Thailand and Cambodia clash leaves 33 dead, displacing 150,000

Thailand and Cambodia exchanged heavy artillery fire for a third consecutive day Saturday, resulting in at least 33 fatalities and displacing over 150,000 people along the contested border. Fighting erupted for the first time in Trat’s coastal region, where the countries’ boundaries meet on the Gulf of Thailand, about 250 kilometers southwest of the main conflict zone.

Journalists in Samraong, Cambodia, near the primary battle area, reported hearing artillery fire. Similarly, a Thai villager taking refuge in a bunker in Sisaket province, approximately 10 kilometers from the border, noted the sound of artillery and expressed hope for a swift resolution to the conflict. British Foreign Office warns against ‘all but essential travel’ warning to parts of Thailand

Major new travel warning issued for Aussies

Australian travelers have been warned to exercise a “high degree of caution” in Thailand “due to security and safety risks” amid an escalating border conflict with Cambodia that has left at least 33 people dead.

Thailand F-16 jet bombs Cambodian targets as border clash escalates

A Thai F-16 fighter jet bombed targets in Cambodia, both sides said, as weeks of tension over a border dispute escalated into clashes yesterday that have killed at least 12 people, including 11 civilians.

Of the six F-16 fighter jets that Thailand readied to deploy along the disputed border, one of the aircraft fired into Cambodia and destroyed a military target, the Thai army said. Both countries accused each other of starting the clash early yesterday. Continued … 

12 Killed in Cambodian Artillery Strikes on Civilian Areas

Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin confirmed yesterday that 12 people, 11 civilians and one Thai soldier, were killed in artillery shelling launched by Cambodian forces, in what officials have condemned as a blatant attack on civilian areas.

New Driving License Rule Causes Concern Among Expats

Flooded Chiang Rai farm sparks dramatic pig rescue

A frantic mission is underway in Chiang Rai, where rising floodwaters have forced officials to evacuate more than 1,000 pigs from a waterlogged farm — one tiny boatload at a time.

With land access cut off, rescuers are relying on small boats to ferry the animals to dry ground. Tourism confidence dives

The tourism confidence index in the second quarter plunged year-on-year, as tourism contracted since the beginning of the year due to safety concerns and cautious tourism spending following the U.S.’s decision to implement a reciprocal tariff policy, according to the Tourism Council of Thailand (TCT).

Thai hotels face crisis as Chinese tourists drop by 42%

The Thai hotel industry is facing a significant drop in tourist numbers. Chinese tourists alone decreased by 42% in June. The Thai Hotels Assn. is urging the government to enhance the country’s image, enforce safety measures, and tackle overcharging of foreign tourists.

Tianprasert Chaipattaranan, President of the Thai Hotels Assn., expressed concern over the drop in foreign tourists, as reported by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports. Departing passenger service charge may go up

The Transport Ministry has told Airports of Thailand (AoT) to explore the possibility of raising the passenger service charge (PSC) for departing passengers at six major airports under its supervision. Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit said an increase of 100 baht is under consideration.

Kanchanaburi woman nabbed in Hua Hin for 2.7M-baht fake charity scam

A self-styled charity organizer has landed in hot water after allegedly conning top-tier donors out of 2.7 million baht, all under the pretense of raising money for underprivileged children and monks. Instead of helping the needy, she reportedly helped herself.

Cambodia opens fire at Thai military base

A second landmine explosion in less than a week has rocked the Thai-Cambodian border, seriously injuring one Thai soldier and wounding four others. New 1st-class bus service from Bangkok airports to Hua Hin, Pattaya

State-run Transport Co. will launch a first-class bus service from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports to Hua Hin and Pattaya on March 8.

There will be two round trips daily between Don Mueang airport and Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a distance of 216 kilometers per trip. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. Continued …

A proposed plan to elevate Thailand’s herbal industry to the international level and develop the health economy and medical services was approved on Monday at a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Prasert Chantraruangthong in his role as chairman of the National Herbal Policy Committee.

Cabinet nods for power bill subsidy for vulnerable groups

The Cabinet has approved a total budget of Bt1.9 billion to subsidize power bills for vulnerable groups during September–December 2024. For power bills in September, the Cabinet approved that the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and the Provincial Electricity Authority allocate a subtotal budget of Bt472.67 million for the subsidy.

The retroactive measure means that vulnerable individuals with power bills recorded at no higher than 300 units during the four-month period are eligible for the subsidy, equivalent to a 19.05 satang discount per unit. The special measure benefits 2.31 million people in metropolitan areas and another 16.55 million in provincial areas. – Thai PBS

Thailand second among high-risk nations under Trump’s 2.0 plans

The Innovation and Technology Information Foundation (ITIF), a U.S.-based think tank, released its “Trump Risk Index”, evaluating risks faced by 39 U.S.-allied countries and territories under Donald Trump’s presidency. The air quality index (AQI) in Hua Hin, Bangkok, its adjacent provinces and some northern provinces has reportedly improved following the first day of rainmaking flights by the Department of Royal Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation (DRRAA).

Baby elephants’ trunks caught in snares, rescue underway

Authorities from the Department of Conservation Area 2 (Sriracha) mobilized a team of veterinarians and wildlife officers to rescue two injured baby elephants trapped in snares. Concerns have been raised over the potential danger posed by the protective elephant herd during the operation.

The injured elephants were first spotted on Sunday in the forest around Kaeng Hang Maew, Kaeng Hang Maew District, Chanthaburi. 40% of fathers smoke, survey shows

Almost four in 10 fathers in Thailand smoke cigarettes, which mostly has a negative influence on their children, especially as more young people are now vaping while the average age of people who vape drops each year, according to new survey findings.

The survey, conducted recently on 1,159 fathers and other male relatives who have a key role in raising a child from birth until six years of age, found that 39.8% of respondents are smokers. Most (77.22%) smoke cigarettes, 12.36% vape and the rest both smoke both, he said. Continued …

The Cabinet on Tuesday earmarked 38.58 billion baht to cover subsidies for 4.68 million rice-farming households nationwide this year, Agriculture Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat said. She said the funds would be spent on providing a 1,000 baht per rai subsidy, capped at 10 rai per family.

Cabinet to consider carbon tax next week

The Finance Ministry is set to propose a carbon tax for cabinet approval on Dec. 11. Speaking at the Sustainability Forum 2025 seminar on Tuesday, Kulaya Tantitemit, director-general of the Excise Department, said the implementation of the carbon tax would not affect operators or consumers of oil and petroleum products because the overall tax burden on oil and petroleum products will remain the same.

Authorities are pursuing legal action against unidentified individuals in a black car who fired four gunshots at wild elephants in Kaeng Krachan National Park, Prachuap Khiri Khan. The perpetrators face six serious charges under wildlife, firearm, and national park laws.

Mongkol Chaiphakdee, chief of Kaeng Krachan National Park, revealed that on Nov. 29, at around 7 pm, a concerned citizen reported the incident, seen via a TikTok video. Flooding driven by heavy rains in southern Thailand has killed nine people and displaced more than 13,000, officials said Saturday, as rescue teams using boats and jet skis worked to reach stranded residents. Stimulus to lift GDP by 0.3 percentage points

In fiscal 2024, the Thai Business Development Department identified 26,019 businesses across four key sectors — tourism and related services, real estate and land trading, hotels and resorts, and logistics and transportation — that potentially involve Thai nationals acting as nominees for foreign shareholders.
