Thailand’s rice exports hit six-year high last year

Thailand exported 9.95 million tons of rice in 2024, increasing 13% from the previous year, and the highest number in six years, the Commerce Ministry reported yesterday. The value of exported rice last year also rose 27% year on year to 225.65 billion baht.

Thai rice exports seen falling over 20% this year

Thailand’s rice exports are seen falling about 24% to 7.5 million metric tons this year, the Commerce Ministry reported on Tuesday. The lower forecast was due to the resumption of exports from India and improved volumes from other rice producers, Arada Fuangtong, head of the ministry’s Foreign Trade Department, told a media conference.

ADB, Gulf ink $820-million loan for 12 renewable energy projects in Thailand

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Gulf Renewable Energy Co., a subsidiary of Gulf Energy Development Public Co., have signed an $820-million loan that will fund the construction of 12 renewable energy projects across Thailand.

ADB said the projects include eight ground-mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) plants with contracted capacity of 393 megawatts (MW) and four ground-mounted solar PV plants with battery energy storage, with contracted capacity of 256 MW and 396 MW-hours of energy storage. Continued …

Thai economic and investment landscape under Trump 2.0

The global economy in the first quarter of 2025 will be shaped by three themes, according to Dr. Piyasak Manason of the Investment Strategy Department at INVX-Research Group, at InnovestX Securities: U.S. economic resilience, China’s strategic pivot, and escalating economic tensions following Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Pattaya rescue officials from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation received a report yesterday from a concerned citizen about a body floating near Wong Amat Beach. The deceased, believed to be a foreigner, had washed ashore.

Baht set to further strengthen this year despite headwinds

The baht could appreciate further to 35.30 to the U.S. dollar in the short term, after hitting a four-month high of 35.72 early Wednesday, but political instability and deteriorating fiscal positions as a result of the government’s populist policies could limit the Thai currency’s rebound.

Thailand exported goods worth US$23.278 billion in April, a 6.8% growth year-on-year, the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO) announced Thursday.

Auto industry seeks stimulus as sales plummet

Vehicle production in April fell 11.02% year-on-year (YoY) to 104,667 units, and the auto industry is expecting measures from the government to boost demand, according to Surapong Paisitpatanapong, adviser to the president of the Automotive Industry Group.

The biggest decline in output for domestic sales was pickup trucks – down 45.94% YoY – while the manufacture of passenger cars fell by 5.03% YoY, said Surapong, who is also spokesperson for the Automotive Industry Group of the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). Continued …
