Drug Gang Busted in Hua Hin Villa

Police have arrested members of the infamous “Sergeant M16” drug trafficking network, a syndicate accused of moving more than 10 million methamphetamine pills, during a raid on a pool villa in Hua Hin.

The operation, led by Bangkok Metropolitan Police Bureau investigators and Romsai police, resulted in the capture of four high-value suspects, each carrying a government-issued bounty of 1.5 million baht. Thailand Tightens Mobile Banking to Curb Scams

The Bank of Thailand has announced strict new mobile banking transfer limits to combat rising financial fraud, capping daily transfers at 50,000 baht for children under 15 and seniors over 65 opening new accounts.

Daranee Saeju, the assistant governor for payment systems policy, stated the measure aims to protect vulnerable customers by introducing a customer profiling system that sets transfer limits based on risk. Continued …

Northern Thailand prepares for more flooding as heavy raifall expected

Surasi Kittimonthon, secretary-general of the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR), visited Chiang Rai yesterday to hold an urgent meeting, preparing for heavy rainfall predicted for the end of August.

Thai Navy finds evidence of Cambodian troops planting new landmines

The Thai Navy’s mine action unit has discovered a mobile phone in the Phu Makua area of Si Sa Ket province, which the Thai military said contained video clips and still images of Cambodian soldiers planting new anti-personnel landmines in violation of the global ban.

Phu Makua hill, an area of forested highland in Si Sa Ket, was fiercely contested during last month’s fighting between Thai and Cambodian forces. It is now firmly under the control of the Thai Army. Continued …

Thailand goes all in on AI — but can it be trusted?

Thais are embracing artificial intelligence (AI) like never before, with new research showing it’s become an “invisible” part of daily life — but concerns over fairness, bias, and safety are growing just as fast.

A report launched in Bangkok Monday by telecoms giant Telenor Asia revealed that 91% of Internet users in Thailand now rely on AI, up from 77% in 2024. More than half of respondents interact with AI at least once a day, while 28% use it several times daily. Continued …

Thai Hotels Association to challenge nationwide 400-baht minimum wage in court

Thienprasit Chaiyapatranun, president of the Thai Hotels Assn. (THA), has revealed that the association plans to file a petition with the Administrative Court to review the legality of the National Wage Committee’s announcement on minimum wage rates (No. 14), issued on June 17.

The announcement stipulates a nationwide minimum wage of 400 baht per day for hotels and service businesses, effective from July 1, 2025, without regional or provincial variation. The association views this new regulation as severely detrimental to the hotel industry, particularly in areas with fewer tourists and struggling economies. Continued … 

Thai industrial sentiment at three-year low

Thailand’s industrial sentiment index fell for a fifth straight month in July, hitting its lowest level in three years due to worries about the impact of tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said yesterday.

The FTI said its industrial sentiment index dropped to 86.6 in July from 87.7 in June. The index decreased to 87.7 in June from 88.1 in May. The survey was conducted before the United States set tariffs on Thai imports at 19%. Continued …

Cambodia’s border conflict with Thailand poses growing economic risks

Cambodia’s ongoing border conflict with Thailand is beginning to inflict significant economic costs, particularly in tourism, displaced communities, and remittance flows, according to an opinion article by Kosalthanan Neth, research fellow at the China-ASEAN Studies Center, Cam Tech University. The piece, titled “Economic consequences of Cambodia’s border conflict with Thailand”, was published on the Khmer Times website on Monday.

The analysis recalls the May 28 clash in the Emerald Triangle, where Cambodian and Thai soldiers confronted each other, leaving one Cambodian soldier dead and sharply escalating tensions. In the aftermath, border crossings were shut, Cambodia banned Thai imports of fruits, vegetables, telecoms, and energy, and both sides traded accusations over the causes of the clash. Continued …

Rice farmers in line for Bt114-billion aid

The cabinet has approved 114 billion baht worth of aid for rice farmers, said deputy government spokesman Anukul Pruksanusak. The funding received the green light during the weekly cabinet meeting yesterday. The 114 billion baht will support rice farmers through two major assistance programs.

The first program provides direct financial aid of 1,000 baht per rai, capped at 10 rai per household, to help farmers cope with falling paddy prices. The scheme applies to both off-season (2025) and main-season (2025/2026) rice production. Continued …

The Global Wealth Report 2025 by Union Bank of Switzerland (UBS) has ranked the 50 wealthiest countries in the world based on total household net worth. The United States leads with a total wealth of US$163.117 trillion (around Bt5,289.8 trillion), reflecting its powerful and stable economy, cultural diversity, and global influence from New York City to its vast natural landscapes.

