Hua Hin golf course may be used for flood control

A meeting on flood defense planning was held on Thursday to assess the potential use of part of the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course as a water-retention area to help reduce flood risks within the city. The session focused on how existing open land could support a wider flood defense system for Hua Hin.

Discussions were held on site at the Royal Hua Hin Golf Course, where officials examined the terrain and surrounding drainage patterns. The aim was to identify suitable areas that could temporarily store excess water during periods of heavy rainfall and release it in a controled manner, reducing pressure on drainage systems and nearby communities. Narong Klunwarin, the newly appointed chairman of Thailand’s Election Commission (EC), has highlighted Feb. 8 as a potential date for the general election following the recent dissolution of the House of Representatives. This announcement comes amid rising tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, posing potential challenges for the electoral process.

The EC is set to meet on Dec. 15-16 to finalize the election date, aligning with legal mandates requiring a decision after the House dissolution. Preparations are well underway, with the EC having anticipated the dissolution, thereby completing the redistricting of constituency boundaries in advance. Continued …

Thailand extends gold medal lead at SEA Games

Thailand enjoyed another profitable day, scooping a haul of 24 gold medals to take its overall tally past the half-century mark at the 33rd SEA Games in Bangkok and Chon Buri yesterday.

The day started with romance for the Thai contingent after Ratcharat Yimprai and Kunsatri Kumsroi, a married couple, combined to snatch the gold medal in the mixed duo show event of the jujitsu competition. Continued …

Thailand and Cambodia agree on new ceasefire

In a significant diplomatic move, the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to renew a ceasefire following several days of deadly clashes. The renewed truce aims to halt all shooting and adhere to the original peace accord facilitated by Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

An escalation in cross-border violence threatened the original ceasefire that Malaysia brokered in July. Despite the initial agreement, Thailand and Cambodia engaged in a propaganda war and minor skirmishes persisted. The conflict stems from long-standing territorial disputes related to a 1907 map drawn during Cambodia’s French colonial period, which Thailand disputes. Continied …

Anutin rebuts Trump, vows to keep fighting

Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul today publicly rejected comments by US President Donald Trump, who had claimed that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to a ceasefire and described the landmine incident that killed and injured Thai soldiers as an “accident”.

Responding in English, Anutin posted: “It’s definitely not a roadside accident. Thailand will continue to perform military actions until we feel no more harm and threats to our land and people. I want to make it clear. Our actions this morning already spoke.” Continued …

Three leaders’ statements diverge: US, Thai, and Cambodian tones don’t match

Statements from the three leaders — Donald Trump, Anutin Charnvirakul, and Hun Manet — show “mismatched tones”, foreign media report, following their telephone calls yesterday.

Following the call US President Donald Trump and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, and a separate call between Trump and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, all three leaders have now either held press conferences or issued statements. International media note that the tone of the US president and the Thai premier does not fully align. Continued …

So Who Is Lying—Anutin or Trump? Or Did They Simply Misunderstand Each Other

While Thai PM Anutin, speaking after his discussion with Trump, stated that if there were to be a request for a ceasefire, it would have to be conveyed to Cambodia first, and only then could matters proceed.

About a little over two hours later, Trump posted on social media shortly after midnight Bangkok time yesterday (the morning of Dec. 12 in Washington, DC) that the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to “CEASE all shooting effective this evening.” “This evening,” when accounting for the 12-hour time difference between Washington, DC, and Bangkok, would still most likely mean Saturday night in Bangkok. Guns still blazing as Thai–Cambodian border war enters Day 6 despite Trump call

Clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border continued overnight in Trat province despite calls by Donald Trump with both leaders. Thai forces shelled artillery bases in Koh Kong and deployed F-16s at dawn to bomb a key bridge after detecting a Cambodian troop and weapons build-up.

In Trat province, clashes raged throughout the night and into the early hours, expanding as far as Hat Lek in Khlong Yai district. Thai forces struck artillery positions in Koh Kong and later called in F-16 fighter jets to bomb a strategic bridge after intelligence indicated that Cambodian troops and heavy weapons were moving up close to the frontier. Tenth Thai soldier killed as clashes intensify

Another Thai soldier has been confirmed killed in combat at Hill 677 in Ubon Ratchathani, raising the military death toll to 10 amid escalating clashes with Cambodian forces. The Internal Security Operations Command announced the loss yesterday, expressing sorrow on behalf of the Thai people.

