Woman in Hua Hin Arrested for Allegedly Organizing Fake Weddings

Thai cyber police have apprehended a woman believed to be at the center of an elaborate wedding scam in Hua Hin. Wimonrat, the alleged mastermind behind this matrimonial fraud, has left many couples high and dry after pocketing substantial deposits for venue and wedding preparations that never materialized.

Wimonrat, a 37-year-old resident of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, was a wanted individual with no less than three different arrest warrants issued against her. These date back to early 2021 from courts across Thailand, including Samut Prakan Provincial Court, Chon Buri District Court, and Thon Buri Criminal Court. Her deceitful actions have reportedly caused damages exceeding 150,000 baht (£3,500). Continued …

Fuel Fund revs diesel price to 32.44 baht per liter

The Fuel Fund yesterday announced an increase in the diesel price by 50 satangs per liter, raising it to 32.44 baht per liter effective today. Despite reduced expenses, the fund still faces liquidity issues, according to the director of the Fuel Fund Office, Wisak Wattanaphap.

The Fuel Fund Management Committee convened and recognized the need to enhance the liquidity of the Fuel Fund at this time. Continued …

Over 1,000 illegal billboards pose safety risks in rainy season

More than 1,000 large outdoor advertising signboards across the country were found to have been erected illegally and could pose threats to public safety during rainstorms, an Interior Ministry spokesperson said on Friday.

‘Thailand needs to shift to high-tech industries’ as FDI lowest in ASEAN

Thailand secured only US$2.96 billion in foreign direct investment (FDI) in 2023, the lowest among ASEAN members, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said, as it urged the government to facilitate the country’s migration to high-tech industries to attract investors.

The Cannabis Future Network disagrees with the Public Health Ministry’s efforts to put cannabis buds back on the narcotics list, and it will protest at Government House next Tuesday, Prasitchai Nunual, secretary-general of the group, said.

Q1 GDP grows 1.5% y/y, above forecast

Thailand’s economy expanded 1.5% in the first quarter from a year earlier, official data showed today, beating analysts’ expectations.

Thailand could gain from US increase in tariffs on Chinese goods

The decision of the United States to levy higher tariffs on imports from China could benefit some industries in Thailand and push up exports of some products, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) has said.

FTI Chairman Kriengkrai Thiennukul was reacting to the recent announcement by the U.S. of raising import tariffs on most goods from China to 25%, while it will be 100% for electric vehicles and 50% for semiconductors, solar cells, and syringes and needles. A deadline set by cannabis advocacy groups is rapidly approaching for the government to justify its plan to reclassify cannabis as a narcotic.

More than 60% Thais support relisting marijuana as a drug

The majority of Thais support the government’s plan to put cannabis back on the national list of Category 5 narcotics, an opinion survey has found.

The survey by the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA Poll) found that 60.4% of the respondents “totally agreed” with the plan and 15.3% “rather agreed” with it. The survey was carried out nationwide among 1,310 respondents, at least 15 years old, on May 14-15. Continued …

One of the biggest changes in Thai tourism is how Thai tourism officials view prospective visitors to their country. For a long-time, the focus was on attracting high-income tourists with the Thai Elite program being a reflection of that desire. Thai mango exports more than double in first three months

Thailand’s exports of fresh mango in the first quarter this year increased 130%, to about 1.6 billion baht, compared to the same period last year, while exports of sticky rice increased 13%, to about one billion baht during the same period.

Baht likely to face near-term volatility

The baht is likely to be volatile in the near term, pending clear signs from the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) concerning interest rate cuts, with the Thai currency expected to slide to 37.25 baht to the dollar within 1-3 months, bouncing back to 36 to the greenback by year end, says Kasikorn Research Center (K-Research).

Thap Thai in Hua Hin declared disaster zone, landfill fire continues

In response to the landfill fire that has been raging for over a week, the Thap Thai subdistrict in Hua Hin has been declared a disaster area, enabling officials to use significant resources to combat the blaze.

Officials say they expect the fire to be extinguished within the next two days. The fire, which started approximately one week ago due to extremely hot weather conditions, has consumed a massive pile of garbage accumulated over more than a decade at the old landfill site, which spans 170 acres at Moo 1, Ban Nong Pranpuk. Survey finds schooling expenses have gone up 43% to a 15-year high

The cost of schooling is at an all-time high because of higher tuition fees, instruction fees and increasing prices of school supplies, amounting to an estimated 60.322 billion baht, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said.

Thanawan Polwichai, advisory chairman of the UTCC’s Center for Economic and Business Forecast, said the survey on “Cost of back to school 2024 for guardians” had 1,365 respondents throughout the country and was conducted from May 1-6. Continued …

Thailand wildlife officers rescued a baby elephant that was stuck in mud as they patrolled a forest for poachers last week. Rangers discovered the three-year-old animal while conducting searches at Thap Lan National Park in Prachinburi province.

They dug around the hole and laid down thin branches to create an angled pathway for the elephant to climb. Department seeks to speed up free trade negotiations

The Department of Trade Negotiations is pushing for free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with trading partners to expand trade and investment opportunities, as well as strengthen the economy.

Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said the agenda for the second half includes concluding Thailand-EFTA (European Free Trade Assn.) negotiations by the end of the year (a 10th round is scheduled for August in Switzerland), the third round of Thailand-EU FTA talks in June in Belgium, and discussing an FTA with South Korea in the middle of this year, with talks expected to conclude by the end of 2025 or early 2026. Thais undeterred by record gold prices, demand remains strong

Despite record-high prices, Thailand’s gold demand remains strong, with bar and coin investment showing robust growth in contrast to declining demand for gold jewelry, according to the World Gold Council (WGC) first-quarter Gold Demand Trends Report.

Bus driver dies, 29 passengers hurt in Lampang tour bus crash

A bus driver died and 29 passengers, both Thai and international, were injured- with two sustaining serious injuries- following a bus crash on Tuesday night. The tour bus was en route from Chiang Mai to Bangkok when it lost control, veered off the road and hit a tree.

Passengers Clash on Kuwait Airways Flight from Bangkok

Pattaya officials provide free water to drought-hit Koh Larn island

Residents of Koh Larn breathed a sigh of relief as the governor of Chon Buri, and city officials made their way to the island on May 7, bearing the gift of water. Thailand’s ongoing dry season had left the locals parched, thereby leading to this much-needed intervention that saw the distribution of 100,000 liters of free water.
