Auto output could hit 14-year low

 

Thailand’s automotive production could plunge to a 14-year low this year, excluding the pandemic years of 2020-22, dipping to 1.65 million units, though monthly production is expected to start improving slowly in the fourth quarter, says Krungsri Securities (KS).

Regarding this year’s tourism revenue goal of 3.5 trillion baht ($95 billion), with 36.7 million foreign tourists expected, Minister of Tourism and Sports Sermsak Pongpanich expressed serious concerns about reaching the target.

Police Lt. Gen. Itthiphol Ithisarnronnachai, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, yesterday inspected the new automatic passport control gates at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

“It is upsetting the Thai tax authorities want to double tax expatriate retirees, etc. As most of us live on a fixed income, it is already difficult to pay for food, rent, utilities, etc.

“Many of us pay heavily to support a Thai family and outside relatives with consistent monetary support. Now we are to be burdened with additional taxation? In many countries where we originated from, we are already taxed heavily and every dollar counts.

“This new idea of double taxing expatriates will have unintended consequences for Thai revenue aspirations. Many retired people will not be able to pay more tax than they already are already paying in their home countries. Or, even if they are able, they will deeply resent being double taxed. This idea of double taxation will have unintended consequences for the Thai economy.

“Many of us who have bought homes and condos will sadly be leaving Thailand. Some of us who support entire Thai families will reluctantly be doing the same. Those who are renting homes or apartments can leave more easily. The Thai economy will be impacted by the exodus of retired expats. This is an ill conceived idea but I am sure this Thai double tax will continue to be enacted by the Thai tax enforcers.

“Many foreigners who have lived in Thailand for years or even decades will soon leave Thailand, and not look back. It feels like the Thai government, by double taxing us, does not want foreigner retirees to live in Thailand. If that is their goal then they will surely succeed.” – Left Already

(Editor note: Scores of countries already have tax agreements with Thailand that will protect expats living in Thailand from the planned tax. The author apparently hails from a country that does not have such a tax treaty with Thailand. Expats from those countries will definitely feel the effects.)

Lots of rain forecast for Hua Hin

The Thailand Meteorological Department has issued a weather warning, forecasting heavy rain for Hua Hin over the next week.

Thunderstorms are expected in 60% of the area, with heavy rainfall in some places such as Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Phatthalung. Temperatures will range from 23-27°C at the minimum and 31-34°C at the maximum.

Survey finds schooling expenses have gone up 43% to a 15-year high

The cost of schooling is at an all-time high because of higher tuition fees, instruction fees and increasing prices of school supplies, amounting to an estimated 60.322 billion baht, the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) said.

Thailand welcomes cooler mornings as temperatures dip

A high-pressure system or moderate cold air mass continues to cover Thailand and the South China Sea, leading to cooler morning temperatures across several regions of the country. The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) forecast that the north, northeast, central, eastern, and upper southern parts will experience cold weather in the mornings.

In the north, residents woke up to chilly conditions with temperatures expected to drop by 1-2 degrees Celsius. There is a 20% chance of thunderstorms, particularly in provinces such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lamphun, Lampang, Tak, and Kamphaeng Phet. Continued …

Swiss Man Admits Killing Missing Thai Wife

A Swiss man who is the second husband of a Thai woman who inherited 13 million baht from her first Swiss husband upon his death in 2021, and has been missing since Jan. 8, has now confessed to having killed her.

Thai durian exports to China surged 81.7% to a record 90 billion baht in 2023, according to the Department of Foreign Trade. Shipments to China accounted for 70% of Thailand’s total durian exports last year.

Thai baht falls on political uncertainties, Asian FX declines

The Thai baht hit a one-week low on Thursday on lingering political uncertainties after the populist Pheu Thai party took the lead in efforts to form a government, while other emerging Asian currencies fell against a firm U.S. dollar. The baht weakened 0.6% and equities in Bangkok shed 0.5%, a day after the Bank of Thailand raised its key interest rate by 25 basis points.