Deployed with Second Army combat units, the sergeant with the 1st Special Forces Regiment was serving as a field radio operator when an explosive device struck him directly, killing him instantly on the contested hill in Nam Yuen district. Continued …

F-16s Bomb Bridge Near Trat Border

The Royal Thai Air Force carried out an air strike early yesterday, deploying two F-16 fighter jets to bomb the Chai Chum Nia Bridge in Pursat Province, Cambodia. The operation followed reports of troop reinforcements and the movement of heavy weapons near Thailand’s border in Trat Province, with the bridge identified as a key logistical route.

Thai security officials said the decision to target the bridge followed several days of monitoring military movements in the area. Naval forces had detected a continuous build-up of troops and the movement of heavy weapons close to the Thai border in Trat Province. These developments raised concerns about potential security threats and prompted coordination between naval and air force units. Continued …

Cambodian Rockets Hit Ta Kwai Temple, 11 Thai Troops Hurt

Fighting along the Thai–Cambodian border in Surin province intensified early yesterday, with Cambodian forces firing BM-21 multiple rocket launchers toward the Ta Kwai Temple area, injuring 11 Thai soldiers. The exchanges began in the early morning and continued across several flashpoints, forcing local leaders and villagers to shelter in bunkers for safety. This marked the fifth consecutive day of clashes along the border.

In the latest violence, Cambodian troops opened fire with artillery, followed by the first salvo of BM-21 rockets, alternating with further artillery strikes. Thai forces returned fire intermittently before fighting resumed along the entire border line. Continued …

Cambodia demands bribes from Thai citizens to return home

Thai nationals in Cambodia face challenges returning home through the Ban Khlong Luek border checkpoint in Sa Kaeo province. Reports indicate that Cambodian authorities prevented their crossing without providing an explanation. Relatives allege demands for payments of 12,500 baht per person to allow passage.

These developments occur against a backdrop of increased security measures along the Thai-Cambodian border due to rising tensions between the two nations. On Dec. 10, Thai officials ordered Cambodian nationals in Thailand to return home over security concerns, citing suspicions of espionage activities. Following this, Cambodian authorities reportedly blocked Thai citizens from crossing back, prompting a halt in the repatriation of Cambodian nationals from Thailand. Continued …

Election could put key economic measures on hold

The second phase of the popular “Khon La Khrueng Plus” co-payment scheme for another 10 million Thai consumers is among the key economic measures that will probably have to be put on hold as the country prepares to go to the polls.

Under the law, a caretaker government cannot carry out any projects or introduce measures that would create obligations for the next administration, according to an official at the Ministry of Finance. Continued …

Three-airport high-speed rail hit by fresh delay

Thailand’s flagship high-speed rail project linking Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumi, and U-Tapao faces further delays after the House dissolution pushed the government into caretaker status, preventing approval of key amendments to the CP-led PPP contract.

Large-scale investment schemes under the Ministry of Transport that were queued for Cabinet approval must now be held back for the next government. Among them is the high-speed rail link in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) connecting Don Mueang, Suvarnabhumim and U-Tapao airports, where the state is preparing to seek Cabinet approval to amend the public-private partnership (PPP) contract. Top tourist body concerned about Thai-Cambodian war’s impact on foreign tourism

A leading tourism industry body has raised concern over the Thai-Cambodian conflict and its impact on Thailand’s foreign tourism industry, with the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) saying in recent days that foreign tourists visiting Udon Thani and Pattaya are voicing concern about military clashes along Thailand’s long border with Cambodia, a conflict now making international headlines and expected to influence how foreign tourists decide where to holiday,.

ATTA Secretary-General Mr. Adit Chairattanannon also warned that the dissolution of parliament and the presence of a caretaker government could negatively affect planning and budget preparation for foreign tourism in the period ahead. Continued …

Ministry to push forward steps to stimulate tourism

The Tourism and Sports Ministry still plans to push forward two tourism stimulus measures and leave it to the caretaker administration to decide whether to continue them, while the private sector is more concerned with restoring flood-affected communities and maintaining peace along the Thai-Cambodian border.

Tourism and Sports Minister Artthakorn Sirilatthayakorn said the government still retains the authority to pursue tourism policies, even though the dissolution of the House of Representatives has taken effect. Continued …

Thai Airways Cracks Down On Baggage Allowance, Introduces Piece Concept

Thai Airways has announced a far-reaching overhaul of the baggage allowance system and is moving to a “piece concept” for both international and domestic flights starting March 2.

