Experts give Srettha govt an ‘F’ for handling Thailand’s education crisis

Despite one year in office, the Srettha administration has yet to set a clear direction for improvement in Thailand’s stagnating education system.

84% of people would vote for new People’s Party tomorrow

Eighty-four percent of respondents to a recent poll said they would vote for the brand-new People’s Party if they were about to cast ballots in a general election tomorrow.

Of a total of about 51,000 people who responded in the latest poll via Matichon’s YouTube channel to the question of which specific party they would support if the election was held tomorrow, 84% of the respondents said they would vote for the People’s, a resurrection of the court-dissolved Move Forward. Positioning Thailand as a hub for senior citizens to enjoy life post-retirement

The current global trend of social change toward an aging society is becoming more evident. According to the United Nations’ World Population 2022 report, the global population is projected to reach 8 billion, with 10% being over the age of 65. This percentage is expected to increase to 16% by 2050.

In Thailand, by 2024, the country will have fully transitioned into an aging society. Data from the Ministry of Interior shows that in 2023 Thailand had approximately 13 million people aged 60 and above, making up one-fifth of the total population of 66,057,967. This increase in the elderly population presents an opportunity for businesses catering to this demographic, particularly in the elderly-care sector or “nursing homes”, which are experiencing growth in Thailand. Rice farmers to sue if water is drained into their rice fields

Rice farmers in the Sena district of Ayutthaya province are threatening to sue the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) for compensation if the department drains excess water into their rice fields before Sept. 15, flooding their unharvested crops.

Pradab Kongpramoon, a farmer in Ban Krathum in Sena district, said that there are more than 22,400 hectares of rice fields, with only some having been harvested. Of his own 8 hectares, he said his rice plants are about 90-days old and can be harvested in the next 30 days, adding that water from a nearby canal is already flooding his field. Continued …

Thousands of Blackchin tilapia wash up on Phetchaburi beach

Fishermen in Bang Kaeo subdistrict of Phetchaburi province have each reaped a harvest of over 100kg of Blackchin tilapia fish, which washed ashore on Bang Kaeo Beach this morning. Fishermen told the media that they had never seen so many Blackchin tilapia being washed ashore, although they had seen them at sea.

The fishermen kept only the large fish, to be used as food for crabs, and ignored the smaller ones, which were left to die on the beach. Continued …

Thai Police Raid Chinese Factories: Hazardous Chemicals Found Again

Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division police raided illegal aluminum dross-smelting factories, seizing over 10,000 tons of contraband. They identified it as hazardous to living organisms. The owners are Chinese nationals.

On Sunday, police from the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division, armed with a court warrant, searched Phoem Phoon Sap factory in Phrong Madua, Mueang Nakhon Pathom, and Tai Bao Aluminum factory in Bang Kachao, Mueang Samut Sakhon. Continued …

Thailand launches price cuts to boost economy before digital wallet

The Ministry of Commerce, in collaboration with 150 manufacturers, retailers, and government agencies, is launching a nationwide price reduction event to alleviate living costs and stimulate the economy before the digital wallet launch.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced that the Ministry of Commerce invited government agencies, consumer goods manufacturers, wholesale and retail chains, the Thai Retailers Assn., and other trade organizations to participate in the government’s economic recovery initiative. Chinese e-commerce platform Temu is not registered to pay taxes

Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat has instructed the Revenue Department to reach out to the Chinese e-commerce platform Temu, which recently entered the Thai market, to encourage it to register for the tax system.

Thailand targets 1 trillion baht milestone for crop revenue

The Commerce Ministry has urged Thai conglomerates and government bodies to collaborate on purchasing economic and secondary crops, targeting a revenue milestone of 1 trillion baht this year.

Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai highlighted that the agriculture sector supports approximately 27 million people, accounting for around 40% of the labor force. Cross-border trade sees positive trend

The value of Thailand’s cross-border and transit trade in the first six months of the year stood at over 912 billion baht, an increase of 3.6% on the same period last year, which the government attributed to the increased promotion of cross-border trade over the past several months.

