Surge Reported in E-Wallet and Fake SMS Scams

Thailand’s Anti-Online Scam Center (ACSC) has warned of a sharp rise in new scam tactics over the past week, including the use of fake e-wallet reward messages and spoofed SMS alerts claiming to be from major brands.

Officials said criminals are now targeting victims with high-volume, lower-value fraud attempts, while impersonation scams continue to cause severe financial losses. One of the most serious cases involved a newly graduated nurse whose family was tricked into paying more than 800,000 baht after scammers posed as state officials. Continued …

Australia is set to become the first country to implement a minimum age for social media use tomorrow, with platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube forced to block more than a million accounts, marking the beginning of an expected global wave of regulation.

From midnight (1300 GMT), 10 of the biggest platforms will be required to block Australians aged under 16 or be fined up to A$49.5 million (US$33 million). Thailand’s SEA Games hit by chaos and criticism

With the 33rd SEA Games beginning today, Thailand should have been swept up in hype and excitement. The whole nation has, instead, been gripped by a sense of apprehension that this year’s Games, running until Dec. 20, may be remembered as the worst the kingdom has ever hosted.

Thailand has hosted the region’s biennial multisport tournament six times before, in 1959, 1967, 1975, 1985, 1995 and 2007, but never have its preparations and organization been under such intense scrutiny. Continued …

Rocket and Gunfire Exchanges Continue on Thai-Cambodian Border

Clashes on the Thai-Cambodian border have continued to erupt for a third day since Sunday, with new exchanges occurring this morning. Yesterday, escalated Cambodian military activities were reported across provinces neighboring Cambodia, notably Ubon Ratchathani, Buriram, Si Saket, and Sa Kaeo. Tensions have risen due to repeated claims of violations by Cambodia, including breaches of a ceasefire and aggressive actions such as alleged landmine planting. Thana Chaiprasit, head of the Thai delegation, confirmed that about 170 Cambodian athletes have arrived. The athletes and officials are staying in the same hotel, ensuring extra precautions for their security. Thana advised them to remain indoors and urged Thai spectators to maintain courtesy, emphasizing peaceful support rather than hostility. Continued …

Thai shrimp industry urging government to declare its recovery a “national agenda”

Thailand’s shrimp industry is urging the nation’s government to declare the sector’s recovery a “national agenda” in hopes of significantly boosting production and seizing a major trade opportunity in the U.S. market in 2026.

The Thai Shrimp Assn. is seeking sweeping policy changes to raise annual shrimp output from between 250,000 and 270,000 metric tons (MT) to a targeted 400,000 MT. This goal is primarily driven by a market shift in the U.S., where high import tariffs are currently hindering competitive shrimp-producing nation India and potentially creating a market gap of up to 300,000 MT. Songkhla waste-to-energy plant fast-tracked to tackle garbage crisis

Energy Minister Auttapol Rerkpiboon has moved to tackle Songkhla’s mounting garbage crisis by ordering an early start-up of a waste-to-energy plant, which can burn 500 tons of waste per day and generate 9.9 megawatts of electricity.

Auttapol said that after floodwaters in Songkhla receded, they left behind extensive damage to homes and communities, with more than 50,000 tons of waste expected. The Energy Ministry recognizes that the garbage crisis is causing serious problems for residents — from foul odors and hygiene risks to blocked roads — and has therefore instructed the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to coordinate with operators of ready waste-to-energy plants to bring them online ahead of schedule. ‘Tougher than COVID’: Thai businesses review 2024 and eye 2025

As 2024 draws to a close, Thai businesses are grappling with more challenges than opportunities, blocking prospects of sustained growth. Domestic pressures include a sluggish economy, fragile purchasing power, and high household debt.

Meanwhile, external factors are heating up, with a brewing trade war causing chain-reaction effects. Geopolitical conflicts also are spreading, acting as a ticking time bomb for the global economy. Continued …

Data paints economy as ‘black hole’

I am known for being pessimistic about the Thai economy. Apart from encouraging official economic growth figures of 1.6% in Q1, 2.2% in Q2, and 3.0% in Q3, I do not think anyone can be optimistic about the economy. It is obvious that GDP data and the actual economic situation do not go hand in hand.

It is beyond my comprehension that the non-performing loan (NPL) level rose 14.1% in Q3 while the economy expanded 3.0%. Shouldn’t it be the opposite when debtor’s income rises? Continued …

Thailand’s automotive industry at a crossroads

Thailand’s automotive industry stands at a crossroads. While it remains a significant player in the ASEAN region, its traditional strengths are under pressure from global trends and domestic challenges.

Thailand, formerly known as “the Detroit of Asia,” is losing its competitive edge as a major auto production hub and exporter, as overseas buyers are increasingly switching to electric vehicles (EVs). Although the country has attracted investments from several Chinese EV manufacturers, such as BYD and Great Wall Motor, bolstered by the government’s EV subsidy program, the burgeoning EV sector has yet to compensate for the slack in local production. For those who travel to eat, meals while away from home are precious. A marquee meal can be the most memorable highlight of a trip, and when you only get so many per day with no do-overs, there is literally no room for mediocre food. And even harder to stomach is when it’s expensive, inauthentic, or — even worse, in a world with such diverse cuisine — boring. In other words, a tourist trap restaurant.

According to a study by online passport photo service provider PhotoAiD, the top three criteria that make a place a tourist trap are above-average pricing, amenities tailored for tourists, and a lack of cultural authenticity. Continued …

What I Wish I Knew Before Visiting Thailand

I first visited Thailand a few years ago – a month of solo travel to avoid the rainy British winter. My first stop, Bangkok. I ate deep fried insects at Khao San Road and visited Siriraj Medical Museum, which exhibits grisly medical specimens in a decidedly maximalist fashion. I traveled south to visit a few of Thailand’s islands with a friend, then north to Chiang Mai and the small mountain town of Pai, which is popular with backpackers.

Last year I returned to Thailand on a hiking and kayaking trip, and visited the south of the country. We went to Cheow Lan Lake in Khao Sok National Park, a vast lake in the heart of Khao Sok National Park, where narrow karst islands jut out from the turquoise water. We spent the night in a floating bungalow, soaking up the tranquility and jumping into kayaks whenever we wanted to explore. Continued …

Microsoft unveils closed-loop liquid cooling design for data centers

Tech-giant Microsoft announced on Monday that it will start its “zero-water evaporated” liquid cooling systems operations for data centers in 2026. The design is said to optimize AI workloads and consume zero water with the use of a closed-loop design.

(Editor: Thailand is poised to be a leading center for data centers in Southeast Asia, posing concerns about water use in a country consistently battling drought conditions.)

The recommendations therefore called for stronger measures to tackle the growing impact of climate change, along with greater youth participation in decision-making. Continued …