Currently, THAI has a weight-based system, which allows passengers to check in several pieces of baggage until the weight limit is reached, and for some reason, the airline decided that doesn’t work (for them) anymore. Continued …

Siblings return to Thailand after 50 years seeking to find the man who watched over them in 1975

Three American siblings whose father was stationed in Thailand with the US military in a media role in 1975 returned to the kingdom this week. Their mission was to find a Thai man who had cared for them as children.

The three, two brothers and a sister, carried sharp memories of Poon Pong-aree, who watched over them in northern Thailand. Armed only with memories, a few images, a name and a rough idea of their father’s old post, they still managed to locate him. A stark and emotional reunion followed. The siblings later confirmed that their sole purpose in returning to Thailand was to meet their childhood guardian. Continued …

Thailand’s Food Delivery Trends Reveal Nation’s Evolving Palate

Matcha has officially conquered Thailand’s beverage scene in 2025, with orders surging 300% to reach 6.5 million cups on Line Man’s platform, while spicy papaya salad with pickled crab (tum pu pla ra) claimed the crown as the nation’s most-ordered dish with over 8 million servings.

The dramatic rise of matcha reflects a growing appetite for what industry insiders are calling “affordable luxury” – premium products that feel indulgent without breaking the bank. Despite individual cups often costing upward of 100 baht, and some specialty versions reaching 250 baht, Thai consumers have embraced the Japanese green tea powder as more than just a trend. Forget Phuket, where 12 million tourists crowd beaches, while Koh Phayam keeps Thailand car-free

Phuket’s Patong Beach drowns under 12 million annual visitors. Hotels demand $150 nightly. Traffic jams stretch 45 minutes between beaches. Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi limits 3,500 daily visitors after coral destruction from overtourism.

What Thailand offered 30 years ago exists nowhere now. Except one place. Koh Phayam preserves authentic island Thailand where 1,287 residents guard empty beaches, $25 bungalows, and zero cars from mass tourism’s reach. Continued …

This represents a robust 30% year-on-year increase from the 89.6 million vehicles in use in 2025. This growth is maintained despite policy headwinds, including the removal of subsidies in many markets and the introduction of tariffs on vehicle imports by the US government. Continued …

Beach-cleaning time in Hua Hin

Hua Hin City Municipality has stepped up beach cleaning after monsoon winds pushed large amounts of debris ashore along the coastline. Municipal officials said the increased beach cleaning is essential during the northeast monsoon, when stronger winds and rougher seas carry plastic waste, wood scraps, coconuts and natural debris onto the sand.

Additional staff from the Public Health and Environment Division have been deployed since Monday to clear affected areas, with teams focusing on heavily used stretches of Hua Hin Beach. Continued …

Hungry wild elephant raids Hua Hin house for midnight snack of noodles and rice

A hungry wild elephant raided a house while looking for food. The jumbo emerged from a nearby forest before ransacking the roadside restaurant in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province in the early hours of Monday morning. CCTV footage shows the jumbo walking over to the eatery, wandering inside, and smashing kitchenware as it grabbed some rice and noodles from the shelves.

The tusker was seen tucking into the midnight meal before leaving the property in shambles. The frustrated owner who lives next to the restaurant in Hua Hin district, said it was the third time the same elephant had raided her shop. She said: ‘The elephant destroyed a gas cylinder and took packs of noodles and rice. It has caused so much damage to our shop. ‘This was the third time this year that the same elephant raided my shop.” Video …

The decision is expected to boost preservation efforts and support economic activity linked to breeding, tourism, and exports. Continued …

Southern Thailand to face 6 days of heavy rain, 8 provinces at risk

The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) issued an urgent alert yesterday warning that southern Thailand is set to face six consecutive days of heavy to very heavy rainfall from through Sunday.

Joint assessments by ONWR, the Thai Meteorological Department, and the Hydro-Informatics Institute show that rainfall will intensify due to a fairly strong northeast monsoon covering the upper Gulf of Thailand and the upper south, combined with easterly wind waves moving across the region. Wind and wave conditions in both the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are also expected to strengthen. Continued …

Thailand may lose US trade deal unless the government acts fast to restore Peace Pact

Business leaders in Bangkok are growing alarmed after Thailand’s trade negotiations with the United States were suspended on Friday. They flatly reject government claims that talks are still continuing and warn that the deal secured on Aug.1 could be lost for good without immediate action.