Citing figures released by the Department of Foreign Trade, government spokesman Chai Wacharonke said that during the past six months, the country’s cross-border trade and transit trade – defined as trade with third countries that take place via Thailand’s border checkpoints – was valued at 912.28 billion baht. Big jump in Phuket’s August tourist arrivals

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was informed by the Airports of Thailand (AOT) that 20 to 30 flights are landing in Phuket every day in August, with this being over 100% increase from last year and the trend continuing during the high season.

Srettha used his vacation in Phuket to call a meeting of tourism agencies to prepare for the high season, including representatives from National Police headquarters, Region 8 Police, Phuket provincial police, tourist and marine police, plus the Navy, Provincial Gov. ‘Dementia Cafe’ opens in Hua Hin

64 Thai sex workers arrested in Malaysia

Malaysian immigration authorities have rounded up 88 foreigners, including 64 Thais, in a crackdown on sex activities at three locations in Ipoh city. The crackdown took place at a hotel and two entertainment outlets suspected of offering sex services on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Perak Immigration Department Director Meor Hexbullah Meor Abd Malik said the detainees comprised 78 women and 10 men, aged between 21 and 46. Doubts cast on central bank’s GDP forecasts

Thailand’s GDP growth is unlikely to increase in the second half of this year as anticipated by the central bank, according to the newly appointed chairman of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), the state planning agency.

Speaking after a seminar held on Thursday entitled “Surfing a Sea of Opportunities Amid Geopolitical Tides”, hosted by Kiatnakin Phatra Financial Group (KKP), Supavud Saicheua, chairman of the NESDC and an adviser to KKP, said the tightening monetary policy of the Bank of Thailand’s (BoT) Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has impacted access to loans for individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as increasing financial costs for borrowers. Consumer confidence slips again in June

Thai consumer confidence dropped for a fourth straight month in June, falling to its lowest level since October last year on concerns over a global slowdown and political uncertainty, according to a survey carried out by the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC).

Thanavath Phonvichai, president of UTCC, said the consumer confidence index dipped to 58.9 in June, from 60.5 in May. Consumers were increasingly worried about a global economic slowdown, rising energy prices, and a prolonged conflict in the Middle East. Continued …

FTI disappointed by new power plan

The state plan to reduce biomass and biogas fuels in the new power development plan (PDP) has disappointed the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), which wants the authorities to maintain or increase their proportion to make better use of agricultural waste.

Myanmar Conflict Escalates, Thai Companies Pull Out

The ongoing conflict in Myanmar between the military government and opposition forces shows no sign of abating. Fighting continues in several areas and has prompted Thai companies to pull out and divest 7 billion dollars.

In the past, Thai investors ranked third in investment promotion applications with a total value of 11.6 billion dollars, or 12.47%, in 155 approved projects. Currently, Thai investment in Myanmar ranks fifth with a value of 4.45 billion dollars, with 105 projects underway. Fire at landfill site in Hua Hin sparks health concerns

Pranburi Bar Owner Arrested for Alleged Minor Trafficking

Police have arrested a karaoke bar owner in Pranburi district for suspected minor trafficking focused on sex trade. The arrest followed a tip-off from an anti-trafficking group about probable unlawful operations in the bar, including the involvement of individuals below 18.

An undercover investigation by the Crime Suppression Division revealed the allegations to be true. This led to the arrest of the 46-year-old bar owner, Anong, who ran the establishment, on charges of trafficking minors for sexual exploitation. Continued …

Wildlife officers help baby elephant stuck in mud

Thailand wildlife officers rescued a baby elephant that was stuck in mud as they patrolled a forest for poachers last week. Rangers discovered the three-year-old animal while conducting searches at Thap Lan National Park in Prachinburi province.

They dug around the hole and laid down thin branches to create an angled pathway for the elephant to climb. The rangers were unsuccessful so returned the next day with more equipment, but the elephant had gone and adult footprints were found in the area. Cannabis Shops to Close by April 1, 2025; Thai PM Orders Drug Rescheduling

UOB slashes GDP growth to 2.4%

Singapore-based United Overseas Bank (UOB) is preparing to downgrade Thailand’s GDP growth forecast this year to 2.4% from 2.8%, though it expects the Bank of Thailand to trim interest rates twice to 2% by year-end to prop up the economy.

