Tigers killed by canine distemper virus, not bird flu

Canine distemper caused the deaths of 72 tigers at two animal parks in Chiang Mai earlier this month, not avian influenza, and there was no transmission to humans, it was announced yesterday.

Deputy Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Amin Mayusoh said laboratory tests on the tiger carcasses at the two parks, in Mae Rim and Mae Taeng, were negative for bird flu, as were the tests on the chicken carcasses they were fed. Continued …

US tariffs still at 10%, despite Trump’s 15% claim

US President Donald Trump’s new global tariffs have come into effect at 10% despite a pledge to introduce them at a higher rate. After the Supreme Court blocked many of his sweeping import taxes on Friday, the president said he would introduce a 10% global rate. He then said on Saturday that the rate would be 15%.

However, according to official documents, the tariffs have been set at the lower rate from yesterday with no directive to increase the rate issued. The White House is working to update the rate to 15% to reflect Trump’s announcement, a White House official told Reuters, without saying when the change might come into force. Continued …

Thailand’s Technical Deflation: Causes, Risks, and the Economic Outlook

The statistics of the kingdom have shown for 10 months inflation results lower than the experts’ statistical forecasts (these being on average negative for the whole of 2025 with -0.13% annual average, according to Thanavath Phonvichai, president of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and chairman of the Economic and Trade Forecast Center .

Although the growth forecasts for 2026 suggest a simultaneous recovery in inflation, it appears to show no signs of slowing down, which could have adverse effects on the Thai economy. Price deflation is a general and long-lasting corollary, often indicative of a marked weakening in demand and economic activity. The Thai automotive industry has kickstarted the “Year of the Horse” with a 53.8% surge in year-on-year sales for January. According to data released yesterday by the Automotive Industry Club of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), domestic vehicle sales reached 73,936 units. CAAT rejigs screenings at all airports

Phuket 5-Star Hotel Busted for No License, Many More Suspected

A five-star hotel in Patong, Phuket, has been raided for operating without a license, despite offering 219 rooms and charging up to 8,000 baht per night. Provincial officials confirmed the hotel had no operating permit under the Hotel Act B.E. 2547 (2004), no registered legal entity and no evidence of tax registration.

Slightly cheaper power bills seen on the horizon

The price of electricity will become slightly cheaper during the last four months of the year, as authorities have agreed to decrease the power tariff by 0.03 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), says Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga.

The current power tariff, used to calculate monthly electricity bills, is 3.98 baht a unit, and is applicable until the end of August. Continued …

Public Bus Accidents in Thailand Surge by 46.5%

Thailand’s National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) has revealed a sharp 46.5% increase in accidents involving public buses in 2023. Buses accounted for the highest proportion of these incidents, with 73.0% of cases, driven by driver errors and poorly maintained, aging vehicles. Additionally, unsafe vehicle modifications have exacerbated the risk.

Public transport remains essential, particularly in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, where over 968 million trips were recorded in 2022. However, a troubling rise in fatalities and injuries was reported, with casualties from public bus accidents increasing by more than 105% compared to 2022. Continued …

Power tariff to be capped until next April

In an extension of the government’s current policy, Thailand’s energy minister plans to cap the power tariff until April next year. Energy Minister Pirapan Salirathavibhaga said on Monday that the policy was to keep the average power tariff at no more than 4.18 baht per unit.

It has been implemented for almost a year. The 4.18-baht power tariff rate set by the Energy Regulatory Commission will expire at the end of this year. Continued …

Thai politician Samart arrested over iCon Group fraud case

Police arrested politician Samart Janechaijittawanich in the northernmost province of Chiang Rai on Monday, after he was wanted for alleged money laundering in connection with The iCon Group fraud case.

Unemployment rises by 1.02% in third quarter

Thailand’s unemployment rate in the third quarter this year stood at 1.02%, increasing from 0.99% recorded for the same period in 2023, with about 410,000 Thais unemployed, a 3.2% increase year on year, the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) said in its report on Thai society’s outlook for Q3/2024.