Executives say the pause comes just as Washington had become more open to improved terms. Now, unless the situation shifts fast, Thailand risks being shut out of its key export market, losing further U.S. investment and watching Western confidence evaporate. Continued …

Thailand’s moment of truth: modernize for tourists or keep patching potholes

As geopolitical winds shift across Asia, Thailand finds itself once again eyeing a profitable opening: the possibility of absorbing Chinese tourists redirected from Japan after Beijing’s unprecedented travel warning. But beneath the optimistic headlines and official photo-ops, Thailand’s readiness to handle a sudden surge of Chinese arrivals remains deeply questionable — and the country knows it.

For years, Thailand has relied heavily on Chinese outbound tourism to prop up its service sector and urban economies. Pattaya, Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai still feel the aftershocks of China’s years-long border closure, and hotels and tour operators are hungry for a rebound. Now, with political tensions pushing Chinese travelers away from Japan, Thailand sees what looks like a strategic gift. Continued …

Why e-bikes remain slow to take off

Thailand registers an average of 1.7 million new motorcycles each year and is the world’s fifth-largest producer, with more than 80% of output sold domestically. This underscores the strength and scale of the domestic market, which should, in principle, be capable of supporting the shift toward electric motorcycles.

Yet, despite substantial government incentives and growing momentum in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, electric motorcycles have not experienced the same level of adoption as electric cars. Continued …

Thailand to Lift 2–5pm Alcohol Ban

The Ministry of Public Health extended permitted drinking hours from midnight to 1am and launched a six-month pilot program to lift the afternoon alcohol sales ban between 2pm and 5pm.

(Editor: Three different sources for this story had different information, so we recommend waiting for the dust to settle to learn exactly what has been decided.)

Yesterday, the National Alcohol Policy Committee met to discuss the controversial drinking-hours regulations and the proposed cancellation of the afternoon sales ban. Deputy Prime Minister Sophon Sarum told the media after the meeting that the committee had reviewed the alcohol sales policies with the aim of supporting tourism and stimulating the economy during festival periods. He noted that the existing ban, which prevents the sale of alcohol between 2pm and 5pm, is outdated. Continued …

Hair transplants in Bangkok are gaining international recognition

Hair loss affects millions of people worldwide, and while there are countless temporary solutions, many are now turning to surgical options that offer permanent results. Among these, FUT hair transplants in Bangkok hves emerged as a popular choice for those seeking effective, long-lasting restoration at competitive prices without compromising quality.

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT), also known as strip harvesting, is a proven surgical method for treating hair loss by transplanting healthy hair follicles into thinning or balding areas. The procedure involves carefully extracting a strip of scalp from the donor area, typically the back of the head, where hair is genetically resistant to balding. The strip is then dissected under microscopic magnification to obtain individual follicular units. Continued …

The forum brought together more than 600 business leaders to discuss sustainable growth, digital innovation, and Japan–Thailand economic collaboration.

Thai rice sector in crisis as yields fall, costs rise, and export prices hit 15-year low

Thailand’s long-running rice crisis has resurfaced, with new data showing that yields per rai continue to decline, production costs are rising, domestic paddy prices are collapsing, and export prices have fallen to their lowest level in more than 15 years. Analysts warn these are clear signs that the competitiveness of Thailand’s rice industry is steeply deteriorating in the global market.

Assoc. Prof. Somporn Isvilanonda, senior fellow at the Knowledge Network Institute of Thailand, said that over the past 14 years under four administrations, government rice policy has remained trapped in the same populist cycle — pledging schemes, income guarantees, and direct subsidies such as “1,000 baht per rai”. Finance minister outlines steps for economic recovery

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas has compared Thailand’s current economic situation to “a car speeding downhill into a ravine,” warning that unless action is taken immediately, the economy will face a difficult recovery. He said the problem lies not only in the pace of short-term stimulus but also in the lack of investment in new infrastructure to support the “New Economy.”

Ekniti noted that Thailand’s past growth stemmed from “old blessings,” such as major infrastructure projects in the 1970s and 1980s, including the eastern seaboard. However, the country’s investment-to-GDP ratio has since plummeted from around 40 % to just over 20 %. Continued …

ASEAN+3 Navigated the Last Global Tightening Storm — Are They Ready for the Next?

ASEAN+3 demonstrated remarkable stability amid recent global financial tightening. Robust fundamentals, pragmatic policy measures, and effective coordination averted crises, highlighting the region’s resilience. Sustained vigilance and strengthened collaboration remain crucial to addressing future challenges.