The Department of Trade Negotiations is pushing for free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations with trading partners to expand trade and investment opportunities, as well as strengthen the economy.

Director-general Chotima Iemsawasdikul said the agenda for the second half includes concluding Thailand-EFTA (European Free Trade Assn.) negotiations by the end of the year (a 10th round is scheduled for August in Switzerland), the third round of Thailand-EU FTA talks in June in Belgium, and discussing an FTA with South Korea in the middle of this year, with talks expected to conclude by the end of 2025 or early 2026. Thais undeterred by record gold prices, demand remains strong

Despite record-high prices, Thailand’s gold demand remains strong, with bar and coin investment showing robust growth in contrast to declining demand for gold jewelry, according to the World Gold Council (WGC) first-quarter Gold Demand Trends Report.

Bus driver dies, 29 passengers hurt in Lampang tour bus crash

A bus driver died and 29 passengers, both Thai and international, were injured- with two sustaining serious injuries- following a bus crash on Tuesday night. The tour bus was en route from Chiang Mai to Bangkok when it lost control, veered off the road and hit a tree.

The incident took place on Phahonyothin Road, Ban Mae Tia, in the Thoen district of Lampang province. The driver was entrapped in the steering wheel and was declared dead at the scene despite emergency workers’ efforts to free him using hand tools. Continued … 

Passengers Clash on Kuwait Airways Flight from Bangkok

A Kuwait Airways flight from Bangkok to Kuwait was forced to return after a violent confrontation erupted among a group of female passengers from Kuwait. The situation intensified to such an extent that even the plane’s security officer was assaulted.

Pattaya officials provide free water to drought-hit Koh Larn island

Residents of Koh Larn breathed a sigh of relief as the governor of Chon Buri, and city officials made their way to the island on May 7, bearing the gift of water. Air quality in most of the country to improve for a week

Bangkok and 37 other provinces are still facing high levels of PM2.5 airborne pollution, but the situation is expected to improve tomorrow through next Saturday, the Pollution Control Department reported yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) reports that, during the first two weeks of this month, 113 people visited the city’s eight air pollution clinics seeking treatment for pollution-related symptoms, compared to 100 during the same period last year. Continued …

Thailand braces for intense heat with temperatures soaring

Thailand is bracing for a severe heatwave, with weather maps turning a deep red, verging on black, indicating extreme temperatures are on the way. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) forecasts this year to be hotter by approximately 1.2 degrees Celsius compared to the previous year.

Some areas may experience highs of up to 44.5 degrees Celsius. The five provinces expected to be hardest hit are Mae Hong Son, Uttaradit, Sukhothai, Tak, and Udon Thani. Continued …

Dengue fever cases in Thailand on the rise

Dengue fever is on the rise, with a total of 13,126 cases, including 12 fatalities, being reported so far this year. This is a 2.2-fold increase over the same period last year, according to Dr. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, director-general of the Disease Control Department.

Of this year’s cases, 3,776 were children aged from 5 to 14, followed by 3,072 in the 15 to 24 age group, and 2,350 cases in the 25 to 34 age group. Most of the fatalities were people over 65 years old. Continued …

Petrol stations’ fuel dispensers’ accuracy standards to tighten

The Internal Trade Department of the Commerce Ministry is set to tighten the accuracy standards for fuel dispensers at petrol stations. Thailand battles highest bile duct cancer rate in Southeast Asia

Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has revealed that Thailand has the highest rate of cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) among the ASEAN nations. The minister announced this worrying statistic at an event commemorating World CCA Day in Maha Sarakham. The primary cause of this cancer is identified as liver fluke.

Thailand, being the Southeast Asia nation with the highest prevalence of CCA, is focusing on efforts to eliminate and treat existing CCA cases across 30 high-risk provinces. What is a liver fluke?

A liver fluke is a parasitic worm. You can become infected after eating contaminated raw or under-cooked freshwater fish or watercress. Infections are usually treated with a drug called triclabendazole. After liver flukes have been ingested, they travel from your intestines to your bile ducts in your liver, where they then live and grow.

