Draft regulations on cannabis, hemp products get Cabinet nod

The Cabinet meeting last week approved the draft of the Public Health Ministry’s regulation regarding application of cannabis and hemp products for private companies and the general public, paving the way for clearer rules on the use and commercialization of the former narcotics plants.

After their delisting from the Category 5 Narcotics List on Sept. 9, 2022, only extraction of cannabis and hemp with THC or tetrahydrocannabinol having concentration more than 0.2% is still regarded as a drug. Thailand says investment pledges at 10-year high

Thailand’s investment applications rose 42% in the January-September period from the same period a year earlier, led by electronic manufacturing and data center projects, the Board of Investment said today.

Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has assured the public that despite this year’s rainfall and floodwaters being on par with 2011’s catastrophic floods, a disaster of similar scale is not anticipated. Speaking yesterday, Anutin noted that although Thailand is also impacted by water released from neighboring countries, manageable measures are being undertaken to mitigate potential flooding impacts.

Chiang Mai City: Floods Expected to Surpass 2011 Levels

The flooding in Chiang Mai continues to worsen as the Ping River reaches record-breaking levels. As of 9pm last night, the water level in the city of Chiang Mai had risen to 4.83 meters, surpassing the 2022 flood level. Authorities expect the level to climb above 5.10 meters, exceeding the 2011 flood levels.

Reports from Chiang Mai indicate that the situation remains critical, as new floodwaters from Mae Taeng District have reached the city. The flooding has expanded, inundating major economic areas such as the Night Bazaar, San Pa Khoi Market, and parts of the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, with water depths ranging from 50 to 100 cm. More areas in the northern provinces of Lampang and Sukhothai are now flooded. Residents have been moving their belongings to higher ground and are avoiding flooded routes as advised.

Economic toll from flooding in Thailand estimated at Bt242 billion

The severe flooding that has gripped much of northern and northeastern Thailand is taking a heavy toll on the country’s economy, with the Thai Chamber of Commerce estimating damages at over 242 billion baht.

The flooding, exacerbated by the El Niño and La Niña weather patterns, has disrupted agriculture, fisheries, livestock, and business sectors across the affected regions. First phase of 10,000-baht disbursement started

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra presided over the handing out of 10,000-baht to the first group of recipients on Wednesday morning and pledged to hold the second and third phases soon. In a ceremony held at the Government House, Paetongtarn pressed a mock button to gesture the start of the remittance of the economic stimulus money to the first group of recipients.

Thailand fell three places from 2022 to 12th among Asia-Pacific nations in terms of ease of doing business, according to a survey by the Asia Securities Industry and Financial Markets Assn. (ASIFMA).

Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office, said exports in August increased by 7% to US$26.2 billion (940 billion baht), driven by demand for agricultural and agro-industrial products, as well as industrial products, supported by global climate fluctuations and the recovery of the service sector in key markets. Playful rain, cheerful mist at Ban E-Tong

As soon as we arrived at Ban E-Tong, a small village in Kanchanaburi province, in the late afternoon, everyone found themselves in a kingdom engulfed by mist. The familiar scenes were almost entirely swallowed up. We willingly stepped out of the car, humbly embracing the clarity of the season.

B.Grimm Power Public Co. (B.Grimm Power) has signed 25-year power purchase agreements (PPAs) with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and the Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) through its subsidiaries and joint ventures. The current global trend of social change toward an aging society is becoming more evident. According to the United Nations’ World Population 2022 report, the global population is projected to reach 8 billion, with 10% being over the age of 65. This percentage is expected to increase to 16% by 2050.

In Thailand, by 2024, the country will have fully transitioned into an aging society. Data from the Ministry of Interior shows that in 2023 Thailand had approximately 13 million people aged 60 and above, making up one-fifth of the total population of 66,057,967. This increase in the elderly population presents an opportunity for businesses catering to this demographic, particularly in the elderly-care sector or “nursing homes”, which are experiencing growth in Thailand. Rice farmers to sue if water is drained into their rice fields

Rice farmers in the Sena district of Ayutthaya province are threatening to sue the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) for compensation if the department drains excess water into their rice fields before Sept. 15, flooding their unharvested crops.

Pradab Kongpramoon, a farmer in Ban Krathum in Sena district, said that there are more than 22,400 hectares of rice fields, with only some having been harvested. Of his own 8 hectares, he said his rice plants are about 90-days old and can be harvested in the next 30 days, adding that water from a nearby canal is already flooding his field. Continued …

Thousands of Blackchin tilapia wash up on Phetchaburi beach

Fishermen in Bang Kaeo subdistrict of Phetchaburi province have each reaped a harvest of over 100kg of Blackchin tilapia fish, which washed ashore on Bang Kaeo Beach this morning. Fishermen told the media that they had never seen so many Blackchin tilapia being washed ashore, although they had seen them at sea.

