Cha Am Beach Sees Rare ‘Fish Crowding’ Phenomenon as Locals Gather Seafood

Residents and tourists flocked to Cha Am Beach in Phetchaburi Province yesterday to catch various sea creatures washed ashore due to a phenomenon known locally as “nuea bia,” or “crowding water.”

Armed with nets and baskets, they collected blackfin seabass, cuttlefish, shrimp, and blue crabs, which had surfaced and were stranded along the beach. This bounty offered locals and visitors a rare opportunity to gather fresh seafood for meals. Continued …

Fresh flood alert for parts of Bangkok

City Hall on Monday warned people living along the Chao Phraya River in areas with no permanent barriers to prepare for flooding next week.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration said residents of areas prone to flooding due to lack of an embankment should move their belongings to high ground and keep a close watch on the river level from Oct. 14-23. Continued …

Heavy monsoon rains and thunderstorms to hit Thailand regions

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has sounded the alarm for the eastern and southern regions, warning that heavy monsoons are on the horizon. With a 60% to 70% chance of thunderstorms, locals are being advised to prepare for potential flash floods.

Chiang Mai’s Ping River recedes, but downstream areas still at risk

Chiang Mai authorities announced that the Ping River, which had broken its banks and flooded the province earlier, has dropped to 3.85 meters, though downstream areas were still at risk of flooding. Muang Chiang Mai Municipality announced that the river’s level at the P1 measuring station by the Nawarat Bridge stood at 3.85 meters as of 10am on Monday.

The Chiang Mai Irrigation Office expected the water level to further drop to 3.7 meters by 3pm and said that if there was no more rain upstream, the Ping River should soon return to its normal level. Continued …

Hotel occupancy rate in Chiang Mai down 30%

Hotels in Chiang Mai saw the average occupancy rate decline by 30% over a three-day period of severe floods covering Oct. 4-6, which heavily impacted 1,500-2,000 rooms in the province.

La-iad Bungsrithong, board adviser for the Thai Hotels Assn., said the situation has been gradually improving since Monday, as many hotels in the affected areas had begun to clean up their properties once the floodwaters began to recede. Continued …

Headline inflation quickens in September

Thailand’s annual headline inflation quickened in September due mainly to higher prices of diesel and some vegetables, the Commerce Ministry said on Monday, and was still below the central bank’s target range of 1% to 3%.

The headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.61% in September from a year earlier, after August’s annual increase of 0.35%, and missed a forecast rise of 0.80% in a Reuters poll. Continued …

Thailand’s casino bill faces overhaul

The Fiscal Policy Office has completed public hearings on the entertainment complex bill and will submit its results to the Cabinet soon, a well-informed source said.

The source explained that the FPO has categorized the results of the hearing into 45 main points, which it will ask the Cabinet to consider and select for improving the draft. Earlier, the House of Representatives had studied and concluded that the government should allow entertainment complexes with casinos to be set up in the kingdom to attract foreigners and generate more revenue. Thai Mangosteen Retains Global Market; Growers Urged to Maintain Quality

TAT seeks 10 million arrivals in final quarter

The fourth quarter will require at least 10.5 million foreign tourist arrivals, or a 25% year-on-year increase, in order to reach the 36.7 million tourists targeted for 2024, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

Dammed in the Mekong: Averting an Environmental Catastrophe

Environmental degradation caused by infrastructure development in the Mekong basin, especially large-scale hydropower and sand mining, threatens the region’s ecological balance and the livelihoods of 70 million people. Over the past 30 years, developers have largely ignored the natural ecosystems’ environmental and social value, while the emergence of new infrastructure and industries has deepened inequality within states.

The government is contemplating extending welfare protections to freelance workers, including those in the sex industry, akin to those available to employees registered with the Social Security Fund (SSF), contingent on their payment of income taxes.