Bangkok’s Mo Chit 2 bus terminal closes arrival area

Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), or Mo Chit 2 as it is commonly referred to, has announced the closure of its arrival area from March 1. The decision is part of a broader initiative to enhance passenger safety and curb the activities of illegal motorcycle taxis targeting travelers.

The government and the Transport Ministry had previously instructed Transport Co,, the operator of the terminal, to upgrade Mo Chit 2’s services before the Songkran holidays in April. As part of the response, the terminal’s arrival zone was shut between 8pm and 4am earlier this month. Continued …

Joint Thai-US operation to salvage sunken HTMS Sukhothai begins

A joint operation to salvage HTMS Sukhothai, which tragically sank approximately 35 kilometers off the coast of Prachuap Khiri Khan on Dec. 18, 2022, will kick off this Thursday, as announced by the Thai and U.S. navies. The vessel was victim to a fierce storm that led to its sinking.

Rear Admiral Veerudom Muangjin revealed Saturday that the operation will involve 40 Thai naval officers stationed on HTMS Rattnakosin, alongside two mine-sweeping boats and a medium-seagoing watercraft. Average IQ level of Thais is ranked 5th in ASEAN and 64th globally

According to the World of Statistics, the Japanese have the highest IQ in the world, ranking first with a score of 106.48. Thailand is ranked 64th globally and, in the ASEAN region, it comes in fifth place behind Singapore, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

The information from the World of Statistics cites research on IQ in 2009 by Richard Lynn and David Becker. Taiwan comes close to Japan with a ranking of 106.48 followed by Singapore with an average IQ of 105.89. Continued …

Cooler weather for much of Thailand, rain for the South

The north, the central region including the Bangkok metropolitan area, the east and the upper south of Thailand will experience a temperature drop of 1-2 degrees Celsius today, the Thai Meteorological Department said.

The colder weather is a result of a strong high-pressure system covering Thailand and the South China Sea, the department said, adding that the westerly trough from Myanmar will also move through the north and the upper central regions today, bringing strong winds and isolated rains to the upper part of the country. Pita returns as MP as charter court rules iTV not media since 2007

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday reinstated Pita Limjaroenrat as Move Forward Party MP after it ruled that iTV Plc had not been a media firm since March 7, 2007.

The office of the Constitutional Court announced that the majority of judges had dismissed the request of the Election Commission to disqualify Pita as an MP under Article 101 of the Constitution for holding shares in a media firm. Eight of the nine judges voted in favor of Pita. Only one judge, Nakarin Mektrairat, voted against Pita. Continued …

Two baby leopard cats rescued in Phichit province

Two tiny leopard cats left by their mother in a sugarcane plot in Phichit’s Sam Ngam district were recently rescued by officials from Protected Areas Regional Office 12 (Nakhon Sawan). The female kittens, which are about a month old, are healthy, have no injuries, and are able to drink milk suited to their species. These kittens will be moved to Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Breeding Station in Uthai Thani when they are five months old to learn survival skills in the wild before being released. (The Nation)

Thailand’s GDP growth disappoints with a slow 1.8% rise in 2023

GDP growth in 2023 slowed to a disappointing 1.8%, according to an announcement by the Fiscal Policy Office (FPO). Director-general Pornchai Thiraveja attributed this to a combination of negative factors impacting the economy. Originally, the growth was forecast to rise to 2.7% in 2023, based on a projection made in October last year.

The less-than-anticipated growth is due to a downturn in exports and the manufacturing sector. Airport chaos as biometric system fails

Long queues formed at Suvarnabhumi airport on Wednesday morning after the biometric blacklist system used by the Immigration Bureau broke down.

Police Major Gen, Choengron Rimpadee said the problem began at 4.30am, when the biometric blacklist system malfunctioned. This meant a process that normally took 45 seconds took more than one minute. 15 people on fishing trip rescued from capsized boat off Koh Kut

Fifteen passengers and crew from a boat engaged in a fishing trip, about 16 miles from Koh Kut in the Gulf of Thailand, were safely rescued after their vessel capsized and sank today.