Southeast Asia’s second largest economy has been in political limbo since the May 14 election, and the latest twist came as the Pheu Thai party abandoned support for the reformist Move Forward party that had won most seats but twice failed to get parliament’s approval for its prime ministerial candidate. The southwest monsoon prevailing over the Andaman Sea, most of the country, as well as the Gulf of Thailand, combined with a low-pressure system over the upper coast of Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin, will continue to bring heavy to very heavy rain to 43 provinces,mainly in the north, northeast and eastern regions.

Debt-ridden Electricity Authority of Thailand (EGAT) cannot yield to any further requests for cheaper electricity bills in the next four-month cycle, as this would affect its future investment in the power infrastructure.

A pickup truck collided with a train in the early hours of this morning, killing eight Thai people and injuring three others near Klong Udon Chonlajon in Chachoengsao province near Bangkok.

Artificial rainmaking is PKK’s latest answer to drought conditions

In response to the severe water shortages affecting Prachuap Khiri Khan province, the director-general of the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation, Supit Pitaktham, has instructed the acceleration of artificial rain-making operations.

Heavy rainfall predicted across 41 Thai provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department today reported forecasts of continued rainfall affecting 41 provinces, with 60% of the territories, including Bangkok, expected to experience heavy rainfall.

The tropical depression in the southwest monsoon is covering the Andaman Sea and Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, as well. This, combined with a considerable low-pressure system based in northern Vietnam, is causing persistent rain in Thailand. Vehicle registration goes digital

With digital technology now playing a role in just about every aspect of our lives, vehicle registration booking is the latest service to get a digital upgrade.

The aim is to reduce steps, increase convenience and efficiency, and enhance citizen satisfaction, government deputy spokeswoman Ratchada Thanadirek said yesterday, adding that the Department of Land Transport (DLT) is an agency extensively used by the public, especially for booking vehicle registration numbers through the internet system at the car registration number reservation website. Heavy rainfall is expected in 33 provinces across Thailand, with the southern region facing a high risk of flash floods and landslides. The Thai Meteorological Department urges citizens to remain vigilant to sudden flooding from June 2 as 70% of the area is expected to experience torrential downpours.

The department has issued a 24-hour weather forecast warning of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in certain areas of the eastern and southern provinces. Bangkok Bank raises interest rates on deposits and loans

Following the Bank of Thailand’s decision to raise its policy interest rate on May 31 by 25 basis points to 2%, the Bangkok Bank Plc (BBL) today announced that it has raised interest rates for deposits and loans, effective as of June 2 amid the steady growth of the Thai economy.

According to BBL’s Executive VP, Suvarn Thansathit, the interest rates on deposits have been raised by 0.05-0.25%. The interest rate for savings deposits is now 0.60% per annum, while interest for 3-month fixed deposits is 0.95% per annum. Fixed deposits for 6 months now earn 1.05% per annum. Continued …

Delay to 2024 confirmed for Hua Hin railway and new station construction

The double track rail line between Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan is set to be open by next year, a spokesperson for the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has said.

In an update on the project provided to the Thai government’s public relations department, Ekarat Sri-arayanpong, SRT’s public relations director, said that the majority of the civil engineering work for the project has already been finished. Continued …

Over 100 lives lost, 1,000 injured in road accidents

According to the director general of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, Boontham Lertsukheekasem, 114 fatalities and 1,064 injuries were recorded due to road accidents nationwide during the Songkran holiday. Between Tuesday and Thursday, there were 1,055 traffic incidents leading to these casualties a report today revealed.

Chiang Mai, a province in the north, experienced the most accidents with 38 reported incidents. Bangkok saw the highest fatality rate with nine deaths. Chiang Mai, along with the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, had the highest count of injured individuals, with 40 each, according to Boontham. Continued …

Pathum Thani Songkran festival: Nearly 20 knives and weapons seized by officials

Pathum Thani’s Klong Luang district held a two-day Songkran festival, but it wasn’t all fun and games. In an effort to promote safety and prevent violence, officials set up checkpoints around Khlong Sam Road to check for weapons and drunk drivers.

Royal Thai Navy ship sinks off coast in Prachuap Khiri Khan

A huge rescue mission has been launched after a Royal Thai Navy ship sank off the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan on Sunday night.

Reports have said that at least 30 sailors were rescued from the water after the HTMS Sukhothai sank approximately 20 nautical miles from land near Bang Saphan Noi. All crew members were said rescued.