The third quarter unemployment rate is, however, an improvement over the 1.07% recorded in the previous quarter, which was a two-year high, NESDC said. Continued …

Thailand’s household debt falls for the first time in 42 months

Thailand’s household debt dropped in the second quarter of this year to 89.6% of GDP, from 90.7% in the first quarter, which is the first fall in three and a half years, according to Danucha Pichayanan, secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), today.

Although the decrease is a healthy sign, he noted that household debt in Thailand is still higher than in other countries in the region, but added that if the rate of economic growth can be maintained, household debt is likely to improve accordingly. Continued …

Narong Yuenyonghattaporn, a retired civil servant in Bangkok, bought an electric car made by GAC Aion earlier this year. He’s part of a growing number of Thai drivers buying EVs sold by Chinese car companies but made in Thailand, a nation that’s become one of the front lines in the global battle for auto-market supremacy.

Thai October exports rise 14.6% y/y, above forecast

Thailand’s customs-cleared exports rose 14.6% in October from a year earlier, the commerce ministry said today, beating analysts’ expectations. The reading compared with a forecast 5.2% increase for October in a Reuters poll, and followed September’s 1.1% rise.

Exports totaled $27.22 billion, while imports amounted to $28.02 billion, the latter up 15.9% from a year earlier, the ministry said. Exports, a key driver of Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, were boosted by stronger shipments of technology-related products, particularly computers, equipment, and components, the ministry said. Chinese firms prep Bt90 billion in Thailand investments

Chinese entrepreneurs are expected to make new investments worth 90 billion baht as they are increasingly concerned about the impact of the incoming U.S. president’s plan to impose high tariffs on Chinese exports, says the Board of Investment (BoI).

Shoppers’ Rebates, Property Tax Cut as New Year Gifts

The cabinet approved its “2023 New Year Gifts” as proposed by the Finance Ministry and they include rebates for shoppers and reduction in property tax and transfer fees.

Deputy government spokeswoman Rachada Dhnadirek said that people who make purchases between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15, 2023, can receive personal income tax rebates worth up to 40,000 baht.

The rebate measure should have about 56 billion baht circulated in the economic system, the spokeswoman said. Continued …

Hua Hin community turns to composting its food waste

Residents of a community in Hua Hin are being encouraged to compost their food waste and cut down on disposing of it in their household trash.

If you’re unfamiliar, composting is the act of turning food scraps and other materials into a nutrient soil. It’s one of the easiest ways to help the environment.

In December, Pailin Kongpan, deputy mayor of Hua Hin city,Amorn Pattong, vice president of the Municipal Council, and Thongchai Petchsongkram, Municipal Council co-chair, formally launched the “Household Waste Management for Vegetable Fertilizer” project at an event held at Klai Kangwon Temple in Hua Hin. Elephant rescued from smugglers in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Authorities on Sunday arrested two men who were seen taking a female elephant across the Myanmar-Thai border in Huay Yang District in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

The two arrested men were identified as Phongsak Huakaew, a 28-year-old Thai national, and Muytuya, a 28-year-old Myanmar man.

Phongsak was found to be the owner of the truck used by the men. He is known to have transported timber and elephants in the past and has a criminal record. Continued … 

‘There weren’t enough life vests on board’

An air and sea search for the 30 missing crew (some media report up to 33) of the HMS Sukhothai frigate continues. One crew member was found and rescued yesterday but fears remain for the welfare of the remainder of the missing crew.

It was also revealed this morning by a spokesperson for the Navy that there weren’t sufficient life vests available for all crew on the ill-fated vessel.

There were 106 crew on board HMS Sukhothai before the incident on Sunday evening around 11.30pm; 75 of the crew were rescued on the first day after life rafts were deployed. A nearby oil tanker responded to the vessels’ SOS alerts. Continued …

The traditional roast Christmas dinner could have nearly a quarter of a million pieces of microplastic in it, according to researchers at the University of Portsmouth.

Do you know how much plastic is really in your Christmas dinner? Researchers in England tried to find out by cooking two different roast chicken dinners.