Flooding in six Thai provinces

Seasonal flooding is affecting six provinces in the north, northeast and Central Plain, disrupting life in more than 18,0 00 households in 27 districts.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said on Monday that floods triggered by heavy rain had caused major damage in 33 provinces across the country since Aug. 16 – four in the north, six in the northeast, two in the east, three in the Central Plain and eight in the south. Thailand will postpone a hike in the minimum wage to 400 baht per day scheduled for Oct. 1 by about two weeks due to a lack of a quorum at meetings of the committee working on the increase, a senior labour official said on Monday.

Law to tax income from overseas in the works

The Thai Revenue Department is drafting a law to tax the income of individuals residing in Thailand that originates from overseas. The draft follows the international principle of worldwide income under the residence rule, said Kulaya Tantitemit, the director-general of the department.

This principle holds that income earned by an individual, regardless of its source country, must be taxed by the country where the individual resides for a specified period. Continued …

Loss of forest areas in Nan of concern

The northern province of Nan is home to one of the country’s key watershed forests, the source of several major waterways, including the Chao Phraya River. This forest area was declared a first-grade national forest in the 1960s.

Inflation in September likely to continue upward trend of last few months

The general inflation rate for September is expected to see a slight increase over August, likely ranging between 0.5% and 0.7%, according to Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO).

Upturn in Electronics and Gold Push July’s Exports to Highest in Over Two Years

In July, Thai exports rose 15.2% year-on-year, reaching USD25,720.6 million, marking the highest growth in over two years. This surge exceeded analysts’ expectations, influenced by improved global demand, particularly in the electronics sector.

AOT aiming high with airport plans

Airports of Thailand (AOT) has outlined an expansion of its six international airports to manage 210 million passengers by 2032. Kerati Kijmanawat, AOT director, on Friday outlined the Ministry of Transport’s strategic plan for 2023-2027, which aims to make Thailand a regional aviation hub.

As part of that, he said that Suvarnabhumi International Airport aims to have 120 million passengers by 2030, while Don Mueang International Airport expects to reach 40 million in the same year. Chiang Mai International Airport will serve 20 million passengers by 2032, Phuket International Airport will handle 18 million passengers by 2028, and Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai International Airport and Krabi International Airport will each serve 6 million passengers by 2032. Singapore to build mega airport terminal

Singapore will start construction of a new mega terminal at its Changi Airport in the first half of next year, aiming to lift the aviation hub’s annual passenger handling capacity by another 50 million.

June inflation sees big drop

Thailand reported a month-on-month drop in inflation in June to 0.62 %, compared to 1.54% in May, a decline attributed to the end of the low base impact of electricity costs from the previous month, Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO), said on Friday. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose year on year to 108.50 in June, up from 107.83 in June 2023.

Headline inflation up 1.54%, above forecast

Thailand’s headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.54% in May from a year earlier, after the previous month’s annual rise of 0.19%, the Commerce Ministry said today.

The May figure compared with a forecast increase of 1.19% in a Reuters poll and marked the first time since April 2023 that the headline inflation rate returned to the central bank’s target range of 1% to 3%. Continued … 

FTI Predicts 700 Business Closures if Bt400 Minimum Wage is Implemented

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) cautions that around 700 more factories may close by year’s end if the government implements a standard Bt400 minimum wage nationwide.

KKP wary on baht outlook despite uptick

The baht has posted a short-term gain, rising to a two-week high of stronger than 36.5 to the dollar on Thursday, but Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group (KKP) warns the Thai currency could depreciate because of Thailand’s structural problems.

Developers beg BOT to ease loan measures as housing market slumps

The Thai Condominium Assn. is calling on the Bank of Thailand to ease its loan-to-value (LTV) ratio measure when considering housing loans, as well as consider lowering interest rates to help revive the real-estate sector.

Water problems escalate in Hua Hin

Expat News is seeing online reports of widespread water rationing in Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. The Pran Buri Dam, which supplies 90% of Hua Hin’s water supply, is reportedly at 25% of capacity, while the city seeks more water from the Phetchaburi dam.

There are reports of launderettes closing for lack of water, restaurants and other businesses closing or rationing water. Hotels and other large businesses are using water trucks to replenish their tanks.

