New bus service between Hua Hin, Don Mueang Airport in Bangkok

The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport. Online ticketing and advance bookings are still in the works.

  • The bus will leave Hua Hin at 7 am and 2 pm
  • It will depart from Don Mueang at 7:30 am and 4 pm

A total of 2,021 hotspots have been detected in 17 northern and western provinces today by a Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) satellite, signaling the return of wildfires and airborne pollution in the north.

Beijing to share air pollution clean-up practices with Bangkok

Beijing will share its best practices in battling air pollution with its sister city Bangkok, according to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) recently signed by the environment authorities of these two cities.

Most of the country to experience thundershowers until Tuesday

The north, northeast, central including Bangkok, and eastern regions will experience a hot day and isolated thundershowers today, the Thai Meteorological Department said. These conditions are due to the southerly and southeasterly winds bringing moisture from the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to the upper country, the department said.

Isolated thundershowers are forecast in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, and Songkhla; minimum 21-26°C, maximum 31-35°C; waves about 1-2 meters high and above 2 meters high in thundershowers. Continued … 

Bangkok mulls ‘integrated’ bus terminal

The Ministry of Transport is considering moving the capital’s inter-provincial bus terminals to Krungthep Aphiwat Central Terminal in an effort to ensure a seamless connection for travelers with the city’s mass transport network.

The board of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) approved yesterday the draft of a new SIM card registration system and the collection of mobile users’ data through a biometric system.

Inside a Thai military camp, four Ethiopian men yesterday showed the bruises and scars on their bodies they said were sustained during their time in one of Myanmar’s most notorious scam compounds. “I got a lot of punishments,” said 19-year-old Yotor, who gave only one name and had cuts along his leg. “I received electric shocks every day.”

Thai Textile Society organizes Hua Hin trip

Thai Textile Society is holding a day trip to experience various forms of fiber art in Hua Hin, on Saturday. This old and well-established town in Prachuap Khiri Khan province has been home to the renowned Khomapastr factory, one of Thailand’s first textile printing houses, established in 1948 by His Royal Highness Prince Bovoradej and his wife Her Serene Highness Pajongchitr Kridakorn.

Participants will learn how the prince developed a passion for weaving and dying textiles while living in Saigon in the 1930s. He returned to Thailand following World War II and built with his wife a small weaving, dying and printing workshop in the sleepy resort town of Hua Hin that continues production to this day. High blood pressure was the top medical condition among universal healthcare service outpatients in 2023, according to Thailand’s National Health Security Office (NHSO).

A deadly weapon, an M16 rifle, used in the fatal shooting of former police officer has been linked to over 25 deaths in a series of violent incidents in southern Thailand.

The event unfolded when Phu-at Rasaming, the imam of Baan Nam Yen and a former police officer, was fatally shot in front of his residence in Yala province on Oct. 29. Investigations revealed that the M16 rifle and 15 spent .223 (5.56 mm) cartridges found at the scene had previously been used in numerous violent incidents, causing over 25 fatalities and many injuries since 2007. Poor’s income rises 36 baht per month in 2023

The overall monthly income of the poor rose by only 36 baht in 2023 from the previous year, while the cost of living kept rising, the Office of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) found in a recent study.

The NESDC Office announced that its study found that poor families earned an average monthly income of 11,123 baht in 2023, compared with 11,087 baht in 2022. This included non-monetary income, such freedom from home-rental expenses and the cost of food and drink. Housing prices far higher than what most Bangkokians can afford

More than half of Bangkokians find it difficult to purchase a house, as their monthly salary is less than 30,000 baht, while property prices have continued to rise, according to property developer Sena Development.

The company’s managing director, Kessara Thanyalakpark, said that rising household debt was among factors that hurt Bangkokians’ ability to purchase houses. “Currently, there is a disconnect between the demand for housing and the high prices set by property developers,” she said. Continued …

Thai exports recover in first nine months of 2024

Thailand’s exports in 2024 have shown a satisfactory recovery. For the first nine months of the year, total export value reached US$223.176 billion, marking 3.9% growth. Excluding oil, gold, and military-related products, exports grew by 4.2%.

The Ministry of Commerce expects overall export growth of about 2% for the year, with the total export value projected to reach $290 billion. However, imports have remained high. In the first nine months, Thailand’s imports amounted to $229.1328 billion, a 5.5% increase, resulting in a trade deficit of $5.9568 billion, or nearly 200 billion baht. Continued …

Cutting policy rate the right move: Thai private sector

The Thai private sector says the Bank of Thailand (BOT)’s cutting of the policy rate by 25 basis points, from 2.50% to 2.25% per annum, is well suited to the country’s current economic situation and will help several sectors, notably exports and tourism.

