Thousands attend Hua Hin Food Festival

The Hua Hin Food Festival 2025 drew thousands of visitors over the weekend, marking the town’s largest culinary event to date and coinciding with the 88th anniversary of Hua Hin Municipality.

Held at Hua Don Beach in Khao Takiab, the three-night festival featured over 100 food booths, live music, hot air balloon rides, and nightly fireworks. Visitors enjoyed dishes from local eateries alongside signature plates prepared by chefs from some of Hua Hin’s five-star hotels. Continued …

PKK debuts emergency warning system to warn of impeding storms

Residents across Prachuap Khiri Khan, including Hua Hin, were alerted yesterday to a storm warning, as tropical storm Kajiki strengthened, bringing the risk of flash floods, runoff, and landslides. The warning marked the first use of the province’s new emergency alert system.

The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) said widespread heavy rain was expected as the southwest monsoon intensified over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, while a monsoon trough extended across the north and upper northeast into a low-pressure system over central Vietnam. Cha-am motorway plans being expedited

The Transport Ministry is expediting plans for the Nakhon Pathom–Cha-am motorway in a bid to ease congestion along Rama II Road and improve connectivity between Bangkok and the southern provinces.

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said the detailed study for Motorway No. 8 (M8) has been completed and the proposal will soon be submitted to the Cabinet for approval. The 109-kilometer route, which will pass through Ratchaburi and Samut Songkhram, is designed to provide a faster and more efficient alternative for travel between Bangkok, Cha-am and Hua Hin. Refusing Breathalyzer Test Now Equals Drunk Driving, Say Police

Thai authorities have declared that drivers who refuse a breathalyser test will be treated as if they were driving under the influence. Most of us who come from “Western” countries, come from countries with varying immigration/visa policies/programmes (permanent migration (families, spouses, etc.) and temporary migration (student, tourist, work, etc.)). These policies/programmes change from time to time – they certainly have in Australia over the past 70-odd years of my life. One should expect changes in any country’s immigration/visa policies/programmes over time; Thailand is no different. The world is changing, and changing very quickly, and we must prepare and plan as best as possible for change. Thailand may require all citizens, foreign residents to file tax returns in 2027

Thailand is preparing to launch one of the most comprehensive tax overhauls in its modern history. Despite political instability, a border crisis with Cambodia, and fallout from the new US tariff regime, the Pheu Thai-led government is pressing ahead with reforms aimed at reshaping the country’s economic foundations.

At the center of the plan is a mandatory filing system requiring all adult citizens and businesses to submit annual tax returns by 2027. Foreign residents will also be included. Following the recent certification of Phitsanulok and Krabi airports, the Department of Airports (DOA) confirmed that Hua Hin Airport is now in Phase 4 of the five-step certification process. NESDC revises 2025 GDP growth to 2%, Q2 expands 2.8%

In the past 10 years, labor productivity in the construction sector has not been able to increase much, with a growth rate of 2.7% CAGR, which is still lower than other service sectors such as hotel activities and food services. Thai banking, health insurance issues leading to DTV’s increasing popularity

The crackdown on tourists vainly trying to open Thai bank accounts has resulted in a surge of applications for the Destination Thailand Visa. That’s according to visa officers in Thai embassies, especially in nearby countries such as Laos and the Philippines.

Although no regular government figures are published, over 120,000 DTVs have been issued by about 70 Thai diplomatic posts abroad in the first year of operation. A key attraction of DTV is that applicants do not need a Thai bank account to show the liquid asset bond of 500,000 baht (US$ 16,000) since financial institutions abroad are acceptable depositaries. The Vietnamese government will allow nationals from Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland to enter Vietnam without a visa for tourism purposes, effective o Aug. 14, 2028. EV sale soar to 18% share as Thai car market edges up

Thailand’s automotive market in 2025 continues to show only a slight decline compared with 2024, but the outlook is improving, with annual sales expected to reach around 600,000 units, up from 570,000 last year.

The electric vehicle (EV) sector, however, is expanding prominently. In the first seven months of 2025, EV registrations reached 66,000 units, almost equaling the full-year total of 67,000 units in 2024. The first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin offers two round trips daily. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer two round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. Huay Mongkol Temple Mother’s Day draping draws crowd

Crowds gathered at Wat Huay Mongkol Saturday evening to take part in the 12th annual draping ceremony of the giant Luang Pu Thuat statue, held to mark Mother’s Day and honor Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother’s 93rd birthday.

More than 1,000 Thai and foreign visitors joined the ceremony, carrying a saffron-yellow cloth measuring 3 meters wide and 247 meters long in a clockwise procession before draping it over the statue, which bears the royal cypher “Sor Kor.” Continued …

The State Railway of Thailand has resumed its normal south-bound train services after removing three derailed carriages and repairing damaged tracks in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Departure service fees to increase at six airports

Thailand’s Grim Motorcycle Death Toll Sparks Helmet Campaign

Thailand’s Department of Disease Control (DDC) has called on all motorcyclists to wear helmets, following a devastating year of road casualties. Over 14,000 people lost their lives in motorcycle accidents across the country in 2024 alone.