China holds second place with US$91.082 trillion (around Bt2,953.8 trillion), combining ancient history with rapid technological advancement. Japan ranks third with US$21.332 trillion (around Bt691.9 trillion), blending tradition and innovation, with wealth driven by both industry and cultural heritage. Continued …

Free domestic flights for foreign tourists on agenda

Thailand is rolling out the red carpet with a generous offer of free domestic flights for 200,000 tourists, aiming to boost travel from September to November. The Tourism and Sports Ministry hopes this initiative will rake in 8.8 billion baht by luring travelers to explore lesser-known places across the country. Patong police stalled as ‘Arab’ tourist gang walks free

Patong Police are under mounting scrutiny as they continue to delay charges against six foreign tourists, described in official reports as “Arab,” who were allegedly involved in the brutal beating of a Thai motorbike rental operator. The attack, which took place on Aug. 10, left the victim hospitalized with a broken jaw and broken ribs.

The case only gained traction after a disturbing video of the assault went viral and landed on the desk of the national director-general of the Department of Provincial Administration, Nirat Phongsitthaworn. Bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.(We recommend checking with the bus company about this schedule, as it changes without notice.)

Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

For the return trips from Hua Hin, buses will depart at  9 am and 3:30 pm, stopping at seven locations, including the Hua Hin Bus Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Mahachai, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal, and Don Mueang Airport.

“These might help to make Hua Hin the “City of Happiness”: Turn the so-called “entertainment” areas (Walking St, Wonderland, Soi 80, etc.) into genuine family oriented bar/restaurant/cafe entertainment areas; keep the “seafood” wooden piers; have a bridge over Phetkasem road in downtown area to enable safe crossing; encourage fair taxi fares, instead of the “cartel” rip-off; stop the encroachment of food places on HH beach; stop dangerous windsurf and jetskis near the shore on HH beach.” – AJB

Heavy rain and strong winds expected across Thailand

The strong southwest monsoon continues to dominate the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, while the monsoon trough stretches across upper Myanmar and upper Laos, the Thai Meteorological Department said today.

Thailand to host FIVB Women’s World Volleyball Championship in August

For the first time in history, Thailand will host the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship, marking a significant milestone, as the event will also be held in Southeast Asia for the first time.

Thailand Rejects 0% Tax Deal with US, Cites Risk to Local Farmers

Thailand has rejected a 0% tax agreement with the U.S., citing significant potential impacts on its agriculture sector. The government is instead launching a 200-billion-baht (£4.5 billion) soft loan scheme to support private sectors and farmers.

Deputy Finance Minister Julaphan Amornwiwat affirmed the country’s firm stance, stating the 0% tax proposal is untenable due to international obligations and the vulnerable nature of the domestic agriculture sector. Thailand says nearing deal with US to lower 36% import tariff

Thailand is close to an agreement with the United States to lower a threatened 36% tariff on its exports ahead of the Aug. 1 deadline, according to Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, who expects trade talks to conclude within days.

The Southeast Asian nation will submit additional clarifications and final details of its proposal to U.S. trade officials in the coming days, Pichai said yesterday. A deal is expected to be announced before the new tariff rate takes effect, as Thailand has already provided the Washington with “almost everything” requested. Continued …

Will Indonesia regret its trade deal with Trump?

Be careful what you wish for, lest it come true. That ancient proverb comes to mind when considering the eagerness of America’s trade partners around the world to negotiate deals with U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. Four countries already have, with Indonesia the latest to do so – and possibly the first to regret it.

The United States has announced a complex, tiered tariff regime, including a 25% tariff on labor-intensive goods such as textiles and footwear, a 40% tariff on goods suspected of being “transshipped” or having content of Chinese origin, and a 50% tariff on so-called “strategic sectors”, including aluminium, copper, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals. No more changes to minimum wage this year, says minister

The Ministry of Labor has confirmed there will be no further increases to the minimum wage this year, saying the next shift will take place in 2026. Minister Pongkawin Jungrungruangkit said yesterday that two wage adjustments have already taken place this year.

The minimum wage is usually only adjusted once a year, he said after a meeting of the national wage committee, which includes representatives of government, business and labor. Continued …

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), under the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, has unveiled its 2026 strategy under the theme “Value is the New Volume”— ushering in “The New Thailand” and signaling a shift to redefine Thai tourism through quality, balance, and sustainability.