As financial conditions tightened globally in 2022, the region was reminded of past crises like the 2008 financial meltdown and the 2013 “taper tantrum.” These events sparked corporate defaults and exchange rate pressures, raising concerns about ASEAN economies. Triggered by major central banks, including the US Federal Reserve, the recent cycle saw a rapid increase in interest rates, a stronger US dollar, and fears of renewed financial stress. By 2023, the key question was whether ASEAN+3, comprising the 10 ASEAN nations plus China, Japan, and South Korea, could withstand such upheaval. Continued …

Pattaya Nightlife Faces Strain Amid Changing Demographics

Pattaya, once the bustling nightlife epicenter of Southeast Asia, is experiencing significant changes in its after-dark scene. While bars and live music still thrive, many long-term foreign visitors note a dramatic shift in the atmosphere and the clientele. On social media, both tourists and residents voice concerns about these changes.

Some tourists now describe Pattaya’s nightlife as unappealing, with loud music and a different crowd profile becoming deterrents for repeat visitors. One European social media user reported skipping the city for eight consecutive years due to these changes. This sentiment is echoed by others who feel the influx of Indian tourists has transformed the city into “Little Mumbai,” altering the familiar vibe they once enjoyed. Continued …

Re: Expats in Hua Hin left stranded as bank accounts locked without warning

“Even though this fiasco hasn’t affected me YET, I’ve been following this very closely and to say it’s scandalous is an understatement. How in the name of reason, is a country that claims to be a first world nation, think it’s right and proper to do this without any warning whatsoever. Yes, I know there are Farang that buck the Thai system, but do your digging and find out who they are instead picking on the extremely legal Farang who pump millions into the Thai economy year upon year. Leave those of us who are here legally alone!” – Peter

Thai Public Urges Immediate Parliament Dissolution

In a recent surge of public sentiment, a majority of Thais are calling for the swift dissolution of parliament, going against the four-month timeline outlined in a political agreement. This sentiment was captured in a poll by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), which surveyed 1,310 people across the nation earlier this month.

The poll reveals that 59.2% of respondents want parliament dissolved as soon as possible, a clear indication of the public’s impatience with the current political climate. In contrast, 27.2% support the existing timetable, while a smaller fraction would like to wait until 2027. Continued …

Business community bewildered by the country’s 25 years of political infighting

Thailand’s economy is facing major headwinds and the looming threat of severe political instability following last week’s election of Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister, with the new short-term interim government sparking deep concern among business leaders, as the previous Pheu Thai-led administration had finally mapped a coherent path forward, only for that momentum to risk collapse. When you travel around Thailand in August, follow the rain and follow the flavor. This is the month for slow markets, noodle stalls under tin awnings, and dishes that stay with you longer than the weather. Continued …

Coca-Cola Promotion Expands to Street Food Outlets Across Thailand

The Coca-Cola system in Thailand — comprising ThaiNamthip Corp., HaadThip, and Coca-Cola (Thailand) — is scaling up its “COKE Foodmarks” campaign by expanding its reach to food outlets nationwide by the end of this year.

Building on a strong foundation of more than 4,300 current outlets, the campaign is now set to target vibrant street food hubs, bustling walking streets, and iconic districts across the country, including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Phuket, as well as cities like Hua Hin, Hat Yai, and Pattaya. Heavy rainfall expected across Thailand until May 27

Increasing rainfall, with isolated heavy to very heavy showers, is expected across Thailand from today to Tuesday (May 27), according to a weather warning issued by the Thai Meteorological Department this morning.

The public in affected areas is urged to be cautious of heavy to very heavy rainfall and water accumulation, which may lead to flash floods, overflows, and landslides — particularly near waterways, foothills, and low-lying areas. Continued …

Yesterday, users of the True Corp.’s network across Thailand experienced a sudden and widespread service outage, affecting both mobile phone and home internet services in several areas. The outage, which continued into the afternoon, caused major disruptions to work, communications, and online transactions.

True Corp. and Total Access Communication (DTAC) had previously completed Southeast Asia’s largest telecom merger, forming a combined market capitalization of approximately 294 billion baht. At the time, True’s top executives promised that the merger would create “endless opportunities” and immediate benefits for customers of both networks. Continued …

Thai Court Orders Ex-PM Yingluck to Pay 10 Billion Baht in Rice Scheme

The Supreme Administrative Court in Thailand has ordered former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra to pay 10.028 billion baht ($306 million) in damages related to her administration’s controversial rice-pledging scheme. This ruling partially reverses an earlier judgment by the Central Administrative Court, which had annulled a 2016 order from the Ministry of Finance.

