday held a press conference to address the arrests of foreign suspects in five high-profile criminal cases in Thailand.

Environmental control dept gets new name to reflect climate change importance

The caretaker cabinet on Tuesday approved a proposal to rename the Department of Environmental Quality Promotion as the Department of Climate Change and Environment to lead the country’s climate change missions.

Warning issued over ‘soil fever’ surge amid rainy season

Health authorities in Nakhon Ratchasima have issued a warning over cases of melioidosis, commonly known as “soil fever.” The lethal and infectious disease is mostly found in soil, paddy fields, farmlands, vegetable plots, rubber plantations, and ponds.

Northeast Thailand villages ravaged by wild elephants

Agricultural communities in Loei, a province in northeast Thailand, are grappling with the daunting invasion of wild elephants from the Phu Luang Wildlife Reserve. The elephants have devoured crops almost entirely in some fields, leading to an earnest plea to the relevant government agencies for an urgent resolution.

35% of hotel operators say they will lay off workers to offset planned wage hike

More than one-third of hotel operators will lay off workers if a Move Forward-led government increases the daily minimum wage to the rate the party said it would during the election campaign, a nationwide survey of 120 hotel operators found. The survey was conducted by the Thai Hotels Assn. and the Bank of Thailand from June 9 to June 23.

Hotel association President Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi said 35% of the survey’s respondents said they would have to lay off staff to keep their businesses viable if the daily wage was increased. Continued …

With the economy boosted by the return of tourists, the combined wealth of tycoons on the 2023 Forbes list of Thailand’s 50 Richest rose nearly 15% to US$173 billion.

The Chearavanont brothers of the Charoen Pokphand group, who earlier this year completed the merger between their group’s telecom unit True and rival Total Access Communications, clocked the biggest gain in dollar terms to remain at No. 1. EV Board to urge new govt to pass EV 3.5 package

The National Electric Vehicle Policy Board (EV Board) will be urging the new government to pass the EV 3.5 package, which includes providing discounts for imported electric vehicles (EVs), establishing EV manufacturing plants, as well as offering incentives to stimulate investment in EV battery production facilities. It is due to come into effect on Jan. 1, 2024.

Svolt preps Bt1.25-billion EV battery factory

Svolt Energy Technology, a Chinese manufacturer of batteries and energy-storage systems, is spending 1.25 billion baht to build an electric vehicle (EV) battery factory in Chon Buri to serve Chinese and Japanese EV makers.

AoT announces expansion plans for Don Mueang Airport

Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) is looking to the future with an ambitious plan to expand Don Mueang airport over the next six years.

According to AoT’s CEO Kirati Kitmanawat, the AoT’s capital investment plan to develop Don Mueang International Airport phase 3 with an estimated investment of 36.83 billion baht has been approved by the Cabinet. The project is currently in the design phase and is expected to be completed and open for bidding in 2024. Don Mueang International Airport is one of two international airports serving Greater Bangkok, the other one being Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK).

The airport is considered to be one of the world’s oldest international airports and Asia’s oldest operating airport. Immigration offices closed on Monday, June 5; alcohol ban Saturday

Thailand will observe the Buddhist religious day Visakha Bucha on Saturday, with a 24-hour ban on the sale of alcohol.

Also closed on Saturday and Monday will be government offices, including Immigration, Department of Land Transport and district or municipal offices. Most banks will also be closed, with the exception of some bank branches located in shopping malls

Four-month cut in electricity bills comes into effect

Household electricity users will receive discounts on their power bills for the four months from May to August, government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri said on Wednesday.

Anucha confirmed that the subsidy, which was previously approved by the Election Commission (EC), will be effective retroactively from May, despite the power bills for May having already been issued. Continued …

Why 40°C is bearable in a desert but lethal in the tropics

This year, even before the northern hemisphere hot season began, temperature records were being shattered. Spain, for instance, saw temperatures in April (38.8°C) that would be out of the ordinary even at the peak of summer. South and Southeast Asia, in particular, were hammered by a very persistent heatwave, and all-time record temperatures were experienced in countries such as Vietnam and Thailand (44°C and 45°C, respectively).

In Singapore, the more modest record was also broken, as temperatures hit 37°C. And in China, Shanghai just recorded its highest May temperature for over a century at 36.7°C. Continued …

Pita case could force new election

Details of shareholding violation complaints against Move Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat will decide his fate and determine if the May 14 general election is nullified, according to caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam.

The Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand (ACT) is urging the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to look retroactively into the wealth of every active and retired police commander, especially highway police commanders.

The Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai province does not have the space or appropriate facilities to take care of “Sak Surin”, an ailing elephant who will return from Sri Lanka in July, said the park’s director on Wednesday.

Thailand’s MPI growth faces stagnation amid export slowdown and high costs

The Manufacturing Production Index (MPI) in Thailand is predicted to experience subdued growth of 0-1% this year, owing to a combination of domestic and international business challenges.

Move Forward’s deputy leader has given an assurance to operators licensed by authorities in respect of marijuana or cannabis that their businesses will not be closed down by the new government’s promise to control the widespread use of the drug in public and again outlaw its recreational use.

TAT forecasts tourism revenue of Bt3 trillion in 2024

The EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) will collect tax on carbon-intensive imports from Jan. 1, 2026. CBAM taxes will initially apply to five products – aluminum, cement, iron and steel, electricity and fertilizers – but are expected to extend to shrimp and other agricultural products later. Metal producers to face new tariffs

Steel and aluminum manufacturers should brace for a new levy on their exports as a result of the European Union’s (EU) introduction of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on Oct. 1 this year, says the Office of Industrial Economics (OIE).