Sorawong Thienthong, minister of Tourism and Sports, said that despite global tourism facing several challenges in 2024, Thailand remains a leading destination, having welcomed more than 18.08 million international visitors and generated 1.4 trillion baht in revenue so far this year. Russian arrivals to top last year’s figure

Despite U.S. sanctions and intense tourism competition, the Russian market this year is expected to exceed the 1.74 million visitors recorded in 2024, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Thai sausages sizzle in global rankings

TasteAtlas, a global platform dedicated to cataloging local cuisines, has ranked Sai Krok Isan and Sai Ua among the top 50 most delicious sausages worldwide. Topping the list is Salsiccia, an Italian sausage made from minced pork, pork fat, salt, pepper, and a variety of spices like fennel seeds, cumin, garlic, and chilli.

Sai Krok Isan, ranking 23rd, is a local delicacy from northeastern Thailand. It is made from minced pork combined with rice, garlic, and salt, stuffed into cleaned pork intestines, and then fermented to develop a distinctive sour taste. Continued …

Thai villages win big for green tourism push

Thailand’s grassroots tourism projects just bagged six major accolades from the Pacific Asia Travel Assn. (PATA). Deputy government spokesperson Sasikarn Watthanachan credited the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (DASTA) and its community network partners for putting Thailand’s local experiences on the global stage.

Leading the charge was the Ban Na Ton Chan Homestay Community Enterprise, which clinched Thailand’s first-ever PATA Grand Award. The project was hailed for preserving traditional culture while offering immersive, sustainable homestay experiences that benefit the entire village. Continued … 

U Power inaugurates smart battery-swapping station in Thailand

U Power (UCAR) has launched Southeast Asia’s first operational smart battery-swapping station in Phuket. The Thailand station is said to integrate U Power’s UOTTA battery-charging and swapping system technology to improve the transmission of data and station control logic.

‘Moderately Serious’ Arsenic Levels Found in Kok River

Four out of five samples of water taken from Kok River in Thailand, which is a tributary of Mekong River, showed arsenic levels higher than the standard limit of 0.01 milligram per liter, according to a recent water-quality assessment by the Mekong River Commission (MRC), classifying it as “moderately serious”.

Thai PM suspended

Thailand’s Constitutional Court has suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra from her duties pending a ruling on whether she breached ethical standards in violation of the constitution, following a controversial phone call with Cambodia’s former leader, Hun Sen.

Revision of alcohol sales ban from 2-5 pm under review

The Ministry of Public Health expects scrutiny of a new bill containing a series of amendments to the Alcohol Control Act 2008 to be completed later this month, says Minister Somsak Thepsutin. The legislation will get rid of outdated military-era sales restrictions and ease curbs on advertising, but will also introduce some stricter regulations.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has issued an apology after the registration system for the “Tiew Thai Khon La Krueng” (Half-Half Thai Travel) co-payment scheme suffered a technical failure, rendering it inaccessible yesterday — the launch day for registration of 500,000 travel entitlements.

Spanish Tourists Rescued After Longtail Boat Capsizes Off Koh Samui

A longtail passenger boat carrying four Spanish tourists capsized late yesterday mornin, between Koh Samui and Koh Taen due to strong winds and rough waves, authorities have confirmed.

The world will have to learn to live with heatwaves, the United Nations’ weather and climate agency said yesterday, as much of Europe roasted in high summer temperatures. The World Meteorological Organization said that in the future, people could expect heatwaves to occur more often and be more intense because of human-induced climate change.

A popular temple in Samut Prakan, surrounded by the sea, serves as a graphic indicator that Bangkok could be reclaimed by the sea by 2050, an academic warned on Monday. Sonthi Kotchawat, an environmental expert, said Wat Khun Samut Chin in Samut Prakan was clear evidence that both Bangkok and Samut Prakan were facing a serious issue of coastal erosion due to global warming.

Businesses call for delay in minimum wage hike

The government needs to reconsider its plan to increase the daily minimum wage in Bangkok to 400 baht from July 1, as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) cannot bear additional costs in such a weak economy, which is expected to slow further in the second half of this year, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Bangkok is slated to be added to a list of provinces where the daily minimum wage is 400 baht, a campaign pledge of the ruling Pheu Thai Party. A pilot program in four areas raised the daily minimum wage to 400 baht on Jan. 1 this year. Continued …

New minimum wage could lead to hotel layoffs

Large-scale layoffs in the hotel sector could be seen during this low season if the government agrees to raise the minimum wage to 400 baht from next week as planned, while the Thai Hotels Assn.(THA) has submitted a petition to the prime minister, asking for the policy to be cancelled.