The original order sought 35.717 billion baht from Yingluck, attributing her responsibility for alleged corruption and her failure to prevent financial losses as part of the rice-pledging program. This scheme was designed to support local farmers by buying rice at inflated prices, but it ultimately drew criticism for mismanagement and corruption, leading to significant financial deficits. Continued …

Ruling further destabilizes Thai politics

The staggering impact generated by the Supreme Administrative Court will not be on anyone’s pocket, but on the already-fragile political equilibrium of Thailand.

The court’s ruling on how much compensation former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra had to shoulder regarding losses in the rice-pledging scheme of her government will change everything. Continued …

Coup risk remains, warns Thai defense minister

Thai Baht Strengthens as Foreign Capital Floods into Bonds

The Thai baht has shown unexpected strength this week, touching the 32-baht-to-U.S.-dollar mark, driven primarily by a significant influx of foreign investment into Thailand’s debt market. This comes as the U.S. dollar loses its appeal as a safe haven asset, largely influenced by U.S. President Donald Trump’s extreme trade policies.

From early 2025 until yesterday, foreign investors have collectively made net purchases exceeding 70 billion baht in Thai debt instruments, with analysts foreseeing continued inflows given the anticipated high market volatility from Trump’s ongoing policies. Continued …

Asia must not succumb to tariff retaliation: Singapore

Asian economies must remain agile and not succumb to tit-for-tat tariff retaliation, a deputy managing director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said today.

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has confirmed the export of its inaugural consignment of 660 electric vehicles (EVs) in April. Tourism stimulus ‘likely a damp squib’, says stock brokerage

The recently approved tourism stimulus is unlikely to have a significant impact on the stagnant sector during the low season, given the limited budget allocation, although aviation and hospitality stocks may benefit in the short term, says Daol Securities.

The stimulus package is part of a broader emergency response plan aimed at counteracting the economic impact of the U.S. import tariff hikes. The tourism-related measures comprise three initiatives. Continued …

Thailand Not at a Dead End – optimism and opportunity on the rise

Despite global uncertainties and momentary dips, Thailand’s tourism industry continues to show resilience — and even signs of renewed momentum. As the first half of 2025 unfolds, officials and industry leaders insist that Thailand has not reached a dead end, with strong foreign arrivals, steady revenue, and a renewed belief that a little luck and a lot of effort will carry the nation forward.

Thailand welcomed more than 13.4 million international visitors from Jan. 1 to May 18, generating over 632.9 billion baht in spending. The top markets fueling this growth include China, Malaysia, South Korea, India, and Russia — with South Korea’s tourism surging by more than 10%, elevating it from the 8th to 4th most frequent source country. Army of Chinese travel agents, media en route to Thailand

Thailand’s tourism industry is preparing to welcome 500 Chinese travel agents and media members at the end of this month, hoping to revive a market that has plunged 32% compared with a year ago.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) plans to monitor the impact of the giant familiarization trip for one month to see if the market shows signs of avoiding the worst-case prediction of just 5 million Chinese arrivals this year — down 25% from 6.7 million in 2024. Continued …

I feared we’d be stuck on the beaten path in Thailand, but we paved our own

Thailand had been on our list for a while. World-famous Buddhist temples, ancient sites and street food beckoned. Known as the Land of Smiles, the country also made us want to understand better how Buddhist values, such as karma and merit, coexist with everyday life. Inexpensive accommodation and a subtropical climate added to the allure.

However, now that we’re lifelong travelers in our seventies (61 countries and counting), venturing off the well-trodden path is near and dear to us. Could we do that in Thailand, a country that attracted more than 35 million foreign travelers in 2024? Continued …

These align with the “Fresh Your Feel, Heal Your Soul” campaign, a journey that enriches life. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has invited tourism partners and the Thai public to embrace these three forms of holistic happiness: body, mind, and spirit. Continued …

Solar farm developer sees drop in revenue

Solar farm developer SPCG expects its revenue to fall this year after the adder tariff granted to its 36 solar farms came to an end in July 2024. The adder tariff allows the company to sell electricity at prices above regular rates.

This type of tariff encourages investors to build solar farms by adding an eight-baht tariff to electricity prices, increasing total tariffs, including the wholesale tariff of 3.78 baht per kilowatt-hour, to 11.78 baht per Kwh. Continued …