In a bid to help reduce the public’s debt burden, the central bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 5:2 on Wednesday to lower the key policy rate with immediate effect after over a year of holding the rate at 2.50%. Continued …

Thai growth upgraded as cash handout improves outlook

Analysts have upgraded Thailand’s GDP forecast for this year and next to 2.8% and 3%, respectively, thanks to the government’s cash handout lifting the economy, but warned of an “economic cliff” in 2026 if no new growth engine is introduced.

Kiatnakin Phatra Research (KKP) and BofA Global Research both increased their Thai GDP outlooks for 2024 from 2.6% to 2.8%, with the forecasts for next year rising from 2.8% to 3.0%. They noted the government’s 10,000-baht cash handouts will temporarily help the Thai economy. Continued …

The Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) continued to decline to 87.1 points in September, in part because of the impact of severe flooding and slow economic growth. The index, which gauges business confidence among manufacturers, stood at 87.7 points in August, down from 89.3 points in July.

The Board of Investment said that many foreign printed circuit board (PCB) manufacturers have been seeking special privileges for their investments worth 162 billion baht over the past year. BOI Secretary-general Narit Therdsteerasukdi said on Wednesday that most of these circuit board manufacturers were from China or Taiwan, and they have applied for BOI privileges in 95 projects.

FedEx Expands Electric Vehicle Fleet in Thailand

Federal Express Corp., one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, has advanced toward its vehicle electrification goals by introducing four new zero-tailpipe emissions electric vehicles (EVs) to its fleet in Thailand. The expansion builds on the success of its initial launch of EVs in 2022 as part of the company’s efforts to transition to an all-electric parcel pickup and delivery (PUD) fleet by 2040.

The new EVs will support parcel PUD operations within high-traffic areas in Bangkok and Pathum Thani such as Chaeng Watthana, Tiwanon, Lat Phrao, Ram Inthra, Ngam Wong Wan, Prasert Manukit, Sukhonthasawat, Thammasart, and Chiengrak. Talks with Laos focus on renewable effort

Golfing in Hua Hin

Few golf course deals can equal the one hatched on the Royal Hua Hin course in 1932. In the middle of a game, Siam’s King Prajadhipok (Rama VII) learned that a powerful alliance of bureaucrats and soldiers in Bangkok were demanding he replace his country’s 700-year old absolute monarchy with a constitutional one. The king reportedly said to his golfing partners “I told you so” and played on. And thus began Siam- Thailand’s sometimes-rocky journey toward democracy.

Golf is still the hottest game in town, with Hua Hin regularly hosting major local and Asian tournaments. It all began when Thailand’s first golf course, Royal Hua Hin, opened here in the 1920s (legend has it that the caddies first had to chase tigers off the fairways). Black panthers filmed at Kaeng Krachan National Park

Two black panthers were spotted by tourists at Kaeng Krachan National Park in Phetchaburi province, calmly walking along the road to Panoen Thung without showing signs of fear toward vehicles. Mongkol Chaiphakdee, head of Kaeng Krachan National Park, confirmed that a tourist named Amy captured the rare sighting near Kilometer 20 on the way to Panoen Thung.

Amy managed to photograph two black panthers strolling in the area. The big cats did not display any panic or distress at the sight of cars before they eventually retreated into the forest. US dollar surge hits Asian currencies: Thai baht suffers

Asian currencies experienced a dip today, with the Thai baht and Indonesian rupiah bearing the brunt of the losses. This was mainly due to the rising strength of the U.S. dollar, bolstered by robust economic indicators and the threat of inflation from the Federal Reserve, which have pushed U.S. bond yields to a 16-year peak.

More than a ton of endangered pangolin scales seized in Thailand

Thai authorities said Thursday they have seized more than a ton of pangolin scales worth over 50 million baht ($1.4 million) that are believed to have been headed out of the country through a land border.

The scales that cover a type of anteater were found Wednesday night in the northeastern province of Kalasin, and apparently were meant to be transported out through Mukdahan province, which shares a border with Laos, Thai police said at a news conference in Bangkok on Thursday. Continued …

Economy likely grew 3.1% in Q2 on higher tourist arrivals

Thailand’s economy likely grew 3.1% in the April-June quarter from a year ago, up from 2.7% in the previous quarter, driven by increased foreign tourist arrivals, according to the median forecast of 21 economists polled.

Foreign investments bolster Thai economy with 58.9-billion-baht boost

From January through July of this year, Thailand saw 377 foreign business people invest 58.95 billion baht in the kingdom, an increase of 17% in the number of investors but a drop of 20% in the value of foreign direct investment (FDI), a senior official said.

Estimates suggest that the Japanese investors led the pack with a total outlay of 19.9 billion baht. They were closely tailed by Singaporean enterprises who injected 12.9 billion baht into the Thai business sector.