10 days of rainfall predicted in Thailand, with lower temperatures

The Thailand Meteorological Department (TMD) predicted rainfall for the next 10 days, from Jan. 22-31. The TMD anticipates thunderstorms in the northern, central and upper northeastern regions, with a temperature rise expected.

From Jan. 22-26, a moderate to strong mass of cold air will spread over the northeast and the South China Sea, which will result in a southerly wind and a southeasterly wind bringing moisture from the Gulf of Thailand. This will cover the lower central region, the eastern region, Bangkok and its vicinity, and the upper southern region. The weather forecast for the next seven days, from Jan. 23-27, suggests that Thailand will experience thunderstorms and a temperature decrease of 1-4 degrees Celsius. Continued …

COVID-19 hospital admissions increase 12.9% during the past week

COVID-19 infections in Thailand are on the rise, with 718 patients being admitted to hospitals between Jan. 14-20. Of these, 11 have died, compared to four a week earlier, according to the Department of Disease Control.

An average of 102 admissions were reported each day during the past week, an increase of 12.9%. Of the 718 admissions, 209 were suffering from serious lung infections and 149 required ventilators. Continued …

Shen Xinghua, chairman of Changan Auto Sales (Thailand), said the Thai government has set a target for 30% of all vehicles produced in Thailand to be EVs by 2030, according to the three-phase national development plan. Thailand ranks 13th among world food exporters, accounting for 2.3% of the global food market, valued at approximately 1.1 billion baht. However, according to the GermanWatch Global Climate Risk Index 2021, Thailand ranks ninth out of 180 countries for long-term climate risk.

Climate risk affects Thailand in several aspects, especially in tourism and agriculture. Last year, El Niño resulted in droughts, impacting agricultural production in Thailand. Price of electricity from January-April to rise

The Energy Regulatory Commission of Thailand has set new electricity charges, ranging from 4.68 baht to 5.95 baht/unit from January until April, 2024. The price from September until December this year has been 3.99 baht/unit.

The commission approved an 89.55 satang/unit fuel tariff (FT) for the January-April period, which will raise the price of electricity to an average of 69.07 satang/unit. When adding in the power base rate of 3.78 baht/unit, the new price of electricity will average 4.68 baht/unit, excluding VAT. Continued …

Fire at a Hua Hin university causes Bt3M in damage

A fire ripped through a building of a university in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Hua Hin district yesterday afternoon, destroying computers and other property.

Education Ministry assigned to take urgent steps to improve Thais’ English proficiency

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has ordered the Education Ministry to come up with measures rapidly to improve English proficiency among Thai people, students in particular, after Thailand’s very poor ranking on the global Education First (EF) English Proficiency Index 2023.

EF ranks 113 countries, where English is not the first language, based on scores in 2.2 million Education First standardized English tests taken in 2022. At the top of the list is the Netherlands, with an average score of 647 out of 800, followed by Singapore (631), while Denmark, scoring 615, and Norway, with 614, swapped places at fourth and fifth place. Finnish authorities have wrapped up an investigation into a human trafficking and bribery scandal. The case involves Thai berry pickers who worked in Finland from 2020 to 2022.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) suspects five individuals linked to berry companies for aggravated human trafficking. More than 500 carcasses, including leopard carcasses, black panther carcasses, clouded leopard carcasses, and Asian golden cat carcasses, were found and seized at a house in Ban Chang subdistrict, Mueang District, Pathum Thani Province, yesterday.

GDP Forecast To Rise 3.8%, Partly Due To Digital Wallet Campaign

Thailand’s gross domestic product (GDP) is forecast to rise 3.8% next year, partly due to the Pheu Thai-initiated digital wallet campaign, the Bank of Thailand’s Assistant Gov. Piti Disyatat said Wednesday.

Thai GDP growth forecast sees downward revision as tourism revenue below estimates

The Ministry of Finance has revised down Thailand’s economic growth projection this year to 3.5%, down 0.1 percentage point from the previous estimate of 3.6%.

The downward adjustment is due to assumptions of reduced per capita spending by tourists per trip, although the number of tourists is still expected to be around 29.5 million.