One with all the ingredients wrapped in plastic packaging and the other with no plastic packaging at all.

Tomorrow brings shortest day of year with barely 11hrs daylight

The shortest day of the year, known as winter solstice, will fall on Thursday (Dec. 22), the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (Narit) said.

The winter solstice occurs when either of the Earth’s poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the sun. This happens twice a year, once in the northern and once in the southern hemisphere.

Police raid Mae Sot factory after Tesco labor abuse allegations

Immigration police and labor officials investigated a clothing factory in Tak’s Mae Sot district on Tuesday following reports of slavery-like working conditions.

Tesco, Britain’s biggest retailer, is facing legal action from a group of Myanmar migrant workers, alleging dire working conditions at a Mae Sot factory that made clothes for the retailer’s F&F range.

A total of 146 workers, 140 Burmese and six Thai, allege they were made to work up to 99 hours per week on unlawful wages with forced labor conditions at the VK Garments (VKG) factory in Mae Sot between 2017 and 2020. Continued …

Cabinet approves operational plan for trillion-baht EEC smart city project

The Cabinet on Tuesday approved the operational plan for a 1.35-trillion-baht business hub and smart city project in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC), government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said.

Under the plan, the city will be constructed by 2027 and developed as one of the world’s top 10 smart cities by 2037, said Ratchada.

“The city will also serve as a model for development of other smart cities throughout Thailand,” she added. Continued …

Bangkok motorways toll-free over New Year holiday

Toll fees on two motorways – No 7 (Bangkok-Chonburi-Pattaya) and No 9 (Bang Pa In-Bang Phli-Bang Khun Tian) – will be waived for seven days of the New Year holidays, from Dec. 29 to Jan. 4, the Department of Highways said on Tuesday.

The move aims to minimize queues at toll booths and reduce costs for people visiting their relatives over New Year, said Director-general Sarawut Songwilai.

The department will also waive toll fees on Motorway No 6 (Bang Pa-in-Nakhon Ratchasima) between the Pak Chong and Kham Thalay Sor checkpoints, which are a gateway to northeast provinces. Continued …

Auto manufacturers likely to raise prices next year due to rising costs

The Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) on Tuesday predicted that auto manufacturers would raise the prices of vehicles next year because of rising costs.

FTI vice chairman and spokesman for the FTI’s Auto Industry Group Surapong Paisit-Pattanapong said rising labor and electricity costs would leave automakers with no choice but to raise their prices accordingly.

Surapong added, however, that the increase in auto retail prices would have no impact on the economic recovery. Continued …

4am Closing Time for Nightspots in Tourism Areas Postponed Indefinitely

The Cabinet has indefinitely postponed the proposed extension of nightlife venues’ legal closing time to 4 am from 2am, according to Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn.

He added that the Cabinet said this was not an appropriate time to do such a thing, given the current situation, without giving further details.

This not-so-shocking move came after Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul declared on Monday that his ministry was firmly opposed to the proposal. Continued …

Health minister confident COVID infections over New Year are controllable

Thailand’s Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul is confident that COVID-19 infections during the New Year celebrations will be kept under control, as the Public Health Ministry is fully equipped with manpower and medical supplies to cope with the situation.

He did, however, express concern over those who are over 60, have kidney or heart diseases or cancer, saying that it is imperative that they get vaccinated or are fully vaccinated, to reduce the risk of severe symptoms.

He said that everyone should receive at least four doses of vaccine, which will enhance their ability to avoid serious illness if they become infected, adding that he has been informed that more people have recently been turning up for inoculation. Continued …

A respiratory specialist has advised people to protect themselves against Covid-19 with currently available vaccines rather than waiting for next-generation vaccines.

Dr. Manoon Leechawengwongs of Vichaiyut Hospital explained on Tuesday that the Covid virus is mutating too quickly for next-gen vaccines to keep up.

The next-gen vaccines will target the current dominant strain in Thailand, but this will soon be replaced by new Omicron subvariants, such as BQ.1 and XBB, said Manoon. The new-gen vaccines will not be as effective against these new subvariants, he added. Continued …
