Rama II Road, often called “The Road with Never-Ending Construction”, has seen frequent accidents throughout its decades-long construction, attributed to a 50-year timeline of projects. Transport authorities are recommending detours to motorists, as the collapse of a new expressway on Saturday seriously damaged an existing Bangkok-Thon Buri expressway ramp which connects to Rama II Road, a main southbound highway, and its complete reopening will take about a month.

Thailand’s oldest human skeleton found in Sam Roi Yot National Park

A pre-historic human skeleton from the Palaeolithic period, believed to be more than 29,000 years old, was recently found in a limestone cave, about 125 meters above mean sea level, in the Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park in Sam Roi Yot district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Phanombootra Chantarachot, director-general of Fine Arts Department, and Chidchanok Sukmongkol, deputy director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, told the media that, in addition to the skeleton, several pre-historic paintings were found on the cave walls. Truck falls through damaged bridge in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Three days after warnings were issued about the condition of a bridge in Bang Saphan district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province, a truck carrying rubber wood fell through a large hole on Saturday.

Prior to the collapse, a local had posted warnings on Feb. 19 about the deteriorating state of the bridge in a Facebook group. The post alerted residents in Prachuap Khiri Khan to the risks on the elevated U-turn road on Phetkasem road, leading to the first Huakheun bridge, which had previously been rebuilt but quickly became unusable once again. Baht Poised for Dip to 35 per USD by Mid-2025

Phuket is witnessing an alarming rise in financial fraud, with over 5,500 individuals falling victim to scams in the past year, resulting in cumulative losses of 413 million baht. These figures were confirmed by the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) Region 5.

There has been a sharp increase in scam activities since 2022. Last year, while there were 1,365 reported victims, who collectively lost 10.9 million baht. The numbers jumped dramatically in 2023 to 3,538 victims with 18.8 million baht in losses. By 2024, the figures skyrocketed to 5,510 victims, with financial damages amounting to 413 million baht. The new first-class bus service between Don Mueang Airport and Hua Hin will offer two round trips daily. The fare would be 200 baht each way and would take three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure will be from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

Thailand Enforces Burning Ban to Combat PM2.5 Pollution

Thailand has instituted a nationwide burning ban to address escalating PM2.5 pollution levels, as stagnant air circulation is expected to persist until early February, potentially exacerbating the situation. New railcars on the way – but not until 2030

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has approved a 24.15-billion-baht procurement plan for 184 new air-conditioned diesel railcars, replacing aging rolling stock that has been in service for over three decades.

SRT Gov. Veeris Ammarapala confirmed that the project will replace 10 long-distance passenger trains and introduce 52 new trains, 46 for medium-range routes and six for long-distance travel. Routes for Surat Thani and Chumphon are included in the upgrade. Continued …

Fiscal office anticipates GDP growth of up to 3.5%

The Fiscal Policy Office (FPO) expects economic expansion of up to 3.5% is likely this year, rising from 2.5% last year. However, the Finance Ministry’s planning unit still projects average annual growth of 3% this year, within a range of 2.5% to 3.5%.

Power tariff faces trim of 17 satang at expense of renewable energy

The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) expects to reduce the power tariff by 0.17 baht per kilowatt-hour (unit), leading to cheaper electricity bills, if the government agrees to reduce its spending on a policy to promote investment in renewable energy.

Hua Hin Expat News yesterday listened in on an online webinar regarding the new tax on expat income to be implmented in Thailand next year. There is a great deal of confusion on this subject and the group presenting the webinar has researched how it affects expats from a number of countries.

NHSO clarifies ‘Cancer Anywhere’ program under the Universal Health Coverage funding rules

AOT confirms facial recognition for international flights

Airports of Thailand (AOT) yesterday announced that the state-owned enterprise will implement facial recognition services at six major airports for international flights starting Dec. 1.

ADB, Gulf ink $820-million loan for 12 renewable energy projects in Thailand

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Gulf Renewable Energy Co., a subsidiary of Gulf Energy Development Public Co., have signed an $820-million loan that will fund the construction of 12 renewable energy projects across Thailand.

Valeura Energy has completed a five-well infill drilling program on its Jasmine field in license B5/27 in the Gulf of Thailand. Three new wells have come onstream from the Jasmine D platform, all drilled as producers.

Thai economic and investment landscape under Trump 2.0

The global economy in the first quarter of 2025 will be shaped by three themes, according to Dr. Piyasak Manason of the Investment Strategy Department at INVX-Research Group, at InnovestX Securities: U.S. economic resilience, China’s strategic pivot, and escalating economic tensions following Donald Trump’s return to the White House.

Despite showing signs of strength, Manason says, the U.S. economy exhibits some vulnerabilities. While employment growth has slowed significantly, the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book signals a broader economic deceleration. “We expect the Fed to make four interest rate cuts in 2025, potentially bringing the federal funds rate down to 3.4% by year-end,” he says. Capital A, the parent company of AirAsia, is planning new aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities worth $100 million in Thailand, scheduled to start construction in 2025.

Tourist’s Body Found Washed Ashore at Wong Amat Beach, Pattaya

Pattaya rescue officials from Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Foundation received a report yesterday from a concerned citizen about a body floating near Wong Amat Beach. The deceased, believed to be a foreigner, had washed ashore.