With the temperatures expected to increase over the next two weeks, the water shortage problem will not go away until the rainy season arrives.

Thailand grapples with scorching 43C heatwave

The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) issued a health warning today as Thailand grapples with a heatwave, as temperatures soar to extreme highs of up to 43 degrees Celsius in the north, northeast, and central regions, compounded by moderate to high levels of dust accumulation and smoke haze.

Today, the country is enveloped in a heat-induced low-pressure system, leading to predominantly hot to very hot weather conditions and clear skies during the day, prompting a strong recommendation for the public to take care of their health by avoiding prolonged outdoor activities. Continued …

Water crisis hits Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Samui, tap water rationed

On Koh Pha Ngan, a water crisis since late March has led to a stringent rationing of tap water, which affected both locals and tourists. The rationing, operating on a rotational basis, leaves some areas parched on certain days while others savor the flow. A meager 3,500m3 to 4,000m3 of water trickles through the pipes daily, barely meeting the island’s thirst.

Cadmium disaster zone declared

The governor of Samut Sakhon province has declared two foundries in Muang district disaster zones after finding 15,000 tons of carcinogenic cadmium waste illegally acquired from Tak province.

March headline inflation misses central bank target for 11th month

Thailand’s headline consumer price index dropped for the sixth straight month in March, the commerce ministry said, and was outside the central bank’s target range for the 11th straight month.

Foreign buyers from China and Russia dominated the Thai condominium market in 2023, as per data from the Real Estate Information Center (REIC). The report disclosed a total of 14,449 units, valued at 73.2 billion baht, were purchased by international buyers, marking a 25% increase from 2022.

Groups move ahead in replacing overhead wiring

Four major organizations – the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA), the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA), the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration – have joined forces to replace overhead cables with underground ones along 116 routes. This substantial project, spanning across both Bangkok and other provinces, will cover a total distance of 213 kilometers.

Scientists spooked by ghost shark sighting off Thailand coast

Scientists have been spooked by the ghoulish discovery of a ghost shark swimming off the Andaman coast of Thailand. Researchers revealed the ghost shark is a new species named Chimaera supapae. It boasts a formidable head, oversized eyes, and delicate, feather-like fins.

Big problems, and big tax income, from legalized casinos

Thailand could receive an income of 50 billion to 100 billion baht per year were casinos legaliszed, money that could be put toward taxes and national development, according to Thanawat Phonwichai, president of the University of Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

However, legalizing casinos often comes with a cost, he said, such as drug addiction and gambling, and the rise of transnational crimes. Thanawat also warned that casinos should not be built in densely populated areas. Continued …

Inflation slowing, seen at 1% this year

Canadian Tourist Dies After Falling Off Moving Train

A young Canadian man died Wednesday night after falling off a fast train running from Bangkok to Chumphon after going out of the carriage to smoke a cigarette as it was moving up and down during the journey.

Elephant Tramples Owner to Death

Thailand said not in a big enough crisis to warrant huge loan for digital wallet

The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) has come up with an opinion on the government’s 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme, questioning its transparency and necessity in the current economic climate.

Apart from listing the pain points of the scheme, the watchdog also called on the Election Commission (EC) to look into the discrepancies between the Pheu Thai Party’s initial policy proposal and its eventual presentation before Parliament in September. The Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking (JSCCIB) on Wednesday maintained its gross domestic product growth prediction for the year at 2.8%-3.3%, but warned that continuous decline in inflation rates were a sign of a weak economy.

Myriad risk factors still loom over rice exports this year, notably the volatility of exchange rates, the declining competitiveness of Thai rice, intense price competition, the impact of the El Niño weather phenomenon, and India’s restrictive export policy, according to the Thai Rice Exporters Assn.

Chookiat Ophaswongse, the association’s honorary president, said the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture predicted global milled rice production would remain stable at 513 million tons this year, with China the largest producer at 144 million tons, followed by India at 132 million tons.