La-iad Bungsrithong, an adviser to the THA board, said that as five-star hotels in Chiang Mai had earlier been mandated with the 400-baht daily minimum wage, they had already felt an impact from the soaring wage costs, which are up 14% from last year. Continued …

The Thai government aims to finalize several new free trade agreements (FTAs) with global partners by 2026, with the deal with South Korea expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

She also confirmed that the European Union (EU) and Thailand are accelerating talks to finalize the EU-Thailand FTA as soon as possible. Phuket Fines Over 28,000 Foreign Tourists for Traffic Offenses So Far in 2025

Phuket officials have reported that 28,809 foreign tourists have been fined for traffic violations on the island to date in 2025. Russian visitors topped the list with 3,121 cases, followed by tourists from China (1,721), the UK (1,419), France (1,365), and India (1,069).

Since Jan. 1, the police have arrested 369 foreigners for various offenses. These include 87 violations of the Immigration Act, 65 cases of drunk driving, and 27 breaches of the Alien Employment Act. Re: Thailand tackles road safety issues

“I followed a traffic policeman on a bike all the way up Soi 88 from town to the one and only set of traffic lights. I thought I’d do a little experiment. In that 8kms, I witnessed him pass 11 people without helmets. Did he do anything, NO! All he seemed interested in was watching the farang in his mirrors 50 meters behind him that he couldn’t do anything about because I was driving legally! New rules! Total BS! Someone needs to get a grip on policeman plod!” – BP

Editor: I guess the good news was that there actually were police doing a patrol. Usually they just stay in their air-conditioned offices until they are called to do something. We have also done a similar experiment, counting 32 people on motorcycles, and only 12 with helmets. All Thais. And yesterday we saw a woman and her three children of various ages on a motorbike. Only the mother had a helmet. Can most Thais even afford helmets for their children, who will outgrow them in short order? Bottom line: Farang need to get used to the double standard. It’s not going to change. We’re guests in this country, so follow the law, even if it does not seem fair.

Thailand Tightens Rules for Foreign Drivers: Tests Now Mandatory

The Hua Hin Jazz Festival is set to return to the beach in front of the Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin on Nov. 28 and 29, organizers have confirmed. Hua Hin City municipality has advised motorists to avoid Nong Kae–Takiab Road between June 23-29 while resurfacing work is carried out. Officials said the resurfacing will involve laying asphalt concrete along a designated section of the road.

Thai business confidence slumps to 7-month low

The Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) fell to 88.1 points in May, the lowest level in seven months, as business confidence remains low, partly attributed to the impact of new geopolitical conflicts on the economy, says the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Wage hike to pose a test for restaurateurs

Raising the daily minimum wage to 400 baht will add pressure to struggling Thai restaurateurs, says the Thai Restaurant Assn. On Tuesday, the national wage committee agreed to increase the daily minimum wage to 400 baht for all workers in Bangkok from July 1.

The 400-baht minimum daily rate also applies to workers in most hotels and entertainment venues nationwide. A wild elephant believed to be between 50 and 60 years old has died after becoming trapped in a muddy waterhole in Kui Buri National Park. Authorities later discovered a bullet embedded in the animal’s body and signs of a severe internal infection, possibly contributing to its death.

Anuchart Art-han, head of Kui Buri National Park, reported that on Saturday, a concerned local resident notified park officials after spotting the elephant stuck in a muddy pool near Ban Ruam Thai, Moo 7, Hat Kham subdistrict, Kui Buri District. Two more bodies have been recovered from the rubble of the collapsed 30-story building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, bringing the death toll to 51, a rescue official confirmed yesterday. As of yesterday morning, 43 individuals were still missing.

A fire destroyed the debt-burdened Lanna-style Dhara Dhevi Hotel in Muang district early this morning. There were no casualties. Dozens of fire crews and engines responded. It took them three hours to control the blaze at the famous hotel in tambon Tha Sala.

Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Ministry has revised its tourism revenue forecast for 2025 down to 3 trillion baht, citing a mix of domestic and international factors that could affect the country’s tourism industry.