(Editor: While wearing helmets when riding a motorcycle is a good idea, the headgear typically used is not the answer to significantly reducing road deaths in Thailand. First, the types of helmets usually used are cheap and break easily, affording very little in the way of safety. The cost of helmets that can actually provide protection is probably more than most Thais can afford. And second, what is needed is driver education programs – required before getting a license. The problems on the roads are reckless and careless driving, not headgear.)

Statistics from three government agencies paint a worrying picture of road safety. From 2020 to 2024, an average of 17,428 people died annually in road traffic incidents, with motorcycles involved in 80% of these fatalities. The figures for 2024 were particularly dire, with 17,447 road deaths recorded, of which 14,144 were linked to motorcycle accidents. On average, this means three people died every two hours. 6 police officers honored after Hua Hin aircraft crash

Following a tragic small aircraft accident involving a police air unit, six police officers’ bodies have been transported from Hua Hin Hospital to the Police General Hospital’s forensic institute.

The accident, which occurred near Bo Fai Airport in Hua Hin district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, resulted in the deaths of five officers and critically injured one, who later succumbed to injuries. Continued …

Deaths from sandfly bites prompt alert in Thailand

Thai health authorities have issued a warning following two deaths from leishmaniasis this year, urging the public to take precautions against bites from sandflies, the disease’s primary vector.

Leishmaniasis is relatively rare in Thailand, with only 40 cases recorded since 1996. Since the beginning of this year, two fatalities have been reported — one in Songkhla and another in Bangkok, said Dr. Jurai Wongsawat, spokesperson for the Department of Disease Control. Continued …

Thai Woman Survives King Cobra Attack, Brings Snake to Hospital

A 47-year-old woman from Sa Kaeo Province has been discharged from the hospital after surviving a King Cobra attack, during which she fought the snake and brought its carcass to doctors to aid in her treatment.

She was gathering mushrooms near the Khlong Khan Tho reservoir in Watthana Nakhon district with several relatives when a 3-meter King Cobra lunged at her, biting her left leg and causing a severe wound. IMF advises ASEAN to boost regional trade amid Trump tariff threats

Songkran road toll 171, mainly from speeding and drink-driving

Traffic accidents killed 171 people and injured 1,208 others during the first five days of the Songkran holiday, as of Tuesday night. Officials reported yesterday that from April 11-15 there were 1,216 reported traffic accidents nationwide in which 171 people were killed and 1,208 others were injured.

The southern province of Phatthalung reported the highest number of accidents, 44, Bangkok the most traffic accident fatalities, 15, and the northern province of Lampang the most road injuries, 47. Continued …

Twelve mild earthquakes were recorded in Myanmar and northern Thailand today, with magnitudes ranging from 1.6 to 3.5, according to the Thai Meteorological Department. The Earthquake Observation Division of the department stated that two of these earthquakes occurred in Thailand.

Malaysia firm wins chilled water plant project for Hua Hin’s Centara

KJTS Group Bhd’s subsidiary in Thailand, KJTN Engineering Co., has been appointed the contractor by Central Hua Hin Beach Resort Co. for the chilled water plant improvement project at the five-star Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin.

KJTS said the contract came under a finance, retrofit, operation, , and transfer (ROT) scheme for a duration of 20 years. Under the deal, KJTN Engineering shall finance the retrofit works amounting to Bt194.98mil for Phase 1, and Bt15.52mil for Phase 2. Continued …

Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son districts were rocked by 16 minor tremors this morning. These little shakes, measuring 1.9 to 3.8 on the Richter scale, were most prominent in Wiang Haeng, Chiang Mai, and Pai, Mae Hong Son. Though many went unnoticed, a few larger ones made their presence felt among residents.

The Earthquake Observation Division reported that the tremors began early, from 4:22 am, and continued sporadically until 10:57 am. How Often Do Thais Use E-hailing In A Week

E-hailing services are becoming increasingly popular among Thais, with more people relying on them for daily commutes and errands. As urban mobility evolves, Maxim’s analytics team examined user habits in 2024, revealing key insights into ride frequency, preferred services, and spending patterns.

According to the data, 49% of active users book rides twice a week, while 39% use the service once a week. Meanwhile, 10% book between three to six rides weekly, and a small but dedicated 1% use Maxim more than seven times a week. Most rides originate from public spaces, transportation hubs, and workplaces, heading toward residential areas. Regular users often commute across various parts of the city.

Among service options, the car service is used for 53% of rides, making it the most popular. Motorbikes make up 41% of trips because their speed and flexibility make them suited for short journeys in cities. While the remaining 5% consists of other services.

According to the data, 59% spend up to Bt50 per week, 36% spend up to Bt250, and only 13% exceed that amount. On average, users spend approximately Bt108 per week.

Thai economy improved in January, says central bank

Thailand’s economy in January improved from the previous month, driven by tourism and consumption, the central bank reported yesterday. New 1st-class bus service from Bangkok airports to Hua Hin, Pattaya

State-run Transport Co. will launch a first-class bus service from Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi airports to Hua Hin and Pattaya on March 8.

There will be two round trips daily between Don Mueang airport and Hua Hin district in Prachuap Khiri Khan, a distance of 216 kilometers per trip. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. Continued …
