People’s Party (PP) leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawt announced support for Bhumjaithai Party (BJT) leader Anutin Charnvirakul as the new prime minister this morning, but the caretaker prime minister from the ruling Pheu Thai Party countered with a move for a House dissolution.

Thailand foreign visitors drop 7.16% y/y in first eight months of 2025

Thailand’s foreign tourist arrivals this year up to the end of August fell 7.16% from the same period a year earlier, the Tourism Ministry said yesterday. There were 21.9 million foreign visitors during the period, with China the largest source market with 3.1 million arrivals.

In August, the state planning agency cut its forecast for foreign tourist arrivals this year to 33 million from 37 million. There was a record of nearly 40 million visitors in 2019, before the pandemic. – Reuters

Thai hotels cut room rates amid falling tourist numbers

Thailand’s hotel sector is experiencing pricing pressure this year after four consecutive years of rate increases that have nearly doubled average room rates since 2021, as tourists from China and other major Asian markets have dropped significantly, says Tris Rating.

In its latest Industry Spotlight report, Tris projects total foreign tourist arrivals of 33.1 million this year, a decrease of 5.6% from 35.5 million in 2024. Malaysia has now overtaken China as the top source of foreign tourists during the recent green season period (June 1–9), with arrivals from the southern neighbor up 13.2% year-on-year. Meanwhile, European markets such as Germany (up 71%), Italy (+28%), and Switzerland (+24%) have surged forward, alongside Middle Eastern countries like Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Oman — all posting gains above 30%. The fare is 200 baht each way and takes three-and-a-half hours. The Hua Hin departure is from the current Transport Co. terminal just north of Hua Hin Airport.

    Starting May 1, the Don Mueang-Hua Hin route will offer four round trips per day. The two outbound trips from Don Mueang Airport will depart at 8 am and 3 pm. The bus will stop at eight locations, including the Service Hall at Don Mueang, Mo Chit 2 Bus Terminal in Bangkok, Mahachai, Phetchaburi Big C, Phetchaburi Bus Station, Cha Am PTT Petrol Station, Bluport Hua Hin Resort Mall, and the Hua Hin Bus Station.

Thailand logged 65,000 new Covid cases, 3 deaths last week

Thailand recorded 65,880 Covid-19 cases and three deaths in the last week of May but the outbreak was waning from its yearly peak, according to the public health minister. Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said yesterday the new cases and fatalities were recorded from May 25 to 31.

Listed firms see profits rise but sales decline

For years, the residents of the Ban Thammarat community in Prachuap Khiri Khan have been tormented by the foul odor emitted by the wastewater from a local rubber factory. Despite their pleas for regular inspections and serious action toward wastewater management, the issue remains unresolved, forcing some to relocate.

Phuket earmarks 156 million baht for 24 EV buses and charging stations

The Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization (PPAO) confirmed the allocation of 156 million baht (US$4.7 million) from this year’s budget for the purchase of 24 electric vehicle (EV) buses. These air-conditioned buses, each with a capacity of 21 seats, are set to serve three public routes across the province.

The announcement was made during a Phuket provincial land traffic subcommittee meeting, presided over by Vice Gov. Amnuay Pinsuwan. The meeting saw the participation of Phuket City Deputy Mayor Prasit Sinsaowapak and leaders from various government organizations. Continued …

 

Thai AirAsia targets 40% domestic market, plans Japan expansion

Thai AirAsia, a leading low-cost airline, has set a goal to command 40% of the passenger market share domestically by the close of 2023. This comes as the airline intends to introduce two additional routes in Japan in the upcoming year.

Santisuk Klongchaiya, the chief executive of Thai AirAsia, mentioned that the airline’s market share in the first half of the current year was 37%, a noticeable increase from the 33% recorded prior to the pandemic. He attributed this growth to the performance of domestic routes, with an average load factor of 94% on 32 routes leading to 21 provinces and eight cross-regional routes. Continued …
