Lantao is on the road to recovery. The little long-tailed macaque had an open fracture in her right arm and was severely traumatized when found on the Thai island of Ko Lanta. At the time of her rescue, the baby monkey was blind in one eye and also severely malnourished.

But Lantao had a stroke of luck: volunteers took her to the wildlife hospital of the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) in the province of Phetchaburi, roughly a two-hour drive south of Bangkok. Continued …

Organ trafficking network suspect arrested in Hua Hin

A Japanese national with ties to criminal organizations in Thailand has been arrested following a history of violence and fraud. The suspect is also under investigation for possible human trafficking connections and is wanted on arrest warrants in both Thailand and Japan.

Police Lt. Gen. Phanumas Boonyalak, commander of the Immigration Bureau, revealed that immigration police arrested a 42-year-old Japanese citizen at a Hua Hin residence yesterday. He is accused of committing fraud by using documents and information from a Japanese company registered in Thailand to deceive both Thai nationals and his fellow Japanese citizens into investing in cannabis businesses and various other ventures. PM2.5 levels exceed safety standard in all of Bangkok

The air quality in all 50 districts of Bangkok was categorized as “orange”, or starting to affect health, this morning, the Air Quality Information Center of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said.

The center reported the average PM2.5 levels throughout the city at 51.2 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³), in excess of the country’s standard of 37.5 µg/m³ over a three-hour average (5am to 7am). Continued …

Chiang Mai wildfires still uncontained

Areas in two Chiang Mai districts where wildfires have been burning for the past two weeks have been declared disaster zones, as local authorities battle to bring the fires under control.

Chiang Mai Gov. Nirat Phongsittithaworn announced yesterday that five subdistricts in Chiang Dao and Omkoi districts were designated disaster areas where emergency relief measures and wildfire monitoring were being stepped up. Replacing half of meat and seafood production with plant proteins could save 100,000 lives lost from air pollution in Thailand, a new study has found.

Thailand’s annual crop-burning season causes air pollution lethal enough to prematurely kill 34,000 people every year but the solution lies in another agricultural element: plants. Specifically, plant-based proteins. Agricultural burning is the biggest source of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the country, which is one of the main air pollutants. One-baht drop in fuel prices promised for Songkran break

The Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) has announced a 1 baht per liter reduction in the price of petrol and diesel in an effort to alleviate people’s burden and encourage domestic travel during the upcoming Songkran festival.

Rice farmers to receive 1,000-baht incentive to plant other crops

The final draft of incentives to encourage farmers to plant other crops will soon be sent to the National Rice Policy and Management Committee (NRPMC) for approval, a well-informed source from the Commerce Ministry has said.

PKK man murders estranged wife

A 60-year-old man has been arrested after stabbing his estranged wife 11 times, fatally wounding her in their home in Prachuap Khiri Khan. Their son has spoken out, revealing that his father was deeply addicted to gambling.

The attack took place at around 5:30 am Tuesday in Ban Na Thong, Khlong Wan subdistrict, Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan. The suspect, identified as Sumpan Siangsai, used a newly purchased 50-centimeter knife to stab his wife, 53-year-old Sangwan Sualek, in the torso, with multiple wounds penetrating her heart and lungs. Phuket Scams Surge: 5,500 Victims and 413 Million Baht Lost

Phuket is witnessing an alarming rise in financial fraud, with over 5,500 individuals falling victim to scams in the past year, resulting in cumulative losses of 413 million baht. These figures were confirmed by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) Region 5.

There has been a sharp increase in scam activities since 2022. Last year, while there were 1,365 reported victims, who collectively lost 10.9 million baht. Baht set to further strengthen this year despite headwinds

The baht could appreciate further to 35.30 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, after hitting a four-month high of 35.72 early Wednesday, but political instability and deteriorating fiscal positions as a result of the government’s populist policies could limit the Thai currency’s rebound.

The Thai currency was trading at 35.72 baht to the greenback around noon Wednesday, compared to Tuesday’s close of 35.99, said Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of the research, banking and financial sector at Kasikorn Research Center. Continued …

Class-action suit threatened against CPF over Blackchin Tilapia

The Law Society of Thailand (LST) announced on Wednesday that it will file a class-action civil lawsuit against Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) for damages caused by the infestation of alien blackchin tilapia in water resources across 16 provinces.

At a press conference chaired by LST President Wichian Chupthaisong at the LST head office, the LST did not mention CPF by name but referred to “a business operator that sought permission and imported the alien species for an experiment in 2010.” Continued …

The agricultural drones project aimed at improving productivity has secured participation from 86 communities across 22 provinces in the first batch, a statement released by Thailand’s Digital Economy Promotion Agency said on Wednesday.

Thai thieves caught stealing cannabis plants to start business

Police arrested four Thai thieves after they stole cannabis plants from a farm in the Isaan province of Nakhon Phanom to fulfil dreams of being cannabis farm and business owners.

First day of digital wallet registration is today

The “Thang Raj” application, which is to be used to register for the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet handout scheme, was set to be ready for users from 8am today, the first day of registration for those who have smartphones, the Finance Ministry announced.

Factory output falls more than forecast as car output slumps

Thailand’s manufacturing production index dropped 1.71% in June from a year earlier due mainly to lower car production and higher energy costs, the Industry Ministry said on Wednesday, missing analysts’ expectations.

Little by little, the canopy of branches and interlocking leaves closes overhead as our vehicle rollicks deeper into the plantation. Pakamart Tongkam points from the driver’s seat into the stark thicket of rubber trees that now surround us: “When I was a child, I slept out there in a small hut while my mum and dad worked in the plantation through the night.”

Several years later, as an adolescent, Pakamart helped her parents with their daily rubber tapping. The routine was grueling, she says during a visit to Nathawi district in southern Thailand’s Songkhla province, a heartland of rubber production.