The fishermen kept only the large fish, to be used as food for crabs, and ignored the smaller ones, which were left to die on the beach. Continued …

Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division police raided illegal aluminum dross-smelting factories, seizing over 10,000 tons of contraband. They identified it as hazardous to living organisms. The owners are Chinese nationals.

Flu outbreak sweeps Thailand

Thailand is grappling with a severe flu outbreak, with tens of thousands of patients reported in the past two months. The Office for Disease Control and Prevention 9 in Nakhon Ratchasima (OCP9) urges everyone to intensify precautionary measures and to continue wearing masks.

Villages in Sukhothai flooded as Yom River embankment collapses

The embankment along the Yom River in Sukhothai province has collapsed in several areas, sending water from the swollen river gushing into riverside farmland and local communities.

Tharina Botes, a 26-year-old South African-Thai woman was crowned Miss Thailand World 2023. The Miss Thailand World 2023 beauty pageant final round was held on Sunday night in Bangkok. Tharina is nicknamed “Kanom”. Her father is South African and her mother is Thai. She started her beauty pageant career at 13-years-old. In 2019, she represented Miss Grand from Phuket. Chiang Mai school cancels controversial 2,000 baht fine for exam failures

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between a teacher and students in a Chiang Mai secondary school, which required students to pay a fine of 2,000 baht per credit if they failed or scored zero in exams, has been scrapped.

Waste more, pay more: Bangkok to up garbage fees

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is to hold a public hearing to consider the new garbage collection and disposal fee this month following the expiration of the current rate on Oct. 1, Bangkok Deputy Gov. Jakkapan Phiewngam said on Monday.

The current rate, which starts at 20 baht per month for collection and another 20 baht for disposal for households with less than 20 liters of garbage per day, was originally scheduled to expire in October 2019 but was postponed in a bid to reduce people’s financial suffering. Continued …

‘Quick Win’ policy launched to lower prices of over 151,000 goods

Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai expressed confidence on Monday that the government’s “Quick Win” policy to reduce the cost of living by reducing consumer goods’ prices would create a “win-win” for both operators and consumers.

Phumtham told a press conference that 288 business operators had agreed to support the measure to reduce prices of 151,675 items of goods and services from now until the end of this year. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has asked the armed forces to delay their arms procurement plans for the 2024 fiscal year so the government can spend its budget to help those who are most in need, sources said.

The sources said on Monday that Srettha has instructed Defense Minister Sutin Klunsang and the PM’s secretary-general, Prommin Lertsuridej, to hold talks with leaders of the armed forces to ask them to defer their arms procurements for the 2024 fiscal year for the time being. Continued …

Price controls get one-year extension

The Ministry of Commerce has extended price controls on 51 products and services for another year. The extension will expire on June 30, 2024.

The list of 51 items — 46 products and five services — will be forwarded for cabinet approval, Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit said on Friday after chairing a meeting of the Central Committee on the Prices of Goods and Services. Continued …

Entire column of Myanmar military flees to Thailand following attack

According to the announcement made by the Special Operation Force (SOF), the Military Council column responsible for transporting food and ammunition to the Kwi Lon Taing base in Kyainseikgyi Township in Myanmar, specifically within the 6th Brigade area of the Karen National Union (KNU), was intercepted, and the entire column fled to Thailand.

The Military Council column, composed of approximately 50 troops, fell into an ambush by the Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) and SOF. During the attack, the Military Council troops suffered casualties, and the soldiers were forced to retreat, carrying the bodies of their fallen comrades, toward the border with Thailand, according to an SOF member. Japanese man Arrested in Sa Kaeo for Overstaying Visa by 547 Days

Yesterday, the police of Sa Kaeo province detained a Japanese man for overstaying his visa by 547 days. According to reports, Police Col. Rung Thongmon, chief of Sa Kaeo Provincial Police, led the arrest operation.

The arrested man, 60-year-old Noboru Kobayashi, a Japanese national, was apprehended in the vicinity of Muang Kaeo market, Sa Kaeo subdistrict, Muang Sa Kaeo district, Sa Kaeo province. Continued …

 

Sales of electric vehicles surge 474% in first five months of the year

More than 32,000 electric vehicles (EVs) were registered with the Ministry of Transport in the first five months of this year, compared to fewer than 2,000 in all 2021 and about 10,000 in all last year.

The surge followed an EV tax break that took effect last November to increase sales of EVs, data from the ministry shows. The 80% tax break will continue until Nov. 10, 2025. Continued …

Thailand aims to conclude free-trade agreement (FTA) talks with the European Free Trade Assn. (EFTA) by the first quarter of next year, according to the trade negotiations chief.