According to a statement from the Royal Thai Navy, the HTMS Sukhothai ran into strong waves and high winds, which caused the vessel to tilt. The incoming water disabled the ship’s engines and communications systems before it capsized at approximately 11:30pm. Continued …

‘Day for Kids’ at Kingpetch Park Jan 1

The Sang Foundation is again planning the 2023 “Day For Kids” event Jan. 1, benefiting local families in need.

Starting at 11am at Pone Kingpetch Park (next to the Red Cross behind the main municipality building), the day includes childrens’ games, music and workshops, and some seasonal treats for the kids. The foundation will also distribute meals, clothing, books and toys.

Thailand’s higher electricity prices pushing its competitiveness lower

The Prayut Chan-o-cha government’s mismanagement is leading to higher electricity prices, which will lead to higher product prices and reduce the country’s export competitiveness, a representative of the private sector said.

“These burdens that are being pushed on to the private sector and consumers, and it is coming from the government’s planning, which now requires reconsideration,” said Isare Rattanadilok Na Phuket, the deputy chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI).

Free tune-up offered to Thai motorists before they head off for New Year’s

The Land Transport Department is joining up with private and public partners to provide a free comprehensive vehicle check-up before people start hitting the road for the New Year break.

Deputy government spokesperson Thipanun Sirichana said on Sunday that the department wants all cars, pick-up trucks and motorcycles to undergo a thorough check under the “Free Vehicle Check for Safe Driving” scheme.

In Thailand’s conflict-hit south, women community leaders are using food, education as tools for peace

Sompong Ad-Inmong was a street food vendor in 2004, when Islamic insurgents launched simultaneous attacks on 11 government locations and security checkpoints in the Muslim-dominated provinces of southern Thailand.

More than 100 insurgents and five members of the security forces were killed.

The attacks prompted Ad-Inmong to become a community volunteer and she has since found creative ways to bring neighbours closer together – from weaving baskets to sharing food.

“The conflicts come from outside. We are a model village, where Muslims and Buddhists live together peacefully,” said Ad-Inmong, currently based in the Panare district of Pattani province. Continued …

Furious elephant stomps people at ordination ceremony in Buriram

Ten people were injured after an elephant went on a rampage during an ordination ceremony at a temple in Buriram province on Saturday, local officials and residents said.

The elephant stomped an elderly woman on her hip and severely injured her, while another woman said her arm was broken in the attack.

A hungry herd of elephants went knocking on doors in a Prachin Buri village early yesterday morning, searching for food or water, as drought drives them out of their reserve.

Frightened villagers awoke to the sounds of wild elephants shuffling around in their yards, rooting for veggies, early on Saturday.

Enforce effective laws to control cannabis consumption in Thailand: activist

Putting laws in place and enforcing them properly is the only way to control the consumption of cannabis, the leader of a network on cannabis legislation said.

Prasitchai Nunuan, whose group has taken on many environment and rights-related issues, made this comment after opposition parties, namely Pheu Thai and Move Forward, called on the government to list cannabis as a narcotic again.

The Thai PM has praised the resilience of the country’s tourism sector after Thailand scooped top place in the Agoda Gold Circle Awards. Government spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri says Thailand won the top spot for being the Asian country with the most award-winning hotels, according to the online booking platform.

The awards are selected based on hotel reviews from Agoda users. Thailand boasts 246 hotels that have won Gold Circle Awards, while Taiwan has 209, and Japan has 198.

Heavy rains close Gulf ferries, Surin Islands for 2 days

Irishman dies in kayaking incident in Thailand

A 22-year-old man has died after his boat capsized while kayaking in Thailand. Odhran O’Neill from Lurgan, County, Armagh, was last seen in Khao Sok National Park on Saturday at 13:00 GMT.

O’Neill’s uncle, David O’Dowd, told the BBC his nephew was only 4.5m (15ft) from a jetty when his boat capsized.

Deaths from Covid were up in the period from Dec. 4-10. Also. the number of lung infections and need for intubation increased markedly.

The Department of Disease Control website said hospital admissions were slightly down at 3,961. This equated to 566 a day.
